    Anacostia

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet...it's really so great! Located in the Anacostia…read moreArts Center..it really is a one stop shop for all things created by black people...and I LOVE IT! Disclaimer: if you're able to stop in and NOT buy or WANT to buy half of the store...you're better than me...because I fail. Things I love about the store: - they support and sell local black owned products! If you're looking to shop and support black owned products...this is the place to go! - the folks in the store are soo knowledgeable about the products they carry and are really super friendly! (I know I've hung around longer than I should just chatting with the folks in the store and it was great! - they carry an assortment of skincare products, body butters, candles, sage, crystals, some jewelry, some home good items! Just everything and everything is of great quality! - they have some really cute apparel as well! I've gotten several hoodies, t-shirts, bathing suits for me and my friends and I ALWAYS get complimented on the pieces. - on the weekends, your liable to walk in on a pop-up sip and shop event with other local designers showcasing their items and who doesn't love a mixed drink while shopping! - I love getting my holiday cards, birthday cards, wrapping paper etc here because it's all centered around black people. As a black woman...this just makes my heart smile. Things to keep in mind...yes the items are pricier than what you would see at a larger chain BUT you are absolutely getting high quality items and supporting black businesses! Kudos to the team here for creating, curating and maintaining such an awesome venue for people like me to support people who look like me!

There is nothing like a shop full of high quality stuff made for "us"…read more "Us" with melanin and, most especially, "Us" from DC. This shop has a small but diverse selection of hair, skin, and body care products and cosmetics made by, and for, people of color. (and yes, there is a difference. This melanin needs MOISTURE, honey! And lots of it!). I bought a whipped body butter (I think it was Thai Lemongrass and Coconut scented... something like that) and it had this brownskin feeling so silky smooth... chile! In addition to bath and body products, they also sell candles and other fragrances for the home. The shop has a great collection of tops, tees, onesies (for the littlest queens and kings) and accessories with all kinds of positive and uplifting messaging... as well as some with phrases that you really won't understand if you're not from here (Mumbo Sauce, Go-Go, and Half Smokes, anyone?). I scooped up a dope "Native" shirt, with an image of DC and an artistic rendition of it's flag replacing the "a". (Sometimes you gotta flex on the new neighbors just a lil bit.) If you're into more Afrocentric slay, this shop also offers bold and beautifully colored tops and dresses available in prints and patterns endemic to the Motherland. Ashe. There's also a small collection of teas, spices and sauces for sale including some (gentrified) mumbo sauce in a bottle for those to scared to hit up Yums, Kenny's, etc. to try the real thing. (LOL! It's all good though). The prices here are a little higher than what you would pay at other places (yeah... $30+ t-shirts are a thing here), but to me it's worth it to pay a little more and support small businesses that are supporting and representing us.
