I definitely prefer Ace over the other store across the street. I've purchased Christmas decorations, paint, pellets, grass seed & shop vac bags here over the years. The store isn't so huge where you're lost looking for an item. And it's easy to find an employee willing to help you find the item you might want. Their selection isn't that shabby. If you're looking for it they probably have it. And if they don't you can always go across the street. read more

Always stocked. Always come through. Not a lightweight, McQuades carries DIY materials that are superior to the big orange box and at fair prices. I'm not so sure why anyone would complain about this place. I've been shopping here for years and years and never had a problem with finding what I need and getting help when I need it. read more

My husband has a walker that lost (goodness knows how) a nut from a bolt. We could not access the bolt to determine its size. We went to Ace Hardware where one of their workers disassembled the walker, replaced the nut, and assembled it again. When we asked for the charge he said there was no charge. Would we have had the same service from Home Depot? I think not. Every time I have been to this store they have been very helpful - it will always be my first stop. read more

Brought power washer on 5/31 for repair .. said they will call in a couple weeks. 3 weeks go by no call. I called and they said they couldn't find the part and will call in 24 hours. Another week goes by and no call, called them and they said they couldn't find the part and we could pick it up. Soo it's July 17 I still have a broken power washer with no updates along the way. Poor Poor customer service. read more

I've been shopping at Mcquade's Ace Hardware for over 20 years. I have alway found the staff very helpful, which is important since the size of the store's footprint was doubled, it's sometime hard to find your particular item. Many times the staff will walk you over to where the item is located. Ace is my first stop, and if they don't have it, then Home Depot and if they don't have it, then Amazon. Mac McC read more

Interested in supporting a local bus. over a big box store. Tried calling in with a question to confirm something before driving down but was left on hold for over 10 mins. I gave up and hung up. Got my question answered right away at the competition. If you are too busy to answer questions right now pop back and say so dont just leave someone twisting or at least get better hold music. read more

While I want to support small, local businesses, McQuade's is making it difficult. Every time I go there, I am met by a bunch of employees who I can only describe as crabby. There are a lot of employees, but none of them seem terribly interested in helping customers. If I want that kind of non-service, I can go to the box store across the street. read more

Try to visit and support this store vs the large ones all the time.. BUT....called ahead to check if had roll up shades..younger male voice said sure we have shades. . I asked if sure had small sizes in stock?.. in uncaring attitude. said yeah. I went in and sure enought they were out of stock. I THOUGHT THAT would be case! I purchased another few items needed.. At counter --check outperson, sounded like same I heard on phone. Still uncare attitude.. rang up item grunted a few words.. Gave me the sales slip.. I said Thank you... UH he should have said that ..not me.. Really. He just turned and walked away. I had looked at a 40 Pfister trimmer. Intended to go back and get.. After that I went to Home Depot and picked it up. Many on staff are helpful, but there are a few rotten apples. Two employees today were rude when I asked a question. One of them brought me to the wrong section, didn't answer my question and walked away. Another one when I asked about an application for grout said "do you know where it is?", I said I did and he replied rudely, "Then why do you need my help". It's unfortunate that they keep these rude, unhelpful people who clearly don't like their jobs. read more

McQuade's Ace Hardware does NOT honor corporate promises as presented on their currently running TV ads, but instead engage in deceptive "bait and switch" schemes. The Ace Hardware ad for purchase of new grills claims, "Free delivery and assembly" if one were to spend $399.00 or more on any given grill in stock and is a loyalty card member. The grill we bought came to $639.00 which easily qualified for "free delivery and assembly". After completing the purchase, we were advised they would not honor the "free delivery and assembly" offer because we don't live in Westerly. Free delivery applied only to those living in Westerly (we live one mile beyond the Westerly town line in Ashaway). If we wanted it delivered, it would cost $70.00! So much for customer loyalty and service. If one has spent enough to receive a reward credit, just try to redeem it on some merchandise. There are so many restrictions and qualifications - a real joke! Customer DIS-service at best. See y'all at Home Depot or Lowes! read more

For those that support family owned businesses like McQuades (as we have for many years), you might think again given how McQuades treated me as a customer recently. We had placed an on-line order for pick-up for 12/24, which included presents for Christmas. The email confirming pick-up said the store was open until 6pm. I double-checked the store hours on the website, which also said the store was open until 6pm that day. My husband arrived at the store at about 3:05 and called the number for the store as instructed in the confirmation email. The phone rang for a long time and then disconnected. He got out of the car -- walked passed a lighted sign in the window saying the store was open until 6pm -- and walked up to the door...which was locked with a single sign in the door saying they would be closing at 3pm Christmas Eve. My husband did another errand, and as he drove back by McQuades again noticed a car still parked in front of the closed store. Thinking it might be a manager closing up who would be willing to help out a customer, my husband pulled up alongside the manager's car and politely explained that he wanted to pick-up an on-line pick-up order that was paid for and all ready to go, and that it wasn't that he was asking them to stay open late for his sake but rather because their website said they were open until 6. The manager said it was impossible because the store was now all locked up. My husband said it was disappointing he wouldn't take a couple minutes to grab the order for him given that it was ready to go, it was Christmas eve, and the website said the store was open until 6 (this conversation was happening at about 3:25) Instead of at least apologizing sincerely and expressing some empathy, what the manager did was blame me and my husband for not calling ahead to make sure the store was open. He furthermore suggested that we were the ones being inconsiderate to him and his family for having the gall to expect to shop until 6pm on Christmas Eve when the store itself said in THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS that the store was open until 6 that night (keep in mind while this conversation was going on, all of the surrounding stores were busy with Christmas shoppers). Furthermore, not only did the manager blame us for not calling ahead, he provided lame excuses for their poor customer service. He said that it took "48 hours" to change the hours on the website, and they had only decided "a few days ago" to close early on Christmas eve. And I suppose the lighted sign in the window takes 48 hours to change as well? And it didn't occur to them that the people placing on-line pick-up orders that day might be planning to pick them up before Christmas, and also be relying on the hours on the website and confirmation email, so maybe they should call or email pick-up customers with the correct hours...especially when the phone in the store is ringing away shortly after they closed and orders hand't been picked up yet? No-- none of that consideration for long-time supporters and customers of their store. Instead it was our fault, and we were the ones being inconsiderate. I guess that's why the manager shouted a sarcastic "Merry Christmas" to my husband as he drove away, as well. On December 26th, I called and spoke with Mark McQuade, who reiterated that it was our fault, not theirs, that we showed up after the store was closed on December 24th, despite hours being posted incorrectly in multiple locations. When I said I preferred not to do business with them anymore he said "well we would prefer that too." I hate doing business with Home Depot for a number of reasons. But despite their massive, impersonal scale, this Christmas they were much better to their customers than the local, family owned hardware store across the street. read more

Ashlee went above and beyond to provide me with great customer care and satisfaction and helped me get my lawn mower up and running again. This hardware store offers the type of friendly customer relationship that you miss when you shop at the larger outlets. They have earned my loyalty as a customer. read more

I purchased a Weber grill this spring. I wanted to support a local business as opposed to buying it The Home Depot across the street. First getting someone's attention to state what grill I wanted was difficult. Paid for the grill with a surly cashier who didn't seem to want to be there. I drove around the back to have the grill loaded into my vehicle. The two guys who did it acted as if I was imposing on them. Not one person said Thank You for my $800 purchase. The grill was supposed to come with a free tank of gas but their propane station was not yet working. I called the next week and was told I had to speak to the manager. After a 5 minute wait on hold I hung up. When I brought my tank in a few weeks later the manager grabbed my receipt out of my hand and looked it over as if I was trying to steal a tank of gas. He was very rude. I did get an online survey and listed all of the above and never even got the courtesy of a return email or a phone call. I like to support local businesses but will not spend my money where it is not appreciated. You can be sure I will never spend another dime in the store. read more

My neighbor bought me a chainsaw chain last may for helping him remove a tree but I never used it. I went to use it today and it was the wrong size so I took it with the receipt and the correct chain numbers to the store. I was pleased when the cashier called for someone to help me and 5 minutes later I had the correct chain , the cashier then took the incorrect chain and credit it's cost towards the new chain without a problem. Couldn't ask for better service and the staff was extremely helpful. read more

This is a full service old school family run hardware store. Fix your toilet, paint the house, buy a kayak, work on your merit badges, update the fireplace/grill systems, and plenty more. Resist the penny saving instinct to cross the street to the Home Depot. We are big ACE McQuade fans. read more

If you have the misfortune of using the on line ordering, buyer beware. They insist that you pull around to the back of the building then bring the items to you. You're at the mercy of what they pick off of the shelf. In my instance, the item I needed was difficult to locate and I thought I was lucky that I found that it was available at Mcquades. I made the 25 minute drive to the store, drove around back and waited for the items I ordered. An employee handed me the bag with what I ordered and off I went. I got home and opened the bag and realized that the product I ordered was taped up with scotch tape (Not packing tape). I opened the box and low and behold. It was a used and returned product. Completely ruined and worthless! Either they neglected to look in the box when it was originally returned or they figured they could resell It without the loss. I called the store and the solution was for me to get in my car, invest another hour of my day, use my fuel and make their mistake my problem and return it. At the time of the call, they were closing in 15 minute. Instead of offering to stay another few minutes they told me I would need to head to store when they were open the next day. Apparently they didn't care to be burdened with the additional 10 minutes added to there day but they felt that it was better for me to make it right when they deemed it most convenient for them. Based on this experience, I would never recommend this place to anyone. The customer service is by far the worst of the worst!! Do yourself a favor, shop across the street or find another store that values and respects the customers that shop there. read more

This store IS a good as it gets. It is old fashioned customer service at its best. All are friendly and as helpful as they can be. I have been shopping there for decades as well as their family owned McQuades grocery store on Main Street. They are literally in the backyard of the house I grew up in. I wouldn't shop any where else..........great value and the best of small town living. read more
