I feel compelled to express my gratitude and share my very positive experience not only as a customer for 8 years but during a really tricky emergency this past week. We discovered a gas leak (underground) and within a short space of time they sent a sales rep (Steve) who was in our area to help us turn things off safely (he was very clear/experienced and helpful), assess the next stages and perform a fix. This update/repair to replace old damaged lines was set up very quickly so that we weren't without service for more than a day despite our remote location. Very appreciated. The work was performed by John who was very friendly, patient and explained everything that was done and showed us how to get back up and running safely. Gave us many other tips/suggestions for the future. He checked and double-checked everything to make sure inside and out that there were no leaks. You can tell they take it very seriously. The level of care, communication and service we received was very impressive and appreciated. We live in a remote coastal area near the Sonoma/Mendocino border and at every stage from the service writer, phone/office down to the installer everyone was friendly and pushing things through beyond anything I would expect in this day and age where it seems people are under stress and/or under-staffed. Extremely Dangerous and Negligent - Avoid at All Costs!** last service was done winter 2023 If I could give zero stars, I would. Last year, I hired this company to conduct a routine test for propane leaks in my home and fill a propane tank up that I am renting from this same company. They assured me that everything was in good shape and that there were no leaks to worry about. Fast forward a YEAR, and my wife discovered a propane leak in our house - with a simple spray bottle of soapy water! To think that we had propane leaking into our home for an entire year due to their incompetence is terrifying. This isn't just negligence; this could have been catastrophic! The leak was not coming from an appliance but rather a propane line. We're talking about the potential for a gas explosion, a fire that could have endangered not only our home but our entire community. The thought of how long we were exposed to this danger is horrifying. Leaving a family vulnerable to such a hazardous situation is inexcusable. This company failed to do the most basic and essential part of their job: keeping us safe. This level of carelessness should be criminal. Shame on you for putting lives at risk! After AMERIGAS PROPANE told me I will hear from a rep within 1-2 days, and still 3 weeks out and 3 phone calls later I still have heard nothing, I decided to contact McPhails Fuel. Talked with Nicole and she could not have been nicer, telling me about the company and how different they are from Amerigas. McPhails scheduled a site inspection, and called me the day before to confirm they will be there between 9-11 am. McPhails tech Dave showed up on time and he told me about how the company is family owned and how things work. I am new to the whole propane thing and he had a wealth of experience. McPhails was more expensive per gallon than Amerigas, but what good is cheap propane if they can't even follow up with someone who wants to give them MONEY!! Dave found I had a leak and he offered to go under my house to see if he could locate it. I just had a plumber out last week to run a gas line and sure enough Dave found it. It was a compression fitting so he couldn't tighten anything, but God Bless him for helping me. He took pictures where the leak was and I sent to the plumber. Fixing tomorrow. I still have not heard from Amerigas. Thank God it's not winter cause our tank would have been empty! Mike read more

Amazing customer service. Amerigas left me hanging after 5 years of being a good customer, always paying my bills, with automatic deliveries. McPhail's got me set up with a new tank, propane and even took my Amerigas tank away to return to Amerigas. McPhail's has done more for me as a customer, even though I've only been with them for about a week, than Amerigas did for me after being a customer for 5 years. The courteous McPhails driver always shows up without fail. But recently, for two days, we had a problem. At first we just thought the tankless water heater was not working right. We lined up a repair. But then I could not boil water. Or light the fireplace insert. I cancelled the water heater repair just in time and called McPhails and they were booked solid and could not come until the following week, leaving two seniors sheltering in place without heat, stove cooking, or hot water. Then Ryder Nguyen who had answered the phone at McPhails came to the rescue. With patience - and even an email - he helped me check the earthquake shut off valve and solve the problem. We later determined that the gardener had accidentally tripped the valve. What this meant was that Mr. Nguyen patiently and creatively saved two seniors from having to go days without heat, hot water, and stove top cooking - and that McPhails could tend to someone else's needs. High praise to Mr. Nguyen and high praise to McPhails for having the good sense to have him as an employee. read more

I am so grateful I switched to Mc Phail's years ago. I was fed up with the competitor, whose prices seemed exorbitant, and beyond that, charged each of my neighbors differently. In order to switch to McPhails, I needed to install a tank, because previously my gas has been piped in. But even that did not deter me. Also, that other company even charged me $50 to shut off the line! McPhails was helpful in every way, always answered the phone, maintained reasonable charges, and was there when I needed them. read more

Anyone who needs propane delivery needs to know about McPhail's. They are, hands down, light years better than AmeriGas. Amerigas has the worst service I have ever encountered for a service like this -- and they 'forget' things and then try to bill you for them. In my case I cancelled my service and AmeriGas tried to bill me for 3 additional months of tank rental. From the very beginning of my experience, the service at McPhail's was top notch. They were responsive, friendly and did what they said they would do when they said they would do it. I would recommend them without hesitation. Avoid AmeriGas. They're close to a monopoly and boy do they act that way. If you want good service and a fair price for propane, go no further than McPhail's. read more

UPDATE: The delivery driver Jason was very nice, he came out bright and early to fill our tank and light our pilot lights. I also received a follow up customer service call from Matt. He called to hear me out and assure me that this was something that does not happen on a regular basis and is against their usual practice. I happen to believe him and am thankful for the phone call. McPhails does not care about their customers and are price gauging customers in this time of emergency. I ran out of propane, called in Thursday morning and pre-paid for a delivery. I called again on Friday , as we are out of fuel so we can't cook or have hot water for bathing of disinfecting. They told me that the fuel delivery man for my area was off that day, then proceeded to tell me I should have called before I ran out . If we were not under a shelter in place order and we are required to stay home I would not have a problem with waiting for their availability. They offer to come on the weekend (made it known it was a huge inconvenience ), this service would cost $105 to relight pilot light ( my boyfriend is perfectly capable as a contractor to take care of it) and a $340 additional fee . This is DOUBLE Normal service. We are in a state of emergency and this company not only don't care but they are not willing to help anyone in need in a crisis. On top of all of this the man on the phone lied to me and said our tank was rented ( even though I don't pay a rental fee, there are no logos on the old tank and my landlord told me it was owned) . We have 7 propane tank on the ranch and we are looking for a new fuel company. Take care of your customers and maybe you will keep them! UPDATE : Day 5 still no call and no fuel , even though I have already been charged ! Day 6: no fuel, however now that I am completely out of fuel they charged me an additional $105 on top of the $650 they charged for my fuel... AND STILL NO SERVICE. They have charged me almost $800 and they said I may have gas by the end of the week. read more

McPhails is average across the board and is currently charging $3.74 a gallon for propane plus a $5 service charge. An incredibly expensive way to heat your home and the pricing is not competitive. Many residents in the area have no other options but with the costs of propane being what they are, a solar electric install for your next furnace is probably far cheaper than continuing to use propane; even considering the cost of new appliances. read more

They filled the tank, and right after they left the pilot light went out. I called, they came back, lit the pilot light again, and showed me how to light it. For that, they charged me $120.00 after telling me there would be no charge if all they had to do is light the pilot light. read more

He came out and got my service up and running, and later waited for me on the eve of a holiday weekend (I was stuck in traffic) to get things back on after I had to shut down for a house tenting. Being left in the cold due to bad communication? Love it! Called to follow up about lack of a previous bill coming in the mail (something that's happened multiple times) and ask for a refill. Was told we had no outstanding bills and they would come out the next day! Well no one showed up and after calling back we were told we actually DID have an outstanding bill that would need to be paid before a refill... Irritating and definitely something that should have been said in the previous conversation but okay. We paid and were told they would be out the next day. They weren't. Now we've been playing cat and mouse trying to get someone here and have 0 propane left. Our fault for delaying getting a refill until we were low enough for this to happen, but seriously? How do I know how much and where to submit payment if you won't tell us, email us OR mail us until after payment is due? Overall a ridiculous experience and not the first bad one my family had had here. read more

I tried a few other companies to compare but sent my business to McPhails. They're courteous, prompt & most of all very technical. John delivered & setup my tank, confirmed that everything was set correctly & educated me about the tank & properties of propane. One of Mcphail's selling points when we started using their services was that they would deliver their propane within a day or two. I.e When we needed propane they would be out pretty much immediately. Now that's changed to five business days. Sometimes, when one is busy, it's easy to forget to check levels on the tank. Running out is bad news and costly. I think I'll go to another provider that can deliver as promised. read more

Poor Customer Service, never rated them before. McPhail has been our service provider for over 10 yrs and installed our gas tank. I have never contacted them other than for a fill or pay my bill. I recently contacted their office because I had a concern/issue. To my surprise, the two men in the office that I talked to treated me rudely and in a condescending manner. I was prevented from fully explaining my problem and constantly was interrupted during the conversation. It appears that the company gives you the run around if you call them for anything other than routine matters. They don't take the extra effort to hear you out. I was not treated as a valued customer. They didn't even pretend to be nice. read more

McPhail's were able to get me up and running again after my former supplier let me run out of LP. I choose them because they have credible reviews. I also visited their website to see they have online/automatic/CC payment of the gas. My former supplier had that for a while but discontinued it so that I was forced to write checks, find an envelope, a stamp and then make sure I mail the payment. (What an arduous life my mother lived before the internet arrived!) The service I received to get the tank installed was top rate. Sales rep Steve arrived for a site survey to verify logistic and safety requirements would be met. They sized me with a 325 gallon tank so that my fill-ups will be the dry months. (I live at the end of a long dirt road that includes a steep hill that gets sloppy in the winter.) Steve and his side-kick Dan delivered the tank as scheduled, installed it with new fittings and checked for leaks. The check discovered a leak in my house and Dan came up fixed it for me. (He also removed his boots before he traversed my pristine clean floor to the kitchen where the leak was.) New accounts get a new or refurbished tank. The tank looks great! I appreciate the rapport that Steve and Dan have as a team. Two guys who work well together and are focused on doing a good job in a timely manner. Dan drove a new tank delivery truck with a boom that can reach out about 20' at a 30% angle. It was quite impressive to see the technology of design and mechanics. read more

My experience with McPhails propane has been nothing less than fantastic. Starting with calling all around to every propane company to find one that would install a tank for our emergency generator. Not only did McPhails say yes (everyone else said no), but they had a sales rep out inspecting the site and giving us an estimate within a week. We were installed within about another two weeks. And then the truck came to fill our new tank two days later. While most companies will only rent you a tank, McPhails is willing to sell you the tank. It was brand new. Every single person we have dealt with, from the people that answer the phone, sent us the contract to sign, the sales rep who did the estimate, the installation technician who delivered the tank, installed the pipe to our generator and hooked it up, and the driver that refilled our propane are all courteous, on time, friendly, and Covid vaccinated. UPDATE: After calling the after-hours emergency line and explaining what happened, they sent someone out Saturday and actually gave me a discount- seems they "lost" my order/request and so I wasn't on the delivery list that week. It seems they are open on Saturdays despite the hours listed above. ORIGINAL: We had to get McPhail's when we moved because they own our tank, which we pay to rent. Our credit is OK. Not great, but good. They refused to put us on regular refills, so we have to check our tank and call in when we need propane, which we usually do around 15% and pay ON DELIVERY. After the holidays, for the first time, we lost track of our propane. When we checked it was down to 5%. We called Monday morning and were told they would probably be out Tuesday, but Friday at the latest. It has been below freezing at night and we can't use the heater or cook or the pilot will probably go out (then they charge you like $90). Guess what? They never delivered the propane. It's been 40 degrees in my house for a week. Now it's the weekend and they are closed. It's $250 if I want them to come out and do an "emergency" refill after they had all week. We have used other propane companies at other houses and never had these problems. BTW- I made the mistake of telling them we only had less than 5%- they are usually out in 2 days max, until we really needed it. I think they are purposefully putting it off to charge us fines. read more

We've used McPhail for 13 years, and overall, we are satisfied with their service. In the past few months, however, we have had to call and request a fill up when our tank got unusually low. At this moment, I am waiting on pins and needles for their arrival as we are about to hit zero. I was told they would try to come today, but we'll be without heat or cooking if they don't make it. Their delivery system seems completely disorganized. There are a number of us on our street that are serviced by McPhail, but a truck will service one of us and not the others, another truck showing up days later to service another. I don't understand why they don't have us serviced REGULARLY by geography. Not sure how long we'll stay with this company if our service doesn't improve. read more

We have been McPhail's customers for decades. They have always been responsive to any of our needs, and have knowledgeable mechanics to fix most any problem that may arise. As luck would have it, we discovered we were completely out of propane (water heater, heater, stove, oven) on Christmas Eve. Of course we were hosting! We called McPhails and spoke with the receptionist before 7am to see if there was any chance we could get some propane before our guests arrived. They promised they would do their best, but we knew it was a long shot. Low and behold, at 1:30pm, a little Christmas miracle came driving up the driveway - McPhails to the rescue! Horrible service. Staff are rude and unwelcoming. Went with Ferrell Gas after six months of dealing with snarky office staff, specifically Tiffany, and poor response time. I was told that it would take 7-10 days for McPhail to fill my tank or I could pay an additional $270.00 for an earlier fill, this was in the middle of winter when temperatures were down in the thirties. Called Ferrell gas, they had someone out to swap out the tank same day and offered me a better rate. read more

I called McPhail's and they sent someone out within an hour to add more propane to my tank to tide me over until the larger truck could come out. He was very professional and re-lit the stove, furnace and water heater for me. McPhail had a large propane truck out later the same day to top off my tank. Update: Propane demand has been low so it's been on my back burners. Called Royal propane today and the customer service is top notch and answered all my questions and more! Plus... They are going to suck out all the propane (GOLD) in my tank now and transfer it to my new tank and do a safety check for free! I did not know they can do that! If you don't like where your at now check out others and do the research, it will save you money!! It's cheeper, better service, routine deliveries, they watch for hikes and get you topped off before it goes up and they don't wait till the last min then send you a large bill that you have to pay within 30days! read more

I purchase propane gas for our house from McPhails. They are very professional and really get the job done. Their service just couldn't be better. From the person on the phone to their service techs I give them five stars. Here is an example: My propane suddenly quite working yesterday. It turned out that it was the earthquake shutoff valve. I've had my propane fuel delivered by McPhail's for 30 years and they have never let me down. Last night our tank went dry due to a faulty gauge and they were here to fill my tank literally 15 minutes after I called in the morning. The company has efficient billing, friendly, knowledgeable customer service, and repair folks. I have been a client for over 2 years. I have a rental on Airbnb. It is 0300 in the am and my weekend tentants HAVE NO PROPANE for heat or cooking/ water because my tank is empty. I have had to refund their rental payment and suffer a negative review on Airbnb due to your lack of auto refill despite my "auto" payments on time. I have no idea when your loyal employee will be out there today or if any day to service my rental. Believe me, I will be on the phone IN 2 DAYS to speak w/ a supervisor to discuss my financial loss due to your lack of service and then consider another company. By the way...before I put my rental on Airbnb my tank was empty once before. So, it appears their service technicians may have been to the 4/20 event rather than filling tanks. My first bill came from McPhail's and I'm pleased to say that they have followed through on all of their agreements. They are as follows: First Fill credit $161.25 Tank Rental credit (1st year) $70.20 Propane 177 gallons $548.70 (3.10/gal) Account Balance $387.45 A note to anyone who purchases propane on an 'as needed' basis. Because we are conservative users I've learned to track our typical usage (for the past 23 years) and make a note on my calendar to check our tank regularly. I've never had an 'emergency' and call for a fill up when we've been 20% and above. It's very easy to manage when you set up a tracking system. We are VERY happy customers! Thank you Scott McPhail and company! We have already recommended your service to several friends and I've let my FB friends know that McPhail's customer service is A-1. Note: If we had stayed with the previous company this fill up would have cost us $702.69 just for the propane not including all of the 'junk' fees they add to every fill up. Don't stay with service that you're unhappy with ~ if your company isn't giving you appropriate customer service and treating you fairly, don't be bullied, SWITCH! read more

I didn't pay the invoice for a few months...100% my fault obviously. They tried to contact me many times but had outdated contact info, my fault again. Had to reconnect on short notice, no issue for them. Got lucky here, my mess up was a blessing in disguise...sent someone after hours and was so incredibly nice and helpful. Found that the kitchen stove had a gas leak! Disconnected it and capped the line so we are safe. Could not ask for better service. Thank you to all involved. You are appreciated. read more

The office staff are rude. Greg one of the owners is so unhelpful. MATT the delivery guy is the only reason I put up with this company. Matt is a sweetheart. The alway have extra charges for every little thing. The say they will give a discount for the area but they don't. I will be tearing out the tank soon and going with another company. We switched to McPhail approx. 6 months ago and have only experienced good service. Their phone customer service is friendly and responsive. We had one issue with our tank, which we weren't even aware of, but the tech filling the tank noticed. The tech called it in saying our tank system needed to get switched out and before he had even turned off of our road, we got a call from McPhail's office informing us of the issue, that all was safe, but that they would replace the tank the next day to make sure we didn't experience any service issues. True to their word, they showed up the following day, replaced the tank and checked the pilots in the house. Their techs are proactive, careful, and friendly, the office has communicated well with us, and they have been true to their word. Appreciative of their professionalism and level of service. read more
