After reading the office's response to my husband's review, I feel the need to share my own experience as the person who actually went into the office to discuss the billing issues. The problem was never that we refused to contact insurance ourselves. The issue was the office's unwillingness to help clarify obvious discrepancies or assist in resolving confusing charges related to treatments THEY recommended. When I visited the office, I asked reasonable questions about inconsistent insurance payments, unclear billing, and financial charges added during the insurance processing period. For example, insurance paid very different amounts for exactly the same treatment. The office simply printed out the insurance payment details and even agreed that it "didn't make much sense." However, when I asked if they could help double-check with insurance, I was repeatedly told that it was "my responsibility" to deal with insurance. Simply telling patients to call their insurance company is not the same as providing good customer service or billing transparency. What made the experience especially frustrating was the dismissive attitude throughout the conversation. In particular, when I pointed out that financial charges were being added before insurance had even completed processing the claims, I explained that the insurance payment timeline is between the office and the insurance company, and patients should only be responsible for the unpaid portion after insurance processing -- not finance charges on the full amount during that process. The response I received was essentially: "Well, it's your insurance. They paid us late, so you are responsible." I have honestly never experienced this type of billing practice anywhere else. Overall, this office felt far more focused on collecting money than caring for patients. This was reflected in the unclear, non-itemized invoices we received. If I had not gone into the office personally and asked for printed details, I would never have understood how these so-called "financial charges" were being calculated. Please carefully review your invoices if you visit this office. I truly hope this feedback encourages them to improve their billing transparency and customer service. read more

I usually don't leave negative reviews, but this experience was very disappointing. I went to this dental office last September for a routine cleaning. I was strongly recommended a deep cleaning and was told my insurance would likely cover it, so I agreed. Months later, I received a bill of over $400 with no clear explanation or itemized breakdown. When we went to the office to ask for clarification, we were not given clear answers and were told to "deal with the insurance company ourselves." There was no willingness to review the charges or help us understand the billing. We also noticed additional financial charges were added over time, even while the insurance claim was still being processed. We were never informed of any outstanding balance during visits. I had a tooth extracted by Dr. Zach McMaster and it went as pleasantly as a tooth extraction could possibly go. Normally I am a pretty nervous/ neurotic patient. But Dr. Zach does a great job of explaining things to the patient before (and during) the procedure, which alleviates a lot of stress. I think that Dr. Zach and his team also have a good awareness of the patients' perspective, and address the small discomforts well. They really aced the small things like rinsing my mouth promptly and thoroughly when I needed it, checking with me for sufficient numbness, etc. I'd definitely recommend a visit to this office. read more

Called several places with no availability or were closed. I was on 3 hours of sleep with lots of pain due to what became known as a synus fluid asist that felt like tooth pain. They helped out quickly and had the technology to find it quickly. A referral was sent right away and was able to be taken care of quickly. Friendly staff and clean place. read more

Amazing and relaxed experience :) Thanks to me coming from an former socialized medicine country, made me build up a ton of fear towards dentists. Dr. Todd McMaster put all those fear to ease and he truly is an artist in Dentistry. He took all the time I needed just to make sure I am completely happy with his work. And boy, am I happy! Top Notch Dental Practice. McMaster Dental is a place that feels welcoming. Dr. McMaster is very gentle and makes you feel comfortable from the moment you sit on the chair until the end of your appointment. He is very thorough in explaining the procedures and eases any of your concerns with concrete examples and a proven track record. I transferred my kids to his practice when their pediatric dentist retired. My children who are very picky and do not tolerate any level of pain, have not had any trouble with him at all. I've been going to Dr. McMaster for over 10 years and have always been pleased with the my treatments and the overall experience. A little mishap on a bike happened and I chipped off half of my front tooth! Talk about traumatic!! Dr. McMaster got me in the next day and worked with me to get the perfect matching crown to replace my front tooth, diligently matching the temporary crown so I was happy while the lab made my permanent crown. Let me tell you, matching it to my expectation was not an easy task with me being a very particular patient. It was my front tooth for peets sake!! Dr. McMaster understood and couldn't have worked harder to make sure I was happy with the end result. It looks like my little accident never happened! Moral of the story... don't drink and bike!...but if you do and happen to mess up your pearly whites; go see Dr. McMaster. You won't regret it!! read more

Nobody likes to go to the dentist, but if you go McMaster, you at least don't have to be anxious about going. McMaster dental has to be the best dentist office in San Diego. I've been going here for about 4 years after having a lot of bad experiences with other dentists in Carlsbad. The office is clean, all the staff are friendly/great. My former dentist was like a car salesman, always inventing expensive problems and making lots of little appointments in order to keep billing insurance. Not at McMasters'. If there is a problem, they will tell you and sometimes fix it on the spot if reasonable (I had a chipped tooth and got it repaired during an appointment for a cleaning, that would definitely not have happened at my old dentist) if there isn't any problems, they will send you on your way with a new toothbrush. Just a super honest all around great dentist office...oh and they don't take HMO insurance, however my old dentist that did take insurance still charges twice as much for my copay portion as McMaster charges for the same procedure with no insurance, so it seems their prices are very competitive. I highly recommend this dentist. Ask, they are really good about scheduling and sending you appointment reminders, which if you are like me is a big help. read more

After going through several incompetent dentists, and a few unethical greedy ones, I was lucky enough to have a friend refer me to this office. That was at least ten years ago. I started out seeing Dr. Dow, then we he retired I saw Dr. McMaster. He is very nice, and extremely well qualified. Recently another dentist joined the clinic: Dr. White (I think that is his name) and he is awesome as well. These guys stay on top of the latest technology, but more importantly: they are good at what they do and ethical. You will not get any sales pitches or pressures here, but they will fully inform you as to what options are available if you have a situation that needs remedying. The office is very professionally run, from the front office staff to the technicians. They may consider hiring some more hygienists, as they all seem to be booked at least 3 months and some longer than 6 months in advance. Other than that (I prefer to make my appts not so far out), this place is basically the perfect dental office. I even started bringing my children here, and have been thoroughly satisfied with their performance in that regard as well. Its so unbelievably nice to have dentists that you can TRUST. Dr. Mcmaster is a great dentist. He is very friendly and professional. The staff is warm and friendly. They see kids to seniors. The office is very clean and they have a LCD tv hanging in the waiting room for viewing. I get my teeth cleaned there and they are always great. I highly recommend. Only complaint is that they are so good, you usually have a long wait before you can schedule an appt. Its best to call in advance to set up consults, etc. read more

After moving to San Diego/Escondido some years ago, I went through the unsettling process of finding a new dentist on my insurance plan. It wasn't until a neighbor recommended Dr. McMaster et al. that I found a dental office that I like, trust, and admire. I have always had good teeth, and generally need only a regular cleaning and preventative maintenance. Nevertheless, the McMaster staff is professional and friendly, remembering patient names, calling for appointment reminders, and handling the billing without fuss. Due to a recent change in insurance, they are now out-of-network for me, but I have kept them anyway because of the high quality of work. (The cost differential is negligible.) Dr. Krupnak makes the time to explain procedures, and the hygienists take pride in their work as well. I feel confident being under their care. read more

Dr. McMaster is wonderful and friendly and is good at what he does. I also love his assistants, super nice ladies. The front office staff is very nice and are pretty on top of it all. The office set up is nice and clean and has lots to keep you busy if you ever have to wait (which has never been more than ten minutes for me). The Dr. is also great with kids. My children (six and seven) really loved going to him, and loved the awesome goody bag at the end of the visit. read more

I live at the coast. But twice a year I drive through bad traffic all the way to Escondido to Dr. McMaster's office for my cleaning and dental checkup. He is that good. I had a dental emergency on a Friday a few years ago and he personally answered my phone call, and met me off hours in his office to take care of my (pretty serious) emergency. I don't know of too many other dentists that committed to their patients. My kids grew up under his care as well. (Unfortunately they have not been able to find a dentist near their homes that comes anywhere close to the quality care they got in McMaster's office during their growing-up years.) Good, honest dentists who care more about preventive care than unnecessary procedures are hard to come by. read more

I hate the dentist, probably like most people. However if I must go to the dentist I will only go to McMaster dental. I am one of those who don't like people poking, scraping, or grinding around in my mouth. But for some reason I don't mind allowing the people at McMaster dental to do it. The staff here don't pretend that "dental fear" does not exist. They are sensitive to your fears and discomfort and do whatever they can to alleviate pain. They are super friendly. I have been going to Dr. McMaster's dental practice for many years, and have never had a negative experience. His work is excellent. Options for treatment are clearly explained. He is kind, gentle, easy to talk to (unless your mouth is full of dental instruments!), and has a nice sense of humor. Crystal is my dental hygienist and is wonderful. She is very thorough and gentle. I always feel that I have her undivided attention and know she cares about her patients. The entire staff is friendly and professional. I've been coming to this dental office for well over 20 years. Now my grown, married children come (even driving over 100 miles for 2 years until they moved closer). Dr. Dow, Dr. McMaster, and for a short period of time Dr. White. They have all been amazing dentists. I can't say that I have ever been afraid to go to the dentist. Starting off with Dr. Dow since I was a young child, I have always enjoyed the atmosphere they have set for any age of the family. I am thoroughly sad that now that I'm married and moved away I will not be able to go to this dentist office. Everyone there is always nice, they know who I am and remember me from one visit to the next. Before Dr. Dow retired, he would make sure that I felt like I was the most important patient there. I have had this Dentist when I was a teenager and while going through college. The hygienist and dentist were really friendly and fun to talk to. The wait isn't too bad, just make sure to get there in time for your appointment, they also give you a phone call a day in advance to make sure you don't forget. Dr McMaster is super friendly and very throughout. Did stuff I've never had a dentist do before when I was a new patient. I was surprised and impressed. All the staff actually are friendly and helpful. I've had several other dentist push cosmetic stuff on me hard, and it was very off putting like a used car dealer. One of Dr. McMaster's dental hygienist is a very good friend of ours. During a conversation about how another dentist told me I needed root planing and several other costly treatments, my friend said the costs quoted seemed out of line, and that I should make an appointment to see her dentist, Dr. McMaster. Long story short, I did NOT need root planing or any other expensive treatments!! In fact, Dr. McMaster's examination revealed my gums to be in excellent shape (ratings of 3's and two 4's) -- a far cry from any need for root planing. Needless to say, my husband and I have been going to Dr. McMaster ever since. He and his staff are top notch!! read more

A great experience! I broke a old filling I got probably 10 years ago. The front office agreed to get me in right away. When I did arrive right on time (the exact minute) then they sent me back soon as I got there, everything went so fast we had extra time to get all the x-rays I was going to get my next visit. I like that they all were efficient I filled all forms out online everything was quick and easy.
