While I initially wrote a glowing review for this practice, and some things still hold true - like the competency of the actual dentists and the integrity of one hygienist in particular (for reasons I will explain shortly), [[HIGHLIGHT]]unfortunately there was more than one issue with an unbelievably rude receptionist/admin named Leticia that I simply can no longer look past.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While I was still a patient and getting my teeth cleaned, I could literally her her ridiculing a question that I had asked another front staff member. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I say ridiculing I mean just that - she laughed out loud and acted as though it was an utterly idiotic thing to ask.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When in truth, it was a pretty basic question about my insurance coverage for part of a complex and costly care plan. It rubbed me the wrong way and I did let it be known to higher-ups, but I chose not to update my YELP review at that time. I then had an unfortunate experience with a seasoned hygienist who wound up breaking a tool while working along my gum line. I give her credit for admitting it and insisting that we immediately get x-rays - to see where it lodged, since she feared I could choke on it later, or it could eventually come out of my nose while sleeping. Mind you, I'm a bit phobic about dentists to begin with, and for very good reasons. As a child, a dentist attempted to fill cavities in my mouth without numbing me at all. AND tragically, I had an Aunt with severe asthma who passed away after slipping into unconsciousness and not breathing - as a result of being too heavily sedated by a dentist. So to be told that a broken off and presumably sharp edged metal object was now floating around in my body looking for an exit was not only disconcerting - it was TERRIFYING! But I tried my best to keep my cool and not freak out. Had the hygienist not shown that level of integrity, it would have been a whole different story. Still, the situation would surely cause some to want to sue without a second thought. That's when things started to go south. Even though I had let the incident go, a sudden fear of being sued and subsequent resentment for the possibility surfaced. For instance, [[HIGHLIGHT]]after EVERY single appointment I was asked to evaluate the visit. That felt like some type of preemptive defense tactic to prove I was happy with the care provided.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Then, [[HIGHLIGHT]]other dental hygienists started to seemingly act defensive on their colleague's behalf - by openly criticizing my complicated gum condition.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Which had resulted from an auto-immune inflammation response to a prior laser surgery. The thing is, I had never registered a complaint about the tool broken off along my gum line incident, yet they were all acting defensive about it. I had actually long since let it go. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The single time I had complained was about the receptionist's unacceptably rude behavior.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I eventually left their care because of all this odd and offensively defensive behavior. A few years passed and a loved one' s long-term dentist wound up abruptly retiring, so I actually recommended Grand Dentistry to them, since they were nearby. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When he called Grand Dentistry, he was immediately put off by the rudeness of the very same receptionist - Leticia.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Who he said actually scoffed at his insurance provider and said they only take the elite version of it. The funny thing is that he works for a very well-known media company and they have a separate phone number just for employees under his company's plan. He just calls it a custom PPO plan, but I'm assuming that is what Leticia meant when she referred to "the elite version" that they take. Ironically, Leticia then proceeded to tell him that he was not on the elite plan and so his coverage with Grand Dentistry would largely be out of pocket. [[HIGHLIGHT]]So not only is this woman rude beyond comprehension, she apparently doesn't do her job well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The worst part is that she seems overly confident that she is immune to criticism.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And maybe she is. I'm not sure if she's related to, married to, or the girlfriend of a higher-up - but whatever the case is, [[HIGHLIGHT]]her elitist attitude and condescending spirit are doing real harm to the reputation of this office.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My loved one is not one to ever complain, he simply found another dentist and moved on. But the fact that Leticia is still there and still acting so rudely is what motivated my update today. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When someone is potentially the first person to engage with a new patient, be it on the phone or in person, you should expect them to represent the ALOHA spirit that this place wants to be known for.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not the antithesis. read more

One hygienist in the office and is not vaccinated. She is anti-vaccine and is preachy about it. I did not want her breathing near my face even with a mask on so I got up and left. I spoke with Dr Basso about this and he assured me that he and the other staff are vaccinated. I'm sure he is in a difficult position but I do think the public should know and make their own decision about whether they want this hygienist to be working so close to them. Do not come here. On the website this place seems so welcoming and helpful. In reality, in my experience, they are the opposite. I went to their office to complete the paperwork and possibly be seen, and the front desk lady was rude to me. The moment I walked in she said "we're not open yet.". This was 7:01am on friday, & their website says they open at 7am, plus the door was open. I said, "the website says you open at 7am on Fridays, it's 7am.". The front desk lady then said: "we don't see people without an appointment.". I said, "I'm here to fill out the paperwork and make an appointment.". She said, "We don't have any openings today.". I went in because I had pain, so I told her I had pain because for some dental places this makes a difference and they will try to work you in. She said, "I'm sorry.". She didn't seem sorry, she seemed irritated I was there. (I wore a mask the whole time, so her irritation wasn't about that.). Their website makes it sound like they'll be happy to help you. My first experience with the office and the dentist was great! The receptionists are very welcoming and professional. The office was very clean, with free coffee and tea, and a children's section with 2 iPads for the kiddos to play with. The dentist, Dr. Basso, is the best dentist I've ever had. He was very kind and extremely transparent, during my initial exam, and the initial stages of getting a crown put on one of my teeth. He laid out the options and gave insight on each, making me feel informed and confident in making dental decisions. Dr. Charles Basso of Grand Dentistry, Escondido, CA is a very skilled, compassionate and an extremely good communicator type of Dentist. My first appointment with Dr Basso as a new patient was actually a cleaning appointment. The first thing he did which none of my previous dentists had done (after all the x-rays had been taken) was to examine my mouth for oral cancer. I think that my previous Dentists have done this as well. However, none of them explained what they were doing and why. Dr. Basso had explained how a Dentist can identify early signs of oral cancer aside from just pointing out which tooth is a problem. He also had me open and close my mouth and had identified that my TMJ is on the left jaw. My other general dentists did not do that as well. The Staff Dental Hygienist who was assigned to perform the actual teeth cleaning was Sonia. She did a superb job! My second appointment with Dr. Basso is when he when I met with him so he can make an impression for my crown after I had an implant. I asked him to explain what is an abutment and an abutment custom post. He explained them thoroughly. Of course, as an Auditor I double checked his explanation by going online and reading on it. He explained them correctly! He also took scans of my upper and lower teeth for my crown to make to make sure that my crown will fit perfectly. I did not have to bite on a gooey, uncomfortably putty for several minutes to have a physical dental impression. My third appointment with Dr. Basso was when he installed the crown that was created from a digital impression. Overall the installation went very well. I am impressed with the appearance and fit of my crown!!! Dr Basso's staff are also very friendly and accommodating. I like all of them! Dr Bonar and all the staff are a great team. I trust Dr Bonar as she is inclusive and sharing of her extensive knowledge. I feel in good hands for my long term dental care. Recently she replaced a ceramic crown (from a past dentist) and gave me a gold crown. This is the last molar. I suggest you stay away if you value your dollar. The up-selling is strong. They charge exorbitant fees. The highest you will find, even with good insurance you will be coming out of pocket in a big way just for a routine exam & cleaning. The Dentist was kind, professional and seemed to be very knowledgeable, same with the Hygienist. The office staff was rude, condescending and incompetent. They leave a lot to be desired. But they do have TV's in the ceiling though, if that matters to you. They also have "free" soft drinks in the waiting room. They seem to have removed the "free" limo service from their website lol. So ya, this place is super gimmicky and seems to cater to Rancho Santa Fe soccer moms. This office is trying to be more Spa than Dentist. I think Grand Dentistry has a very sleazy used car lot sort of feel, under the shiny facade. Remember all the "free" swag is very very expensive in the end. Enjoy it, you paid for it. Who likes going to the dentist anyways? But Dr. Bonar's place makes it not so sucky. I love how friendly and professional she is. The place is really cute inside, too. They have a mini fridge in the waiting room stocked full of bottled water, juices, and Starbucks fraps. They always have a pile of cards/ envelopes so you can write your friends greeting cards while you wait. There is also fun things to take home with you. I think I have a Swiss Army knife, sewing kit, and banana-flavored SPF Chapstick from this place. The dentist is great and uses the most up-to-date modern tools. While you are reclined in the chair, there is even TVs in the ceiling so you can veg out with headphones on. I will make the drive 30 minutes up to Escondido to go to this dentist. Love it here! From the coffee in the waiting room, the free chap stick (good stuff!) to the friendly and professional staff! I've only had a cleaning here, but found it to be the most thorough cleaning ever! They have all of the latest technology and you've gotta love the TV's on the ceiling! Remember "nice"? Remember when what you say mattered? That's exactly how my first visit at Grand Dentistry was. From the first phone call through my consultation yesterday this company put me first in all ways. Dorcy checked me in and offered me several options for a refreshment. Just the way this office is decorated is absolutely beautiful and Dorcy shared a little bit about how that came about. Funny it didn't "smell" like a dentist's office either. My doctor is Dr. Bonar. Love the dentists at Grand Dentistry however this is a business so keep that in mind when you make an appointment I forgot that because I got so comfortable with the dentist's being so good. So my pain in my mouth was secondary to the financial part. Insurance benefit exhausted and the out of pocket was too much, so left my appointment still in pain.
