The aisles are in a more sensible order. It feels bigger than before even though it isn't. It also appears to carry more items than the old WD. The employees are pretty much the same which is nice. They go out of their way to help. My only complaint is the bright yellow paint inside. I know...some may think what's the big deal with paint color? Reserve judgment until you see it yourself. Rotisserie chickens often not ready yet for the 5 o'clock rush hour. I bought Greenwise meat recently and though the outside was pink and fresh which sadly it covered older meat that was grey in the container. In the liquor store prices are often mislabled. I can go on. The solution is the Hillhopper Store. There I find capable friendly staff that don't lose my orders and try to dupe me on fresh meat, and have the sense to have rotisseried chickens ready between 5 and six when they are probably in most demand.

I love these speciality shops and after learning a little of its history I'm a little jealous there's not one closer to my home. There are meat markets and butcher shops then there's locally owned and operated markets that captures your attention around every turn. It's Saturday morning and the customers just keep coming some I'm sure because this is where they buy their meats but it's not only about the beautiful and delicious selection of meats raised right here in central Florida but also an abundance of items provided by a very unique selection of vendors. As we entered the shop we were immediately greeted by a number of employees but also a vendor who was dishing out delicious pulled pork sandwiches, this wasn't a small sampling, the sandwiches were full size along with delicious bbq sauce that matched the delicious smoked pork (now who does that these day). The meat cases are filled with fresh and frozen vacuum sealed packages of beautiful meats, seafood and many small batch specialty items. The small displays throughout the shop are stocked with items that you don't see anywhere else. I thought the prices were very reasonable especially considering the quality and they also have great deals on a variety of their meats. Whether you're looking for something for a special occasion or if you just want a healthier choice this is one of the best options I've seen in sometime - I am just visiting the area but they definitely earned a return visit before I leave town in the coming week...

It's a tad bit on the pricier side, but there's a great variety and most of the staples are imported from the East. They even carry Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa incense and body products here among other wonderful home & personal care items. I love that they offer spices in smaller packages for around $1 each just in case you don't need pounds of cardamom. However, they do offer bulkier amounts of all essential spices for Indian cuisine. A few of the items you will find here are cardamom (fresh and green!), cumin, clove, cassia bark and cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, mustard seeds, fenugreek, turmeric, garam masala, and a plethora of curries! Omg! And the RICE! They have a great selection of big bags of basmatis! My favorite part of the store is they have ready-to-eat spicy samosas and kachori. They were huge and only $1.25 each. You could reheat them in the microwave they provided in-store or save them to take home and either crisp them back up in the oven or refry. They are not made locally. The samosas did not come with any type of sauce and I was told that I would have to buy some if I wanted it, but either way - I would come back here for those again. They were really yummy! The greatest discoveries for me were the boxes of Girnar Instant Cardamom Chai Milk Tea and the Girnar Instant Masala Chai Milk Tea. Each box contains 10 sachets to make yourself a delightful beverage at home by just adding hot water. This milk tea was also offered hot, pre-made in-store, but you're going to pay $1.99 for a tiny little cup. Just buy the box of 10 ($5.99 each). There are more flavors...

So the mere concept of Gainesville once again having a Russian grocery store was very exciting to me. However, while I admire their spirit, the store is very small and the inventory--at least for now--is rather limited. I worry that they won't make it because they have a much smaller inventory than the "Europe" grocery that occupied two local locations prior to apparently going under. While Russian Food--as this store is plainly named--has some non-Russian Slavic foods, it's mostly Russian. Moreover, it's lacking on some expected Eastern European goods like high-quality Hungarian paprika. Its strength is on Russian candies and other sweets and they have a good selection of Russian loose-leaf teas, too, though they were lacking a brand I really wanted. Still, they only opened I think a month or two ago and while their space is small, maybe they'll get more goods in soon. The tea and chocolate I bought was good, too: fresh, authentic, and tasty. I'll certainly go back.
