I hired this company when going out to bid, I had not seen the reviews on Yelp, but noticed them after having work done and trying to locate their number through a google search. To say I had a very different experience with McGuinness tree service would be an understatement. My first interaction was with Jim who was very professional. After hiring them, I met three crew members who were all professional and pleasant to talk to. The foreman talked over routes with me and showed the equipment they would be using and advised me that the equipment and dragging of trees would leave marks, but they would do their best to minimize it. They made sure to avoid septic and leech fields. After reading the reviews I had not yet had the tree stumps ground yet and was nervous they may not get done. I called McGuinness tree just for an ETA or schedule. Jim called me back and had someone out the next day and they were out on a Saturday. If I had read the reviews I may not have hired the company. The crew took out the trees perfectly and did a great job cleaning up. However, the old man McGuinness was there both days pulling them off the job. They never did finish the stump grading, the final cost was well over the original estimate and they were 6 months late in completing the job. read more

Tree Service: McGuinness Tree Service recently removed 14 trees from my yard. I want to give Michael, Ryan and their crew a HUGE shoutout! They were amazing, they communicated extremely well, and did exactly what they said they would do. They had to use the crane to lift the trees over the roof of my house, nothing even came close to my house, even though some of the area's they worked in were really tight. They dropped the trees close to the ground, then the ground crew pushed them into the street BEFORE anything touched the ground. Throughout the process they had the blowers running, making sure my yard stayed clear of any debris. When they were finished, they again blew the yard to remove any debris, and cleaned the street as well. There wasn't so much as a leaf left behind when they finished! The entire crew was friendly and communicated very well throughout the entire process. I can't say enough good things about the crew that did the work! In the quality of their work, safety, cleaning up, listening to and following instructions, accommodating special requests, creatively fitting the work needed into the time allocated, and being just really smart, friendly, decent guys. NEVER USE THEM (EVER) They cut down trees for my neighbor BUT put a big one down on my property and proceeded to cut it up in my driveway, scratching scraping, gauging my driveway (which was partially newly paved) also destroyed brand new paved street in front of my driveway. They NEVER asked or given PERMISSION to come onto my property. When I complained, they came out to look, they were extremely rude, sarcastic, they didn't apologize, smirked thru the whole conversation (and even laughed). Funny how my neighbors driveway is spotless including the street in front of their driveway, but mine is in terrible shape. Again, they had NO PERMISSION to be on my property. Hell. No. DO NOT EVER CONSIDER EVEN GETTING A QUOTE FROM THIS "BUSINESS". And I use that term loosely. Here's why... enjoy! They gave us a chicken scratch, hand written estimate on a yellow carbon copy paper that was extremely vague. It had two different options and prices. We went back and forth via phone to understand what the pricing actually included and finally got it ironed out verbally. We booked them 3 weeks in advance. Scheduled for April 21st from 8am -2pm, Police detail, 200' + crane, flagged trees for removal.... the whole bit. I even mailed my neighbors, warning them that they may be inconvenienced that day because we had to shut down the street. We took that day off from work to be close by in case the crew had questions. Because most of the contract was verbal and they never produced proof of insurance, I took the liberty of typing everything we agreed upon through our many phone conversations. (I'm no dummy, if it's not in writing it didn't happen, right?) Three days before they were supposed to remove the trees, I sent everything we spoke about verbally to them in an email and asked again for proof of insurance. We told them they can call us if they had any questions. I gave them our work and personal email, cell & work number. They had every way of contacting us short of homing pigeons and ravens (shout out to Game of Thrones fans) I didn't hear from them, I assumed everything was on schedule and that the scope of work was understood. I thought they would bring proof of insurance with them the day of. (How naïve I was.) Less than 20 hours before the service was scheduled, I received an email at 2pm saying that they were canceling! Uhm, WHAT?! NO NO NO! You do NOT do that in an EMAIL! For the love... What kind of "business", wait no, what kind of "professional" goes about conducting themselves like that! I was livid and obviously still am... not because they cancelled. Oh, no. I could understand that they needed to revisit the scope of the project because I put it all in writing and maybe it looked like a lot to them at that point. Maybe get it all into a more formal contract. But I didn't add or subtract anything from the scope we agreed upon verbally. I just put it 0n writing and asked them for their insurance. Maybe they got scared that we were taking the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our home... or maybe they underbid the job and would have been screwed if they went through with it. (Wow, you are a superb idiot if that's the case) But to cancel a service that had been schedule for a month, less than 20 hours before you're supposed to be there! C'mon, that is one of the most unprofessional ways I've ever been treated. They took the cowards way out to send that in an email and then not return our phone calls to his cell phone and office. Or respond to my follow up email! It's been 2 weeks and I still haven't heard a peep from them. I hope you read this, Jim. I hope you know that this is not where it stops. Everyone I know, all my clients and beyond will know how terrible you are to deal with. Thank god we dodged that bullet. Jim, I sincerely hope you have a rebuttal. I'd love to hear it. read more

They came out for a quote for tree removal and stump grinding. After removing several trees from my front yard, I asked when they would return for the stump grinding. We were then told the stump grinder was out for repair and that they would call once fixed. We NEVER received a call from them, and after reaching out to them 3 times over 6 weeks, we finally needed to the get more quotes from other companies just to finish the job MCGuinness said they would do. read more

If you hire Mcguinness tree company make sure you be there to watch an explain to them exactly what you want done even if you had an in person estimate an went over it many times via phone. They will not do what is literally written on the estimate contract. They will do the neighbors tree for them on your dime an charge you 350/hour an then not care because they say they are hard workers. I called McGuinness Wed NOON 10/30/2019 - 882-0686 Supposedly their answering service. (Angela) I left my name number and address with her. I recvd c/b at 5pm from Mary Lou McGuinness 315-4877. She stated James McGuinness 305-2718 would come by Friday 11/1 11am. Quoted $600 to remove 30 ft remaining of my neighbors tree that destroyed my 5k wooden shed, & small pile of pieces cut that I carried to my 2nd d/w. (Ridiculously high, but just wanted gone so I could start emptying shed) I recvd a call at 5pm, same day from Mary Lou McGuiness stating they would be able to come right then. Delso (who took off to other ... neighbors, speaking Spanish for 15 minutes.) & Ryan came with a chipper and a truck that Ryan needed to leave & exchange for a claw/crane truck. THOUGH HE HAD BOARDS TO PROTECT THE LAWN, He Did NOT use ANY. NOW I HAVE A "DESTROYED LAWN". NUMEROUS OVER SIZED MULTIPLE TIRE TRACKS SO DEEP ... UP TO 4" DEEP TIRE TRACKS, WHICH OF COURSE FROZE. A one star review is something I've never given before. Worst part is it's not fair to all the good people who work at the company, but it's the owner who made the decisions, so that's, unfortunately, what they get. Jim came to the house for a survey and quote. Price was fair. He had good advice about the trees I wanted removed. Seemed like a good guy. Mike was always friendly and helpful over the phone. Took a long time to get scheduled, but once I did, I was excited to have some extra sun in the yard (and a lot of dead, hanging branches carted away). The crew was in my yard when I came home from work to meet them. Looked like all was ready to start, but the crane operator was on the phone. When he hung up, the first thing he said was, "Why are you leaving that big pine? With that y shape, it'll split. $500 to take it out today. Never be less than that." That surprised me. I wasn't expecting to be an extra $500 out of pocket today, and the pine wasn't growing toward the house. It wasn't on the estimate, either. The crane operator said, "I don't think we'll be able to do this without digging that pine outta there." Maybe the guy had a point. Maybe it was a good idea, all told. But it wasn't on the estimate and I hadn't budgeted for it. So I asked him to just go ahead as quoted. The crane operator got back on the phone, and I heard the name Jim mentioned. The guy said (to Jim), "Yeah, he thinks you didn't do your job." That struck me as odd. I did not say that. So I asked the guy if he was kidding. "No, I'm not. Jim's a certified arborist, that's what I pay him for. If he's not doing his job, I'm gonna tell 'im." I said, yeah, but *I* didn't say that. You threw it on me, and it wasn't a nice thing to say, besides." "Well if you're gonna get ornery about it, we can leave right now." "What? Who's ornery?" The crane operator said, "If there's something you don't like here, we'll leave right now." Second time he said that, and then I understood: he was refusing the job. After being quoted and having to wait three months for scheduling. He was refusing to deliver. There's probably something I could do about it legally, but why would I want someone like that doing any work for me? I can't even begin to describe the lack of professionalism, the discourtesy, rudeness, and inconvenience. So I let him go by saying, "If you don't want to do this, then you can go." And they did. Not a bit of hesitation. Three trucks rolled out in under a minute. So there I am, with two trees that still need to come out, having waited three months for service, only to get barked at by the owner and then the job abandoned. Who runs a business that way? Emailed them to get a quote done on my property. They emailed me back asking what my address was so that they could set up the estimate. They called and told me that someone would be out withing 1-2 days to do the estimate. Three weeks have gone by with no estimate or even a phone call telling me they had to reschedule. read more

Jim and his crew did a fantastic job and the quote was very fair. I'm not sure how the other people got so upset as I was not privy to the service I was was more than happy with the services. I live in Nottingham NH and they removed a tree from behind the house. My yard was protected from the crane and all went awesome. If I could give no stars I would. Absolute worst company ever. Gave us an estimate and we didn't call them. Sent us another estimate with a lower price. They cam on April 1st. They destroyed the driveway with the crane. Had a hard time having them return our phone calls. When i spoke with Jim on Wednesday he felt as though we were setting him up. They were contacted by neighbor to finish taking down tree that fell during storm. They used huge crane next to my yard and lowered tree parts over my house to street . One of the tree limbs bumped my roof and caused some damage to side of my roof.also a lot of pine branches were on my roof from them lifting the branches over my house I informed the supervisor on job he said they would take care of it and they never cleaned up or contacted us about repair of the roof they damaged . Also they left a large mess of smaller limbs in the back of my neighbors yard next to my fence which is an eye sore they never came back to remove them which my neighbor said they would. I made an appointment for them to come out and look at some trees and they never showed up.

Contracted with McGuinness for the removal of approximately 20 trees in July to make way for a swimming pool. While conducting the work they damaged several trees on conservation land as well as ripping out electrical lines and tubing to our irrigation pump. They refused to take responsibility for damaging the irrigation system and told me that I should read our contract and that they weren't responsible for any underground lines or utilities. I pointed out that I had read their contract and that it states that they are not responsible for any "Undisclosed Utilities" and that I had my irrigation system provider clearly, using bright white landscaping paint, mark the lines the day before. I had walked McGuinness' supervisor and crew through the area before the job began pointing out the location of the irrigation pump and the white lines the irrigation system provider had marked to locate the underground lines. McGuinness then changed tactics claiming that they weren't responsible because the lines and tubing weren't buried deep enough. They had unearthly the lines by dragging one end of a felled oak tree across the lines with a tractor while the other end being dragged created a large trench that snagged the lines near the pump. They claimed they weren't responsible and said that if I didn't pay in full they would have a state inspector there that day and I'd be sorry. i told them the lines were properly and legally buried and I was fine with them having an inspector come by. No inspector ever came. I told McGuinness that I believed they were responsible for the damage done and that I wanted to get an estimate for the repairs before paying in full and offered to pay 75% of the fee the day of the services and to resolve the remainder with them once we had an estimate of the damage. They demanded immediate payment in full and said if I didn't pay then and there it would cost me more and I'd be "very sorry". They left and the stump grinding portion of the work was never completed. Subsequently, I received a damage estimate and sent them a letter via certify mail with a check for the work done less the damages and stump grinding fee. They refused to sign for the letter and I called them to let them know that it was awaiting their pick-up. I got a call back a week later saying that they wouldn't sign for a certified letter and that I should send it via overnight mail. The overnight mail was signed for but the check went un-cashed until mid-October. I found this entire experience to be unprofessional and very stressful. It's very important how a contractor reacts when things go wrong and in my opinion McGuinness' conduct in this matter was inappropriate and unprofessional. My wife and I recently had McGuinness Tree Service Remove some trees on our property. They quoted us $3050 to remove 4 trees and grind three stumps. We declined the work at the time due to finances. They called us back a few months later and said that the would perform the work for $2700 because business was slow. My wife talked them down to $2625. They came and removed the four trees and then started packing up and checked to make sure all the work was done as requested. I brought to their attention that they had not ground the stumps as stated in the estimate. They said the tree stump removal was not included. We specifically asked them if the tree stumps being ground was included, and they said yes, but that it would not include removal of the wood chips caused by the tree stump grinding. I called the owner, Jim, who apologized that we misunderstood the work that was going to be done and said he didn't know what more we wanted him to do. We specifically asked about the stump grinding being included, not only did they say yes, but they also stated that there would be wood chips left behind. There was no misunderstanding. McGuinness Tree Service arrived yesterday, as promised, to clear a tree felled during sewer work, remove an enormous fir and trim a treasured oak. The crew of two brought the right equipment and tackled the job with precision and efficiency. Throughout the job, they demonstrated great care with the landscape and were effective in avoiding numerous challenges with wires, satellite dishes, cars and the like. I was most pleased with the work done to the oak. McGuinness helped me understand how a change to my trimming plans would make the tree look better and remain healthy. Unbelievable service and highly recommend McGuiness Tree! I called them last week on a Wednesday for and estimate on having one huge pine removed and four maples. The person doing the estimate shows up Thursday on time and survey's job he then gives me an estimate right there on the spot, I never had to wait for them to get back to me on a price. This was the third company I called and one company said they couldn't even do it because they didn't have a big enough crane and another company who I called was DOUBLE THE PRICE AND THEN SOME! I asked how quickly they could do it because the pine needles were killing my pool. So the next day on Friday I get a call saying they will be here later Monday morning because I was the second job. They showed up at 11:00 am with a VERY PROFESSIONAL CREW and greeted me. They did everything exactly as described and cleaned up like they were never even here. They had all of the correct equipment and all of their guys were very positive, friendly and especially safety driven for each other, every person and structure around them. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with this company. I did ask the question "How can you be so much cheaper than your competitors"? His response was "I own all my own equipment" as in the HUGE CRANE that showed up. This is a review of McGuinness Tree Removal of Nashua, NH. I will start off by saying their rating would have been higher if they had shown a little bit of professionalism when the job was completed. First, why don't we talk about the good? The crew that performed the tree removal at my property did a great job, with regard to the tree removal. That is where the good stops. The contract signed indicates that there could be "some" damage done to your yard as a result of the work performed. I agree, considering the equipment that they have to use. The damage to my yard, however, was quite excessive. This stemmed from an apparent lack of knowledge as to how to drive their crane into the yard. When they backed the crane out at the end of the job the entire yard was destroyed. Our yard was nice and flat prior to their visit. When they were finished we had mounds that stood up to six inches higher than the original level and we had pits that went down six plus inches. All we asked of Mr. McGuinness (yes the elder McGuinness and the owner of the company) was to level the muck back out. I understand we were going to lose grass and have some divots in the yard, but this was excessive. The mess spanned three-quarters of my quarter acre backyard. The response Mr. McGuinness gave was highly unprofessional. His exact quote was "your expectations were too high, I gave you a bargain price for this job". Well, if I had known I could pay more money to have them respect my property and return it to a near-normal state I would have paid the extra money. He told me it would only cost a few hundred dollars to have a landscaper come in and fix the yard...or it would take me ten minutes with a rake. After a while he said he would send somebody back to the property with the tools necessary to level the land. Thank god I didn't wait since nobody ever showed up. I had to go out and buy some tools and leveled the land myself. If you read this review Mr. McGuinness, it took over five hours to fix the yard...not ten minutes. During the work they also damaged some asphalt in front of the house. Again, they indicate on the contract that this is a risk. They, however, do not need to rake saw dust on top of it to try and hide the damage. Luckily, we saw the damage from the window and we watched them try to conceal it. This was quite unprofessional in my mind. Own up to the damage. At least the homeowner will know what we need to fix up front, rather than finding out later. I could have damaged my vehicle driving over the damage if I didn't know it was there. Again, an EXTREMELY unprofessional move on their part. Bottom line, they are good at removing trees. If you do not care about respect or professionalism and/or you don't set your expectations too high, this is the company for you. If, however, you care about your property, being told the truth, getting a little help when they do excessive damage to the yard, etc., you should find another company. I wish I had. They were supposed to come back out in the spring to grind out a couple of stumps for us...needless to say that will not happen. They have already done enough damage to my property. read more

McGuinness Tree Service left a placard on my mailbox. It was left in the hot sun, and the bottom portion of it stuck to the post and became adhered to the paint. I called five times to tell them about it, but never heard back. At a minimum I thought they would like to know the damage their placards can cause, but I also expected an apology and an offer to clean it up. How can we trust a company to safely remove trees and clean up after themselves if they can't even take care of a mailbox they damaged? read more

I had McGuinness take down 6 trees after that freak snow storm in October 2011. They were very hard to get in touch with and didn't return calls or emails. I was told I would be scheduled 2 to 3 weeks out..5 weeks later I got a call telling me when they would be over to do the work. The paperwork states that by signing the estimate, you are aware there would be damage to your yard and maybe your driveway due to the heavy equipment needed. Ok.. understandable. The price you pay also included removal of debris (except sawdust)... ok.. works for me. Well, they tried to drive a huge piece of equipment onto my cement patio and now I have a huge crack in it.. my back yard was also their dumping place for the debris... what the actually picked up, that is... the rest was just scattered around my entire backyard. I sent an email to complain and apparently they take their complaints as seriously as they take their jobs... what a joke.. never heard a word from them...wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. read more

I wish I would have read reviews from multiple sites prior to hiring McGuinness Tree Service. It sounds as though it is normal for this company to destroy your property, but tell you that they did a great job removing the trees. I had work done in November of last year. When they drove in, they tried to place their truck on an incline. Needless to say, they got stuck and damaged the lawn - I mean 8-12 inch ruts, 15 feet long. They called in one of their other trucks (a smaller truck) to attempt to pull the first truck out , which continued to damage more of the lawn in a different area. They finally called in a tow truck to get them out. Jim McGuinnes told me they would take care of it in the spring. It is now mid April, and the fix was to have a kid come in with 5 bags of soil from Home Depot and some seed. Now I have 6-8 inch ruts with mounds of sod in my yard. After several calls to McGuinnes, Mike finally came out to look at the damage. His response was that it was not as bad as he thought it would be, but he would take care of the problem. That was 1.5 weeks ago and I have not heard back. While he was at my house, he indicated that they fired the guy who performed the work at my house because they had problems with him. and they tore up my lawn. I told him that I had used Koster Brothers in the past and minor damage was repaired, even though I know that you cannot avoid minor damage due to the equipment. The damage done by McGuinnes was not minor, but extensive - further exacerbated by improperly trying to rectify the problem. Needless to say, I will be paying a landscaper on my own to fix this problem. It would have been cheaper to go with the more expensive tree service who is professional and addresses issues if they arise. In addition to the lawn damage, they tore out a lilac bush when dragging a cut down tree into an area that they could chip it.
