My air was not working like it should and the unit was under warranty with McGee Heating & Air, so I had them come and service it. Mind you that I went to school for air conditioning technology and did residential heating and air for 10 years before going into ammonia refrigeration for another 15 years, so I am no dummy. I am no longer in heating and air and the unit is under warranty so I called them to fix it. They came out the first time and charged me $195 for cleaning the coil, $89 service fee and $150 for a pound of freon, equaling $434. Then tell me that it needs a TXV valve which is under warranty and it would cost another $828 to put it in. Which made the total $1,262! When I called them to complain about the high price, they looked at it and stated that they will knock off $150 since they billed me for 2 pounds of freon the second time and only used 1 pound. Well, this angered me even more because if I hadn't called, they were just going to let the overcharge stand and they act like them knocking off the overcharge is doing me a favor. read more

im a single female and McGee heating and air lied to me and tried to scam me. after putting in a new motor they told me my air conditioner was leaking Freon and would not make it through the summer. they said if I buy my air conditioner from them they would not charge me for the motor. I told them to order the 15000.00 air conditioner but called another company for a second opinion. there was nothing wrong with my air conditioner and it was not leaking Freon and it did make it through the summer just fine! they are now trying to add more charges to my bill after they toke several months to send me the bill for the motor!! read more

The marine air in our houseboat died, so we called McGee out of Hartwell. We'd never used them before, but had heard positive comments about them. They dispatched Chris out the next morning & he diagnosed the problem very quickly. It required a pump that had to be ordered, which they did. They called the day it came in & sent Chris back out early the next morning. He did a fantastic job of installing the new pump, plus some other work we'd asked for. And of course, these things always happen when the weather is at its worst. The heat has been miserable. My heart went out to him working in the hole of a very hot boat, but he never complained - just got it done. The boat is again a comfortable 72 degrees. So glad we made the call to McGee! read more

Their dispatcher called me back to make sure I was being helped, and the technician was very kind and helpful when he arrived. They really care about customer service, which must be rare now. My AC died in the middle of the summer, I was not able to get a hold of the company I normally use so I called McGee and they were very quick to respond. My HVAC unit was 20 years old so I also requested a quote as well for a new unit since I didn't want to spend too much money on an old unit. The technician let me know that the AC was completely out of refrigerant, I asked him how much it would cost and he didn't know. He ended up putting refrigerant in, then told me it would cost over $600. I was in shock since I was never given an estimate prior to them putting refrigerant in. He said there were no leaks so i figured for $600 it would last for at least the rest of the summer and the work was already done. The next day the AC didn't work. They came out again and notified me that there was no refrigerant in the unit. If a leak was that bad, they should have been able to detect it. They did give me a portion of the money back but they need to train their technicians better. As for a quote on a new system, they were $3,000 more than the other quotes. Yes cheap mismatched units by a bankrupt builder who should rot in hell. New house in 2005 with yearly HVAC repairs. Yes new house and HVAC FAILURES. Tried to go local in Anderson SC (Huge mistake} using McGee for repairs. Seemed to be reputable on the internet, but in reality like most contractors in Anderson SC they are incompetent uncertified idiots. I stress idiot uncertified idiots technicians. Or actually shade tree mechanics. Wall mart wont hire them. So in the multitude of repairs, they up charged me 200 dollars for a capacitor that I can buy on amazon for $12, and $800 to change a dryer component which in reality was not replaced. Photos prove part not replaced verified by date code which is 10 years old. Fast forward to 2017. Hurricane, power outage brown out power on off etc for 2 weeks. Had another HVAC contractor inspect for latent damage who I used before, BEST from Seneca SC. Found McGee severely over charged for repairs not done, components not replaced, lack of professionalism, un certified technicians, parts left unconnected, screws not secured, panels not secured or attached. I was informed that due to the incompetence of this business, that they un benounced to me injected stop leak into the system in both of my HVAC units. Was informed that stop leak is a death sentence to all HVAC systems and is a tactic by incompetent McGee Just to sell you a $10,000 replacement system. Outside contractor indicated this is a death sentence and a ploy by the company to sell you a $20000 replacement RUN RUN RUN. These idiots need to go away now! read more

Called at 10:40 in the morning to have a technician to come and fix my HVAC unit. Was told that I would have to be at home so the technician could get in. I stayed here all day without a single call from anyone. I called the office again late in the afternoon to find out that either they did not alert the technician or the technician decided not to come. Did not get a clear answer. The unit was two years old and stop working with multiple Freon leaks. When they installed the unit I say they didn't pull a vacuum properly or at all. At the time they installed the unit there was multiple mistakes. They built the plenum too small for the unit. Then they cut into a wall to put a larger filter intake and cut a power line that fed the back of the house. They tried to fix it with a stake on butt connector behind the wall. this is a code violation. I wouldn't allow them to continue, until an electrician came to fix the mistake. No licensed electrician came but someone came to fix the problem. Next they adding a vent in the garage. I heard the installer cutting on the wall for a good 5 minutes and looked to see what was going on. the installer was sawing the header for the door. Not where the vent was supposed to be but over the jam on both sides. The office called 2 times to find out what was taking so long and the installer said they had to fix these multiple mistakes. I asked how much longer there going to be and was told , at leased a half hour because they still had to pull a vacuum on the system. Five minutes later they had the truck packed up and said they were done. The lack of pulling a vacuum or not doing it properly , I say was the cause of multiple leaks in the system. Under warranty the bill was $700. The fix was patch job at best. I asked before they started the repair, I asked if they would do an acid test on the Freon and refused to do so. This would have proved My point about the botched install. I would never recommend these people to anyone. No one needs to pay big dollars to have a group circus clowns rip you off. read more

McGee installed my Heating and ac system when I built my house. At first maintenance and warranty work was good. Terrible over last few years. This past maintenance visit was the final straw, however, and I will never use them again. They said they serviced all four units (I also have a small rental house) but when I checked, it was clear they had not been. I called, they admitted, said they would come back to finish service. Then I turned on heat, it didnt work. Took a week to get them back. three tries later, I gave up and hired another company who determined there were three problems: vent was damaged on outside, so exhaust fumes venting into house (thank God were were not killed from carbon monoxide), which also prevented gas burner from working (but repeated attempts to run had burned up wiring (another thank God house did not burn down), which in turn caused compressor to go into thermal overload. Entire new expensive system installed by another company, and I have heat. McGee was kind enough to refund the maintenance visit fee I had paid...no do not use this company. I have a lake house in Hartwell Ga. and wanted to have a WiFi controlled thermostat installed so I can controll the heat pump remotely. My heat pump and current thermostat did not have the proper configuration for a standard installion by following the instructions that come with these types of thermostats. I did some research, chose a honeywell Thermostat and went to Honeywell's website to find an authorized dealer in Hartwell for installation. Mcgee was the only dealer in Hartwell. I called and talked to a service manager (Ben) explained the configuration and he told me what Honeywell thermostats they install and said that they would do it for $387 installed. The thermostat is $150 at the local Home Depot but I do not have technical ability to install it so I agreed and we made an appt. The technician (Zach) showed up on time. He told me that he had never done a complete installation of one of these thermostats including downloading and installing the app required to control it remotely but he wa confident that he could make it work. Long story short, his first attempt at installation resulted in the heat coming on when the AC should have been on. He got it right the second time. We downloaded the app ad got it working. He went to the truck and called the office and came back with a bill for $417 and told me that he needed to charge me an additional $30 for 15 feet of thermostat wire. I told him that I was quoted $387 installed for the thermostat. He talked to Ben the person who quoted me that and said that Ben told him to charge me the extra $30. I told him that was ridiculous, it should have been included and that wire is cheap and $2 a foot is a rip off. I paid it and told him that I will not be using McGee again. After the tech laft I went to Home Depot for something else and checked the price of themostat wire. $90 for 250 feet at retail and i'm sure they buy it wholesale!! On McGee's website there is a contact us section where you can send them an email which I did shortly after the experience giving them the opportunity to correct the problem. That was 3 days ago and I have not heard from them. A person/business is only as good as its word and as far as I'm concerned McGee Heating and Air's word is worth nothing. I encourage you to pass on this service provider and find an honest provider that will stand behind their word and their work. read more

During an extreme cold spell this week at our home in Lake Hartwell we noticed our heating system was having a difficult time reaching temperature and that the system seemed to run constantly. We do not live here full time as this is our second home and we were there for the weekend. We finished our basement in 2010 and had a new Trane system installed by McGee and it has worked flawlessly up to this point. I called about possible service the next day as I knew their service folks would be very busy during this cold snap and snowfall. The lady (Anne) was extremely polite, asked what the issue was, took down my name and number and said she would have the technician call before coming out. Three hours later the phone rang and the technician (Lance) said he would arrive in about 15 minutes. Ten minutes later he was at the door. Lance was fast and efficient and explained to me his every move in testing the system, identifying the problem, and recommending procedures for us to better manage our heating and air needs to help keep energy costs down. Upon completion of the indoor system Lance went outside to check the compressor, etc. Upon his return he entered with invoice in hand to inform me there was good news and bad. The bad news was that there was an expansion valve faulty in the unit and a new part would be ordered. The good news was the part will be adequate for our needs until a new part was installed as it was functioning but not as efficiently as it should be. The really good news was that the invoice amount was zero as we have a ten year warranty on our system so no charge for service call or parts. I hope Lance is the one to return and install the new part, as he was very personable and professional. To say we are pleased with Mc Gee in Hartwell would be an understatement.
