In September 2018 McFarlane Paving resurfaced my large asphalt driveway, which was 30+/- years old. Peter McFarlane Sr. was extremely responsive (came by the same day I called to give an estimate), knowledgeable (60+/- years in business), honest and accommodating. I don't do many of these, but this is a matter of principle. Professional. It is the single word to use to describe this crew. I wanted to keep my business and money in the community, so a local business was preferred. That being said, I found out that McFarlane PAVING was not only local, but also very well established with a great reputation for standing by everything they touch. There is absolutely zero affiliation between myself and McFarlane Paving, and I had never met Peter or the team before the job. Before reaching Peter, I had mistakenly called McFarlane ASPHALT - which is apparently a different company who I never did hear back from after my initial quote. I am explaining this because my review here is for McFarlane PAVING. Its easy to mix them up. Peter was no BS. He looked over every detail of my driveway, took measurements, and pointed out his concerns with drainage and pitch. After review of my competitive quote, he explained that it could be done at that price, but the material would be short. If material is short the driveway wouldn't last. I simply said - How do we do this job right? He explained his approach and gave me a quote a few hundred higher. The new driveway was installed today and looks more solid and well built than any other on the block. Simply put, you pay for what you get. I had no interest in haggling a bunch of nobodys who will skimp on material and skilled labor in the hope it works out. I have done that in the past and it always ends up costing more. McFarlane Paving is a family business, and the owners are there along with their employees making sure that everything is done perfectly. They are obviously dedicated to making sure that their customers are 100% satisfied. Unlike many others, they actually answer the phone and if for some reason they're temporarily unavailable, they call back quickly. I received a very fair price, and the driveway is beautiful...plus they fixed the issue of water sitting next to the foundation by grading it properly which had not been done by the people who paved the driveway the last time. I was calling to get a quote but was hung up on because I was looking for a competitive price. The person I spoke with was rude when I ask him if my quote from 2013 was a price that can do the job but was being explain about how high his cost were. In business you need to compete with price and service along with good attitude. I don't care about your 400 hundred other contractor fighting for the my job. A no show! Peter visited my property in August 2017, spoke with me, provided a written estimate, and told me I could be scheduled in early September (or about 1 month in the future). The next day, I accepted his written estimate and mailed it to him. In late September, I hadn't heard from McFarlane about scheduling so I called and spoke to Peter. He said he couldn't speak because he was "at the bank" and would call me back in an hour. It is late October and I still haven't heard back. I didn't expect this kind of customer service - being ignored - from the owner of this company. Disappointing. read more

Very pleased with quality of work at a fair price point, and what a relief to have this done and so well executed. Peter McFarlane is an experienced, laid-back joy to work with. His recommendation for our old broken asphalt driveway, which had been laid at least partly over concrete, was not to rip out & start from gravel, as we expected, but to lay new asphalt thickly over what was there, and his reasoning was sound. Install ended up just two days past original estimated range, and on the same day as our central air was being replaced, but the two projects went on simultaneously apparently without a hitch. We had a lot of overgrowth of grass/weeds on the edges of the old broken driveway, that I just couldn't get around to trimming, and they were very careful to consult with me about what to cut back and how much. I left for a dentist appointment and came home to a gorgeous new driveway that looks like about 6" thick and really well sculpted for drainage on our hill property. My only, minor, complaint would be a mess of edge trimmings/dirt/asphalt crumbs left in the walkway between driveway & back steps, but they actually might not have been able to physically get to them afterwards, having painted themselves out of that corner, so to speak. I don't expect to ever need another driveway - this one is likely to outlive me - but I would call Peter & sons again tomorrow, and if you want old-school professionalism and integrity, master quality, and solidly fair pricing, you really need look no further, but just call that number, and peace of mind will be yours. read more

Not sure of your specific issues but didn't sound like quality or price. I got estimate Pete knew I was pricing and I got a good education of making sure I price shop with a bit of knowledge. Spent the next month shopping around. Best price from legitimate company that is! Called Pete told him it's a go came to get signed estimate last week and now today a week later my driveway is top of the line better than I could have imagined his crew professional his son everyone great! Love that they are Bergen county company for many years. Great experience and great job.....oh It was 100° today and they poured all day and the Pete's son was on every machine all day. I wanted a new driveway and I found it very very hard to find a reputable company after several estimates and several other companies that did not even show up for the estimate. I was very frustrated with the whole thing. Then a friend of mine told me about McFarlane Paving, he said McFarlane Paving has been around for like 60 years, paving in this area. So, I called them and they answered the phone and told me they could meet with me later that very same day and it was Sunday. Peter McFarlane showed up and he was very nice and explained everything in detail on the process of replacing my driveway and gave me the confidence to go ahead with the job. They just completed our strangely shaped gravel to asphalt driveway. Had more hand work than a normal rectangle. Unable to use their big "paver" on our strange property. Two years ago we had our driveway resurfaced. We got 4 quotes from different paving contractors. Two of the contractors gave us very flattering prices to gain our business. When I asked these two companies about the specs of their project; virgin asphalt.vs. recycled, height of new asphalt etc, they didn't answer me. Mr McFaralne wrote out a detailed quote with all the specs contained. He earned our business based on what he would deliver and his reputation. I met with Peter Sr. a few times and am very impressed at how responsive he is compared to other driveway companies in the area. He has been in business and doing driveways for 50 years! Before we hired him, I also reached out to a neighbor that used the same company and they are very happy with the results. Peter Sr., and his two sons (Brennan and Peter jr) and a couple of other of their team members just removed our old driveway and installed a beautiful driveway. They were so meticulous with installing the belgium blocks on the borders at a 45 degree angle that it looks like a work of art. We can tell that this company does not try to short the customers on materials. Everything from using the large size Belgium blocks, the footings, 6" stone base of the driveway, asphalt etc. We can tell that these guys did not want to leave until the job was 100% perfect.
