Classic punk dive bar. Decent prices, friendly folks, good shows, nice outdoor space.

Move the pool tables away from the stage and this place is 10 out of 10 stars. This is the dive you need in your neighborhood. Well worth the drive from the Seattle area for the recent Zeke show. Cheap drinks with an awesome staff and friendly patrons will have us back again. Taco truck parked right outside was just what we needed after a night of loud live music. I did not even make it through the door with my clearly marked service dog before being yelled at and kicked out by the bartender. I would strongly suggest that no one support them with their business going forward. Their is a great bar next door to try instead if you are in the area. read more

The McCoy Tavern is Oly's good ol' metal dive bar for day drinking. I spotted it and knew I wanted to pop in for a cold one. I had to drag my brother from another bar and in we went. Friendly...not so much. But when I go to dives I don't really look for friendly. It probably didn't help my brother was doing something with his skateboard. I was distracted by the amount of stuff inside to look at. There was a vending machine to the right that has a gigantic head with a huge booger dripping out of it. When walking in there's also some sort of death demon hanging from above. There was some sort of butt rock cranking at full volume at the bar. The place is HUGE! There was probably only like 4 people inside and 6 outside. The patio is also huge. I'm sure this place gets PACKED on the weekend. The seating in the bank is made of old cinder blocks and there some other plastic style seating around. We are all basically hanging in an enclosed parking lot. It was wonderful. And then on the inside there seems to be a stage that is now covered in couches and recliners. A good view of the baseball game on two tv screens, if that's what you are in to. There was a hole in the stage so watch your step if you are venturing for that level. The drinks were super cheap and the wells were strong. The crowd was not too chatty either. I would say we probably had the words "out of towner" on our foreheads. It's a small enough town that people know. Oh..they know. Still this little dive was just what I wanted on a sunny summer afternoon. It made me want to stay the night and see what Olympia nightlife was getting into....bad or good. read more

Incredibly rude staff. Cannot believe this place is still in business. The guy with the black curly hair especially was so mean, He clearly hates his life and shouldn't be working with the public. Wish I could give this place 0 stars. I've been to dive bars in much worse cities with way friendlier people. read more

Paid a cover on Friday night was $3, I liked the ban playing sounded very Modest Mouse like. Outside area was pretty big but crowded, not many people in the bar everyone wa sin th patio area. Nothing really special will stop by again sometime. read more

I just want to say at first around 6pm the bartender was amazing, good customer service real with his words and everything. Then we got a bartender change and I'll tell you right now we tip like 5-20$ an order and your telling me when you switch bartenders, he's gonna be a rude racist fk? Literally we was second in line SECOND IN LINE!!!! And you don't want to serve us? Is it cause we of different race? What? With that disrespect it makes no sense. Overall we saw the last bartender we had and we gave him a 20$ with no drinks serve and said "thank you, I'm glad you're not being like him." This place is awesome myself, my sister, niece and my sister's boyfriend all went to this place and listen to Three bands and the bands were awesome the people were great. The service was phenomenal and the outside Lanai is cozy and beautiful and warm and yeah. I have nothing bad to say about this place. And it was only a $3 cover charge a dollar a band go figure. read more

Was having a fine time with a few beverages and local music. Didn't appreciate "the bouncer" at 1.45am physically pushing my boyfriend and I out the door as we tried to get a Lyft back to our hotel. I understand bar time and needing to close, but I don't deserve to be pushed outside. We weren't causing a scene or verbal issues. Cheap beer and cheaper thrills. There hasnt been a Saturday night where i havent been able to enjoy Hockey Night on CBC while doublefisting PBRs and peoplewatching at this place. I love it. I dont care that the bathroom looks like it oozes Three Stooges Syndrome. I dont care that you can barely hold a conversation at night cause its so loud. I dont even care about the perpetual use of the pool table. This joint is cheap and awesome. I can come in dressed to the 9s and after about 5 minutes, I stop sticking out because NOBODY CARES. The mother of all dives. It's so divey at this place, you'll feel wrinkles develop on your face as you leave and you will take on the appearance of the upholstery at this place (worn out, torn up and used.) You walk into this place and you say to yourself, "How did they get so much crap on the walls." There is not a spot on the ceiling or the walls that is not taken up by some beer/alcohol memorabilia item. They have a good selection of taps, liquor, and everything in between. I wouldn't trust getting wine at this place, and besides you'd stand out and invite unwanted conversation (take note ladies, these are not the guys you want to talk to...or even look at). Coming to this place alone sucks so come in a crowd, you'll have more fun. The best thing used to be when they had $4 pitches of Oly and you'd buy one and they ask, "How many glasses you want?", and I'd say, "None." Then you could walk around with your very own pitcher watching the drunken guy who fell asleep on his bar stool drool all over the floor. Ah, but the fun doesn't stop there! There's a pool table and outside smoking patio and there is plenty of people watching to be had. One time years back, I saw a guy try to pull a knife on another guy but was too drunk to wield the weapon properly and then proceeded to cut himself. He was then kicked out. Hahaha, like something from a movie. Another fun aspect to this place is having some drunk try to strike up a conversation with you. He'll slur his words really badly and won't make any sense. And then the bartender will but in with, "Just ignore him." Haha! And this place has a very loyal clientele. There have been times when I walked by this place at 2 in the afternoon and then came in at midnight and it was still the same crowd here. I didn't know drinking here was a 12-hour job, impressive indeed! The best thing was they used to have the first Mercyful Fate album on the jukebox and I always used to play that one King Diamond number with operatic high vocals on the chorus, "All hail satan, YES HAIL SATAN." Haha, never has that song fit a better environment. They took that CD out of the jukebox but they still got tons of hard rock and metal in there (at one time there were three Iron Maiden albums in the jukebox). ...and I almost forget, the bathrooms! Woah, you could send a haz-mat team into these rooms and it wouldn't help at all. Wow, I've seen some bad bathrooms at bars but WOW...these are in a league of their own. Usually some vomit near the sink so watch out. If you can't handle it just go next door to the Eastside Tavern. read more

I see that I am not the only one that gives bars the Charles Bukowski seal of approval. There are a couple of bars on that end of the block that I always get mixed up. I am THINKING from the pictures that this place is the place I am thinking of, the men's room pee trough threw me off. (On a side note, is that an air freshener sitting in there? Seriously? What's that gonna do?) All the reviews here pretty much explain it pretty well. Don't expect uppity, cleanliness, or decor that was actually "put together" by someone. Expect a dive bar. The trick to those crappy download a top 40 jukeboxes is this: Counteract lame song selections with Hank Sr or Jr, Slayer, or even better, Metallica's Master of Puppets-9 mins of metal madness. This trick has even been known to clear the bar of top 40 offenders. You're welcome. Don't expect decent service if you have a disability. Never have I been more disappointed in an establishment. To the bartender: The love of my life has had a traumatic brain injury, learned to walk and talk, and tie his shoes again. He has since received his bachelors and graduate degree in law. You see him as an intoxicated individual, I see him as a person trying to be normal. His speech is impaired, and you 86'd him without explanation. One of those lame download a top 40 song jukebox. I was unimpressed with the place even for a dive bar. Then a new friend convinced me to go back. When I stopped paying attention to how lame the place is I started to notice the people that hang out there. Wow what a show they put on strait out of Howard Sterns Wack Pack It's like the looser bus crashed out in front and they all stumbled in for a drink. The only redeeming factor of this bar was the cheap drinks. That's as far as I can go to tolerate this place. The place has a reputation for being a dive bar, but once I was inside I recalled one of those old Anti-drug PSA on TV trying to show the dangers of taking drugs and this looks like the inspiration of many of those said PSA warnings. Not to mention the staff was rather rude and some of the other customers were rather unfriendly. To top it all off, the patio section looked as if it had been constructed using the throw-away material from a hardware store. I do not recommend coming here. read more

I've been there a few times now and I have to say - I'm a fan. Good old-fashioned dive bar that captures the spirit of Olympia. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. The staff is extremely rude. One of the bartenders kicked my (not drunk) friend out after he informed her (politely) that she gave him the wrong debit card. During close, the bouncer became physically aggressive with another of my friends and she slapped a beer out of his hands and onto his shirt as he tried to finish it at the bar before leaving. She then proceeded to shove him repeatedly and even claimed that he was the one being physically aggressive with her. Extremely unprofessional and absolutely unacceptable behavior. read more

FIVE STARS for Thursday nights at McCoy's. Zero stars for any other night. Reasons why I love McCoys on Thursday 1. It is "Ladies' Night," which means either really weak or really strong dollar well drinks, depending on who is pouring them. I always order a double vodka soda lime and get, essentially, a giant shot with two limes. 2. Do you like Creedence Clearwater Revival? How about Creedence Clearwater Revival at 130 decibels on a fuzzy black couch? OH YEA! 3. The creepy James Dean cut out at the back bar. If you get drunk enough you'll think there is someone there staring at you. Someone with a sexy, mysterious, two dimensional thing going on. I once offered two drinks to anyone who would hide it, but got no takers. The offer stands! 4. The Evergreen student fashion show. What the fuck! Clearly you guys were prefunking while you got ready to go out. Did you dress up like neon psychedelic little leaguers on purpose? Is there a black light baseball game later? 5. My girly friend's phone number is written on the ladies' room wall! What kind of classy, brilliant, modern day Gloria Steinam hatches a scheme to write another woman's number on the wall in the ladies' room so that the only call she will ever receive from it is two drunk girls carrying on about how terrible they feel for her that someone wrote her number on the wall? As you can tell, this is a really upscale place. But wait, it gets better. 6. Speaking of things that happen in the ladies' room at McCoy's, two weeks ago, on a Thursday (of course, because although there is NO acceptable time to patron McCoy's, Thursdays are nearly forgivable) I was SLAPPED in the ladies' room by a middle aged woman for something I said about the education system in America. In all my years of running my mouth, beginning sentences with "Well, actually," and making inflammatory comments for my own entertainment, I have never been physically assaulted before. My favorite dive bar ever. Loyal patrons, friendly bartenders and other staff (did you know that the door man has a strong chin? Ask him to balance a bar stool on it). $1 pints and free pool on Sunday, and then probably the busiest night of the week ladies night on Thursdays which offer $1 wells to all the ladies, or men dressed like ladies. Yes, drag queens come to this dive bar that is also filled with underground punk elitist, metal heads and the occasional hippie. They don't really serve food there (they keep some frozen dinners just to meet law requirements) But because of that they don't care what kind of food you bring in. I've had pizza delivered, brought in Chinese food, left my drink to run to Jakes Hotdogs and came back with food, brought in a cake... they could care less, but I feel like if you are ordering pizza to a bar you should offer a slice to the bartender. I started coming to this bar just for the cheap drinks on Thursday, but now its my first and usually last stop whenever I hit downtown for the bars. We stopped in the McCoy's for a drink while walking the streets of Olympia. I drink wine, and when my wine showed up in a high ball glass that was my first clue. Really? Who doesn't stock wine glasses? The music was really loud, and the clientele was mixed. There is a small smokers patio in the back. The vinyl of the two booths we sat in was torn. Of the drinks we did order, they were strong- so that was relieving. This bar was ok, but it wasn't my scene and I wouldn't stop in again. read more

Horrible service. Was told my group could bring in food. We double checked as we were leaving to pick it up. Weren't gone more than 10 minutes... half our group was still there holding our table outside. And on our way back in, we were stopped and told we would have to pay a cover to get back in and see a crappy buttrock band. Me and the wife have metal in our blood, even though its more geritol then blood. Its a grungy, yet comfortable joint. Strange people...but I like 'em that way. Dig the couches out back, but ya may not be able to get out of some of them. Our first bar when we hit Olympia...and we always drop in for the Metal on the weekends. This place is great the owner is a cool dude and the staff are friendly. It's like they actually give a fuck about the customers. It is obvious that people don't go there because of the decor. The place is just down to earth and the atmosphere is friendly. The place has a following and the customers are loyal. Fun place go and hang out no matter what kind of day your having. It's a dive bar. It's a dive bar by ever definition of the word: cheap, strong, dirty. If you want something classy, go to the Spar, two blocks west. If you want something interesting, go to Obsidian next door. If you want a good beer, go to Skep on the west side. If you want something delicious, go to Darby's in the morning. After reading the reviews for McCoy's I felt I had to add my own. This is my favorite bar of all time. Cheap beer , strong mixed drinks ,and good people! I have never seen a fight there. When people start to act up there is always a group of people to settled it down. Bartenders for the most part remember the people that tip for service and it reflects when you go back up for more beer. Only complaint is a couple of years ago for ST. Paddy's day they had a soul band...was expecting something Irish. Not sure what the other reviewers are looking for...but I hope you find it somewhere besides McCoys. read more

McCoy's is... A mixed bag. For starters, the drinks are super cheap and very strong. The pool tables are usually available, and the patio is great for smokers, even in the winter as they have a heating lamp. The service is very hit-and-miss. Sometimes the bartenders will seem inebriated themselves. Here's the bad: the music is deafeningly loud, and the patrons can be unsavory. The last time I was there, I was shocked to see a couple having sex in the corner. They were largely out of sight as they were in the very back, but still. It wasn't even four in the afternoon! I went to this bar today looking for a lost wallet, and was immediately greeted by a completely rude and disrespectful excuse for a bartender, who screamed at me to get out. I tried to ask for my wallet, he continued talking over me, repeating that I needed to leave. The other patrons in the bar just sat quietly sipping their drinks. (At 10am, on a Monday.) This place is an unclean, unkempt shithole, staffed by equally shitty bartenders. Will never go back to this disgusting establishment again. read more
