    Winnie approves of Team Ty!

Team Ty is the BEST! We rescue and live senior dogs. Ty and his team are our vet team. Dr.Ty is an amazing vet. We trust him 1000%! He does what's needed but doesn't push unnecessary treatments. His team is beyond fantastic! We are beyond excited that the practice is expanding! We highly recommend McConnell Veterinary!!!

Dr. McConnell is the vet everyone wishes they had for their furry family members. Finding that kind of care, compassion, competence at any vet practice (anywhere in the world) is beyond rare. I moved overseas for a few years and hated not having Dr. McConnell as my vet. You are not a dollar sign when you walk in the door here. He and his staff have cared for my dogs and cats over the years with nothing but grace, caring and compassion. Don't trust your animals to anyone else.

They were happy to make an appointment that same day, a Saturday, very shortly after I called, and they told me they didn't mind at all that I was not an existing patient, since I already have a vet I've been taking pets to for decades. The front desk person, who's name I can't remember, was extremely friendly, kind, and caring. (manager: he's the man who was working the front desk on Sat/Sun Nov 22/23, 2025.) The vet tech, Matthew, was also extremely friendly and caring, and very knowledgeable as well. He carefully explained treatment options and pricing, and helped me make informed choices. Dr. Sontag was the vet that saw my cat. At first I wasn't sure about him, Dr. Sontag wasn't super talkative, and didn't refer to my cat by his name. He did an exam, told me my cat was very sick (which obviously I knew) and wanted to do some tests. At the time, I was concerned that he didn't have much to say. But in retrospect, I think he was just super focused on figuring out what was wrong with my cat so he could come up with a treatment plan. Once the test results were back, Dr. Sontag was very thorough in talking to me about the results, diagnosis, and treatment plan. It became clear to me that he had been focused on figuring out what was making my cat so sick and helping him get well again. Dr. Sontag also checked in with me daily for the next few days to make sure my cat was improving and ask if I had additional questions. I wouldn't hesitate to have Dr. Sontag see either of my cats in the future. He's not going to be the type of vet who tells you how cute your pet is, and offers a lot of emotional support, but he will focus on finding the cause and appropriate treatment for your pets ailments, which is really what matters. As for pricing, I'm guessing other people's reviews mentioning high prices were either the prices before the new ownership, or the people have not been to any vet clinic lately. I was really surprised, the prices I was charged for exam, test, and medications, were right in line with what my usual vet charges, even though I was at Valley Oak on a weekend, and was not a regular client of theirs. I would recommend Valley Oak for people looking for a primary care vet in Scotts Valley, and for people needing to see a vet when their primary vet is closed or doesn't have any appointments available.

I'm glad Exotic Pet Clinic of Santa Cruz has the expertise and resources to help them. The fact that they don't even treat cats and dogs is reassuring, knowing that my rabbit is being cared for by professionals who are dedicated to and have valuable experience with small animals and other less common pets. In fact, I was referred here by a different veterinary hospital closer to home who knew my bunny would be in better hands at the Exotic Pet Clinic of Santa Cruz. As it turned out, they were attentive to my bunny's needs from the moment I stepped inside the exam room, and showed understanding toward my situation and how overwhelming having a sick pet can be. I appreciated that they were honest and detailed when providing answers to my questions and options for treatments to address my bunny's condition, and clear and upfront about potential outcomes. They even explained the itemized billing in a way that was easy to comprehend. It's a bit of a drive out for me from San Jose (and the twists and turns on highway 17 are definitely not my fave), but it was worth it to get my bunny the help he needed. I'm grateful to all of the staff on site. And having a place like this around is something I don't take for granted.

This is an emergency room. When was the last time you went to a human emergency room and didn't have to wait more than two hours? The only cases that don't have to wait two hours come by ambulance. This place is utterly amazing. The staff is super professional. They take care of everybody wonderfully and yes, just like all medical whether animal or human, they are desperately understaffed. I've been coming here for over 30 years and only receive the best, most attentive, kindest and gracious of care. Folks need to understand how long things take and what the word triage means. I am disgusted reading one star reviews from people with no concept of how much time good thorough animal care takes and how much things cost. An estimate is an estimate they have only ever charged me for what was needed. They are utter professionals, a very highly regarded facility and quite frankly all you people that are sending in one star reviews don't deserve their service or care. People in this field go into this field because they care - more than most- and they deal with and see a lot of really hard situations on a daily basis. Every time my husband and I have been here (with at least four different pets through the last 10-15 years ranging from mild to very serious) the care and veterinary expertise has been very good. I'm grateful for that! I hope they can get the support they need so they can help our communities' fur family members effectively and efficiently.

I think we are "Furequent Flyers" at this point- the staff here have nursed Lorraine through tumor removals, teeth extractions, a dog attack, rampant diarrhea, and many, many vaccines. I feel that the care team at Aptos-Cap are kind and also very professional: They have always ensured my dog has access to the highest standard of care but are considerate and non-judgmental when I decline procedures or ask for cheaper alternatives (e.g. declining an echocardiogram and sticking to x-rays and careful monitoring of my dog's heart condition). I've had the pleasure of working with all three veterinarians at the clinic and each of them are cost conscious, reminding me of prices as they build the invoice and suggesting strategies for meeting my needs. For example, they determined that my very anxious dog needed a sedative (gabapentin?) for a procedure and Dr. Hage explained to me the steep price difference between intravenous versus the slower but cheaper oral option. My dog is on multiple medications and they have happily given me paper-copies of the prescriptions to buy my meds at wholesale pharmacies. All the techs I've had are very gentle and patient with my dog (shout-out Trish!). Their new clinic is *noice* and feels exceptionally clean. Georgia at the front desk is the sweetest but on top of it with last-minute requests. No complaints about costs... Vet care in California is extraordinarily expensive across the board and Santa Cruz County is one of the most expensive places in the state to live or run a small business. I waited in long long lines at the free monthly vet care clinics when I was younger. You get what you pay for.
