After one visit with Dr. Gary, I don't trust anyone else with my animals. I have brought in 3 of my animals here and he has taken great care of them all. He is incredibly knowledgable, experienced and laid back. When my little dog had a stomach bug, Dr. Gary was able to put me at ease and prescribed a very mild treatment that worked almost instantly. There is no fuss here and Dr. Gary doesn't over prescribe or charge exorbitant prices like every other vet we have ever been to. He does his service out of a school bus in Mountain Feed, which is old school and simple. I have been inside the bus when my puppy got her checkup. It is clean, organized and well maintained. I don't know why I was expecting an odor but there wasn't one, unlike every vet hospital I have been to. I was genuinely very impressed! I don't know exactly how long Dr. Gary has been practicing, but you can tell its his life passion and he has an incredible breadth of knowledge. My animals actually love going to see him and there is no shaking/trauma involved. Dr. Gary is so relaxed and skilled at what he does so the animals have no reason to be fearful. The experience for them is as painless as possible, which makes me feel much more relaxed as well. What a relief! Dr. Gary is so personable so I also truly enjoy coming in :) Dr. Gary and his practice are a true gem. Even though I am moving out of the area, I am still bringing my pets to Mountain Vet- totally worth it! Plus, you can't beat the prices. Filthy bus used as a clinic! Maybe appropriate if it were in the Tennessee backwoods! I brought my cat to him because a friend recommended his services. She had an irritated bald area that she'd chew on constantly. He gave me three pills to give her every day for 3 days. After the 3rd day, the infection grew worse!! I brought her to the dermatology animal specialist in Soquel and the vet diagnosed her issue that was totally unrelated to what Dr. Gary diagnosed!! Gave her an injection and prescribed a cream that cleared up the issue in a week!! Avoid this quack at all costs! And, he didn't take her temperature! I've never had a vet not do that! read more

Dr Gary is the best. I just took my 13 year old Bootsie to him who was sick first thing this morning. It's not like this cat to get sick and he does have anal gland issues which I have to watch closely. Bootsie was fine . Dr said because of his thick fur he had probably been over grooming and he needs brushing more. I am so overprotective of this cat. He's my baby. I love Dr Gary! His "office" is in an old school bus inside the garden center. I was surprised at some of the negative reviews but I think I understand why. Dr. Gary is an awesome vet for every day vet needs: vaccinations, allergies, minor injuries, UTIs, etc. He doesn't run a bunch of expensive tests (that you don't always need) and he doesn't charge for return visits for the same issue. Sometimes it takes more than one visit to zero in on the treatment that will work best for your pet. I'm fine with that. BUT... Dr. Gary is not a one-stop shop... he doesn't do surgery or cancer treatment or the specialized stuff. I consider Dr Gary my "partner" in keeping my critter healthy, but he's not the only team member (just like a human child). My last dog had major health issues... She had Dr. Gary for the constant UTIs, a specialist for her rare condition, and a vet that specialized in acupuncture to keep her immune system strong. Here is my recommendation: go take a Red Cross class in Animal First Aid. It's the best $50 you'll ever spend. It will not only train you to take care of basic injuries (and animal CPR), but it will help you stay a bit calmer when your pet is ill/injured because you can assess the situation a bit. The truth is that there are plenty of corporate vets that will use your panic about your pet to run up a large bill and then there compassionate vets that love animals. My cat was hit by a car and went to one local emergency vet who put together a $3,000 estimate BEFORE they had actually examined her! Dr. Gary is definitely the compassionate vet type. If you are looking for an antiseptic office that will run $$$ of tests and can do surgery, this is not the vet for you. read more

Doctor Gary and his team are amazing! I took my 14 year old dachshund to see doctor Gary thinking she was dying but he knew right away it was Lyme disease (he was right!). He has her on a treatment plan and she has really bounced back. We have also taken Petunia to see him for other ailments and he always seems to know exactly what is going on. Luckily for us doctor Gary is also super affordable!! Which is great since we see him at least every 6 months. Doctor Gary is hands down the best veterinarian around! I have two older, medium dogs and I always feel confident with the care and advice I get from him. His prices are incredibly reasonable and I never feel like I got more done than necessary (which is perfect for how my household operates). Please realize this is a vet located in the mountains, so this is not a fancy place. If you're more comfortable with a new, shiny facility, you'll be happier staying in the valley or in Santa Cruz. The moment I arrived, I was welcome by an attractive brunette lady who was a member of his staff (no uniforms), and she told me where the best place was to wait with my nervous puppy. Not only is Dr. Gary the most affordable veterinarian I have ever been to, but he is also the best. He is very personable and he really cares about animals. If you are looking for a no frills country vet, this is the place for you! This veterinarian office is great for the basics. If you need surgery or something major, you would be better off going to a larger veterinary practice in Santa Cruz. I am happy to say that I have found my puppy, a great, trustworthy veterinarian. Saying that Gary is the best vet in the universe doesn't quite go far enough. I can't imagine life without Gary. He's the only vet I completely trust. I have a large dog. He's not normally aggressive, but he HATES the vet. I've never been able to get him into a vet for an exam without having to sedate him, which is expensive and traumatizing. Gary was different. My dog LOVED him. In fact, it seemed like every animal there loved him. Gary just gets animals. Not only that, but Gary is less expensive than any other vet, and very level headed. My dog is now well into his golden years, has seen no vet but Gary for the second half of his life, and is much better off for it. Gary gives very sensible advice for managing his mild arthritis and his hot spots (my dog's primary health challenges). I've also brought my cat into see Gary. She has some health problems, and after over $1000 worth of treatment and testing, I finally brought her all the way from Oakland to see Gary. He told me the hard truth. She has a virus. There's nothing to be done. We can waste a bunch of money testing to see which virus, but as she's been vaccinated, it was obviously not one of the common ones. There isn't really anything to be done except manage her symptoms. Gary had some great suggestions for that, as well. Bottom line, I trust this man with my life. Or my pets' lives, more literally. I hope (selfishly) that he is 1) immortal and 2) never retires. read more
