My crusty aging miniature poodle has been a client of Aptos Capitola Veterinary Hospital since 2020. I think we are "Furequent Flyers" at this point- the staff here have nursed Lorraine through tumor removals, teeth extractions, a dog attack, rampant diarrhea, and many, many vaccines. I feel that the care team at Aptos-Cap are kind and also very professional: They have always ensured my dog has access to the highest standard of care but are considerate and non-judgmental when I decline procedures or ask for cheaper alternatives (e.g. declining an echocardiogram and sticking to x-rays and careful monitoring of my dog's heart condition). I've had the pleasure of working with all three veterinarians at the clinic and each of them are cost conscious, reminding me of prices as they build the invoice and suggesting strategies for meeting my needs. For example, they determined that my very anxious dog needed a sedative (gabapentin?) for a procedure and Dr. Hage explained to me the steep price difference between intravenous versus the slower but cheaper oral option. My dog is on multiple medications and they have happily given me paper-copies of the prescriptions to buy my meds at wholesale pharmacies. All the techs I've had are very gentle and patient with my dog (shout-out Trish!). Their new clinic is *noice* and feels exceptionally clean. Georgia at the front desk is the sweetest but on top of it with last-minute requests. No complaints about costs... Vet care in California is extraordinarily expensive across the board and Santa Cruz County is one of the most expensive places in the state to live or run a small business. I waited in long long lines at the free monthly vet care clinics when I was younger. You get what you pay for. read more

This review has been a long time coming. Years ago, I brought my 12-year-old cat to Capitola Veterinary Hospital to see Dr. May after he developed severe neuropathy and could barely walk. We were good, loyal clients of this clinic and spent thousands of dollars over time on visits, diagnostics, and care. After reviewing his bloodwork, I was told it might be time to consider putting him down. I chose not to accept that. I took him to UC Davis and Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists, where he was correctly diagnosed by both places with diabetes--a basic and treatable condition that had been missed. With proper treatment, I managed his condition successfully for four more years. He lived until 17 and passed from oral cancer--not the condition I was told was essentially the end. Those were four incredibly meaningful years with a cherished family member that I almost lost prematurely based on that initial recommendation. Fast forward to recently--I brought my new kitten in for vaccinations, not realizing this was the same clinic (now Aptos-Capitola Veterinary Hospital) I had previously decided to avoid. Unfortunately, the experience reinforced my decision. I requested that vaccines be administered in the tail, which is supported by the 2020 AAHA/AAFP Feline Vaccination Guidelines to reduce risk and improve outcomes in the rare case of injection-site sarcoma. Initially, there was no objection, and the veterinarian was able to administer the first vaccines calmly and without stress. However, when the technical staff struggled to administer subsequent vaccines, the tone shifted completely. Instead of handling the situation professionally, they blamed me for making an "unusual" request and suggested I was causing unnecessary difficulty. What was most unacceptable was how I was treated personally. The staff spoke to me in a condescending and dismissive way, at one point implying I didn't understand English. I have lived in the United States for 25 years and have worked in professional roles in the tech industry. That comment was both inappropriate and offensive. Between a past failure to catch a basic diagnosis--despite extensive testing--and a recent experience marked by poor communication, lack of professionalism, and disrespect, I cannot recommend this clinic. I strongly encourage others to seek second opinions and advocate for their pets. read more

Love this vet hospital!! Doctors, techs, receptionists, & practice manager are all fantastic. They practice excellent medicine and have friendly, positive, and caring attitudes. Great rapport with my pets! Rooms are bright, spacious, and clean with soothing music playing. Staff seem happy. Because of all of this, I don't mind that it costs a bit more than my previous vet. Dr. May was very throughout and experienced Vet. He's fantastic, knowledgeable and spot on with my dog's diagnosis. He's very respectful about asking your permission before doing certain test/x-rays, blood draws etc and reviews prices with you. Then you can decide if you want to do it or not. I appreciate that as their prices is prob on the higher end of the scale. However, my usual vet are too full and can't get me in. So I was able to get in much sooner for an urgent matter, and willing to pay their higher cost. I much rather go to Dr. May than our local ER Vet hospital that will make you wait for 4-5+ hrs easily and it makes it a very unpleasant experience. Going to Aptos Capitola Vet Hospital is such the opposite. It's conveniant, close and a much better experience with less wait, great Dr and new facility. They have in house bloodwork and x-rays. I'm so happy I was able to get my dog's issue seen and felt we were well taken care of. TERRIFYING! I usually never complain, but I feel that it's best to let everyone know what a terrible experience I had with the staff & Vet at Capitola Veterinary Hospital. I have never complained on Yelp about anything, but my cat got severely wounded at this Vet & was given back to me blood all over his fur & in very bad shape. I needed to get my Ferrell kitty (1yr old) vaccinated & microchips but he is VERY scared of other humans, although my cat is super affectionate & cuddles with me. I called a few times before my appointment & explained that my cat needed an extra gentle approach because he is still in the process of being tamed. I explained to the Vet & staff that I was happy to assist in any way possible & hold my cat while they did the exam, or let me be in the exam room to help acclimate him to people. (Which they allowed me do with his bother a few weeks ago) The same Vet lady said it was now against policy to be with my pet during an examination. Long story short, they took off the cat collar & harness for the exam (I've never had a vet do that. The same Dr Vet Lady didn't take the collar off his brother during his appointment a few weeks ago.) But they said it was "policy" My cat apparently, & expectedly escaped during his exam without his harness & cat collar. And "scratched" the Vet Lady. The Dr is very young & I wonder if her inexperience contributed to my cat being hurt? I wish they would have let me hold him to soothe his nerves during the exam. He was given back to me with a very bloody face & patches of blood all over his body. (I have no idea why he would have been wounded like this during his examination! They said his nose was bleeding? He has never had a nose bleed before. They gave me no explanation as to how or why this happened. My little guy was given back to me with blood all over his fur & face. What did they do to him? The Vet technician wrapped a dirty stained stinky blanket around my cats head & body so he could barely breathe in his crate. From a hygienic perspective, that is just not sanitary to use a dirty blanket & I hope my little guy hasn't been exposed to any germs from other animals that might have been on the blanket. The Vet Lady had talked me out of microchipping my cats brother a few weeks ago. Now he is missing and is not microchipped and my wounded kitty has now run off into the wild without any vaccinations or microchip as well. Im praying for both their return. I was hoping a female staff would have deeper compassion & naturally be more gentle & caring, but I found them to be very aggressive, & violent with a "factory" approach to animals. Which seems to be their "policy". The rooms are also very dirty & the floors have track stains. I don't think they care enough to keep the facility clean & sterile. If you choose to go to this Vet, I hope you are mindful of sanitation requirements a Vet should have a pay attention to the cleanliness. Also know that it's ok to request a cleaner environment for our pets & a more compassionate & gentle approach to care for our fur babies. There might be "policy" in place, however each pet is unique & should require a customized treatment plan for their different needs & personalities. Vets and staff are all wonderful. Very knowledgeable and friendly. My dog loves his visits. Tail starts wagging as soon as I pull into the parking lot. There are dedicated parking spots with reserved signs in front of the office making it convenient for anyone with mobility issues. I've brought all of my dogs and cats to Capitola Vet for over 20 years. No surprises on final bill, never pressured if I opt out on a preventive test. Last visit I decided to finally do an allergy shot. 2 days later he was a different dog. He's s 90 pound lab so dosage was pricey but well with it. I don't even know where to begin except i've been going here since 2014 when my dog Lanai had her first ear infection. Than it was an urgent anal gland infection which required sedation and surgery I cried bc of her size she's 5 pounds i was scared she wouldn't make it after sedation , but the vet reassured us that they do a blood work test before to make sure it will be safe for her. so were are always reassured that lanai would be in great care here. They are also very upfront with cost and fees so no hidden costs. Over the years it's been hard to get same day and next day office appointments but they always have drop off urgent visits available . It's when you drop off ur dog and the Doctors assess ur dog in-between their schedules office visits . All the staff here as well has been so kind and quick with getting back to us and following up on lanai. They gave use two second chances with her when she got cancer and when i brought her in fearful bc she was severely jaundice and I in-denial that it could be cancer related, so we got three more months with her. we saw both Dr. May and Dr Mitchener here. They were very respectful, caring, knowledgeable, and honest. I recommend this vet hospital and would take all my pets here. in the last three months Lanai was seen exclusively by Dr May due to her special case. I just wanted to say thank Dr May for helping us through this and being so patient with us and making sure Our little Lanai had the best care towards the end of her life. I'll never for get when i came to pick up pain meds to keep her comfortable till her euthanasia date, and was doubtful and second guessing myself the girls comforted me and helped me understand the kind gift we can give to our pets to end their time of suffering. read more

TERRIBLE. Greedy and don't care at all about your pet. I came in for a routine senior cat checkup and the "checkup" basically consisted of weighing my cat and one press on the tummy. That's what you pay for? My cat also has a small lump and they said they would follow up with a call the next day to see how my cat was doing on the antibiotics and they never did. Shocking. I called back a couple weeks after the appointment they had missed an ingrown nail that was causing my cat pain and if they could help because my nail clippers couldn't fit between the nail and nail pad and my poor cat was screaming in pain. They coldly responded that they are fully booked and snidely said that I would have to pay for a PET EMERGENCY FEE... for something that the vet missed in the first place! It would literally take them 5 minutes to help clip the nail. I will never ever go back here there are many other options in this community. The Capitola Veterinary Hospital really came through for us. Our dog was really in distress and they took us in when three other vets would not see him, including his regular vet (no more). Becca worked us into the schedule. Victoria took great care of Max and the doctor followed up very quickly. How happy are we with CVA? As happy as you can be when your pet is lovingly cared for in the manner they provided. And, by the way, I have been charged much much more for much less in terms of service and meds. Even with an Emergency visit, CVA was still very, very reasonable. Excellent staff, techs and docs. I highly recommend CVA. read more

SO SO SO disappointed with the care my dog received here. This veterinary clinic is completely careless. They are more focused on the money they can get out of people instead of the care they are giving to the animal. Let me start my saying the people at the front desk are totally disorganized. I called to set up an appointment for vaccinations with Michelle, and asked for the estimate for the appointment to me send to me, which they did, however when I called the next day to ask a clarifying question they said there was no appointment on the books for me....Even though I had confirmed the date with Michelle several times and had the email from her. That week my dog pulled a muscle in her back leg. They were able to get her in for an exam and said to have her rest it for the next month and they would give her another exam at the appointment for shots that I already had scheduled. A month later we showed up for our appointment they said they did not have anything about the exam happening written down, but they would do the shots. I was awfully upset as keeping our dog on bed rest for another couple weeks until the could fit us in for the exam sounded impossible. As they took her back I reminded them of the injury in her leg. When she was done I carried her to the car and she nipped at me when I got close to her back leg. I called back the office to see what this might be from and I spoke to Shelly, the lead vet tech, and was told the careless vet techs put the most painful shot for the dog into her already injured leg!! She went on to assure me that all her techs were extremely knowledgeable, but had no reason why they would make this mistake....my guess is the are POORLY TRAINED!!! My dog could not bear weight on her already hurt leg for another week. I was promised one of the vet manager would call me back...that was over a month ago and I have received zero follow up, but you bet they still send me emails to try and get me to spend money with them. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. If you truly care about the well-being of your pet- take them somewhere else. read more

I love Capitola Veterinary Hospital, and so does my dog Odin. He has allergy issues, and we've been to at least 4 other vets. He has never liked a vet like he does here. As soon as we pull into the parking lot he gets extremely excited and can't wait to go in. It's almost hard to get him to leave sometimes. The staff there are SUPER friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and completely willing to work with you on costs and determine what the best course of action is for your budget, all you have to do is ASK....like an adult. I always feel very comfortable knowing Dr. May will go over every option available first before administering any treatments to Odin. He also wants to make sure to try alternative routes such as diet change first before turning to more expensive or invasive options. Dr. May always makes me feel heard. The staff are the sweetest group, and Michelle even came outside to make sure I wasn't getting harassed by a man who approached me in a way that made me and Odin very uncomfortable. And she asked him to leave. That was well above and beyond her job duties. Jordan and Victoria are 2 of Odins favorite people and he LOVES to see them. They are both very knowledgeable, well trained, and educated in the field, they consistently make sure all my needs and Odins needs are met, and any treatments or medications are clearly discussed and instructions are understood before I leave. The COVID precautions Capitola Veterinary Hospital are taking to ensure safety are very well planned out and executed as well. We have been going to this vet for a year and will continue to do so. Been bringing our cat(s) here since 2013. The doctors have been great. This year we struggled with the loss of our companion kitty Lulu - companion for a stage 4 breast cancer fighter. She was a life line for us for 8 years until a brain tumor determined her fate. An administrative female working there now, has a horrible verbal tone on the phone the last few times I called. Seemed put out and hounded us for payment of some medication we purchased, literally the day before. That same day CVC knew we were taking Lulu into see an outside referal specialist for something unknown but life threatening that day. earlier that day I requested a bill copy of previous visit for my husband, to be emailed. The same administrative verbal tone was unfriendly, put out (requested mid Oct- recieved ot today?) - and proceeded to inquire about the payment for under $100, for the previous days meds. Wtf - a day without payment for pennies, with no acknowledged empathy for our experience with our loss of her. They dropped the ball hiring this one. Paying the balance today and will never return to them. Still no empathetic condolences- even after I responded to the email, that she passed the day after we were in theor office. No follow up on their part - I found a better bedside manner with another vet in the area that ensures they hire administrative that care. read more

My original experience with this place as a new resident here was positive, however after my experience today they will never have my business again. I have a family emergency and have to fly today with my dog who is 15 and has anxiety with travel because we don't know how long we'll have to be away. We reached out to them today at lunchtime after booking the flight and they waited until 5:15pm today to tell us that (despite my dog being seen 3 weeks ago for a checkup and shots) would need a checkup before they prescribed a sedative. When I told them I live right down the street and can be there in no time they didn't offer me to come in and the front desk assistant, who is extremely rude mind you, would not offer to reverify why my dog needed to be seen again for something she's been routinely prescribed over the years from other vets where I've lived for travel. Hospitals are for emergencies and while this isn't directly life threatening I gave them as much notice as I was afforded myself for this emergency and the front desk assistant took the scape goat approach to say "well I'm not a tech and I'm not a doctor but I left her a message saying it was urgent and that's all I can do." read more

Everyone in the office was extremely friendly and professional. The Dr. took her time explaining all of my options and answering all my questions. She was very gracious when I declined x-rays and opted for meds and a wait and see approach. My dog is 15 years old and I've shifted his care to a palliative care approach, let's be real, he's 15. I've been to other vets that have been super judgmental and tried to make me feel bad about not wanting to do all of the things that they want to do. I'm grateful I found a vet that respects my choices and provides excellent care. I could not be more pleased with they way they cared for my little fur baby. Had a very bad experience with this place. Took a recent adoption from the Santa Cruz shelter in because he was in pain and having trouble pooing. I ended up paying a bunch for some topical spray pain killer along with all the other fees and that was it. no medicine for the likely cause of the problem, worms. They did call the next day and ask if he was dragging his butt around and told me I should call them if he did. They just ran up a bill for me on the pain med and other stuff he needed (which he hated) and I ended up going to a good pet supply shop and just getting the medicine and taking care of the problem for next to nothing. It wasnt a big deal, but they didnt tell me that. I looked for myself online and found out what I needed and wont visit them again. I'm rarely a reviewer on Yelp, but I really loved the care this crew gave us for our beloved dog. We came here on the recommendation of family several years ago, when our dog was pretty healthy. They were great with routine things as he aged: arthritis, dental concerns; they would often give us discounts for bundling multiple, necessary interventions into a single visit. They were always compassionate and loved our dog as much as we did. Front office staff was also very helpful in submitting invoices to our insurance company. The real skill for the medical staff here came when they detected cancer for our dog on a screening exam. This was picked up early on a routine checkup. We were referred immediately to surgeons and oncologists. They estimated that our dog had 6 months or so to live, perhaps a little bit more with surgery and chemotherapy. In the end, he got 2.5 years more. Every day with him was a gift. We really credit Dr. May and his colleagues for picking up this cancer so early... I'm sure that we would not have had nearly so much time with our dog if it had been detected later. In sum: caring, compassionate, and thorough. Great place and I would recommend it to anybody. read more

Everyone there is thorough and kind and treat Dexter and Lily as if they're part of their own families. For all the 5 star reviewers that liked the time and detail offered by Dr May et al when outlining the care your pet needed I can offer some context on that. They are trying to up sell you, and it sounds like it worked. This vet preys on the fact that people love their pets and want to do whatever it takes to keep them healthy and happy. I know I feel that way about my dog. So I took my dog to Capitola Vet Hospital based on the good reviews and for the routine stuff (shots, check ups, etc.) they seemed fine. I mean who cares really if it costs a few dollars more than somewhere else. However, I took my dog in for some fairly significant mouth work that needed done and Dr. May spent a lot of time talking to me and telling me all the things that needed done and what the options were as he saw them. Then he quoted me an estimate of between $2600 and $4000 depending on what they found when they got into the surgery. I decided to think about it because it seemed pretty high. I went back and forth on whether to get the surgery. Oh, so I don't forget, I was charged almost $200 for this information. I was also told that I should get a lot of expensive tests before the surgery to find out what the risks were, etc. Long story a little less long... I went to another vet a couple of miles away (Soquel Animal Hospital) and asked them if they could take care of my dog's mouth. Check up, blood work pre surgery, and surgery, $1250. My dog is now happy and healthy and we're not broke. I was rather upset with Capitola Vet at that point because it seemed to me that they were trying to gouge me and preying on the fact that people love their pets and will do anything for them. I know that there are lots of people who find it unseemly to balk at the price of something that relates to their pet's health and welfare and this vet takes advantage of that. I rarely write reviews but I just wanted to get my 2 cents (more than a thousand dollars in this case) into the mix so that you can make an informed decision in the event that your furry little friend needs veterinary care and you are thinking about going to this place. They are a ripoff and I resent the fact that people like this go into this field. Money over pets should be their motto. read more
