Growing up in Sonora this place was always the place to go for pets or supplies or anything in between, went there today for the first time in many years and the place has fallen apart, it's dirty it's gross and it smelled so bad in there. It was hot it was humid, and back to the smell the cages were so dirty and tanks looked terrible this place has gone downhill it seems the owners don't care about the business, I mean it was bad, I'd never go back that's for sure. I was in there for 45 seconds and I had to leave because I was gagging. My whole family had to leave as well for the same reason, it wasn't just a bad day for them, the place is disgusting, poor animals that have to live in there. Edit after the manager responded, negative sir, the smell was not just animals, I've been to many pet stores that smelled like pet stores, this place smelled like complete filth, I've been going to mcclouds pet store since I was a kid and I'm now 38 years old, the place has never been in such terrible shape, is there different owners from back in the day? I am so impressed with the employees, went in looking for a bigger "condo " for our Ball Python, the kid that helped did such a great job very attentive, and very knowledgeable about my snake, I walked out with a new snake Condo and more , so good job I only will shop with you McClouds, keeping it local always.. 5/1/2018 , called Mcclouds with concern that Cookie was ill, explaining what is going on. After talking to Donovan about Cookie he suggested to bring her up and make sure you cover her cage with a towel to make it dark, which I wouldn't have though about. I visited this store today (28 Dec 2019 at around 1:30 pm) with my young granddaughter just to browse. The first thing that I noticed upon entering was the horrific smell. I don't know if it was the Guinea pigs near the door or the parrot or something else entirely, but it was just awful. I do not have a powerful sense of smell, so it must have been unbearable for the average person. I gritted my teeth and pushed on, because my granddaughter wanted to see the fish. They have a large selection here, certainly, but nearly all of the tanks looked very dirty... both inside and out. The whole store just made me feel dirty by being in it. The gal at the register never bothered to acknowledge us even once. I hate to give my money to the bigger national franchises and I shop the local small businesses whenever I can, but I definitely won't be back to this store. Yuck! read more

I was browsing the store which was in bad shape, the beta fishes had lost their color, there were 2 deceased fishes in tanks, one of which you could see it's ribs meaning it had been there for awhile. We purchased a pet, asked a few questions, but the employee ensured us he has never had anyone have a problem. We get home, and we had a problem. The pet we had gotten had a eye infection, a full eye infection. Did research and it said the only way to get rid of it was surgery, so unfortunately we took the pet back . So sad because the poor thing probably didn't get help. I would say I don't recommend this place, but those pets need someone to take proper care of them. read more

This place is terrible!!! First it was SO INSANELY hot in there I actually couldn't even breathe even though the temperature outside was probably 65° and it was 10:30am. And very very stuffy and stinky. The dogs drink water out of a hamster dribbler and they were laying on juice bottles that had frozen water inside them to keep cool. But I still don't know how they were able to breathe in there. There were three employees, young males and me and my mom were not greeted by a single one. While out of town and visiting my sister in Sonora yesterday, she said she needed cat food and wanted to stop into McCloud's since it had been awhile since she had been there. Well, we were beyond disappointed and actually horrified at what we saw. The place is filthy and the way in which the animals are "displayed" is down right disgusting. And one of the dogs did not look well at all. It used to be the best store for pet supplies in Sonora, but not anymore. Please do not support this business. And with so many animal shelters with wonderful, adoptable animals, waiting for their forever home, why are pets still being sold in stores? Because people continue to buy animals. McCloud's Pets - This dog does not look well! - Pet Stores Near Me - Sonora, California

I hate to differ from small business in our small town but McClouds service could be better. I recently started my dog on a Nature Balance type of dog brand and the first time I purchased it the young man at the counter wanted all my info so I could get started on the "purchase a certain # get a bag free" and I was in a hurry so all I could give him was my last name and said I would be back. The next time I came I apparently grabbed a different type because he told me that one wasn't eligible, ok i understand. So I made sure I had the original type for my next visit and even told the young man I had a index card started but he didn't write down that I was purchasing a bag on this date. So now I'm 1 for 3. Today i came in to purchase another bag and there was a mess right by the front door because new items arrived and needed to be shelved. Is there anyplace else they can be organized...like a back office? Besides that I went to purchase my dogs food and the woman at the counter was involved in about 3 other conversations happening around her, I just didn't feel important as a customer should feel. I plan to give them one last chance but if things are still the same I'm afraid I'll have to take my business somewhere else and that's a shame because it takes away from our community. read more

Their animals are poorly taken care of. Their reptiles often do not have water or adequate hiding places to feel secure along with their ball pythons being horrible overcrowded, often 6 or more in a small terrarium. There is one snake in particular that is poorly taken care of, a 4-5ft long Brazilian rainbow boa they call "big mama" who is constantly soaking in her water dish. This may seem innocent enough until you realize she's soaking due to a fierce lack of humidity within her terrarium. This breed of boa is meant to have 80-90% humidity within their tank while big mamas tank probably sits around 20-30% (it is impossible to tell because none of their terrariums have humidity of temperature cages) this lack of humidity is something that would generally kill this breed of boa provided she wasn't constantly in her water dish. Aside from that she is also kept in a very undersized terrarium with no hides and only a water dish. Their dogs are treated like hamsters, kept by 4 or 5 in glass cages with water drippers instead of a bowl. Their rats and mice are also overcrowded, often having 50 or more in very undersized cages. Their customer service has much to be desired at least from their manager Donna, she is very abrasive and often you will wait 10-15 minutes to get any help from her if she even ends up helping you at all. Even when helping you she will be aggressive and rude, especially when asking to see a new snake they had gotten in, she very loudly asked me "you gonna buy it?" As if she has better things to do than show a customer an animal they may wish to purchase. After that I ended up waiting 20 minutes for her assistance, I'm sure she was only waiting for me to leave so she wouldn't have to assist a customer. Even with all these issues I still often purchased my feeder rats and supplies from them because I wanted to support local business and i still liked some of the employees. After spending nearly 500 dollars here over the past 5 months, my patience was finally broken when i was accused of stealing from them with no proof despite them having and i quote "18 cameras watching constantly". I was told by Donna that I am "up to no good", and was told that "you're allowed to buy your feeders here but then you have to get out". As a frequent and loyal customer, I was shocked. I will no longer be supporting this business because they don't know how to care for their animals or their customers. If you are thinking of buying your pets here, I recommend petsmart or purchasing online, they're both cheaper anyway. read more

You should NEVER have to apologize for protecting your baby, even if your baby is a "pet." Everything I did or said was in the interest of defending my bird. First of all, you should know I TOLD McCloud's I would be writing this review. That's why you see the five-star review below: a lone voice crying out from the wilderness of mostly one-star reviews. I was only "rude" because I had been lied to. "Come right down and get your bird's wings clipped!" they said. I slipped into mama bear mode when I saw the incompetence of the staff. I took my twenty-nine-year-old double yellowheaded Amazon parrot to McCloud's to get his wings and nails clipped. I ended up wasting a large chunk of my day and my parrot is still unclipped. After what I saw, I wouldn't let McCloud's employees within shouting distance of my bird. They told me on the phone they had time to clip my bird's wings when they did not. I heard them describe my bird as a "blue and gold Amazon," a species that does not exist. Warning bells went off. The woman up front tried to have her fingers shortened by sticking them inside the pet carrier. I saved her from her own stupidity by pulling it out of reach just in time. More warning bells went off. Anyone with even a passing familiarity of adult double yellowheaded Amazon parrots should know better. I couldn't trust such people with my bird. When I discovered the uneducated (and most likely incompetent) woman was the one who was supposed to help me clip my bird's wings, I freaked out, fearing for the safety of my bird. A person who does not know how to correctly restrain a parrot could suffocate the bird or injure it in other ways. An incompetent clipper could cause grievous wounds. When she saw my reticence, the inexperienced (and perhaps masochistic XD ) woman behind the counter told me I would have to wait a half hour for the owner. Mind you, I was told on the phone they had time to do it immediately. It was a very long "half hour." For awhile, I waited at the store, telling myself not to be alarmed by the incompetence I'd seen. I told myself the new owner must be the competent woman who had helped me clip my bird many times before and that everything would be all right. I left for awhile, got a tea at Jack-in-the-Box, drove up the hill and came back. The wait wasn't worth it. I didn't recognize the new owner and she was immediately hostile: "I called you today to tell you I could not clip your bird's wings!" "What? No one called me! I called you," I said, "And I was told to come right down." "Well, I don't have time to do it," she snorted. "Then how come I was told to come down?" I asked. "I don't know. I wasn't here," she said, as if she had no control over her employees and no responsibility for the promises they made. After a tense exchange she said she would restrain my bird while I clipped. I ALMOST relented, but everything about her told me to execute my responsibility as guardian and remove my precious parrot from the situation. "You're not touching my bird" I said as I stalked out of the pet store. "Oh, and you'll be getting a one-star rating on Yelp!" I said as a parting shot. That's why the five-star rating you see is below. Hopefully Yelp! will remove it once they know the person is most likely affiliated with the pet store. I'm pretty sure only the owner and maybe her staff could have heard me say I would give the store a bad review. :) I won't be going back. I have shopped at McClouds for 17 years. The store always had a great selection of pets. Their fish tanks were always clean and well stocked. Well, the store has gone downhill while the prices have gone uphill. On November 16, 2021, I went in to the store and the smell almost knocked me off my feet. I know animal cages can become stinky but wow! Then I noticed the fish tanks were full of algae, with some tanks so obscured that the fish could not be seen. I wanted an Angel Fish, frozen bloodworms and millet seed. When their small freezer was moved to reach the bloodworms, hundreds of cockroaches scrambled everywhere! I purchased a tiny Angel Fish and was charged $12.95! When I told "Allyssa" I thought I was charged wrong for the fish she stated that it was listed as that price in their "price book". I told her that I could buy two Angel Fish at Pet Smart for that price. So after 17 years I will be buying my fish from Pet Smart. McClouds needs to seriously clean up their act! read more

This is the one and only place I go for knowledge on reptiles and fish. Within this last year my family has adopted a bearded dragon and a corn snake. Ray(or Ryan), really cared and took the time to teach us the care for both reptiles. He was patient with my 8 year olds questions. Then later on when one of our lizards was not feeling well he went out of his way to answer our call and take a look over our beardie when we brought him in. It was our simple mistake, and it was an easy fix to get him better. My husband had a great experience with Justin over in the fish section,he gave us his input in our fresh water community tank and what we could add to it and how to take care of it better. Most of the employees where very welcoming. Best place for actual knowledge about reptiles and fish, I dont trust Petsmart for actual husbandry techniques. read more

Bought a rat for my daughter and it promptly had 15 babies cause this disgusting pet store mixes the sex so all the animals are having a inbreeding orgy. They told me they would buy the babies back for $1.25 then recanted there statement telling me they cant do anything for me. The rabbits were also very pregnant. Its so bad that they had a wall full of sick and dying animals. Do not buy a signal animal from this place. Go to petsmart, or buy your puppies from a reputable breeder. I don't leave Yelp reviews for the most part but this pet store and their staff have been so amazing since I started keeping fish that I just had to. I am a first time aquarium owner and purchased my fish there from the very beginning. Each staff member was so knowledgeable and helped me pick the right fish for my space and skill level. Since then, I have learned that keeping fish isn't always as easy as it may look... I have had all kinds of issues along the way and the staff has been amazingly helpful as I build a sustainable habitat for my little friends. Recently, my goldfish got extremely sick. I was terrified they would die and even after extensive googling and water testing at home, I just couldn't figure out the problem. I brought a sample of my water in and not only did we find the problem but I was given extensive instructions on how to stabilize my little habitat. Without overselling me or rushing me through the process, the staff at Mcclouds pretty much saved my fish. They were so patient with my novice and will get all of my pet related business in the future! In addition, they have an excellent selection of dog food and supplies for any pet lover and it's just enjoyable to go in and look at the beautiful aquariums, meet their house parrots and pet the little bunnies. I know many have an issue with selling puppies but as long as puppies are being sold, these guys will take good care of them and, most importantly, vet their breeders very well. If I could give zero stars I would. I walk past this store and had to take a double take because I was so appalled to see dogs panting in "cages" that aren't even for dogs! They look like there shouldve been hamsters or rats in there. So I walk in there and start saying these dogs are gasping for air, they are so hot! My husband and I would always go here for anything we needed for our bearded dragon and were probably in there every week or so, but we won't be going back now. The service has definitely gone downhill. While we were in the middle of being checked out one time the girl stopped right in the middle and gave her lunch order to one of the other guys there and completely ignored us. It could have easily waited because there was no one else in line. Then a couple weeks ago we were petting some of the puppies in the window and one attacked my husband and wouldn't let go of his shirt. He also got a small bite on his hand. We thought it wasn't very safe since those dogs were at perfect face level for a little kid so we told the only guy working there that day and his response was "Well, they're puppies in a very condescending tone." We've both been around a lot of puppies and have never seen ones that aggressive. Even without that experience it still would have been nice if the guy would have apologized or moved the puppies. We didn't want them to do anything, just to acknowledge that it was unsafe and try to keep someone else from getting hurt. His rudeness and the general "I don't care" attitude in that place will definitely keep us from going back. read more

The customer service here is deplorable a bunch of young guys who act like they don't care about you or the animals. The animals are in small confined spaces. There's an Eclectus parrot whose cage is a third of the size it needs. I was bringing my animals here to be groomed but they manhandled and traumatized them so badly I'll never come back. Prices are not consistent nor reasonable... just because it's a small town doesn't mean they should have the attitude that there's nowhere else you can go. When I brought up the inconsistencies with the pricing and how it's always different for the same service they told me if I find somewhere else cheaper than I'm welcome to go there. I really appreciate this pet store. They are very knowledgeable and friendly. Would rather go here then Petsmart any day of the week. Each employee has a specialty as to what kind of animal they're knowledgeable about. Of course, they are a pet store and the animals are in temporary enclosures. They obviously cared a great deal for my sweet puppy, and trimmed her nails before I left with her and answered all of our questions with a smile. She got sick a few weeks after we bought her, and the store was gracious enough to offer to pay for part of her meds if she needed them. Can't get better than that! Do NOT allow your family, friends or anyone you care about work for this company!! One of the owners of this company hired my daughter (A minor) and then after only seven days of working for the company, without any training of any kind by any of the owners or staff, was fired by the owner. The owner stated that my daughter wasn't 'catching on fast enough', even though she had absolutely no training. This isn't even the reason why I am writing this review, it gets WAY worse. The OWNER fired my daughter BUT, they didn't follow California Labor Codes by having their Final Check ready for them the same day they were fired. (Labor Code 201, Cynthia) The owner stated that it would be ready the next day. Well, the next day my daughter drove down to McCloud's to get her Final Pay Check and she was told the same thing, that it would be ready the next day. Once she finally got paid, three days after she was fired, she deposited the check. Well, the check that was given to my daughter by the owner three days AFTER the law states that it is to be issued, BOUNCED! Yes, they paid a minor with a rubber check! They didn't have the funds in their bank account to cover a check that was under $200. Wow! I called down to McCloud's to speak to the owners to try and resolve the matter civilly but these owners are pathological liars. First I spoke to the husband about how my daughter used to work for him but was fired and then received a check bouncing that bounced. He immediately started defending the firing, not the bounced check. He stated that my daughter wasn't fired, that she was let go. I then let him know that I was not calling to talk about why she was fired and that I was calling to talk about the bounced check. He then stated that he didn't know who my daughter was and that I would have to call back later to speak to his wife. Why would he claim to know how my daughter was fired is he later admits to now knowing who she was? Well, I call back later to talk to the other owner and left a message. She called me back and like her husband, she focused most of her attention to the way my daughter was fired and the reasons why. I had to explain to her that I don't care about why my daughter was fired, that I just want my daughter to get paid for the time she worked for her. She keeps talking about how my daughter was a sweet person and a great employee but because they were so slow they didn't need her services. Again, I had to explain to her that I was calling about the bounced check she received. She then starts laughing stating that the check has cleared. I let her know that it has not and that I have a letter from Wells Fargo Bank letting me know the check was not deposited due to insufficient funds. She still maintained that the check has cleared. I then asked her to call her bank and cancel the check and pay my daughter in cash. She refused and said the check cleared, even though my bank has already told me that the check had bounced and that I should either have the company cancel the check or take them to court. So, since I knew she wasn't going to pay my daughter I told her I was going to take her to court and write a review of her business on Yelp which already has a bad rating. She then screamed at me and said, "GO AHEAD! YOU DO THAT AND WHEN YOUR DAUGHTER NEEDS A RECOMMENDATION I WILL TELL THEM SHE WAS A BAD EMPLOYEE!" The husband and wife team at McCloud's like to lie and mistreat minors. They also like to employ minors but not train them, and then fire them without paying them the money that they earned. Again, do NOT let your friends or family work for this shady company. I'm easily able to find the supplies I need for all my pets, and they'll even special order me things not in the store, one stop shopping is so convenient and the prices are very fair. Was there today at 5:50 p.m. to return a debit purchase our daughter made. She's from out of town. Purchased food items from the 40% shelves. There is nothing posted about these items not being returnable! Upon opening one of the bags, moths flew out! So back to return both bags. Mgr was so unprofessional, Was raising his voice at my husband and me. He tried to calm the kid down. He said we couldn't return the items. I had the receipt and debit card. I'm 78 years old and he called me "honey" . So professional. He went ahead and refunded $ and told us not to return. As if we would. I looked up the Ca. laws on clearance items and it states that it must be posted clearly that the items can't be returned. No such sign. Mgr. actually threw the bags behind him and said he was doing the refund to get us out of the store! Whoever now owns this store needs to send in secret shoppers and see what is going on in his store. There is big competition from another LARGE pet shop in town. I was horrified to go into this place yesterday and find purebred standard poodle puppies, about 4 months old, in glass cages with probably very little ventilation, no food, and little water. They looked so depressed that it was heartbreaking. I don't know where they got these puppies, but with so many being products of puppy mills and with so many dogs available through rescue groups, this is unconscionable. This place is an absolute joke. The employees are rude, uneducated, and did I mention rude? The store is a mess. The poor dogs look miserable. The employees act like your a bother when you ask them questions or need to be rang up for your purchases. I HATE spending money there, but unfortunately they are the only place within a hour of my home that supplies what I need for my pets. I guess that's how they get away with being so horrible to their customers. If you can, shop somewhere else! I like supporting small ma and pa shops in our community but this place is an exception. I've stepped foot in this place MAYBE two or three times since the 20 years I've lived in Sonora, and every time has been negative from the employees. After practically being kicked out by the owner when my friend and I were about 13 looking at fish because we didn't want to buy them and they were "too busy to worry about us." Just today, I went in with my boyfriend after not have stepped foot in there since that incident, and to our surprise one of our friends had gotten a job there. We were there for the Dumbo Rats since the local PetSmart doesn't carry them. We asked him to see, and he took us back and handed us one to hold. We asked him questions about the pet, and did sneak a few "how are you" questions in there. Apparently by doing this we were "distracting him" according to the owner. I removed myself from the equation to look at fish. Later, as we were finishing up looking at the Blue Tangs and Clown Fish the owner approached us very hostile and asked if we knew the employee. We said we did. He then told us that because we "distracted him" he could "lose his job." My boyfriend tried to explain we wanted to get a rat and were asking him questions and getting a feel for the pet before buying it. He did t see to like that, and proceeded to tell us "he was on a deadline" and implying we were being a haste. We said we might return in a few days and he said "good do that." He has the poorest ownership skills and personality I've ever seen. I felt as though I was being kicked out for trying to buy something. Never ever shop here. It's the worst place ever. read more

I've lived in this area 42 years, my whole life and will say that while the store has had some bad years, the old staff appear to have all been replaced with very friendly, courteous, and up-to-date staff . I have shopped here and will continue to shop here and would recommend them to anyone w looking for a pet.IMHO Anyone who recommends purchasing fish, birds or reptiles from a Petsmart or other Big box "pet" store is no one you want to take pet advice from, that's just how it is. read more

i have dealt with company for about 30 years. I cannot believe how customers are being treated since the son took over. I bought 2 algea eaters last week and two days later one died. I called and talked to kevin I he said WE DONT GUARANTEE OUR FISH . pet smart guarantees theres for 2 weeks. I also gave mcclouds about five hundred dollars worth of tank canopies just to help make money for resale. I will leave the decision up to the public . thank you linda titus read more

This place is amazing the puppies have water bowls and it is not cruel because they are so small!! The animals are not overcrowded and they always have enough water. They have great customer service and I have bought many a pet from here and they are all still alive. The dogs have never gotten sick!!! read more

Every time I enter the store, I have been treated well by a knowledgable staff. I've been going to mcclouds for years and have always hated the bad reviews, so I've made a Yelp specifically to write this review. I've always been allowed to hold snakes even though I have never bought one here, and the enclosures have always seemed clean and adequate for short term housing. The snakes are well handled and used to people. Also, I have personally observed humidity adjustments to the enclosures, though I've never seen "big momma" (a specific snake another user mentioned). Many reviewers have suggested going to PetSmart instead. Please do not - I have only seen their snakes in 1ftx1ft enclosures and when I asked an employee if I could handle a snake, he replied "no, we just dump 'em straight from the box into there until someone buys one". Seriously?!? Personally, I almost never shop there. Support a hardworking local business instead! EDIT: so I just revisited Mccloud's for the first time in literally months, and the employees were as kind and helpful as ever. The smell by the door is strong from not great ventilation, however I can confirm that the reptile enclosures all have appropriate substrate, hides, and water for the respective reptiles. I can not stress enough how much better conditions are for reptiles here than at PetSmart. read more

I really liked the store at first, but one day I called asking if the had any rabbits, and they said the had one, and that it wasn't on hold or anything. Later I called back to ask if I could put the rabbit on hold, and they said that was fine. When I got there I said that I had the rabbit on hold. One of the workers there said that the rabbit already on hold. I was really confused until I figured out the other people had put the rabbit on hold before I did yet when I called they said it wasn't on hold. They said sense the other people called first they got the rabbit. Well that made me really upset, and now I don't know if I will shop there again soon. read more
