For some time now I have been driving by this coffee & tea shop, and today I decided to take the…read moreroad less traveled, Starkey Road, and pay this place a visit. And what I found completely amazed me, and exceeded my highest of expectations. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea, near Tanglewood Mall, in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. The Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea on Starkey Road in Roanoke, VA, is a former bank that was converted into a coffee shop by Blake Construction, a company that also handles many of their projects. This location opened in 2012, after the original downtown Roanoke store was established in 1990 by founder Dave Johnson. The Starkey Road location featured a unique renovation, including turning the old vault into a walk-in cooler and adding a drive-up window.  When I entered the Coffee Shop today, I was attracted by its magical cozy ambiance and by the fine lines and curves of its renovation architectural design. Known for its artisanal coffee blends and curated tea selections, I was also impressed with their menu, that besides freshly baked pastries, also included a nice egg variety plates for breakfast and creative sandwiches for lunch. The place offered a cozy retreat for coffee enthusiasts. College students could take advantage of their Free WiFi to research and write their reports using their laptops. Friends could meet there to spend quality time talking to each other. Entrepreneurs could use the place to brainstorm business ideas over a cup of savory coffee. Art enthusiasts could view the artists display works, and even purchase one to add to their collection. When it was my turn to make my order, I approached the counter and a bright and friendly young lady took my order. I ordered a breakfast plate with two fried eggs over easy, bacon, and white toast, with a large Mocha Coffee to drink. The cook did an excellent job cooking my food, just how I had asked it done. At the entrance there was a Community Bulletin Board with different announcements and advertisements. I happened to find one for this year's performance of the Nutcracker at the Burgland Center, which I had been wondering about when ticket sales were selling. In conclusion, I highly recommend this coffee shop, not only for its great coffee and tea, for its food menu, for its exceptional customer service, and cozy atmosphere, that together make for an extraordinary dining experience.

Their house chai wasn't interesting subtle spice mix, and was available with alternative milks. The star of the show, though was a vegan peach crumble coffee cake, which was about as good as you could possibly imagine such a thing in being. It had a moistness and texture that you would never think would come with a vegan baked good and every bite delivered a delectable flavor mix. The menu will vary, of course, but they clearly have the ability to deliver some quality items for virtually anyone seeking a breakfast or lunch.

It had been a lifelong dream of a team of three: Sadie Smith, Charlie Claus, and Ryan Patton, to open a Coffee Shop where everyone in the community is welcome to relax, chat, hang out, and do the things they enjoy doing while they drink a cup of coffee or tea with a pastry from Bread Craft. This morning I went to visit their Coffee Shop and see first hand their dream come true. It was early in the morning yet the owners were there to personaly greet me and serve me my Coffee. You could see from the sparkle in their eyes how proud they were of working hard to make their special dream materialize. And work hard they did because all the seating areas and stations were made by them and this gives the place a special character. I ordered a Cafe Latte and my friend ordered a drip. Their modern coffee machine made a wonderful coffee and they finished off by making a design on top of the coffee with the cream. Since it was very early the pastries had not yet arrived but I enjoyed talking with the owners about their new business, looking around at their creation, and enjoying the special cup of coffee they made me. I highly recommend this new Coffee House to the entire community as a place to come to wind down, be creative, meet and make new friends, and while at it enjoy a cup a coffee in a relaxed and comfortable environment where everyone is welcomed to hangout.

And Canvas & Coffee Art Café that very reasantly opened in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. I woke up one day inspired to go have breakfast in an out of the ordinary café and while searching the net just happen to find this place that just opened, located at the Grandin Commons off Grandin Road, right next to the Post Office, and off I went with the enthusiasm of the adventure of the journey and thinking what I would find there. And what I found was amazing. Housed in a beautiful restored Victorian house turned Mini-Mall, named Grandin Commons, with six other businesses, was this cozy little café with its entrance on the first floor of the house. As I entered I was impressed with the simple yet elegant decor and its beautifully restored hardwood floors. On one of the walls were three artworks from a local artist in exhibition and for sale. On the other walls were framed blank canvases representing them being open to your artistic imagination. Small square tables and chairs filled the room for customers to sit and enjoy their coffee as they get their creative juices flowing. In the following room was the Café station neatly organized with the menu on the wall and pastries from the very well known bakery Bread Craft, inside a square glass dome. Next to it were the art supplies and different size canvases with price list. Sarah, a friendly and lovely young lady greeted and welcomed me to the Café, and kindly explained how everything worked. You could purchase and size canvas and were provided with the paints. They had both oil paints and watercolor paints. I also found out that you were welcome to come just to have coffee and a pastry and watch how others painted. I explained to her that my art was Photography and that I was there to have breakfast and review the place so that others would find out about it. She loved the idea and took my order of a Mocha Coffee and a Chocolate Croissant. While she prepared my breakfast I looked around and talked with her. The idea to open this place came from her and her husband Esteban. They shared a dream to have a place where creativity, coffee, and community met. A place where people felt truly welcomed and discovered the joy of creating. "Coffee brings us together, and art gives us room to express ourselves." Very true indeed. They also plan to hold events and workshops there, as well as have a rotating exhibition of local artists on the walls of the place. Needless to say, my coffee and chocolate croissant were delicious and I got to meet a very special person with very noble ideas. I highly recommend this place and encourage the community to give them your total support.

Unfortunately, a toasted bagel with butter had the butter on the side, and thus by the time I ate my bagel it was cold and didn't butter the way I wanted it to. Their chai was a syrupy but interesting flavor that emphasized spice more than sugar; at least, the first few sips were before I clumsily dropped it. No blame for them on that. Adding a parfait to eat later was a good decision that gave me energy for the day. They had a wide menu, and while I wanted a bit more from my bagel I could certainly find a quick and easy breakfast downtown here whenever I needed it.

I arrived to have breakfast on an early morning of the most wonderful time of the year and after having won the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award a week earlier, was looking forward to reviewing this very unique Coffee Shop, Eatery, and more. First of all I was extremely impressed with the interior design of the Coffee Shop. It is by far the most beautifully designed Coffee Shop that I have evered visited. The attention to detail was evident even before one entered the place and even more after. It was evident in the design and quality materials used to create and house this Coffee Shop and more. I was very impressed with all the gift items exhibited there as well, such as cute stuffed animals, tumblers, and fine crystal items, to name a few. Second of all I was very impressed by the nice variety of coffees, other drink items, and exquisite foods, made available not only on the menu, but also inside beautiful display cases, elegantly labeled by name. And last but not least, I was extremely impressed by the extraordinary customer service provided by the young lady barista behind the counter, who was very knowledgeable about the Coffee Shop and all its available items. I ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese and a large Caffè Mocha. They both were wonderfully prepared and tasted amazingly delicious. I enjoyed them seated at the white marble counter facing the Christmas trees that decorate the Hotel during this Special time of the year.
