I needed a couple of things that could be had probably at most of the big box stores. I go to those places when I feel the need to have someone not be helpful, someone who thinks that be cause they know where hammers are or for someone to say, "I don't know ". That's not the feeling at McCabe's. Someone actually pleasantly said Good Morning. I was staring fascinated at stuff I have looked at for years, and I am just not in a hurry. And that seems to be fine with the people in the store. I got my stuff, checked out and and was satisfied. I always enjoy a hardware store. I will be back to buy paint or something. Gave them over 200 bucks for a Milwaukee impact kit only to get home and find out the batteries are completely dead and it's serial number is from 2018. They told me they couldn't return it, and that milwaukee would have to repair it, but milwaukee said they should have no problem returning it. The guy said Home Depot would have the same return policy, but when I called home depot, they said they'd replace or return it without hesitation. As much as I would love to support our small businesses, it's simply not worth the extra money, or hassle of dealing with 5-year-old inventory. read more

There is a world of difference between McCabe's service and stock supply than when it used to be Meyer Hardware. I live at the end of the street on Hetz Drive in Montgomery Towne (condos) and will go out the back way down Cornell, up Snider, and down Kemper to Home Depot. At Home Depot, get online and search for the product you need to see how many are available and what aisle the product is located in. Pre-order and park in one of the designated parking spots and let them know you are there via phone app. They will bring the purchase to your vehicle. I just purchased a new Cuisinart grille from Amazon Prime and will drive 9 minutes North on Montgomery Road to Tractor Supply Co. for propane to fill the tank I bought from Home Depot. Before retirement, I developed TSC stores and knew both store mangers and corporate execs in Tennessee. They serve small "gentlemen farmers" (less than 5 acres). I agree with John S, the associate apathy will prevent me from giving them my business. I will drive the extra miles not to be insulted but treated with respect and appreciation. I have been a customer of McCabe Hardware for years. You can imagine by the rating that I was quite surprised by my interaction on Saturday, 3/21/2020. I needed a few items, including some cleaning/sanitizing supplies and thought of McCabe Hardware since they usually have what I need. While waiting to check out, an older employee (Don) was at the cash register, along with a middle-aged man (Dave) and a youthful male employee. The elderly man was coughing & hacking continuously and remained in the checkout area. Even without the current state of the times I would have been concerned, but my awareness was even more acute given the COVID-19 directives that are in place. I was concerned for all involved; 1) For Don, because he truly should not have been working, especially among other employees and patrons, 2) For Dave and the younger employee, who were clearly too close and clearly would be contaminated by the open coughing, and 3) myself and the other patrons who were standing well away from the register and the three employees. I kept my distance and would not approach the register, which I could see seemed to frustrate the three employees. I stated that I would not approach the register until Don removed himself from the area. Rather than apologize, Dave's response was that he was coughing because "he just came in from outside." And, "if you're so concerned about it, you should have stayed at home." What? IMHO, if stores are remaining open in the face of directives from the governor that sick people should stay home, I believe I have the right to assume that working employees are healthy and not a potential risk to customers. In the middle of a heath crisis that most people have never experienced before in their lives, he should have stayed home or sought medical treatment. The names were provided by the younger employee. I will have to think twice before returning to McCabe Hardware. The store's poor judgement to allow Don to work, Don's poor decision to come to work sick, and Dave's inappropriate comment are troubling. I understand that stores are trying to mitigate their losses by staying open, but telling a patron to stay home and putting other employee and customer lives at risk is reckless. read more

If you don't want to bother driving out to a Lowe's or Home Depot and walk down aisle after aisle to find one little product, then head to the McCabe Do-It Center in Montgomery (or Delhi). It's much smaller and the prices may be a little more, but it's a very good store that specializes in paint, hardware, tools, and lumber. McCabe offers all kinds of services such as key cutting, window & screen repair, and propane refilling, and they have plenty of lumber cut to specific sizes. Although they don't advertise it, if you're taking a high school physics class you might get lucky and find someone who can help you easily build a catapult (I did). Another neat feature they have is equipment rental (concrete, construction, moving, floor care, paint, plumbing, power tools, lawn & garden) for homeowners and contractors, priced at two, four, and 24 hours rental lengths. McCabe also has a large grill department, including Ohio's largest selection of Weber grills, and Southwest Ohio's largest selection of Traeger. Also in the department are other items necessary for great grilling such as apple chips and charcoal. Nearby the grilling section are a few shelves of random items that truly show how McCabe is there to meet your home and personal needs: bug spray, basketball pumps/nets, chairs, and lanterns, among others. The Do-It Center has a wide variety of the traditional hardware store items, which if you live nearby is worth the shorter trip to grab items such as: pipe insulation, motor oil, weed/pest/rodent preventer, mailboxes and address numbers, hoses, screws, deck finish, brooms, fire starter, and lawn fences. On the left side of the store is also a wide selection of Porter Paints. McCabe may be smaller than some of its competitors, but its friendly staff, the wide range of products, and its neighborhood shop atmosphere make it a great store. Just "Do-It." read more

I have bought several grills here over the years , They have a large inventory and boast of being the best place to buy a grill. Hunting to buy a new pellet grill for my Father-in-law a week before Father's Day . The purchasing experience here wasn't the best. Got a teenager to input the purchase into their system , very obvious his first time. he had to ask a lot of questions of his manager and co-workers . Not faulting the teen but his manager and co-workers for as one reviewer puts it... extreme apathy. I was making a $1400 purchase it was like pulling teeth it was a painful experience since it was at least 6 people was standing around doing nothing. You would think one. person could do a elbow tutorial and assist the guy. I asked if I could get it delivered just a few miles up the road before Father's Day ... "Most likely not it takes weeks to get a grill deliver" was the response but told me the assist manager Andrew would be the decider. I asked that Andrew give me a call, he didn't, I called he wouldn't come to the phone but I got another young assist manager who was very nice but said pretty much you are out of luck. If they pride themselves on being a big time grill dealer have less people standing around and more people assembling and ratchet up the delivery especially before a big grill giving holiday such as Father's Day. I picked up the grill... Once again, the absolute worst customer service ever. Close and convenient it may be, but it is more hassle than it is worth. As usual, no employees were trying to help customers, because they were too busy chit-chatting with each other by the registers. When I finally did ask for help, the clerk took apart my item that I was looking for a washer and nut for, thereby making it not possible for me to figure out how it went back (this was a part for lighting equipment, so not your standard hardware store piece.) I don't know why I continue to try to shop here as every experience at this store is a bad one. Slow service. Inept service. Absolutely no level of customer service. Went back they refused to take the stuff back. Tried them again, for convenience, bought some paint. They mixed it wrong. Had to fight to get that fixed. Many other issues like these. The manager is a complete jerk and should not be in a business that deals with customers. He should be fired. Always a great experience! I have been buying from these guys for years and am never disappointed. Went in to get a mower blade sharpened on short notice, (Sunday Grass Panic) and Chad got me in and out within minutes even though he was busy. The place has a great selection of anything you could want, and the customer service has been outstanding through the years. I had to come in on Sunday to buy some paint for a project I'm working on. The prices were a little higher, but to be honest, I'd rather pay a little extra than try to fight fields-ertel traffic. The gentleman that was working with me was really helpful and gave me some ideas for finishing my project, and the nice young lady at checkout also gave me some tips. I have gone to this store for the last time. I am open-minded so I gave them a couple chances, but this store has it all. Indifferent help, high prices and they act like it is a private club and you are not in it when you enter the store. I went today and asked for a product they advertise on the radio and the help did not know where it was. Home Depot has far friendlier help and much better prices.
