Wish there was a zero stars option. Dealt with them now as an independent contractor and had to contact my tax preparer, a lawyer, and the CA labor department and IRS to try and get back money they took from my paycheck, and was told what MBO is doing is illegal in taking out a huge percentage of my paycheck PRE GROSS and calling it a business tax. What they're doing is underreporting how much people make, in order to keep a larger chunk of their money. The people do not, in fact, get that money back come tax time (like they're attempting to claim), due to the fact that there's no evidence of what the actual gross was supposed to be. They didn't fix this until my tax preparer got involved and basically told them that what they're doing is illegal. I've since been contacted by three people who had a similar experience with them. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. THEY ARE SCAMMERS. read more

If a negative star could be given, my experience with MBO Partners would more than surely deserve one. Chronological Summary: - My company provided a bid to large company for consulting services - Large company accepted bid, but required engagement with MBO - MBO contacts us to schedule a vetting process and mandatory orientation. Their email assumes that I will be the resource working on a contract assignment with large company. - At this point, we have not decided whether to engage with MBO, or what MBO's services, fee structure, and contractual agreement entail. - We write an email to clarify: 1. That the resource working on assignment is not me, but an employee of the company. 2. That the individual is a W-2 and that we have payroll and accounting, as well as our own EIN and L&I account at the Federal and State level. - We ask for: 1. Information regarding the services that MBO would provide to our company. 2. Fee arrangement 3. Whether MBO requires a Master Agreement as part of the engagement and if so, whether they could furnish a copy. - We receive a response containing: 1. That the employee would remain our W-2 employee. 2. That their fee is 4.1%. Yes, let's keep in mind that this our employee for whom we must provide equipment, space, necessary training, and we also have to pay taxes by virtue of being her employer. 3. No mention of what MBO services include. 4. And the highlight of this email, a PDF file of an actual agreement executed between MBO and one of their clients, yes you read correct, a PDF of the actual contract. This contract contained in addition to the client's personal name and business name, address, and type of entity, the business' TIN number. Yes, that would be the business' social security number, which depending on how the business is registered with IRS could be a number assigned to it, or the owner's social security number. - We respond as soon as we see this email: 1. To let them know that what they sent was a PDF of the actual contract b/t them and another party. That it contained personal/confidential information. 2. To confirm that we scheduled a phone call with them Following research, our company decides to not engage with MBO, for various reasons which you can deduct from this review. And I am not even mentioning their contract here, because there would just be much to mention. I have a law degree (J.D.), by the way, that's one of the reasons why I am the person who reviews and signs contracts on behalf of the company. - We send an email to inform of our decision to not engage with MBO. 1. We receive an email response to the effect that speaking with MBO is "mandatory" and that MBO would still call me. 2. No mention or acknowledgement regarding my message about the contract they sent me, although they are responding to the message so it stands to reason that they read it or at least received it. Horrified. EDIT 6/29/12 This company is a train wreck. They have kept contacting us with the following points: 1. Implying that the plethora of negative reviews I have seen all over the web are not "real" reviews. 2. When I asked to be provided the Master Agreement that I would be asked to sign as part of the engagement with the particular large company, they did not send me anything instead their VP of Marketing told us that a phone call would be necessary for them to know what to send us, because many of the negative reviews stem from ICs and small service providers being enrolled in the wrong programs. Who enrolls businesses in the wrong programs you might ask? I guess that would be MBO. read more

(ONLY GAVE A STAR BECAUSE I HAD TO) MBO is TERRIBLE, I can not, by the life of me understand why a huge corporation would ever use a company like this. Since, I am a temporary employee my payroll is outsourced through MBO (sure wish it wasn't). The first red flag was them asking me to get my I-9 form notarized but did not need to be stamped by the notary...(blank stare). I have never had to do this in California. My first check came...on Saturday when I am to be paid on Friday. The next week my check never came. I believed it was never mailed. It has been a nightmare ever since. I have never had an issue with an outsourced payroll company. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Independent and Major Corps...NEVER hire this company. It might cost you legal obligation later, especially if they wont pay on time. read more

It'a a pain to be a contractor / consultant - getting worse and worse - and if you're not incorporated and don't want to deal with all the tax/financial stuff - MBO Partners is a totally reasonable way to go. Yeah - there's paperwork - yeah there's a lag from when you first start a new gig billing through them - BUT once all the bureaucratic stuff gets rolling - it's fine. I've taken out my frustration and vented at them plenty of times - but it's not them - it's the companies that use vendors who won't pay you on a W2 and make you work CTC. I usually work on a W2 - but have used them off and on for over 15 years (maybe longer - since way back when they were based in NJ) when a company will only pay me a decent rate - or will only hire me for a project on a 1099. It's better than being incorporated (for me). The UI is good - nice dashboards, etc. read more

Update: A client services manager reached out and has gone out of her way to work to resolve my issues. Does MBO still have problems? Yes. But I'm happy to know they have teams working hard every day to improve the contractor experience. ----------------- Terrible. I work in multiple states and properly document my time spent working across states. MBO took out payroll taxes only for the state where I worked the most (e.g. 30 hours in State A and 10 hours in state B = 40 hours of payroll computed in state A). They are not transparent about this. When asked how to correct it they suggested I talk to a tax accountant for advice! Meanwhile they are taking 5% of my net earnings and even charge $50 to do payroll! Also, if you already have a 401k set up for your company, you cannot contribute to it pre-tax as MBO won't allow it (unless it is an E-trade account). My complaints go on and on. I dread tax season next year. read more

MBO strips your company of its RIGHT to make direct payments. Instead of writing your corporation a check like a traditional C2C arrangement, MBO requires approval for every single financial transaction. Their business model is highly flawed and puts a great deal of financial burden on small business owners. You will have to pay each corporate bill and expense (like an office lease) with YOUR OWN PERSONAL MONEY and then they police each transaction (even a cup of coffee) to see if it meets their 'requirements'. To make matters work, their policing is only done once a week. So if your expense misses their cutoff you will have to wait even longer to access YOUR money. Say your client pays you on a Thursday, but the MBO cutoff is Wednesday, you won't be paid until the following Friday. Meanwhile your corporate funds are being held somewhere ambiguous (they don't provide any information about what bank account your funds are being held in). Also want to point out that MBO sits on your company cash without paying interest. MBO will only distribute company funds as an expense or payroll and even then, they'll pay it to YOU, NOT YOUR CORPORATION. Despite making thousands of dollars, not a single penny was ever deposited in my corporate checking account. READ THAT AGAIN - not a single penny my corporation earned in 2016 was ever given to my company! I'm not sure how all this is even legal. As you can imagine, filing taxes is an audit nightmare. MBO inserts themselves and you as a bill payer as two unnecessary middlemen in running your small business. You will have to unwind the fake MBO system and make it reconcile with the real IRS world as you sift through your personal expenses, MBO expense reimbursements and payments you made out of their sight. They sell their corporate clients on being in compliance which is a hilarious sham. MBO has absolutely nothing to do with how a corporation files its taxes. So even if a small business is jumping through all the asinine MBO hoops, what does it matter if MBO has no control over how businesses are filing taxes with the IRS? They expect you to use their ledger - lol! I use my own (where my accountant is the decision maker NOT MBO) and by the way, it looks nothing like theirs. None of the 'services' they provide constitute a 5% fee. MBO takes a hefty cut to justify doing work that no corporation benefits from them doing. Quite the opposite, I've had to put in hundreds of hours to undo and work around their inefficient system. Also note, online payroll services cost $50 a month. I advise corporate clients, small business and individuals alike to AVOID MBO! read more

So MBO are between me and my client, and interestingly, THEY decide on the level of insurance I need to meet my client's requirements. When I first heard of them from my client and looked them up and saw earlier reviews, I asked them about them and they were oblivious. "What bad reviews? Where?" despite seeing that they'd responded directly to those same reviews in this same forum... As an LLC they determined I needed all kinds of insurance, even though I don't work on financial systems, have no access to internal systems at all, and I am my role is advising on a potential new program--from home, using all of my own equipment, etc, with very little travel involved. As a small business, MBO determined I need a whole slew of insurance to do this work--including auto insurance, despite NOT OWNING A CAR. When pushed on this point, they didn't relent. Coincidentally, MBO also offers these same insurance coverage policies for a fee. Their services are also "easier and faster" than getting my own insurance. In other words, the people who decide "you must have a helmet to go on this ride" just happen to sell helmets, and if you want to go on this ride anytime soon, you'll just buy a helmet from us...and when I questioned this they keep referencing decisions by "the director of VAST" like I know who the hell that is. Responding to a query with internal jargon is not helpful--usually that's obvious? I do wonder if ANYONE does business through MBO and they ever determine that one doesn't need either insurance or to work through MBO for a fee? I get the feeling everyone falls into those two categories...and they go out of their way to detail how difficult and long it will be to get your own, so hey, why not just pay them, right? Or bill it to the client, but either way, pay them. My first phone call with them was scheduled through their appt. system and I received the information and contact details for some other client instead--not an MBO person, contact details for a different individual. When I pointed this out, they also out-of-the-blue rescheduled my appt. It got easier to deal with them, but I never did understand all of the requirements or timelines or processes. I keep getting emails addressed to other clients, which is worrisome when you consider privacy, but they just apologize like it's no big deal. Right now each time I log-in I see a form telling me to sign on to a change in my retirement plan--you must sign, sign later, or decline to proceed to the time-keeping system, but if you decline, it just pops up next time-- except I don't have a retirement plan through MBO.... When I let them know they just gave me the now-standard "You've simply received a system-generated notification by accident" and that's probably true but how often is my information being sent to others, and how busted is this system that it sends me the wrong messages or messages for others every few weeks? And why is this no big deal? All this insurance stuff but they can't run a simple management system? Their corporate clients are OK with this? This is middleman-ism, and while it undoubtedly works for some, it is not focused on the contractors, just on their client-side. Or at least I assume they treat the other side better. Look, it's OK, but that's it, and the truth is, many of us don't have a choice given the alternatives--the problem is I get the impression that MBO knows that, so that's the level of service you get. Our company has been forced to use MBO for the past 2 years because this is the only way our end client will do business. To date, we have received no benefit from MBO, yet we have to pay the 3-5% fees they charge to use their "service". Our payment terms with the end client is 30 days. However, we never receive payment in less than about 52 days. First, once you send your invoice, the end client has a week to approve it, so your 30 day clock doesn't even start until its approved. Next, there is no enforcement of the 30 days. Quote from MBO: "XYZ Company's net terms to send payment is 30 days, but we typically receive payment from them at 45 days." Ok, so why isn't MBO doing something about this? Isn't this the "service" the vendor is supposed to receive? Why am I paying 3-5% of my hard earned money to MBO if they aren't going to make sure the client makes the payment when it's due? And then finally, once MBO gets the payment from the end client, it is another full week before you, the vendor, receive your payment. So you are looking at between 52 and 60 days on a 30 day payment term agreement. If MBO wanted to provide a service, they would take on the responsibility of making the payment to the vendor themselves 30 days after the end client approves the invoice. Then if they want to wait another 3 weeks to get reimbursed by the end client, so be it. That delay shouldn't be forced onto the vendor. We have people to pay too, and they can't wait 60 days. read more

EDIT: I just had a 20 minute phone call with one of MBO's SVPs as a direct result of the following review, and it was very pleasant. He expressed a sincere desire to learn what went wrong with how my project was handled, and said they would be investigating and learning from it. Honestly a lot of the fault lies with my original client, too. I should have made that more clear in my review. This was not solely MBO's fault, though they certainly made things quite frustrating as well. The SVP told me he would be discussing the project with the (very large) client as well to prevent future contractors from having to go through what I did. I'm bumping my star grade up one to account for this unexpected customer service, but I've decided to leave the original review just for clarity. ORIGINAL REVIEW MBO is one of the most unnecessary, convoluted middlemen I've ever encountered. I am a professional voiceactor, and work with many production companies and media manufacturers to provide narrations and overdubs for news reads, promo videos, etc. My clients usually have no trouble receiving their files from me, and mailing a check to my business. I then handle my own taxes. Well, enter MBO. After being informed (after a month of follow-ups with my client) that they couldn't just simply mail me a check, I was forced to register with MBO. MBO informed me that since I didn't have $1,000,000 of commercial and professional liability insurance for my one-man home-operated LLC (a policy that costs hundreds of dollars per year and is completely unnecessary for my business), that I couldn't be registered as a vendor for my client. Not being a vendor means that they suddenly get authorized to levee their taxes and fees, rather than letting me file my own taxes like every other client I work with. So now my simple $200 fee for a quick 2 minute video narration is $155, and they are telling me that to even get that, I need to have something notarized (an extra fee), fill out pages of forms, and potentially even get a background check. I just want my (expletive) check. What an absolute disaster. If you are a company considering partnering with MBO, DON'T DO IT. If you're a vendor considering working with a company that uses MBO, DON'T DO IT. I'm about this close to just letting them keep the audio file for free, because this has been an immense headache and a disappointment from the absolute beginning. read more

I've been an associate with MBO Partners off and on since May 2006. This company has always projected a professional image to my clients and allowed me to do the work expected, in the quickest time. It allows me to enjoy the freedom of being a freelance consultant without worrying about the accounting. I tried incorporating as a business and filing taxes. Forget it. It doesn't make sense when MBO's infrastructure and accountants allow me to focus on what's important to my future, my clients. And I get to focus on what's important to me, my family, which happen to be in all parts of this country. Recently MBO Access was created. It's an on-line community created and designed to make it easier for MBO Associates and Client organizations to learn more about one another and the growing world of Independent Consulting. It's an added service to a very diverse and scattered clientele. And when I'm between contracts, I never have a problem collecting unemployment, or cashing in, or borrowing from the 401k they created for me and contribute to. read more

Update I think it is fair to post an update to the semi-rant posted previously. Having completed the on-boarding process and having some additional experience with the process, below are some additional thoughts. * On-boarding was straightforward. Other than getting the drug test, which required getting in the car, everything was pretty much attaching documents I already had to a web form. The process was clear and simple. Unlike getting a home loan, they didn't come up with new or changed requirements partway through. * As far as customer service, whenever I've had a question or problem they have been very responsive and solved it quickly. They have an appointed contact person who, at least in my case, does an excellent job. * Starting up a new project is WAY easier than under the old PO system. So, that is a huge plus. * "Unnecessary middle man" is still kind of true from my perspective. But not from the client company's perspective. They handle administration of the contracts (which, apparently the client wasn't doing before -- they had never asked for insurance certificates for example. I still think the client should be footing the bill for that service, however. I used to have an arrangement to collect on approved invoices within a week or so for a 3% discount. Now I have to pay the 3% but wait 40 days for the payment. Not an unheard of payable cycle but it a net change for the worse for my company. * I had hoped that getting our company in a list available across the client company would actually help us get additional work. I was told that is a future capability but the system doesn't really work that way now...as I understand it, clients have to go looking for my company specifically. This would have been a value-add for me. Bottom-line: I think large companies are going this way to off-load the administration of lot's of small contracts. MBO does a fine job at this function and, once on-board, things seem to be working fine. read more

MBO Partners shafts employees on insurance coverage. They claim to have 4 policies for employees and they must be nationwide, but only offer 1. Worst yet, they send out one set of forms to continue coverage, but then tell you they did something else. Even with health care coverage costs skyrocketing, they should not send out one thing and then change it without telling you they changed it. read more

MBO is spectacularly unsuited to work with consultants, researchers, and independent service providers. MBO knows that consultants and many others don't fit its processes but does not apply any intelligent discretion nor does it cede the 5% fee it levies on consultant billings to its clients. As a result MBO causes a tremendous amount of thoroughly unnecessary work and expense for both the clients and consultants that they supposedly serve. Don't just take my word for it - read the company's responses to other reviews below - MBO seems to put the onus on the consultant to initiate conversations with MBO to understand their processes (and shamelessly further waste the consultant's valuable time) rather than the other way around as it should be. I run my own 2 person S-Corp consultancy writing research reports and typically only interact with clients over the phone. In some cases, I would describe my services as more of a product rather than hourly labor. I directly bill my clients for the reports and receive payment via check or ACH to my business bank account. The process takes me 2-5 minutes on my side and likely the same amount of time on the client side. My EIN is on the invoice so there is absolutely no doubt about compliance. With MBO it has taken me more than 20 hours to date (and I still haven't been paid as of day 45 after delivering the report) to gather a laundry list of unnecessary and private documents, go through the process of getting insurance quotes BUT not actually being required to purchase insurance (I wonder what the brokers think of that process), get enrolled in their system, drug tested (with no reimbursement for parking, gas, and time spent getting tested), submit invoices for both my fees and calculate/add MBO's 5% fees on my billings in Fieldglass, follow up on the status of the unpaid invoice which they blame on yet another third party (not the client) with whom I've never interacted with. I'd estimate that my clients have spent more than 7 hours corresponding with me and MBO just trying to navigate the process - unsuccessfully I might add to date. I advise any small consultancy as well as clients to avoid working with MBO based on my experiences with this utterly useless provider of Byzantine processes and myriad excuses for the failure of those processes that has the gall to charade about under the pretense of providing "the support and white-glove service befitting a true independent professional." To date, there hasn't been a single MBO employee that can describe to me what this support and white-glove service is or what they are providing me for a 5% ride on my fees. Nor could I find anyone at MBO that could describe what service they were providing the client in my situation. I could potentially understand a one time vetting, background check, drug screen (if appropriate) fee but an ongoing 5% fee in perpetuity for being an unnecessary and mismanaged invoice middleman is flagrantly excessive. UPDATE: After numerous phone calls and emails to various MBO 'Business Managers' and 'Talent Managers', MBO quickly rectified the situation and wired the funds to my business account. MBO also did not take a fee in response to my demand for compensation for my time which I did appreciate but it was hardly commensurate. I've contemplated bumping my review up to two stars for the quick resolution and fee drop but have decided against it. In this case MBO wasted 20 hours of my time, an estimated 7 hours of my clients time, and provided no tangible or demonstrable value to either myself or the client. I see in other reviews below this seems to be a recurring theme with MBO that they claimed that they were working on over a year ago but I saw no evidence of an improvement. At the very least they could advise their clients of situations where it does not make sense for their 'services'. UPDATE 2: MBO's response to my review is indicative of everything wrong with this company and their lack of understanding of what they are providing the client. I am not an independent contractor but rather an employee of an S-Corp. MBO employees advised me that I raise my fees to cover the time required to comply to MBO's ridiculous requirements and further burden my client with needless administrative work. I try to keep my overhead as low as possible so as to deliver my products at a good value to clients. If I raised my fees to cover my time, I would, based on the 5% surcharge that MBO makes me add into my fees, be also increasing the revenue that MBO received. The optics on MBO's system are warped so as to make the consultant rather than MBO appear to be nickel and diming the client. I doubt this weak subterfuge will endure much longer as it becomes more transparent. Currently MBO has no incentive to reduce the inefficiencies of the process as they are likely to make more on any consultant that actually bills the client for the time spent following their processes. read more
