This was our third time dining at the Framingham location. We have lived in the area long enough to see three restaurants come and go from this spot. Even though the space housed other ethnic restaurants since then, the decor and interior feel reminiscent of the old Iguana Cantina. The servers are friendly and quick to help. A bottomless basket of complimentary warm chips are thick and tasty and served with a plate of refried beans as well as a bowl of sneakily spicy salsa. I ordered the Loco Burrito on this visit and was pleased with the flavor of the carne asada beef diced up inside. This burrito was stuffed with meat, black beans, and rice and was topped with a sprinkling of cotija. I usually love a super cheesy burrito but this felt lighter on a hot summer day. After downing lots of chips and a delicious fountain Diet Coke (IYKYK), I only had room for half of my burrito. My teenage son happily finished the rest for me the next day. We stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday and were surprised to find the restaurant so empty. Service was prompt, and I started with their Michelada Mazatlan, a not-too-spicy tomato base w/ your choice of beer. I opted for a Corona, and the drink, with its tajin covered rim and trio of seasoned shrimp, was a refreshing start to the meal. The Chile Verde, served with either corn or flour tortillas, is a plentiful portion...easily enough to make 3 tacos. The pork was salty, tender, and flavorful, and the creamy beans were a nice complement. My family also enjoyed the Carne Asada and large Loco Burrito. Just moved here from Texas so we were craving some tex/mex. It was nice to walk into a restaurant that felt mexican and not just pretending to be "authentic" mexican. Small and quaint but felt good. We ordered a ground beef chimichanga and a combo plate with ground beef tostado, ground beef enchilada with melted cheese and a chicken burrito. Chimichanga was crisp and flavorful, tostado was simple but good. To be honest if the meat was the same in the enchilada and burrito I would not have any idea which was which. Rice was typical tex/mex, unfortunately the refried beans were closer to soup than bean 0 texture. Table salsa was pleasant. Wait staff was very friendly. "Help I'm full!" were my wife's words about 30 min after finishing our dinner. The portions (white burrito for her, birria tacos for me) were generous. My sides (refried beans and Spanish rice) were really good, maybe better than the tacos which were good but consume dip held it back as it was a little mild. After living in LA for a decade and moving back to the east coast, we've missed the Mexican cuisine in a big way. We've been going here for a few years now and it seems that the prices have increased yet the quality and amount of meat has significantly decreased. We don't go as much because of the decreased quality of food. For example, you used to get 5 shrimp, now you're lucky if you get 3. Most salads are mostly lettuce with some protein. Had high hopes for Mazatlan. Came here specifically to try their Seafood Molcajete. Hadn't had it in a few months since I left the desert known as Las Vegas. It seems kind of strange that a place in the middle of a desert would be compared to a restaurant within 50 miles of the ocean, but stranger things have been the case. In my Las Vegas experience a boiling Molcajete was brought to the table with a robust collection of several different kinds of shrimp, mussels, crab legs, giant prawns and octopus. Now being in the desert everything had to be trucked or flown in. Now cut back to Mazatlan with its Molchajete wrapped in foil, not boiling and I kept thinking the seafood reminded me of canned seafood. The Pulpo had tasted like from a can and what was that with the foil and minimal sauce supposed to achieve? Easy cleaning? I will never return to Mazatlan in Massachusetts as there are zero excuses for what we were served so close to the ocean, btw, the Mazatlan cost was higher than in the desert as well. One last point, we had fried calamari as an appetizer and each ring was perfectly coated and identical, I would also bet that came out of a package although I can't say for sure. The experience was not worth visiting again and really guys, you are near the ocean, present better seafood to your customers. read more

Do not come to this restaurant. Me and my father ordered the chicken al pastor tacos and a chimichanga and have been sick for the past two days since eating it. The food was bland and needed salt and other seasonings. The salsa was just tomato paste. The deep fried ice cream was just ice cream which was strangely un-fried despite the description, and was very soggy. Located on Route 9 Eastbound just before the Mass Pike Entrance, Mazatlan Mexican Family Restaurant is a casual Mexican restaurant and bar serving up a good variety of the standard and specialty Mexican dishes appetizers & desserts, and a full bar menu. I did not see lunch specials here, but they have combo plates and entrees fairly priced. Upon entering, they have a lounge to the left and dining room to the right. There is minimal decor and Mexican music plays over the speakers. I stopped in here around 1 pm and the place was not very busy. I was seated in the dining room and I could sit at a table or booth. Complementary chips, mild red salsa, and a refried bean dip with pico de Gallo and cotja cheese was brought out as I looked at the menu. The server took my drink order and I quickly decided on the Seafood Chimichanga ($14.99 plus tax) which a big very hot plate came out in 8 minutes after ordering. The portion of food was very generous which had a deep fried soft chimichanga stuffed with a seafood mix of crab stock, scallops, fish, shrimp, and vegetables and topped with green tomatillo sauce and jack cheese served lettuce, tomato, sour cream, avocado slices, white rice with peas & corn and very soupy refried beans and cheese. I was semi hungry coming in and I barely could finish this big plate of food, so I requested a to go box and no more chips. I had to decline the dessert offer from my friendly server. The check was $16.19 with tax and before tip. Overall, this Mexican place was great which offers tasty food, generous portions and quick service and reasonable pricing! My mom and I stopped in for a quick bite as we made the drive back to Boston from Hartford. We'd been hoping to see the annual Lessons and Carols performance that my College hosts in December, but uncertain weather conditions necessitated we head back early. This restaurant was most definitely a bright spot during our trip back! The staff was incredibly friendly as well as knowledgeable about all menu items. They're still a new restaurant (open for about a month now), but you could tell how much care went into their service, decor, menu design, and food. Before we even ordered our mains, our server brought out homemade chips, salsa, and a refried bean dip topped with cheese and tomatoes. Everything was delicious and an indication for our mains that followed. My mom ordered the Carne Asada based on a recommendation from our server, and I ordered the fish tacos. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and the fresh ingredients and careful preparation shone as the stars of the show. The service was great, too, and our server and the server he was training made sure to check in periodically but not in an overbearing way. First trip here as they just opened. Been looking for a decent Mexican place in the area for more than a decade since Acapulcos, formerly on the same spot, closed. The skinny margaritas were perfect, the ceviche was to die for (not even sure it's on the menu but some was offered), and Enrique (the bartender) was exceptionally accommodating and provided prompt and friendly service. Move forward 6 months, my sister passed and we decided to have her celebration of life luncheon there, she really loved this restaurant. I contacted Roberto and we had a few conversations, he recommended we serve the fajitas buffet style for a group of 50 ppl. There was plenty of food for everyone, and it was delicious. The complimentary homemade salsa and refried bean dip with chips were fantastic. I asked for a skinny margarita with 1/2 the usual amount alcohol because I rarely drink anymore but wanted a margarita. It tasted 100% authentic and not 'skinny' or watered down. The white chicken chimichanga was stuffed with chicken- I couldn't finish it. It usually comes with refried beans but I skipped them this time. Under $25 before tip. They got the lighting better as well and not as bright as it was when first opened. The mariachi band is a pretty cool thing to see as well.
