    Phil's Demo
    Dean W.

My group and I had an AMAZING time last Friday at Mayu Silk Art !!! I have to admit, when I first saw an art workshop on my team's agenda for Friday morning, I wasn't exactly the most enthusiastic. All that changed when I first set foot into the roomy warehouse, near the outskirts of Huntington Beach. I was warmly greeted by Star - one of the co-owners of this shop, along with her husband, Phil. They, along with Linda - played great hosts to my team as we dazzled and discovered our hidden artistic abilities (none that's really needed for this) the morning away. While there are a number of beautiful patterns of scarves that line the wall here - Star and Phil are upfront and cast away any self-doubt you might have about needing any bit of artistic talent. You don't actually need to be an artist yourself - as all three hosts PATIENTLY guide you through creating your very own water-marbled silk art. Phil's whimsically thorough demo started us off - and off we went! Star - ever so patient - guided me with her friendly expertise - as I initially wanted my scarf to look like one of the scarves on display - but then quickly changed my mind once the paint colors settled in - and I went for something more reflective of my mood. The end result was breathtakingly awesome. It really is wonderful to see from start to finish - how you can make your own silk art in this studio. My teammates were equally thrilled and marveled by their own creations. While my group had a private time for our workshop time - Star mentioned that they are happy to accommodate smaller groups to larger events - just call ahead to inquire. They've also setup at corporate events, Universities, traveled across the states (they've been featured in many different news programs). Pricing starts around $43, depending on the length/quality of your "canvas". Parking is relatively easy - especially since we came on a Friday morning - plenty of spots upfront and in the back. Overall, I had a wonderful time - totally appreciate Star's patience as she guided me through the creation of my very own, water-marbled silk scarf.

My family, and I went for my relatives birthday . We had a great time, they are such a vibe, genuinely good people. Everything was explained concisely with a bit of humor in my case. I was late to the demonstration and went first I was nervous but all turned our well.

This was such a fun experience! We had a group of friends do this and we had the space to ourselves with the instructors of course! They were very helpful and explained everything we needed to know. I didn't think mine would come out very good but it came out beautifully! I went in wanting one design and came out with a complete opposite of what I had imagined. By doing your own group you are allowed to bring in food and drinks as well! We never at any point felt rushed or pressured to work faster. The paint colors and ideas are so broad you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. The price per scarf was only $49 which isn't bad for the experience and fun you'll have making and designing it yourself!

I was signed up for the Silk Scarf Water Marbling class by Renaissance Club and I had so much fun. There were 7 of us signed up at the same time but only three water stations so initially I was wondering if we were going to be there all day, but really once you get going it's pretty fast for each person, approximately 20 min max because you don't want the paint to dry too much before adding the silk. It is amazing watching everyone's creativity come to life and how many different ideas everyone has. What I must say for anyone who will do this, Trust the Process. I am not artistic but I knew which colors I wanted to work with and I knew I wanted my scarf to be darker with a black background not a white background. Halfway through I could not even in my mind's eye foresee how it would look and I thought it wasn't going to come out pretty. I really wanted the hearts trail that you can see in my photo, but while I was creating them I thought I had messed up big time with the colors and the size. But in the end, look how beautiful it came out! The staff guide you through every step of the process from beginning to end so you really can't mess up, but they let you choose everything along the way. There were people of all ages including children there from a different group creating scarves and it was just beautiful to watch everyone. What is really one of the best things is that the owners truly LOVE the trade, Phil is just gushing about the history of how they opened Mayu Silk and how many events they have hosted. I also loved that at the end we were given instructions to take home with us so we won't forget the after care of our scarf to help seal in the ink to prevent fading. I truly enjoyed this class and would love to come back and make another scarf again in the future!

Went to visit Cali and wanted to experience something different. We had an amazing time. The instructors were very patient, polite, and provided a 10/10 experience. We were able to create something amazing to take home.

As seen on TV: La Unscripted and Kcal news. Mayu Silk Art is a gem nestled in a commercial building area. From the outside, you would never know what magic lies within. Phil and Star are amazing. Mayu silk has been in buisness exactly 10 years to the day when we visited. We came here for a friend and artists birthday. I really Enjoyed learning from Star and Phil all the techniques and options of what possible things could be made. Our crew ended up creating beautiful unique designs. Each one of us designed amazing silk scarves, and interestingly we had our colors similar in common. Honestly, i thought mine would suck because I don't consider myself artistic. I have given myself grace, and realized i am creative and can create beauty if I allow myself the space to ignore the negative self talk and just go with the flow. Thank you Star for giving me the space and patience to guide me in creating my pattern/ design. Tonight was memorable and very healing after the recent events that I have been dealing with personally. Thank you! I am coming back for my bday and this time, making a sarong. 10/10 highly recommend! Tip: yelp check in spend $100 and you get a choice of a free scarf, handkerchief, etc. Tip 2: call ahead and make an appt. Tip 3: Mayu Silk Art has a reputation for doing many corporate events notably at the Ritz Carlton, Monarch Beach Hotel, and private events hosting to international clients who travel from all over the world to learn the techniques to create amazing art. Whether you are solo, a group of 3, or larger corporate event; everyone should experience this at least once! You will thank me later!

What an awesome experience. Star and Phillip are amazing to work with and ask you through the process. Once you let go and have fun, your scarf turns out amazing! So many colors to choose from and a billion ways for you to make yourself a unique scarf! It was the perfect place for a birthday celebration. Such a fun time!! Definitely planning to do it again!

I have been here twice in a week! My friend and I came here on Saturday and made beautiful scarves! I loved it so much I came back with my Sister, Aunt and Mom, the second time didn't disappoint! Star, Rita and Phil, were amazing! They explained everything, and made us feel like family! If you are reading this...do yourself a favor, and book it you won't be sorry! We are already talking about when we will go back!

Never expected to have this so much fun! It's out 1st doing this kind of activity. We had a great experience on Vday weekend. Star and the other staff was so helpful and made our experience soooo memorable. They brought out my husband's "wild child" within him and he loved it! LMAO. Definitely will highly recommend! Its affordable too (of course, it depends what you plan to do). Heads up, make sure wear something that can get dirty just incase.

The service was spectacular! You have so much freedom and reign. They even tell you got to throw out any ideas you may bring with by you and just create! Really worth every penny. This experience is something you can have for a lifetime! The instructors were very funny, sweet and helpful. The selection is great considering they even give you handpicked items to put your design on ( not sure if it's a secret) at the very end.

Came here for a private session on Valentine's Day with Star and Phil, and even though we arrived late to our appointment, they were still very nice and accommodating with their time even though we were their last session of the day. They took the time to explain their backstory and where the art comes from, and when the hands-on fun started, they were good at explaining all techniques and provided great encouragement even though we had no idea what we were doing, seeing as it was our first time doing this. Overall we had lots of fun making numerous scarves and experimenting with multiple techniques, colors and patterns. It was wonderful exploring the craft with Star and Phil as we were guided by their mastered artistry, which guaranteed our satisfaction with the scarves we made and brought home. I absolutely recommend taking a session here even if it's a group session! It really was exciting and therapeutic even if you think you're not artistic. It's nearly impossible to not be satisfied with your end results. Thank you Star and Phil!

I put a lot of time, money and creativity into the remodel, and therefore I was very particular about who I wanted to work with me on it. I hired Carole to paint back in the details on a vintage, Asian TV cabinet, that I turned into a bathroom vanity. Needless to say this wasn't an easy job. The vanity was initially orange and black, however, I had it painted a light turquoise color. When this was done, it completely concealed all of the intricate detail work underneath it. My former faux painter tried to come in and repaint all of the details back in, however, wasn't able to. The vanity has raised figures on the doors, which take a very delicate touch to get just right. There's also intricate gold fretwork around the doors as well as on the sides. When Carole came in, we sat down together, and discussed how I wanted it to look. We went over colors, different shades of gold, the overall feel of it, etc. She painted in not only on the raised figures but also elaborate artwork on the doors as well. Luckily, I had taken pictures of the cabinet prior to having it painted, so she was able to reference the previous artwork, and not just duplicate it, but make it 100 times better! It turned out to be a masterpiece! It is one of the star attractions of the remodel. Everyone who sees the bathroom is absolutely starstruck at how unique it and beautiful it is, and Carole's expert hand was an integral part of why that is. I can't recommend her enough and if you're lucky enough to have her to work in your home, you'll feel the same way. Her skills are easily on par with those of the old world masters. I hope to work with her again in the future, as I have a couple of projects in mind that I would like her to bring to life. Thanks again, Carole. You were a joy to work with.

I needed to find a wood carver and museum quality restoration expert having recently locally purchased my "Rosebud" quest for 50 years: a large 19th century, German, coin operated, mechanical music box in a 130 year old walnut cabinet sitting on a matching disc storage cabinet. The music box cabinet had some issues- some side panel and door warpage so that the door did not come close to closing, overall dull finish compared to the storage cabinet, missing the top pediment, bubbled veneer, trim molding glued on badly in earlier repair, cracked trim, large cracks in the back soundboard and the top soundboard (negatively effecting the sound), a missing dovetailed walnut coin drawer with lock, and a missing dovetailed, intricately fitting and scalloped walnut and glass dust cover for the motor. My plan was to have the music box cabinet "machine out" restored, while the motor was being cleaned and lubed by another craftsman. Boris gave me an extremely fair and reasonable estimate for all the "lost art specialty" work to be done. While he is a warm, friendly and humble man, he exudes confidence and ultra "having his act together". You'll know you've come to the right place, the moment you enter his organized shop and see the magnificent, one of a kind wood carved creations he has made for 40 years, since he apprenticed in the "Old Country" before moving to America 30 years ago. There is nothing he can't do with wood, and his precise measurements and engineering. And he has binders of photos of his creations that establish his creds. His work ethic is like you don't find here anymore- 6 days a week and about 10 hours a day. And he will be finished in the time he tells you, or even sooner in my case. I couldn't believe how fast, considering the amount of work. My job, was a relative walk in the park for Boris, more in line with furniture restoration, although the job he did on fabricating the dove-tailed walnut coin drawer and scalloped, wood and glass dust cover- exactly mimicking the originals I found in reference pictures, and carving for the top pediment, could not be done by an ordinary "furniture repair/ refinisher". Also, the door was severely warped and would not close. Boris made magical adjustments so that it closes perfectly and installed period mortise locks exactly centered and carved, that look like originals. That's the difference between a museum quality restorer (what Boris did in his native country) and a refinisher/repairer. He restores and keeps everything original that he can, not just slapping on stain and spraying lacquer. I'll let these project pictures speak for themselves. If you're a straight shooter, honest person, looking for a wood carving artisan and a fine human being as well, and you're not looking to cheat a craftsman, and you just want to get a project done beautifully for the price you agree to pay, go see Boris. If you're a jerk or trying to cheat an artist and good man--- please go somewhere else.

He asked my uncle, an artist (Craig Pursley, check him out), to find someone who could create a custom headboard and my uncle found Boris via Google search and his website. I picked up my grandfather and drove him to Boris' shop. As we walked in, we saw amazing carvings, from delicate landscapes to giant tables. The back room was the workshop and there was a large tree trunk awaiting Boris' attention. We explained the idea and immediately Boris started sketching a few thoughts. He explained different options for materials, color, and design, all very patiently (neither my grandfather nor I are artsy). My grandfather was very impressed by his knowledge and expertise. He's an 89-year-old Italian so respect isn't something he offers easily. Boris sent me the fully-sketched design later that evening. We discussed the font for the text a bit and he was very open to suggestions. A few weeks later, I picked up the board. It was amazing! Boris chose the most beautiful piece of walnut, with graining and flow that highlights the curve of the board. The lettering and gold highlights were perfect. The horse silhouettes were perfect. Boris ensured so many thoughtful touches. The steps and pedestals below the silhouettes, the balance of the sizes of the letters, the small notches to highlight the end of the boards... it's a fantastic creation. Boris is truly, truly a master craftsman and master woodcarver. I will definitely go to him again if I ever need something, or perhaps if I want to simply treat myself with something beautiful.
