My group and I had an AMAZING time last Friday at Mayu Silk Art !!! I have to admit, when I first saw an art workshop on my team's agenda for Friday morning, I wasn't exactly the most enthusiastic. All that changed when I first set foot into the roomy warehouse, near the outskirts of Huntington Beach. I was warmly greeted by Star - one of the co-owners of this shop, along with her husband, Phil. They, along with Linda - played great hosts to my team as we dazzled and discovered our hidden artistic abilities (none that's really needed for this) the morning away. While there are a number of beautiful patterns of scarves that line the wall here - Star and Phil are upfront and cast away any self-doubt you might have about needing any bit of artistic talent. You don't actually need to be an artist yourself - as all three hosts PATIENTLY guide you through creating your very own water-marbled silk art. Phil's whimsically thorough demo started us off - and off we went! Star - ever so patient - guided me with her friendly expertise - as I initially wanted my scarf to look like one of the scarves on display - but then quickly changed my mind once the paint colors settled in - and I went for something more reflective of my mood. The end result was breathtakingly awesome. It really is wonderful to see from start to finish - how you can make your own silk art in this studio. My teammates were equally thrilled and marveled by their own creations. While my group had a private time for our workshop time - Star mentioned that they are happy to accommodate smaller groups to larger events - just call ahead to inquire. They've also setup at corporate events, Universities, traveled across the states (they've been featured in many different news programs). Pricing starts around $43, depending on the length/quality of your "canvas". Parking is relatively easy - especially since we came on a Friday morning - plenty of spots upfront and in the back. This was such a fun experience! We had a group of friends do this and we had the space to ourselves with the instructors of course! They were very helpful and explained everything we needed to know. I didn't think mine would come out very good but it came out beautifully! I went in wanting one design and came out with a complete opposite of what I had imagined. By doing your own group you are allowed to bring in food and drinks as well! We never at any point felt rushed or pressured to work faster. The paint colors and ideas are so broad you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. The price per scarf was only $49 which isn't bad for the experience and fun you'll have making and designing it yourself! read more

I was signed up for the Silk Scarf Water Marbling class by Renaissance Club and I had so much fun. There were 7 of us signed up at the same time but only three water stations so initially I was wondering if we were going to be there all day, but really once you get going it's pretty fast for each person, approximately 20 min max because you don't want the paint to dry too much before adding the silk. It is amazing watching everyone's creativity come to life and how many different ideas everyone has. What I must say for anyone who will do this, Trust the Process. I am not artistic but I knew which colors I wanted to work with and I knew I wanted my scarf to be darker with a black background not a white background. Halfway through I could not even in my mind's eye foresee how it would look and I thought it wasn't going to come out pretty. I really wanted the hearts trail that you can see in my photo, but while I was creating them I thought I had messed up big time with the colors and the size. But in the end, look how beautiful it came out! The staff guide you through every step of the process from beginning to end so you really can't mess up, but they let you choose everything along the way. There were people of all ages including children there from a different group creating scarves and it was just beautiful to watch everyone. What is really one of the best things is that the owners truly LOVE the trade, Phil is just gushing about the history of how they opened Mayu Silk and how many events they have hosted. I also loved that at the end we were given instructions to take home with us so we won't forget the after care of our scarf to help seal in the ink to prevent fading. I truly enjoyed this class and would love to come back and make another scarf again in the future! read more

Each one of us designed amazing silk scarves, and interestingly we had our colors similar in common. Honestly, i thought mine would suck because I don't consider myself artistic. I have given myself grace, and realized i am creative and can create beauty if I allow myself the space to ignore the negative self talk and just go with the flow. Came here for a private session on Valentine's Day with Star and Phil, and even though we arrived late to our appointment, they were still very nice and accommodating with their time even though we were their last session of the day. They took the time to explain their backstory and where the art comes from, and when the hands-on fun started, they were good at explaining all techniques and provided great encouragement even though we had no idea what we were doing, seeing as it was our first time doing this. Overall we had lots of fun making numerous scarves and experimenting with multiple techniques, colors and patterns. It was wonderful exploring the craft with Star and Phil as we were guided by their mastered artistry, which guaranteed our satisfaction with the scarves we made and brought home. My daughter picked this as our craft sesh (we do one every time I visit her) and we were blown away by how friendly Phil, Star and Edam were, how professional their craft studio is, and how easy and totally addictive this craft is! It is so much FUUUUUUN!! They have patterned scarves decorating their studio walls so you get plenty of inspiration for your own project (we did pareos, but they have scarves, hats, shoes, etc, so you can choose your own item). I decided on a beachy waves with flower decoration, while my daughter chose the Japanese inspired gradient stone look. Every creation is different so you will always have an individualized personal item that you and only you made. Both were so interesting to do, we helped each other as you have to move fast with the bigger items, and both used different techniques which were fascinating to learn. Star and Edam helped us learn these along the way and made sure we used the right techniques, colours and use of the dye bottles to create our fantastic pareos. It is a fascinating, wonderful process and we loved every moment of it. We are proud owners of a beautiful hand crafted pareo now, and I intend to frame mine and hang it on the wall. The studio is easy to find, with free parking right outside the door, a lovely clean restroom, free drinks in the fridge, and they can accommodate almost anyone who wants to make a scarf, from the young to the senior. They take you through the history, do an instructive demo, and answer any and all questions you have with grace and friendship, and plenty of laughs along the way. Please tip generously as every $20 tip they receive gives them enough to make and donate a free scarf to a cancer patient, to brighten up their life. Would I recommend this craft studio? Hell YES! 110% I'm hoping we can return in the future and my daughter is getting a group of friends together to make scarves. If I could give it more than 5* in Yelp I would. It might seem pricey at $44 for a scarf, but it is a lovely silk, it is original and you have hours of creative enjoyment included in that price, plus you can proudly say you made it to the awe of your friends and family, and if you tip enough a cancer patient can enjoy a scarf just as much as you do. This was SO much fun and such a unique activity. Yes, a lot of us like to be crafty. With the abundance of wine and paint companies and color me mine, there aren't too many different options. I saw Mayu Silk Art advertising on Facebook and was highly intrigued by this type of arts and crafts, so I was really excited with Ryan P wanted to do this with me. We were able to book time at their studio (they do have events on the weekends at HB Pier) and we decided on two scarves each. Once there, Phil gave us the lay of the land as we were oohing and aahing over the different scarves on display. It's amazing really. And each one is so different than the last. We got our aprons on and chose designs that spoke to us. I went first and chose my 5-6 colors that I liked. Phil instructed me on where the drops of paint should go and how heavy of a squeeze I should give the bottle. What looks like random paint blobs really turns out to be stunning. I got a lot of compliments on my first one and chose a different color palate for my second one as well as different technique. Once your pattern is set, they place the blank scarf in the water and voila! You have a handmade scarf designed by you! They place it in cold water and then give it us to follow some directions when we get home. There were a lot of people at the studio making scarves so it was nice to see what people were creating. I really love my scarves and I can't wait to give one to my mom for mother's day. It is so fun. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks Phil, Bart and Star! read more

After seeing the Utube videos, I was mezmerized by the beauty of this art form. Then I learned they were having an event only half an hour from home. I HAD to go see for myself. Even convinced my Mom to change her schedule & I took her along. Glad we went early, because they were getting busy as we left. About 6 minutes of instruction and they provided everything needed, including aprons and gloves. Phil showed Mom how to pull her colors with combs to get her desired pattern.
