    Plate from the buffet
    Kyle R.

We came through Mayo from Steinhatchee and saw this place on Yelp ... 4 stars out of 5. Pretty impressive for Mayo, FL! We were super excited to try the southern cooking that people talked about in the reviews. I was raised eating southern and soul food so I was super pumped. We all three decided to make plates from the buffet. Fried chicken, barbecue chicken, greens, Northern beans, corn, beef a Roni/mac & cheese with beef, cornbread, green beans, rice, salad bar. The chef here has a super heavy hand when it comes to salt. I love me some greens, but these were inedible they were so salty. The vegetables were literally all from McCann. Which was super disappointing. The beef a Roni was decent. Honestly the best thing about the whole Buffay was the fried chicken. It wasn't as salty. If I ever came back here literally I would order fried chicken with no sides. Hopefully, they can improve upon their quality because the concept was great.

Well this is a place I normally would not stop at but our favourite mayo haunt was closed and we were hungry. A little messy, tables a little sticky, deer head with fly traps on the antlers...i kid you not, see pic . But if you can get past all of that and grew up in a small little town like me you might be surprised. Food was pretty good. Buffet looked tasty although we ordered off menu. I would not drive to eat here but I would go back.

We made our way to the front counter and got on the list. Figured we would be in for a long wait, but our total time from putting our name on the list to being seated was under 10 minutes. It was a buffet style restaurant so the waitress got our drink order and invited us to help ourself to the buffet. The food was overall very good for everything I tried. They had 5 buffet bars set up 1 salad bar, one meats/mains, 1 veggie, 1 split veggie & warm desserts and a cold desert bar. The standout foods I tried were the fried chicken, fried catfish, and fried shrimp. I tried the catfish without many expectations since it was a buffet and not a huge catfish fan, it was one of the cleanest tasting catfish I have ever put in my mouth. The fried chicken was delicious as well. We weee totally impressed with the building, speed of service and the great food. My wife who hates most buffets even looked at me and said she would come back to this buffet anytime.

When we pulled into the parking lot only 1 hr after opening it was packed!! went in put my name on the list less the 15 mins we were seated and greeted! They have specials which change daily , today they had pork chops added to the buffet.Salad bar was amazing .And the chicken they have both baked and fried. Shrimp wasnt over breaded, matter of fact all the fried foods were perfectly seasoned and lightly breaded. The waitresses were all very friendly and came by and checked on us regularly, and refilled our sweet tea. Even the dessert bar was amazing , peanut butter cookies were so soft and my favorite. I only wish i took more pictures of food, next time!! It is only about an hour from Gainesville, nice relaxing drive and worth it!!

The turkey is always done to perfection, the ham yummy and plenty of sides and desserts. The salad bar was completely vacant, however...this was somewhat disheartening, considering how supposedly "health minded" American adults are these days. That was our first stop of the day. Cabbage slaw, carrot salad, macaroni salad, olives, huge delicious slices of beautiful tomatoes, gorgeous slices of cucumbers, nicely green lettuce, several types of peppers and ham. Cheese, salad dressing of every kind...best stop so far! Smoked pork, ribs, fried fish, yeast rolls, sliced roast beef, ham, turkey slices, meatloaf, fried chicken, baked chicken, green bean casserole, mac & cheese, cornbread dressing, turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, lima beans, black eyed peas, creamed corn, greens, rice, fried okra... Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, lemon meringue, peach cobbler, soft serve ice cream, chocolate cream pie, cookies, brownies...oh, I'm exhausted just from trying to list everything! There was so so so much more than what I even listed here, plus the absolute best waitress and Arnold Palmer maker! Why cook at home, burden yourself, spend HOURS cleaning up afterwards and hours more packing everything away? Take yourself and your loved ones out to Ole Times Country Buffet just one time for the holidays and you'll never go back to cooking again! (I sure haven't)

I believe they close at 2 p.m. We found parking, but the restaurant was full and was on a 10 minute wait for a table. I suppose that's the mark of a good, well-loved restaurant...that people are waiting to stand in line for a table! The wait was brief. On Sundays The Dixie Grill appears to host quite an after church crowd. This was our second such visit in the past 6 months. On our previous visit, my dining companion ordered The Fletch, which is NOT on the menu. A previous Yelper had reviewed the restaurant and mentioned it. My dining companion was intrigued and had to try it. You have to ask for it. It's a mac and cheese waffle, topped with a fried chicken breast, topped with flash-fried spinach and served with brown butter strawberry buffalo sauce. The plate presentation is eye catching with all the colorful components! It sounds weird, but for my dining companion who seeks out chicken and waffle entrees, this was enough to entice him. It was interesting, tasty and filling, but when a server passed by with a plate of fried chicken destined for another table, he looked longingly as that plate passed his gaze. We knew he would be ordering the fried chicken plate on this trip. We were seated and our server promptly greeted us and took our order. We had reviewed the menu in advance and knew what we were ordering. The fried chicken platter is $12.00 (white) and comes with two sides. In this case, my companion chose green beans and mashed potatoes. The plate also came with a roll or bread item of choice. The meal is filling and there was enough to take home half for lunch the next day. I ordered the chicken tender dinner for $13.00, which also came with two sides and a bread item. I chose mac and cheese and cole slaw. The mac and cheese was good. I don't care for the overly creamy cheese that loses the cheese flavor. This mac and cheese appeared to be the baked casserole type and I liked it! There were four chicken tenders served with honey mustard on the side. Both the fried chicken and chicken tenders are prepared with a batter that stays ON the chicken pieces when fried. Whatever it is, it's totally delicious. The green beans were steamed and served with pieces of diced bacon. Again, wonderful. My companion ordered a roll, which was soft and served with butter on the side. I ordered the hush puppies, served as a duo and fried, but still soft on the inside. If you haven't overeaten, I recommend you save room for dessert. The coconut cream pie is delightful and ample enough for two to share. The menu options are decidedly southern and a hearty meal for anyone with an appetite. The service staff are friendly, cordial and accommodating. We do like visiting Live Oak on Sundays and many of their local restaurants are closed on Sundays. The Dixie Grill is open on Sundays and this is a fantastic option for a breakfast, brunch or lunch!
