The Dixie Grill - Chicken tender plate with Cole slaw, Mac and cheese and hush puppies.
    Diane H.

The Dixie Grill is located in the historic downtown area of Live Oak, Florida. We arrived at 1:15 p.m. on a Sunday. I believe they close at 2 p.m. We found parking, but the restaurant was full and was on a 10 minute wait for a table. I suppose that's the mark of a good, well-loved restaurant...that people are waiting to stand in line for a table! The wait was brief. On Sundays The Dixie Grill appears to host quite an after church crowd. This was our second such visit in the past 6 months. On our previous visit, my dining companion ordered The Fletch, which is NOT on the menu. A previous Yelper had reviewed the restaurant and mentioned it. My dining companion was intrigued and had to try it. You have to ask for it. It's a mac and cheese waffle, topped with a fried chicken breast, topped with flash-fried spinach and served with brown butter strawberry buffalo sauce. The plate presentation is eye catching with all the colorful components! It sounds weird, but for my dining companion who seeks out chicken and waffle entrees, this was enough to entice him. It was interesting, tasty and filling, but when a server passed by with a plate of fried chicken destined for another table, he looked longingly as that plate passed his gaze. We knew he would be ordering the fried chicken plate on this trip. We were seated and our server promptly greeted us and took our order. We had reviewed the menu in advance and knew what we were ordering. The fried chicken platter is $12.00 (white) and comes with two sides. In this case, my companion chose green beans and mashed potatoes. The plate also came with a roll or bread item of choice. The meal is filling and there was enough to take home half for lunch the next day. I ordered the chicken tender dinner for $13.00, which also came with two sides and a bread item. I chose mac and cheese and cole slaw. The mac and cheese was good. I don't care for the overly creamy cheese that loses the cheese flavor. This mac and cheese appeared to be the baked casserole type and I liked it! There were four chicken tenders served with honey mustard on the side. Both the fried chicken and chicken tenders are prepared with a batter that stays ON the chicken pieces when fried. Whatever it is, it's totally delicious. The green beans were steamed and served with pieces of diced bacon. Again, wonderful. My companion ordered a roll, which was soft and served with butter on the side. I ordered the hush puppies, served as a duo and fried, but still soft on the inside. If you haven't overeaten, I recommend you save room for dessert. The coconut cream pie is delightful and ample enough for two to share. The menu options are decidedly southern and a hearty meal for anyone with an appetite. The service staff are friendly, cordial and accommodating. We do like visiting Live Oak on Sundays and many of their local restaurants are closed on Sundays. The Dixie Grill is open on Sundays and this is a fantastic option for a breakfast, brunch or lunch!

If you find yourself in Live Oak, looking for love in the form of comfort food, then pop on over to the Dixie Grill. They're serving up some of the best southern food I've ever put in my mouth. I ordered The Fletch. I'd ordered it before and came back for more. Imagine a mac n cheese waffle, yup--mac'n'cheese WAFFLE, topped with a juicy chicken breast fried to perfection. This is then topped with flash-fried spinach. But the true hero of this dish is the brown butter strawberry buffalo sauce. I know, it sounds weird, but it's one of the most memorable and delicious meals I've ever had. I keep coming back for it. My hubby went for the more traditional breakfast fare. The biscuits and gravy were on point. Dixie Grill knows what's up when it comes to breakfast fixings. Service is prompt and friendly. Trust me, your coffee cup won't run dry here. The fact that locals love this place is a testament to their commitment to their community and its people. Ambiance? It's a local diner where neighbors scooch in with each other to share a cup of coffee and comfort. Overall Dixie Grill is a lovely little spot to fill your belly with comfort food while being treated like one of the family. Stop in on your way through. You won't regret it. Oh, and don't forget to get a piece of homemade pie. (The coconut cream is my favorite)

We loved this spot! They are some breakfast masters. We ordered some of everything and it was all BANGIN. It reminded me of the best homemade breccy cooked by someone's nanna. Staff were great and welcoming too. Absolutely coming back

I ate here today around noon with my fiance and mother in law. It was my first time eating here and we enjoyed it a lot. You can enjoy breakfast or lunch. It's a cute diner with home style, Southern cooking and friendly service. Our drinks never ran dry, but our waitress wasn't hovering. The decor is farm house chic and the restaurant has lots of seating. I had a sweet tea and a club sandwich. My fiance got the biscuits and gravy and a Nettles link sausage. The sweet tea was perfectly sweet and the club was a nice double decker with crispy bacon. The biscuits and gravy was nothing special, but the sausage was perfectly cooked with a crispy casing. I would definitely eat here again. Rating from an A+++ to an F, it gets an A+.

Had breakfast here while in town for a wedding at the advice of the groom. It's a typical small town greasy spoon. Sadly, I was disappointed with the service, food quality and cost. My bill alone was $17 without tip for an underwhelming meal. Menu stated $8 for the belt buster...I was up-charged for things that were advertised/included in description (shredded potato) AND for cheese that I asked server to exclude. While pancakes were big, they didn't taste fresh plus the texture wasn't fluffy - like they were old and put on a skillet (again). If ever in this town for breakfast/brunch, consult Yelp for a better option.

A group of us wanted breakfast and decided to stop here and give it a try. Upon coming, I had read the reviews but went against the grain and still came. We were seated immediately to a dirty table. We watched many of the wait staff go by without an acknowledgement till one in our party asked for a rag. We finally got a waitress that was very good and polite willing to do what she could to smooth the onset over. We all ordered breakfast. We never went empty with coffee, but started hearing from surrounding tables how long people were waiting for their food. So needless to say, we were starting to worry as our food was taking pretty long to get out. The owner came over and we inquired about our food with anticipation of leaving if it wasn't started and paying only for our drinks. The owner came out with our food. We all got the food we ordered and cooked the way we asked. It was rather bland though, but that is a personal opinion. The owner realized I was a yelper due to the 10% coupon and came and apologized. He was a very pleasant man and seemed to care about his customers. It went along way to helping the experience, but even with that being said, it seemed like the kitchen and the organization needs help as the potential of being a better business is definitely there.

We have here a skinny omelette sandwich made with our French toast deliciousness

Let's not get reckless. Nobody is confusing this place with the Disney World of gas stations. But Busy Bee absolutely wants you to know it studied the Buc-ee's playbook in great detail and copied enough homework to pass the class. And honestly? Respect. After hours on the road, I pulled in needing gas, caffeine, food, a restroom, and probably some emotional reassurance from the highway gods. Busy Bee delivered on most of it. First off, the bathrooms were clean. Not "gas station clean." Actually clean. That alone immediately moves a roadside stop up at least one full star in America's travel grading system. Then came the snack exploration phase. They had homemade jerky, specialty snacks, random road trip impulse purchases, and enough "well I wasn't planning to buy this but here we are" items to keep me wandering around longer than intended. It's the kind of place where you walk in for a drink and somehow leave holding candied pecans, smoked sausage, and a giant bag of pork rinds you'll later regret in silence. The overall vibe was solid too. Convenient. Clean. Easy stop. Good energy from the place itself. The employees though? Let's just say the staff had the collective facial expression of people who may have originally applied at Buc-ee's and ended up here after the universe made other plans. Nobody was rude. But there was definitely an emotional support shift happening behind the counter. Still, for a highway stop, Busy Bee absolutely gets the job done. It's a good place to refuel both your gas tank and your stomach before heading back into the chaos of interstate survival. This is probably a true three-and-a-half star stop if we're getting technical about it. But Yelp refuses to acknowledge the beauty of nuance, and I'm feeling generous today. So four stars it is for the little roadside gas station that looked at Buc-ee's empire and said, we can absolutely make a run at this thing.
