Carton House is a beautiful property with vast grounds for golf, falconry, and hiking. My room was…read morespacious and the bed was very comfortable for a night's rest. The Rose 31 shampoos, conditioners, and lotions in the room were lovely. Breakfast was included with the room rate, and there was an ample selection of warm and cold traditional breakfast items, including my favorites black and white pudding, potato farls, creamy scrambled eggs, poached eggs, local cheese, local jam, honey comb, and assorted espresso drinks and teas. If judging by the room, breakfast, and the grounds alone, I would provide a 5-star rating. However, I found the climate control to be inconsistent throughout the hotel (1 star off). Air conditioning was mostly available in individual rooms, but lacking in main hallways and public bathrooms. The woman's bathroom on the ground floor felt like a sauna. The staff was pleasant, but service seemed forced, and at times awkward (1 star off). For example, when I arrived, the greeter asked me where I am from. I said California, and then he said nothing. It seemed like he had been trained to ask guests that question, but had no idea how to follow up to carry on a conversation. There are a couple restaurants on-site. I had dinner at the Carriage House, which is where the hotel breakfast is served and open to the public as a restaurant for dinner. The striploin with fries was good, but the pan-seared cod was not. I also did not like the shrimp cocktail (way too much dressing) or chai crème brûlée (no chai flavor, just a very heavy custard). The sourdough bread was delicious (we ordered several baskets!) Dinner on-site was convenient, but hit-or-miss. Lastly, the hotel has many doors that close off hallways. They are fire doors and must be closed. I understand this is an old property and the architectural design may not have been updated, but it made the hotel feel closed off and uninviting. Well, if the main hallways are not hot like a sauna, maybe it would not be a fire hazard in the first place.

Lovely rooms and amenities with some some of the best service we have had. Lovely hallways that beg with a Jameson and intimate conversation. I'm quite disappointed that I was treated like this customer service and a small budget compassion needs to be addressed by Management. Noise stopped late in the evening only to return at 7:30am the following morning whilst guests tried to sleep in the surrounding rooms. Called reception & was told that the work needed to continue regardless. Noise was so intense that my keys on the desk were rattling...at 7:30am. Manager was very apologetic and offered us a discount and change of room which we received after midday. Noise was still ongoing but thankfully we were moved to the far side of the hotel where it couldn't be heard. What could be heard was every time a guest in the surrounding rooms used any of the toilet facilities (toilets, taps, showers etc.) which causes a loud humming sound. Icing on the cake was the 10 minute false alarm at 7:20am on the final morning which was loud enough to draw guests from their rooms. Upon waiting for a taxi later in the day, I witnessed guests express similar concerns only to be told the hotel was fully booked and no additional rooms were available. A really disappointing stay from start to finish and certainly not a 4 star service. Hotel would have been aware of the ongoing construction work yet sold the rooms regardless, for €130+ per night nonetheless. Although a minor discount was given, my girlfriend & I would have genuinely been more comfortable in the public park. Really poor hotel etiquette & I would not recommend this location to anyone seeking accommodation in the Maynooth area. Shame on those responsible for the sale of those rooms.

I am a gym member here so that is the context of my review…read more There is plenty of cardio machines and a fairly large weights area. Pool and jacuzzi are available although I haven't used them. Recently the place has been refurbished, basically a paint job and all new cardio machines and some new weights - nice touches are the motivational writing scattered in just the right places! There is a personal training service available to members free of charge which in my case involves a session where you work through a personalised workout with the trainer. Do that workout for 6 weeks, have a reassessment, wash, rinse, repeat. I'm on my 4th workout now and can't fault anything in this service. There are also plenty of classes free to members - if you plan to use the studio for circuit training check the class timetable ahead of time as you won't (obviously) be allowed in during a class. There is a spinning studio also which again, I've never used but nice option to have. They recently removed the wet whipped and replaced them with paper towels which to me, looks like a backward step hygiene wise. Main criticisms are:- the dated showers - no temp control and they are the 10 second type that stop every 10 seconds. I can tell the locker room was very nice when it was first built but could really do with an update, actually no it really really needs an update! Also if you forget your towel they charge 2euro to rent a towel!!! At 500 (yes in this day and age!!!) per annum membership fee charging for a towel for an hour is very cheeky. Often the hotel has conferences on which lead to no parking available but to be fair I've found as long as you don't block someone in, you can generally park on yellows etc without being clamped. Membership options are 50 month by month, 150 for 3 months or 500 per year. No other choice in the area so this is really your only option but for the only option it's still a great gym.

The bed was surprisingly comfortable despite it being old. Decor was dated but I like the fact that you can crack the window open to let in fresh air to chase away the stale smell of the carpet. Bath tub and shower stall are separate so 3 stars for the hotel. That one extra star goes to the free breakfast. Buffet style, you can build yourself a traditional Irish breakfast with eggs, ham/sausage and beans which I had the first day. There's fresh fruit, juices, tea and coffee. The hotel was very nice, good sized rooms and quiet nice bathrooms. They had a fan in the room and the bed was comfortable. The shower and bathroom were clean and everything worked well. The staff at breakfast and at the desk were wonderful! Very kind and helpful! Unbeknownst to us, there was to be a wedding. I tried to fall asleep at 11:00 PM while listening to bass thumping and loud announcements like I was above a rave. This went on until 2:30 a.m. I would recommend this hotel 100%, but would make sure there isn't an event at the time of your stay.

I booked online for ourselves and two guests, £712 for two nights for two couples. On arrival we were met by a sullen lady receptionist in the hostility rather than hospitality business. Her greeting was 100,000 welcomes short. Avoiding eye contact, she quickly drew attention that I'd only booked one guest per room. I wasn't aware, it was my mistake booking on-line so I paid the £40 shortfall for additional breakfasts to avoid challenge at breakfast but guess what, on the first morning I was embarrassed to see our guests challenged for additional money by a manager in front of other guests in the breakfast room minutes after being shown to our table. I went to reception for a senior manager but none were on duty: I said I'd return early evening for the night. No one bothered to find me - efficiency ceased at grabbing my cash. The charming, morning reception lady couldn't explain why this happened but feeding their greed didn't work. We dined in their restaurant night one; maximum priced against least effort to make - same in their cafe. It took ages for our order to come - pizzas, salads - that came soon after I enquired from a minimum wage waitress. Staff were rushed. We dined elsewhere next night. Breakfast next morning delivered the toughest saltiest 'crispy' bacon I had the displeasure to eat: solid leathery. Any chef would know they served rubbish. I prefer fish (we got fish in the two cheaper better customer focussed hotels) but not offered here so Ireland's fishery industry is unsupported. Sausages were overcooked, plum tomatoes weren't plum but round, 'free range' eggs aren't and mushrooms tasted like they were tinned. The honey isn't honey; fake from China and Mexico - rubbish. A second coffee pour isn't offered. Waitresses carrying the pot don't make eye contact so must be called. They were, but guests shouldn't have to shout for coffee. The soft water isn't filtered so coffee/tea tastes sour, again no expense spent. I'm glad I didn't ask for cappuccino. Our in room tea bags contained micro plastics. There's irony here - the hotel shop flogs Irish produce yet at breakfast no Boyne Valley or local honey nor support Irish fishing. The tomato, brown sauce and mustard pouches are cheap with chemicals added - no better quality Heinz, HP or Colman's mustard - maximum dosh from customers minimum spent on customers. Breakfast second morning was avoidably grim - remember £180 a night for two with breakfast. The brekky menu states 'eggs any way' so avoiding horrid bacon, cheap sausages I opted for omelette 2 eggs but waitress instantly said 'we don't do omelettes' I rehearsed 'eggs any way' omelette is eggs simple, easy quick. I asked for a manager, twice in 24 hours none appeared: there was one I saw him. Management had two opportunities to speak with me directly, a third would soon arise. I expect a menu re write to not do omelettes. The polite waitress returned after a good while. She unapologetically asked what omelette I wanted - our youth are often curt and don't do hospitality well. I got an overcooked plain one. So here it's seems too much effort for high paying guests: a lazy chef. Another 100,000 welcomes and one apology short. On return to our room after our second avoidably unpleasant brekky experience in 24 hours the door key card wouldn't work. The room cleaner was next door. She refused to open the door and as English isn't her first language we understood her to say she'd go to reception as she walked away. After several minutes she returned but we had misunderstood so I entered the room she was cleaning (guests had left) to phone down. It was the lady I'd raised the money grabbing incident with; here was a third missed opportunity by management. She apologised and sent up new cards taking 15 minutes when she simply could have told the cleaner to let us into our £180 a night room. I know cards malfunction but we were peeved at all the malfunctions, money grabbing and at over three score and 10 with a belly of negotiated omelette I wasn't up for trekking to reception and back. On the matter of three score and ten and male I've sympathy for plumbing and our in-room radiator came on noisily each morning. 90 minutes swishing constantly running water sounds and clunky hissing noise so much so I couldn't get back to sleep. Climbing into the bath to shower is challenging. On departure the polite morning receptionist asked if I was sorted, indicating she had escalated my complaints. She invited me to speak to a manager but it was pointless as we were leaving. There's management here but not as we know it Jim; beam me up Scotty. Caveat Emptor applies here in spades; they forget the rule customers make paydays.

The hotel is located a short drive from Ashbourne town which is a great place to pop in for a meal with plenty of really good restaurants. The hotel also has a nice selection of dishes on their al a carte menu as well as a buffet. We dined in he second night from the buffet and found the food to be excellent, especially the desserts which included beautiful profiteroles filled with creme patisserie (not cream which is a sin) and a wedge of cheese cake which was light and delicious, melting in the mouth making you feel like having a second one would not hurt the waist line too much. Every member of staff from the cleaning staff to duty managers always greeted us with a smile and a friendly hello and you are really made feel at home while staying there. The rooms are warm, comfortable and modern making each night after a hectic day a joy to return to. The hotel ensures that all guests are catered for especially the children with nightly activities organised for all the family which included a kids disco and bingo. We attended the kids disco with DJ Richie B who really entertained the kids giving out prizes and covering children with snow from his snow machine while playing frozen songs. I could go on and on but to sum everything up this is a fantastic hotel with fantastic staff in a fantastic location. We loved it and will definitely be back.
