Ybor City is an amazing enclave in Tampa filled with rich history. We were on the hunt for icecream while walking the area and stumbled upon Mayday Ice Cream. The staff were so kind and patient with my kids. It wasn't busy and they let them have as many samples as they wanted to ensure their satisfaction once they ordered their "pilot" (single scoop) of icecream. Mayday Ice Cream has fun and funky flavors like lavender tea, parent trap (Oreo cookies and peanut butter add ins) and more! The establishment was clean and well maintained. The staff went over and above, really making the experience special. They even offered to go containers and a foil bag to help keep the ice cream from melting when my kids felt full. I love trying new ice cream shops and unique flavors. We stopped here after lunch for dessert. Cute little shop. Was not crowded at all during a weekday early afternoon. We had found street parking on the main street earlier. It's location on the street with the trolley and right across a stop. Didn't even bother with samples. Of course, we got the 6 scoop flight to share and each picked 3 of what we thought sounded good: key lime, triple vanilla, mango lassi, straight strawberry, blue sky blues, blackberry earl. Not everything tasted as expected, but not necessarily a bad thing. I think I enjoyed the earl grey the most. The ice cream scoop bathroom key was cute but probably not the most hygienic thing. They also have pints to take home, so I did end up taking the chocolate flavored one with the brownie bites because it was that good. My s/o loved the salted caramel flavor. They had so many unique flavors, and the man working there was very kind and let us sample whichever ones looked good to us. I sampled the Miso honey flavor and the Cloud 9 and both were so delicious. I ended up going with classic Midnight chocolate and it was perfect. If you like mint, the Mint Monster will be your dream. I brought my 3 year old nephew in for an after school treat and he ordered the ice cream with ores and the cashier kindly offered him some sprinkles to top it. Maybe the issue was that I was trying to be adventurous and ordered the bourbon glazed pecan ice cream with a shot of espresso, so an affogato... hated it. I recently heard a podcast--the Sporkful--and heard for the first time of Affogato. An Italian coffee-based dessert, vanilla gelato or ice cream topped or "drowned" with a shot of hot espresso. We first walked by Mayday, until I looked inside and spotted 'Affogato' on their menu. So we turned around and entered Mayday. I ordered my Affogato with the Queen Salted Caramel. This is my first time ordering Affogato, and I liked it, however at Mayday they poured cold expressions over the ice-cream. Not that it bothered me, but I have to try it with hot espresso some day. Both of my flavors were a 10/10. Great taste, and actually blended well together! It sits in the same location where The Hyppo used to be in Centro Ybor BUT since it's owned by the same company, there's also a case of pops for sale next to the ice cream. Made my night!! Customer service here is great! I forgot her name but she was the sweetest and was very polite. She offered us to try as many flavors as we wanted. I asked for an milkshake but they didn't have but she did recommend the affogato which I never had. It's basically ice cream with a shot of espresso on top. Tasty ice cream. I ordered delivery via DoorDash. I ordered a pint of Strawberry Fields and a pint of Gillespie Rum Pecan. They arrived in less than a hour. They were well packaged (the ice cream pints were individually wrapped in insulated bags). Mayday thoughtfully included a couple waffle cookies and a baggie of sprinkles with our order. (Admittedly, I don't think sprinkles have ever helped any dessert, but I kept them to give to my kids, who do enjoy sprinkles.) I thought the taste of both flavors was very good. The elderflower was mild when mixed with the strawberry, so it was just a little more floral. The rum flavor was very smooth in the rum pecan ice cream. My main complaint with that ice cream is that the pecans were in tiny pieces, so they weren't crunchy, and they were so evenly dispersed that the ice cream wasn't smooth. However, that didn't keep me from finishing my serving! I avoid Ybor at night, so I'd wondered when I'd ever be able to try out Mayday, so I was happy to see that they use DoorDash. I think it was worth the delivery fee to get to try it, although I admit that I prefer Jeni's or Chill Bros. Still, it's fun to have alcohol-laced ice cream. read more
