I jacked my knee and had to get my ACL replaced last November.
Then I jacked it again in late January.
When I jacked it the second time, my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Brusque -- a guy who I believe to be a genuinely gifted surgeon -- was your typical orthopedic surgeon who barely had time to say:
"...how ya doin'? looks like your knee is fucked in half again, any questions? adios..."
By then I had been a couple of months into physical therapy, and had up until the re-injury felt like I was 30 days out from running a 5k. I left the surgeon's office cursing Redding for having bridges of inadequate height from which to leap.
This is where Doug proved his real worth. Doug is a triathlete, so I think he kind of "gets" the proud yet fragile headspace of the aging jock. He saw me through the highs (my exuberance before the second coming of the jacked knee) and the lows (after Dr. Brusque told me that it would take not just one but TWO surgeries to fix the new damage -- the first just to clean out his previous handiwork; the second to install ACL ver. 2.2).
Doug called up my MRI report on the radiology lab's web site, studied the report, and gave me the detailed explanation of how much damage had actually been done -- useful info that Dr. Brusque had failed to deliver. Turns out, the news wasn't hopeless. My graft still has some integrity -- possibly enough so that I won't have to get it redone. I got back on the training regime and am now starting to feel like the whole thing wasn't a waste.
If your'e in need of some physical therapy, I heartily recommend Doug and his two pretty raven-haired shorties for all your PT needs. I'd even recommend that you drive from Redding to PC for your PT. read more
