We started with a chorizo queso that I devoured. M is fussy about chewy bits so (lucky for me) didn't eat his share. Then he ordered a carne asada with potatoes and beans - both regular and an interesting green! Cooked to perfection. Again, he is fussy about chewy bits but loved the flavor. I had a dish I've never seen on any menu before. A duck mole and rice tower. It was fabulous!! We loved everything. And. Guess what?!?! Free ice cream cones!! What a great place!!!!

To clarify the stars: for people who will like this place (count me in!), five stars. For the…read moreaverage person, three stars for being an acquired taste. So, four. I tried only the catfish nachos from the menu, and they lived up to their billing. The catfish was expertly blackened, the balance between fish, chips, cheese, and sauces was perfect, and a half-order was plenty for one person. Unexpectedly bang-on as a flavor & texture combo, the only thing the nachos lacked was a tastier beer accompaniment. Since this is a little-known, hard-to-spot and relatively small neighborhood bar, almost everyone who comes in is a local regular who sits in the same spot every day. So, only the most mainstream of mainstream beer is available, tap or bottle. I made do with a draft Shiner Bock, which was fine, but I encourage management to broaden their clientele's tastes a bit for their own benefit, as well as for the occasional out-of-towner intrigued by the Yelp review and/or looking for food at an off-hour. That said, everyone is very friendly and welcoming, and Rachel deserves all the accolades she gets in the reviews -- the very model of a tavern proprietor. You go, Rachel!

The salsa I'm not too sure about but they come in carafes so you can pour your own. I ordered the Big Boy burrito. It was very tasty. Our server was very attentive and on top of it. He came by to let me know the drinks would be on the way as the bartender was busy. I think we all appreciate when they are proactive instead of pretending nothing is amiss. The prices were very reasonable. The food was great and the ambiance is nice. I would definitely stop in again if in the area again. One thing to note is it isn't right off the highway (contrary to what it looks like on the map). It's a good 8-9 miles off the highway.

We stopped in tonight for dinner after dropping a kid off at Ole Miss. this building is from the 1800's, which is pretty cool in and of itself. When you roll up to Taylor Grocery, it literally is like taking a step back in time. This is about as old school as you'll find. We entered and left our name and then were told to wait outside until our name was called. The wait was only maybe 10 minutes. We were seated and given menus and began our perusing. We settled on a sample app, a bowl of gumbo, a small fried catfish dinner and a country fried pork meal. The sample was quick to arrive, hush puppies, boneless chicken wings, catfish nuggets and fried shrimp. Everything was hot and delicious. The entrees arrived shortly after. The catfish dinner was hot and delicious, the fries with rotella were also hot and delicious and the baked beans were also good. The country fried pork was cooked well and also hot and delicious and crunchy. The gravy was flavorful and the side of okra and fries were also tasty. We finished the meal with a slice of pecan pie with ice cream. The ice cream is absolutely delicious and the pie was great too. I will note, this is the south, salt is used liberally on everything down here and Taylor Grocery is no exception. So be warned, it will have a bold salty flavor if you're eating fried foods here. The server was fantastic, Jeff the host was also fantastic. Refills were given freely and liberally and the live music was outstanding as well. You absolutely must try Taylor Grocery, the ambience and history and food is absolutely awesome.
