Not sure if it was because I'm a minority or because I was casually dressed, but every look from the staff seemed to be a quick scan to my hands and pockets to make sure I'm not stealing anything. It was incredibly uncomfortable and offensive. Which is too bad, since my daughter would have loved that store and I would have loved to purchase a few items there. When I explained to Mr. MVP what we were doing on Saturday morning he immediately groaned because he does not like consignment stores. Admittedly, the clothing we had to sell was much more conservative (Lands End, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer) then the items in the store, the items we brought in were in much better shape then the clothes we saw on the racks in the store. While our clothing was reviewed for its worthiness we looked around the shop and I noticed the prices were insanely high. A pair of (obviously) used calf high Bogs rain boots for $28. My brand new knee high Bogs with a lifetime guarantee were just $36 on sale. There was also a pair of Vans sneakers for $22, which is crazy! Brand new Van sneakers are $27. What sucks is that this shop had a lot of options in my size - small and extra small - but the clothing was so overpriced it just did not make sense. The shop is clean and fairly well organized, which is why we are giving it two stars. We took our rejected and out of date clothing and happily donated all of them to the American Cancer Center Thrift store next door.

Most likely you'll lose money and move out quickly so the next unsuspecting victim can move in. The owner keeps store hours very limited because she pays the hourly help out of her pocket and it save her lots of money to have limited hours. All the while rent is due each month from vendors. You'd be better off selling on FB Marketplace, eBay, etc. Avoid this place at all costs.

There's plenty of used clothing (the store's policy is to pay 40 percent of what they plan to sell them for for items from the last few seasons or $1 for anything older). I scored a $100 swimsuit in like-new condition for $8 and was delighted. They also carry designer purses up behind the counter for considerably below retail. I adore the store layout and just about every stitch of clothing inside -- although I did experience a bit of sticker shock when I glanced at price tags. My eye gravitated to a luxuriously soft light sweater-cape in a pale pink with bright pink polka dots that I was hoping might be on sale since it's a bit too warm for the current season. No such luck ... it was almost $300. Sigh ... I moved on. Found the cutest little fuchsia and orange sundress. D'oh ... nearly $300 again. I have a hard time parting with that much money for clothing that only gets a few months use since it's only hot in Michigan for a few months of the year. If I lived in Florida, it would absolutely be worth the splurge. There are quite a few more budget-friendly items at Tulips, including one new clothing line that's closer to the $50 mark, but this season's line from them wasn't in the vibrant colors that made the rest of Tulip's apparel appeal so much. They also have some wonderful travel-friendly, wrinkle free clothes that I'll be sure to check out next time I'm planning to go on vacation. Jewelry, too, is very affordable and bright and pizzazy ... I posted a bunch of pictures on yelp. This would be a great spot to stop for gifts as well as they had gorgeous beach blankets in vibrant patterns (flamingos, anchors, peacock feathers and other themes), Derby hats and other fun tchotchkes. Tulips is a now a must-stop spot for me when I'm in the Oakwood Plaza neck of the woods. What a great little area to shop local! I highly recommend wandering the whole area and popping in to all the great local spots.

I grew up in Kalamazoo until I moved away at 25 years old, and though I knew of this store, I don't…read moreremember ever going into it before I moved. I very well may have as a child but wouldn't remember. Once I moved, going home came a very big deal to me and embraced Michigan, and more importantly, Kalamazoo became so much of a bigger deal to me. Each time I have been home since 2007, I have stopped into The Spirit of Kalamazoo to check out what new items they may have that I feel I "need." I have gotten things over the years that now I wished I got two of, specially the "Just Another Animal in the Zoo" cup that I bought in pink, but broke and I cannot find anywhere online to replace. The store has lots of odds and end art pieces from local artist, some of which I pick up as I go for when I can make an amazing room filled with things from home and sports, especially since I am a die hard Michigan sports fan. The staff are always friendly and helpful but also let you shop without hovering over you. I am very glad that I can help this local business each time I am home, as it has become part of my journey now.
