Summary: Soma Tile (Lucas) is a partner through the process and his team is comprised of skilled…read moreand courteous professionals. I would not hesitate in referring them to anyone looking for bath and tile work!! Preface: Let me start this tale with some background. This project was not an exciting "Lets update our 20 year old bathroom and make it stylish and pretty". Instead the project started due to an undetected leak, the stress that comes from random water leaking in random places, and was filled with questions and concerns. Countless others "assured" me that this was a plumbing issue or just due to some neglected maintenance on a 5 year old new-install shower - and then wanted to blast holes everywhere to "find" the leak. At the same time, I did not want to rip apart a shower to then find out it might be plumbing and now a full on repair. I felt overwhelmed in making the wrong choice and doing 2 projects chasing my tail. Lucas walked me through all the typical scenarios that he has seen, leaning on the most probably is a structural fail of the shower system and then did a methodical exploration. A couple hours later and a minimal demo, he confirmed that it was in fact not plumbing related and was def. a failure of the shower system -- and walked me through what it would take. Once his team was onsite, they were focused - creating a whole "clean room" at the entry to the bathroom. 1 day demo, 1 day water-proof, 2 days tile - all while providing the proper time for dry-out and leak testing between steps. Lucas is a perfectionist, being critical on the most minor details -- which to someone that also strives for this level, but has no idea what they are looking for, was very much appreciated. Additionally, he has instilled this value in his team - that are true craftsman with their skill. Each step of the process was walked through, discussed, and made sure we understood the task, goal, and expectations. This is why I say Lucas/Soma Tile was a true partner in this project, as it wasn't a fun project -- it was an overwhelming stressful start where Soma Tile helped take some of the burden and concerns off our shoulders and work it through with their own expertise, experience, and dedication - ensuring every step was executed with precision. Soma Tile knows their craft - Lucas is a partner, his team are craftsman. Huge Thanks to Lucas, Jesus, and Miguel -- not to forget Jose who magically appeared on the last day to leave the place spotless.

Lucas patiently reviewed design options with me and provided insightful guidance throughout the install. The attention to the smallest detail, combined with the use of a laser to ensure straight lines of tiles was impressive. No detail was overlooked! The color selection of grout was carefully coordinated with the tile. The workmanship is OUTSTANDING! The team demonstrated the same quality standards as they grouted and cleaned the tile repeatedly. Upon completion, Lucas, and his team cleaned the bathroom, and their work area. Soma tile was on time and a pleasure to work with! They truly are craftsman and take pride in their work. I would strongly recommend Lucas and his team.

Ah, yes, we live in the age of DIY. Especially when it comes to home improvement…read more Who hasn't found themselves sucked in by one of those home remodeling shows? You know, the ones where they show the before and after of a kitchen, bathroom, etc.? It always looks so easy on TV, and they miraculously get everything done within the hour! Real life ain't like that, folks. Every home improvement task we have attempted has taken way longer than we thought, and cost way more money than we had planned. Sure, you still save over hiring a contractor, and there is that feeling of satisfaction when all is said and done. But realistically, those HGTV shows edit out a lot of blood, sweat and tears. And cost overruns. Anyhow, I'm getting off subject. We look to save money on materials whenever we do home improvement. Plus, I try to support anybody other than the local Big Box stores. You know, the ones that seem to have a monopoly on EVERYTHING home related. (I'm talking to you Home Depot) They usually have lousy customer service, to boot. Well APEX flooring is just the opposite of those big box stores. Easily located off the Dan Ryan in Pilsen, they have a private parking lot attached. The store is small and easily navigated, but packed with a large assortment of floor coverings, including ceramic, wood, cork, and others. Lowell, the owner, is pleasant, friendly and a joy to deal with; he's also extremely knowledgeable concerning flooring and it's installation. I found their prices to be extremely competitive, and they even have some of their most popular tiles in stock, which is fantastic. Choosing and purchasing our new kitchen tile was such a pleasant experience at APEX, I can't wait to finish our kitchen remodel and figure out what home improvement project we can tackle next! [ just don't tell my husband that yet; give him a chance to recover ; ) ]

When we looked at the big box home improvement & tile stores, we were really disappointed at the lack of knowledge and samples available, a real waste of time.

Review Update: Second Experience with Marco After my initial…read morereview regarding my positive experience with Bert, I've since worked with Marco on a second project. While Marco is undoubtedly skilled in his craft, I find myself increasingly wary of his professionalism and attention to detail. I feel compelled to share the issues that raised red flags during this latest experience. First, Marco's punctuality is a constant problem. He was almost always late, and he would often have to leave shortly after to pick up supplies--supplies he had somehow forgotten to bring in the first place. This lack of preparation creates unnecessary delays, and I simply couldn't trust that he would arrive or finish on time as planned. There were other concerning issues that built up over time. Marco left the project unfinished for days, leaving work incomplete that didn't rely on other parts of the job. On one occasion, my modem was mysteriously unplugged while work was being done in the bathroom, a minor incident at first, but it raised questions about why he was in my bedroom at all. When I asked him about it, he acted as though he had no idea how it happened, which felt disingenuous given the location of the modem and the fact that it was hidden behind a mirror. As the job progressed, it became clear that Marco was attempting to increase the price unexpectedly. He claimed that I hadn't been charged for everything, including work he had already completed, such as installing tile. This sudden change in pricing was not only confusing but also concerning given the pattern of miscommunication and questionable charges. Furthermore, there were incidents that raised suspicion about his work ethic. For example, when installing a glass shower door, I heard loud clanging and banging noises coming from the other room. Afterward, Marco informed me that the rails for the shower door were too damaged to install. Coincidentally, I had only noticed minor scratches on the rails earlier when he showed them to me, but there were visible dents afterwards. I can't help but wonder if the damage was caused during the loud noises I heard. Marco also damaged freshly painted walls while working. While he did patch the areas, he insisted that it was my responsibility to repaint them. This isn't the standard of care I expect when hiring a contractor, and it felt like he was trying to avoid accountability for his mistakes. Lastly, I found that Marco charged me for items I didn't need, like extra pipe fittings and even a mop, which were never used in the project. He installed a toilet and purchased supplies for install; however when the same toilet was installed in another bathroom everything needed for installation was included in the box. Upon reviewing the receipts, I noticed several discrepancies and questionable charges. For instance, he charged me for connectors intended for a dishwasher, despite the fact that my project was focused on connecting a toilet and sink. Additionally, there were multiple pipe fittings listed that were completely unnecessary and didn't match the required sizes for the project. Even worse, Marco swapped out parts that I had already provided, such as the stainless steel drain I had purchased, and installed a cheaper substitute without consulting me. I'm very cautious about reimbursing contractors for materials, and this experience only reaffirmed my wariness, especially given the discrepancies in the receipts. In conclusion, while Marco is certainly capable and the work he did was good, I would recommend being cautious when hiring him. It's clear that he needs more oversight. I would suggest double-checking his receipts line by line, ensuring you aren't being charged for unnecessary items or parts that are swapped out without your knowledge. His tendency to be late, leave jobs incomplete, and make changes to pricing or materials after the fact makes him less reliable than I would prefer in a contractor. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Marco unless you're prepared to closely monitor the work and ensure that everything is done correctly.
