I've been going to Matt's on Mendon in Cumberland, Rhode Island for about 15 years, and there's a reason I've never gone anywhere else. Matt gives the cleanest fade haircut I've ever had...always even, always sharp, and always exactly how I ask for it. He also does a great beard trim, which saves me from trying (and failing) to keep it lined up myself. It's a true local barbershop on Mendon Road, and Matt treats everyone like family. The shop is clean, easy to get to, and you never feel rushed. You can tell he takes pride in his work, whether it's a simple men's cut or a detailed skin fade. This is a decent barber shop, but has it's issues with staff and quality. Let's start with the pros. It's clean it's well equipped, well decorated. I have found some of the staff to be pleasant. professional and polite. Others were catty and openly discussed things they didnt like about both staff and customers alike when the owner wasnt there. I have tried two Barbers there over the course of three haircuts. I have had mixed results. I found they didn't understand what I was looking for, so each time ended up with something slightly different than I hoped. The first two haircuts we're well done and neat, but not the style I asked for. On the last haircut, one side of my head was 3/4 of an inch longer than the other side. I decided to give them a chance to fix it. Bad idea. The owner came right over and appraised the haircut. Matt started by making me feel comfortable that I was corret to come in. That was not the experience when the stylist came over. He agreed that I was right to come in and that it needed to be fixed. He went to get the stylist who did my hair. She took 15 minutes to get over to me. When she did she ran her fingers through my hair and told me that it was good. "well, I can make it shorter for you if you want, but they're even on both sides." As she couldn't tell that there was an issue, it caused concerns. The owner saw a discrepancy enough to call the barber over to fix it. Attempting to shame the patron that they were wrong to come in and nothing needed fixing left a poor taste in my mouth. I decided it was time to leave. I don't judge companies by the mistakes they make. I judge them by how they handle the mistakes they make. In short, they are a shop where you MAY get a good haircut. I suggest that you are clear on what you want and check for evenness or stray hairs before you leave. read more

Fantastic service, friendly staff and an environment that is like stepping into an old time barber shop, with so much more character than the cookie cutter places in the local strip mall. I'm visiting the area from San Francisco, and on the recommendation of family who live here, I went to see Nichole for a haircut and shave. I'm always apprehensive about going to a new barber for the first time, but Nichole was terrific. She gave me a great looking haircut and beard trim, was detail-oriented without being overly fussy, and overall provided a terrific experience. Had a great hair cut - but barbers don't wear mask. Just not a place I would want to go back to - just a personal preference - so if you are okay with your barber not wearing a mask but being very welcoming and giving you a decent haircut - feel free to go in. Just not for me. read more

This place is great! Staff is welcoming and friendly. Came in on a Tuesday(for me) and Saturday for my son, they had 5 chairs going on Saturday! I've had some of the rotating barbers here over the years, but I've been having Matt cut my hair for the last year or so and he's definitely the best there. Never had a bad cut, and always friendly and welcoming when I go. Only a 2 minute drive from my house, but I'd still come here even if it were hours instead of minutes away. Came here for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised how well my cut went, considering I have a pretty complicated hairdo I think. Was looking for a decent barber shop for years since I moved out to this area and seemed to be disappointed barber shop after barber shop with some very traumatic results. I even settled on getting me hair cut at Super Cuts for a while. Thank goodness for Yelp! I was doing some research again and saw Matt's on Mendon get pretty great reviews. And since it was pretty close to my place, I thought I would give it a try. There's plenty of parking in the back. The shop looks very new and newly renovated but still has that classic barber shop vibe to it. It's a huge space with plenty of room and plenty of chairs in the waiting area. I was surprised to see several people already there waiting only minutes after opening but I suppose that's a good sign. I ended up getting my cut from Matt who seemed very professional and did a great job cutting my hair. He listened to all of my requests and took the time to really cut my hair the way I wanted. In the end, I was very pleasantly surprised. I was more happy I finally found a place nearby to get a great cut! Will definitely be coming back here many many more times. read more

I have know Matt for a couple years and have had each one of the barbers cut my hair. Matt is the best in the shop but the other barbers get the job done as well. There isn't usually much of a wait which is great. The new shop is incredible - not your average barber shop. The conversations are not your typical barber shop - there is no bad language because there are all ages of kids and adults in there. The shop itself is awesome, very cool old school feel and very friendly atmosphere. Most importantly however; Matt is the best barber, bar none. He is able to get people in and out pretty quickly without ever rushing a haircut. He can help with suggestions on the style of cut or how to deal with "problem spots". He's even great with the straight razor to line up your beard which seems to be a lost art. I went back to Matt's on Mendon after being away for a few years and I was not impressed at all. I asked Chris for a haircut and a shave and while the haircut itself was good, he spent the majority of the time talking to his buddy who was next in line after me using all sorts of profanities that would make even a sailor blush. Needless to say, I thought he was extremely unprofessional and it was quite unbecoming of a place that calls themselves a "vintage barbershop." Then came the shave... Let's just say when I walked out of there I looked like I had been in a West Side Story-esque knife fight. He cut me in seven...count them, seven...different spots. I think it's time for me to find a new barber in the Cumberland area. read more
