Dr. Matthew Crawford: Professional, Thoughtful, High-Quality Surgical Care. I just returned from a post-surgical annual checkup with Dr. Crawford at Austin Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Dr. Crawford performed partial-knee replacements for both knees in 2016 and 2021, as well as arthroscopic treatments on both knees that gave me several good years leading up to those surgeries: You can't delay arthritic damage forever! The surgeries changed my life from the first days: From mobility-limiting pain and restrictions to a quick recovery (no heavy meds needed after the first day), no subsequent pain and great flexibility ranges, aerobic and strength exercises 3x per week, hikes, etc. to this day. Dr. Crawford's surgical skills were stellar, something that you sort of expect, but for these operations is not all that common. I'd recommend him for those skills alone. What continues to set him apart from previous surgeons (and many caregivers in general) was demonstrated again at this checkup: Professional-yet-friendly (a tough balance for surgeons, in my experience); funny; respectful of my time; respectful of his young staff; and willing to spend extra time explaining what the options are, what to expect, what to watch out for. His PA Mandi (apologies, I can't remember her last name) is helpful, organized, knowledgeable, empathetic. The "front office," the first face for the center, is staffed with competent, efficient professionals. The entire organization is customer-centered and helpful. Highly recommended. read more

Dr Crawford treated me for a post op emergency surgery I had to have out of state from a hiking accident (so many drs turned me down to treat me). He was amazing to assist my post op treatment after I got home and got me on the right track for recovery. Because of his great treatment, when I hurt my knee a year later, I went back to his office. Turns out I tore my ACL. He offered several solutions and we decided on cadaver doner material. Excellent care, excellent surgery. All of this was in 2012 and 2013. To this day, my surgery has held up. I'm back to running, swimming, biking etc. I highly recommend Dr Crawford and his team! read more

I would stay far away from Crawford. He's unprofessional. I have never written commentary on anyone's services, but I'm going out of my way to ensure others know about him and his staff. I have been a trial lawyer for 20 years and work with hundreds of athletes and gyms through my entrepreneurial ventures, and I have yet to experience such unprofessionalism. I am an active person, and when I had a knee injury, I was recommended Crawford through my MDVIP doctor. The long waits in his office were a troubling sign, considering many of the patients were angry in the waiting room. In my first two initial meetings, Crawford was curt and not listening, likely due to the other people waiting after me. Every time I've been there, I've noticed people angry in the waiting room. I signed up for a meniscus tear surgical procedure and asked for a knee brace, and they made me pay over $100 for the knee brace even though they explained to me that these knee braces were typically given out after surgery. I met with Crawford less than 20 minutes leading up to my surgical procedure. He explained to me that it was unknown from my MRI how much of the meniscus would be needed to be shaved until he actually got into my knee. He offered me no alternatives and dismissed my explanation that my knee was recovering well and could have avoided surgery. On the day of the surgical procedure, I expressed to him that I would not take acetaminophen (because of the toxicity it causes to livers), and he assured me that he would provide me alternative pain killers. I went in early Friday morning for the surgical procedure, and when I awoke, I was sent home with acetaminophen. I called his office Friday afternoon around 3pm, but got an automated phone message. I left a detailed message asking for different pain killers. I have not yet heard back from them and went post-surgery with no pain killers that I asked for. I got an automated phone call to book a follow-up, and in a week, I went to my appointment. I saw many angry patients in the waiting room. After waiting over an hour and 10 minutes, I realized I could have been there for another hour before seeing him, so I walked out with my scans of the surgery. I'm uncertain as to whether he was avoiding me, but he was dealing with other upset clients in the waiting room and I must have been a low priority. I never got a call back nor an apology. I have no idea how my surgery went, but my knee doesn't feel any better. I see absolutely no redeeming qualities to Crawford. read more

My team at Westlake Orthopedics, Dr. Matthew Crawford, Physician Assistant Adam Decker, and Valencia, are exactly that...my team. Over the course of the last 5 years, I've had both minor and major knee surgery, and even though that involves pain and rehab, it's absolutely been worth it for me. They've guided me through surgery and recovery with kindness and concern, and most importantly, helped me return to the activities I love. Dr Crawford listened to me, and tailored my treatment based on what I wanted to accomplish; continue working my physically demanding job. I also wanted to ride trails and hike big mountains in my free time. I can do that now. I value honesty, professional expertise, and compassion in health care. I received it here. read more

Never refer anyone overweight to this doctor. All he talked about was the paleo diet, why it is proven, what fish to buy. He did not give me a diagnosis, a plan, or offer me any help for my need today. His bedside manner was not just poor but missing all together. He did not see any of my cues as being emotional, that I've signed up to work with a personal trainer, that I was uneducated about my body but wanted to learn. I was prepared for some straight talk and weight discussion. But he had no conversation with me about the knee... except that he thought it could be a worn or torn meniscus. He did not discuss x-ray, invite me or let me ask questions, didn't tell me what to do as far as movement, ice, PT, wear a brace or not... anything relevant. He said we would talk after I got an MRI. I was dismissed due to my weight. As he left the office my jaw was on the floor and he asked someone "so should we pick Vail or Telluride". Dr. Crawford was recommended by a friend at work. I knew he had arthroscopic surgery on both his knees and my right knee had not responded to physical therapy. I was able to call on Friday and get an appointment on Tuesday. Dr. Crawford's staff took several X-rays which Dr. Crawford reviewed with me. We decided on arthroscopic surgery to clean up the meniscus and sometime before retirement I would likely have a partial knee replacement. I had the arthroscopic surgery on the following Friday and I am returning to work on Monday morning. I did all this without reading anyone else's review. This morning I read Dr. Crawford's review on health grades and here. Dr. Crawford's score on health grades, based on 15 responses, is very positive. My experience was very good and in sharp contrast to two earlier reviews on Yelp. Not every doctor is a perfect match to an individual, but as an engineer I want someone to give my facts, options and specialized opinion to assist me in my decision and I got that with Dr. Crawford and my surgery was done promptly and with the expected positive outcome. read more

My experience with this Dr. Crawford was poor and even worse with his assistant. I came in after falling and had bone sticking out front of my knee. That is still there today without a diagnosis! He had 4 days to return my call before hel left on his skiing trip over Christmas. He didn't phone me before he left or return my call after. If I knew how to post a picture of what my knee looks like today I would and you would be shocked! After my second appointment I his office for the initial injury he sent me home and said "take Ibuprofen". Ibuprofen will not do anything for a bone sticking out of my Knee! Joan O I had complete knee replacement with Dr. Crawford at Westlake Hospital summer of 2017. He told me he'd see me before surgery but didn't. Plus I did not see him once In the hospital after surgery. Adam, his PA, saw me once 2 days post op. He told me there were some blood test problems and I'd probably have to stay a little longer. Later that day a nurse came in and said I was being released. One of my adult children were with me almost all the time. I got a bill from a Dr. Letitia Phalen for $761.00 for in hospital visit. I NEVER saw her. I called my insurance company and Medicare and Dr .Crawfords office. Adam was going to talk to Dr. Crawford. Never heard about from him.The hospital said maybe she just looked over my records while I was in the hospital. They said she was a traveling doctor that goes to various hospitals. I was given 8 different numbers for her, but finally tracked her down myself. She said she'd look into it. I asked where her office was located, she gave me an address. The address was a private residence!! She never answered my calls again. Shortly thereafter I got a notice that my insurance paid a Dr Smalley, the billing code was changed! Her address was the same residence as Dr Phalen. I called and miraculously the 2nd doctor answered. i asked if she or Phalen could have seen me at night when my kids were gone. She told me they Never Bill without seeing the patient in person. I told her I never saw either of them and wanted them to return the $761. to my insurance. She abruptly hung up on me. Old and recovering from a painful knee surgery I just dropped it. I started physical therapy at a very well respected PT office and had wonderful Therapist. Had a prolonged treatment, probably 60-90 appointments. I was faithfully going sometime 3x a week. My range of motion didn't improve. I told my pt the knee still hurt. My knee would Lock and it was so painful. She told me to see Dr. Crawford. He told me he considered the surgery a failure and he might have to do it again. (Or scrape the underside of the knee cap. I thought it was replaced) I wanted a second opinion so Dr Crawford went out in the hall a I thought faxed a referral note to a friend of his. He said the other doctor's office would call me. After 3-4 days I called the other office. They said they received nothing from Crawford. Dr. Crawford's remark was something like: you know office staff, they don't make much. My daughter said that's it for Crawford. My other knee was so painful by this time she got me an appointment with a very well respected orthopedic surgeon. I told him I didn't want a 2nd surgery on left knee. We decided maybe if my right knee was fixed we could see if the left knee would respond to more stable walking. Right knee was done may, 2019. After about months of physical therapy (compared to over 1.5 years with the first) I had nearly complete range of motion. I had healed and felt so much better so soon . My physical therapist was amazed at the difference. This is becoming a novel so I'll wrap it up. I saw in other reviews about the long waits so very true. At first I thought it was because he spent so much time with each patient. Not so!! I mostly saw Adam and visits were usually pretty short. When I got printouts of the doctor's notes, the appointments were never as long as he recorded and not always accurate as to what went on in the appointment. Adam left the office while I was still seeing Crawford and now Dr. C is at a different practice. I left some messages for him and finally he called me recently. I said I had some questions and wanted my records(he said call Westlake office. I told him I had the right knee done and the surgeon said the prosthesis on my left knee was a little large(per the x-rays). Crawford said he had to go, he had called between patients. I could make an appointment and he'll talk to me. I said do I have to pay to discuss and ask questions about a failed surgery. He said "we don't give free appointments and hung up on me. I was really hurt as I liked him at first, but it was evident the relationship had changed after the surgery was done and all the pre and post appointments were over and no 2nd surgery would happen. Was really unhappy with my experience with Dr. Crawford and Westlake Orthopedics. I came in for some mild elbow pain and he gave me a very cursory review, then said he could give me a steroid/anti-inflammatory shot in the elbow. No discussion of other options and it felt rushed and high pressure. I decided to get the shot, so he gave it to me and told me to come back in 2 months. I came back in 2 months and still had pain, and all he said was, "I can give you another shot if you want, just tell my nurse what you want to do". When I started asking questions he said "you're overthinking this - just tell the nurse whether you want the shot or not" - and then he walked out. This is after he was an HOUR late to see me, and never mentioned being late nor apologized. And then rushed through our appointment and walked out when I was still asking questions. I found the rest of the staff rude as well - the front desk staff was rude every time I was there, and the nurse was unfriendly as well. I have since sought a second opinion from another Orthopedic Surgeon who was shocked Dr Crawford gave me a shot so quickly and never mentioned Occupational Therapy as an option. Dr. Crawford strikes me as the epitome of an arrogant, uncaring surgeon who believes surgery cures everything and isn't interested in milder, safer treatment methods. I hated this guy and feel like I lost several months of potential healing time to his poor attitude and care. When I finally went to another doctor, I was right back where I started. I went in for leg pains and got no resolve, which I understand can happen. He just seemed a bit indifferent and unwilling to think about what it might be. I had multiple visits to "check in later" to see progress. Either way, every time I was there I waited FOREVER. Even when I was the first appointment in the morning or after lunch. It was ridiculous. In Sept of 2007 I was having shoulder pain, after MRI and x-rays was informed of the spurs and the tear in my right rotator cuff, after hearing the options I chose surgery to fix the problem. I was so pleased with the outcome, when I had problems with an old injury to my knee I sought his opinion again. We tried shots in the knee that temporarily helped then scope surgery. Over the next five years as he had already warned me it got to the point of being bone/on bone and I needed full knee replacement. So in June of 2012 I had him do the surgery. Through the entire process I was informed what the treatment would consist of and the recovery time. I seem to be doing even better than most because it hasn't been 2 full months yet and I am walking, have almost full range of motion with little or no pain, depending how far I walk and shop. The out patient physical therapist says I have no further need of therapy I am already good to go. After my check up with Dr. Crawford today I was so happy to show him how well I have healed and felt I was even better than I thought my outcome would be. It has been so long since I walked without the constant pain. His PA was always very helpful as well as his nurse and even the front desk. I would and I have reccomended him to friends and family or anyone that has these types of problems. I was so pleased with him and his staff. They are truely miracle workers in my eyes. I was referred to Dr. Crawford by a colleague for my finger pain. I had been to a couple of other Orthopedic doctors in the past and felt like my appointments were rushed and my concerns were not heard. From the moment I entered his office I felt that his staff was caring and kind. After explaining my symptoms and concerns, Dr. Crawford made me feel very comfortable and I left with a clear understanding of my condition and my treatment options. He was very knowledgeable and I would definitely recommend Dr. Crawford to my friends and family for any orthopedic condition. read more

I am 75 and keep forgetting to slow down, so have fallen twice and was treated successfully by Dr. Crawford. I liked the physical therapist he sent me to as well. I just saw him a third time, because I had run with a dog I was caring for, causing unbearable pain in my knee. He surgically removed debris in the knee and advised that I needed injections for the arthritis in my knee. Everything Dr. Crawford has done has been successful, I am no longer experiencing pain, and he cautioned me to keep moving to avoid the possibility of a knee replacement in the future. I always felt welcomed and never felt rushed, with everything explained carefully. One time I arrived to find Dr. Crawford had just been called away to operate on a broken hip, but that is to be expected. I have been pleased with his office staff each time. They were so apologetic the time Dr. Crawford was called away, and one time I called to say that I didn't want to drive over there, because accuweather showed I would be driving through a thunder storm, and they were understanding and set a new appointment. First of all, the M.D. designation is not correct. He's a D.O. I had him do meniscus and MCL repair. Never heard from him after surgery. I had to plead for pain meds. Said he needs to "CYA". His assistant/intern, heard all of this. Finally, after almost begging, he surrendered to my plea. I was VERY disappointed with his lack of any "bedside manner". Borderline arrogant in my opinion. Funny that a patient did hear from Crawford and it was to tell him to pull his review or hear from his attorney. After experiencing a great deal of pain after surgery, I returned. He wanted to give me a weekly shot for 3 weeks every 6 mo. for a very long time. It's a shot that is offered once every 6 mo. I determined this after doing some of my own homework. He never offered that even though it's MUCH cheaper. I feel that they have a self serving set up that allows for one stop shopping on their "campus". So, I went to another doctor, an M.D. with which I have been really pleased. A one visit procedure avoided untold expense and time than Crawford's recurring shots. I would not recommend him, period. Many M.D.'s out there can handle my issue and needs, I've found one good one. read more

while in the waiting room filling out paper work, I over heard Maria an employee of the clinic arguing with a patient regarding the deductible. Maria stated that their office didn't work with patients regarding the deductible the office expects the full amount before surgery. Maria then got off the phone and continued to bash the patient to the staff out loud where all of us sitting in the waiting room could hear. I was appalled . I asked one of the employees if what Maria was telling the patient on the phone correct info. I was told by the other employee that the office would work with us regarding deductible. I saw the dr. and waiting to schedule with Maria, she again began to tell me that the office would not work with me and that the full amount needed to be paid before surgery. not just the deductible but the other 10% !!!!!!!! am of those who only write reviews as a result of incredibly good or incredibly bad experiences. This review is the former as I could not be more pleased with the quality of care Dr. Crawford provided to me. I am admittedly a bad patient and prefer as little medical intervention as possible. When I broke my wrist, I was told by another orthopedist my only option was surgery. Troubled by this prognosis, I turned to Dr. Crawford for a second opinion; he was recommended to me by a friend in the sports industry. Dr. Crawford thoughtfully reviewed my x-rays and gave me treatment options in line with my desire for a nonsurgical path. While Dr. Crawford explained there was an easier and perhaps more effective means of treating my break through surgery, he was considerate and respectful of my wishes. He provided a high level of care and gave me the outcome I desired. His knowledge and bedside manner are equally impeccable. I would recommend Dr. Crawford without hesitation to anyone in need of an orthopedic specialist for any reason. read more
