I had begun to exhaust all of Yelp's top pizza spots in the South Bay and as such, had started to explore their options on the Peninsula list and Mateo Pizza was one of them. The description of "pizza with Turkish influence" caught my attention and I decided to try them. I was really tethering on giving this place five stars versus four stars. I will start with the reasons why I was going to give them five stars and then move on to why I ended up giving them four. Although this place advertises as New York style, I would more accurately describe their pizza as a mix of New York and Neapolitan with even a little bit of standard American mixed in it. The pizza was definitely tasty but their Lahmucun was even better and definitely delivered on the "Turkish influence" aspect. Their desserts (which are generally not something you think about ordering at a pizza place but I ended up ordering a few because they were homemade and looked tasty) were also delicious. The reason I knocked off a star is because when it came to the pizzas themselves, I really expected a lot more delivery on the Turkish flavors especially for a place that advertised itself as being Turkish influenced. Besides the desserts and flatbreads, the menu was a pretty standard pizza menu with only a couple options having Turkish ingredients here and there. In fact, even taking out the Turkish aspect, the overall menu looked relatively basic and not super innovative compared to other pizzerias. Additionally, I live in Mountain View and for a place that's reasonably far to get five stars, it needs to worth the drive and unfortunately, I didn't necessarily feel that way about Mateo Pizza. I do have to add that while the staff is super friendly, they don't speak much English. I try to always order over the phone (to avoid third party fees for the restaurant) but you are probably better off ordering online with this place. As other people have mentioned, there is not much room to sit so this pizzeria is definitely more of a takeout spot. Overall, if I lived in the area, I would definitely consider Mateo Pizza as a great neighborhood pizza joint. read more

I ordered a medium half-and-half pizza for $28.99, and it was absolutely delicious. The olives on the veggie side were incredibly flavorful and fresh. The staff here are super welcoming and provided excellent service throughout our visit. The restaurant was pleasantly quiet during lunch hours, making it a perfect time to beat the crowd. Coming at this off-peak hour also made it much easier to find a parking spot nearby. Ending the meal with their heavenly dessert paired with a cup of hot tea was a truly divine, classic culinary treat. While we were waiting, the server offered us Turkish tea. Came out very hot for the cool night. Pizza was freshly baked and had a very crispy and thin crust. Flavorful pizza. The bergamo was my favorite. The balsamic glaze gave it a nice sweetness to contrast the savory Turkish pastrami. The Stracclatella topped it off with a cheesy gooey texture. Offered us baklava for being first time customers. Perfect treat to end with as it was not too sweet. It had strong nuttiness and layered crisps. I was looking for a quick bite late night and ordered a Lahmacun. Elias greeted me very warmly and explained the menu. The Lahmacun (which the menu describes as a kind of flatbread)was well seasoned and a little spicy - they suggested eating it rolled up. We ordered 2 large pizzas all half and half such that we could maximize trying flavors. I personally liked the truffle mushroom pizza and the Turkish pastrami pizza best! Moreover, the pizza was tender and the cheese pull was strong! The owner was super kind too. As we wound down our meal, he also offered us Turkish tea which helped to cut the greasiness and also gave us a small plate of Turkish delights which allowed us a sweet bite to wrap up our meal. We Turks are very fond of Turkish flat bread (lahmacun). I've tried it at many places, but this is the first time I've had one in America that tastes this authentic. I'm writing this 0-star review as a loyal customer who used to order here often and even left a 5-star review just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the management showed the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I placed my order through DoorDash like always. Later, I received a call from the restaurant claiming I had already picked up my order, even though I clearly hadn't. When I denied it, the person on the phone (Elias) called me a liar, said they had it on camera, and then hung up on me. I was shocked, so I drove there myself to clear things up. When I confronted Elias in person and told him it was me who placed the order, he finally admitted he would make it. But at that point I was so angry, insulted, and disappointed that I refused to take the food and walked out. I have never seen such unprofessional, disrespectful behavior from a restaurant. They take it back inside, throw a couple arugula leaves on it and *whole* pepperoncinis...not even sliced. I tried the Bergamo pizza. This came with pomodoro sauce, mozzarella cheese, Turkish Pastrami, stracciatella cheese, balsamic glaze, and arugula. This is made with fresh cheese and the combination of flavors was really good. The dough could use a bit more flavor. I would have loved a pop of flavor in the crust but overall, the pizza seemed very unique. It had some arugula too and a little bit of balsamic glaze. It seems they have a good variety of sauces. It is made to order and they have a variety of pizzas that offer delicious Turkish flavors. The service was nice. Really hate everyone calling their restaurants "New York" style pizza. This isn't even remotely close to New York style. I'm a chef, but not a pizza expert, been to ny 4-5 times, tried making ny style myself in my crappy apartment and gotten closer than this restaurant. Is it good pizza? Yes, definitely, but it's generic California pizza not thin crispy crust. The only places I've found on the peninsula for somewhat accurate New York style pizza is Speederia, and Giovannis NY pizza in sunnyvale.
