My review solely pertains to their brunch menu/servings. I've had the pleasure of holding group events for brunch in the past that wowed everyone but this past occasion was anything but that. Their regular menu had about 4 brunch items listed and then they had a grouped menu; you could pick an app and meal, of which they had several listed including the 4 on the full menu. We ordered the cinnamon buns which were 3/$14 and grossly overpriced for what was served. They were brought out on (what I call) a bbq tray. They were small, cold, hard, with bare any icing. The last time we ordered these they came out piping out with more servings in a skillet pan. Whatever these are now - don't waste your money. No one even wanted to eat the last one that's how underwhelmed we were. If you order one of the meals on the group menu a la carte (ex steak and eggs which isn't on the normal menu) you'll end up paying more which our server didn't tell us. My hangover burrito was flavorful but I wasn't expecting beans and rice on the side; the description didn't clarify that so I thought it was all wrapped up. On top of that they missed one of the orders and the guest had to watch everyone eat for 10m. There was also something going on with the heat bc literally everyone in the restaurant kept their winter coats on. We all come to the consensus that this is just not a brunch spot anymore. Maybe if we had the bottomless mimosas our tune would be different. I'll try them for a dinner one day but that's a big maybe. read more

Love this place! Had a nice date night with the wife. Beautiful weather outside so we opted to sit outside on their patio. Two servers working the area and did well coordinating between each other as when we sat down a couple other tables sat themselves. Our serve Zach greeted us and introduced himself with great energy! He was good to ask all the typical appropriate questions and asked if we needed any drinks. My wife had their Peach Lemon Drop and I went with their Frozen Prickled Pear Margarita. Both were tasty and that Lemon Drop had quite a heavy pour which while great, needed a little sprite to make it drinkable. We both have been here before and knew what we wanted, we both got their sliders and opted to get fries and onion strings. Their onion strings are INCREDIBLE. Sliders came out slightly pink as requested and were delicious! We also had their arancini as an app which was so cheesy and delicious! Shout out to Zach for keeping us updated on our food and drinks as the bar was busy after happy hour ended. Great service and we will definitely be back again. Thanks again to Zach and Gabe for holding it down outside on a busy night!!! read more

This place is way too expensive and isn't worth the poor quality food. I got a pork belly pizza which was some $14 and it was way too sweet and just sub sub sub par. I could get a large dominoes pizza for half the price and it would taste amazing. You're basically paying the rent for these guys to sit in the Mosaic district. read more

The food tasted good but I felt like it was overpriced. $19 for a chicken sandwich and $24 for a glass of chianti.

I had called to make a dinner reservation thinking it would be simple and easy, however I couldn't even get someone to pick up the phone. The first time I called I had waited for about 2 minutes on the phone and no answer. I continued to call back several times with no answer at all. Located right next to Jinya in Mosaic, it's a great location with tons of parking. I've been here for both lunch and happy hour. Both experiences were really great! The place is clean and pretty large, we were sat right away both times. For lunch I ordered the wood-fired lamb sandwich and to my surprise, it was really great! The chickpea fries are pretty interesting, I've never had them anywhere. They have a very interesting texture to them. The sandwich itself is great as well! I recommend getting it if you're in the mood for some Mediterranean food. I also tried black bean veggie burger for HH. It's not on the HH menu but still good and a good price nonetheless. Next time I definitely have to try the pizza that they're popular for! read more

First visit to Virginia...out of town-ers or just call us tourist. My husband and I absolutely fell in love with this place. We had stayed in a hotel just a couple of feet away. Where we stayed, there were several restaurants around us but every night we come crawling back to this particular one. Their sliders were superb and pizza are so delicious. We sat on the outside patio every night dining and people watching as we eat and sip on our drinks. read more

My waiter Santiago was so accommodating to my dietary restrictions. He's an awesome waiter !!

Went in for a drink and to order some appetizers. There was absolutely no one in bar. No one at bar, no bartender, no hostess....no nothing! A match made in heaven! Absolutely amazing pizzas (get the Spicy Meatball!), but definitely make a reservation unless you want to wait in chaos. I came on a Friday night, and the waiting area was swarming and the line was out the door. Wait time was an hour, which was too long for me - I thought I would die of hunger. Luckily, it was worth it. The ambience was beautiful and romantic, and the restaurant was spacious - I almost got lost in the maze. Service was friendly and warm, and the food was outstanding and also very reasonably priced: $60 for a party of 5. I ordered two pizzas, both half and half, so I got to sample 4 of the flavors (I'd definitely recommend doing this). Each pizza was cut into 6 slices and had thin, crispy crusts which were slightly charred and really brought out the flavors of the pizza. I had the Chicken Pesto, Q Special (chicken, mushrooms, red peppers), Spicy Soppressata Salami & Wild Mushroom, and Spicy Meatball. All four of them were bursting with flavor from the combination of the freshest toppings and zesty sauces. My favorite was the Spicy Meatball, which came with huge house-made spicy meatballs on the pizza as well as crispy BACON that sizzled under the cheese. The meats really made this pizza perfect - it was so savory and absolutely delicious. The thin crust made me feel like less of a pig, even though I was literally eating bacon. I also had the Italian Sausage Rigatoni, which came with generous chunks of sausage, a sprinkling of romano cheese, peas, and garlic bread on the side. The sausage was so flavorful, especially with the zesty tomato sauce, and I couldn't get enough of it. The garlic bread was so warm and comforting, with a perfectly crispy crust and a gooey inside that melted in my mouth. Come to Matchbox for outstanding pizza and pasta in Mosaic - a high-quality fine dining experience. read more

if you like thin crust pizza, this is the place for you. however, overall all the pizzas doesn't have much flavor. artichoke dip was great, but i wouldn't come again for food. there are better places elsewhere worth your money and time. our server kept rushing past our table so we weren't able to ask for water refills nor did they notice. they also did their food check nonverbally (just a thumbs up) and walking by (not even stopping by the table properly). they also bombarded us with information on drinks the second we sat down. my friend also a beetle in their salad, but since the server was rarely seen, we weren't able to tell them until the end of our meal. i would also like to say the manager told us it was a lady bug although we knew it was definitely a different type of beetle...i know the manager is meant to keep the peace but we didn't appreciate the gaslighting. read more

underwhelmed but not horrible. the waitstaff was friendly. the arancini was tasty and a decent starter. the cream of crab had a good flavor but the consistency was very thin and the soup came out lukewarm which was disappointing. the scallops were small and dry/overcooked and unseasoned. the creamed corn was flavorful, however i think that's not good that the creamed corn outshined the scallops. my brother ordered the alfredo which he enjoyed. it's possible seafood just isn't their strong suit. i can see why this was the only restaurant without a wait time on a friday night. read more

We sat at the bar for brunch. I ordered a Bloody Mary and the Bloody Mary burger. The drink was nothing spectacular and was missing the dill pickle garnish that should have been included. The bartender wasn't exceptionally busy and was very attentive, although I'd wished she had been more upbeat and friendly. The food, however, will probably keep me coming back for more. The burger was perfectly cooked to medium and the flavor was fantastic. read more

DO NOT USE DELIVERY! They use a third party delivery service that cancelled our order after it left the restaurant. Food is good and so is staff but please do not use them for delivery. read more

I had previously gone to their pentagon city location and loved it, so I'm not sure if it's just this location or their quality has declined precipitously, but my meal here was awful! Our pizza was so bereft of ingredients that one would think the cooks have their wages docked if they dare give the solitary piece of meat on a slice a companion. They didn't even bother to cover the whole thing in cheese, so our low energy pizza's primary ingredient was bbq sauce. Sad! The service was also horrendous, despite it not being particularly busy; we were there about 75 minutes and the waitress didn't once fill my water. She would also disappear for fifteen minutes at a time - I presume she was in the back helping the manager count and recount the pizza ingredients to make sure those loose cannons making the pizzas weren't cutting into his profit margins. Avoid. read more

So my coworkers and I decided to be spontaneous for once and go to Matchbox for happy hour! Well, let's just say, I'm glad we went! The atmosphere, food and service was amazing! I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, so our waitress DeLonn, gave us some really good recommendations. She totally vouched for the Jalapeño margaritas so that's what we tried. It was so good! My friends got burgers and I had the cheese pizza. The burgers looked good and juicy, but I am a pescatarian, so I just admired them from a distance. The pizza was so good it left me wanting more! The food had such great quality and we cannot wait to return! read more

Came here for a quick meal. I heard a lot of buzz about their sliders topped with fried onions. I was intrigued and have been wanting to try and see what it was all about. Ordered the sliders and bowl of cream of crab soup. The soups was well balanced. Although my husband thought it was a little bit salty. It was generously filled with chunks of crab meat. I think i had a chuck of crab meat with every spoonful of the cream soup. Solid tip: flavors were enhanced and made 100% better by adding some of the onion straws!!!! If you dont know, consider yourself woke! The sliders were amazing and lived up to the hype. The onion straws were not oily nor salty with a drizzle of parmesan cheese. The sliders were cooked slightly pink inside... only way to cook meat imo. The slice of pickle made the taste balanced. I of course added the onion straws in between the patties and totally ignored the ketchup. I wanted to taste the purity and quality of the meat. It was awesome and juicy. We never order soda but today my husband was craving for a fountain Coke. I asked the server for one. The server stated that they try to cut down on straws and gave use paper straws. Eehhh! Just a simple suggestion. If places want to get rid of straws, please improve on the size of the ice chunks. It was really annoying to have such big chunks of ice when youre drinking something sans straws. Overall, we had an awesome and satisfying meal today. read more

Matchbox was a perfect spot for our party of five on a chilly December night. We had a cozy booth which was plenty of room for the five of us and our pile of coats. (Did I say it was a chilly night?) Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and drinks. We were eating light: two small pizzas, a salad, a burger, and an appetizer. I was not very hungry so opted for the three mini burgers for my entree and found it to be a "just right" serving. The order came with a huge serving of onion straws. They covered the plate and almost overwhelmed the mini burgers. The only snafu with the meal was that DH ordered a Bistro Burger and instead a Bloody Mary Burger appeared. He did not want a fried egg on his burger so sent it back. It took a few minutes, but the order was corrected and DH was able to enjoy his meal with the rest of us. Matchbox was quite busy on the weeknight we visited. Seems to be very popular and a solid addition to the casual Mosaic restaurant scene. read more

They have one of the best pizzas ever!!! I've tried a lot of different things on the menu and to be honest, there is not 1 thing I can name that I didn't love... been here for brunch and lunch and dinner. If you do go for lunch you have to try their steak and egg. It's one of the best. Their burgers are so delicious and tasteful!! Pizzas are amazing! You won't be disappointed. We had gone to matchbox on Saturday with a party of 11 and what we got was the worst customer service ever. First of all it was hot in there and stuffy because their air wasn't working and we weren't even notified of this issue before being seated. We had to wait a whole hour before the waiter got our order and then all of the drinks were dilute. She must have forgotten to get them from the bar. The silverware never got there and our food arrived. We had to call the manager but too was of no help. Overall worst experience for a restaurant that has been around for long and in this area. Poisoned me with non gluten pizza. Threw up all day the following morning. Do not recommend for celiacs whatsoever.

Friday night and this place was backed. It was a 30 minute wait so we sat at the bar. The staff very helpful and knowledge. My husband has a gluten intolerance and they guided us with recommendations. He has the baby back rib and I had this house burger with fries and of course a beer. I didn't have room for dessert since their corn bread was so filling, fresh out the oven. The following with with the server and not feeling rushed was perfect! Update - Matchbox has a happy hour from 3:00 to 7:00 on weekdays (some of the menus say 3:00 to 6:00, but they appear to have extended it). They offer a few beers for $5, wines for $6, and cocktails for $7. Even so, I would generally recommend skipping the drinks. They are typically very light on liquor and heavy on the sugar and mixers. For $7, I might get one, but even then, they are typically too sweet. And I'll be that they do put some alcohol in there, but there have been times when I really couldn't tell for sure. For $11, skip them for sure. Stick with wine and beer here. read more

We attended a movie next door and decided to come to matchbox for dinner after. The Saturday evening crowd is plentiful, so come expecting a wait. It's my moms night out for the first time and I was disappointed that we gave up our bar seats to sit at a table in the bar area only to find out it was hostess seating only. Excited to try this new place out, I came here on a Monday night with my girlfriend. I tried making reservations on OpenTable and it said that there were none available for 2 people at 8PM which was weird because I called the restaurant afterward and they had plenty of space. The inside is very spacious and nicely decorated. There are different matchboxes displayed on each table (ours was Hello Kitty lol) as the name would imply. I really liked the bar set-up and the atmosphere. However, they turned down the lights a little after we were seated and it was too dark for me. We ordered the Matchbox Meat Pizza, Prosciutto and Fig Pizza, and the Mini-Burgers. Mini-Burgers (3 for $9): The delicious mini-burgers were the perfect sized appetizer. You can choose how you want them cooked (we got medium rare and that was just right for me) and have the option of adding cheese for $1 extra. They also came with really thin onion fries! I would highly suggest getting this appetizer, especially if you're in a big group! Matchbox Meat Pizza ($14small/$21large): We got a small Matchbox Meat and this was just OK in my opinion. It's like their meat-lover's version. It was not bad, but nothing special. Matchbox pizzas are very thin and I believe there is none to very little sauce. As a result, I thought that this one looked a little greasy. Prosciutto & Fig ($14small/$21large): The Prosciutto and Fig was a great balance of salty and sweet. It reminds me of the popular 'bacon-wrapped dates' appetizer. It was a very unique pizza, but I feel like people would either love it or hate it. Fortunately, I loved it! Service was very attentive. The host/hostesses were very friendly. The only thing that I didn't like was that I felt our server tried to upsell too much. I told him I wanted water but he was adamant about me trying a craft beer or cocktail. Then he seemed disappointed that we were too full for dessert. Overall, I'm happy about this new addition to the Mosaic/Merrifield district and I will be coming back soon! read more

I made the mistake of ordering something semi-healthy here -- the wood-fired lamb sandwich w/ chickpea fries. The only thing wood-fired was the pita/flatbread, the lamb was tender, but completely bland. It only tasted good if you dipped it in the accompanying tzatziki, but the chickpea fries were delish. I would totally ask for a basket of it instead of your usual fries. The S.O. nailed it by ordering the Matchbox Meat pizza. I like how the pizza comes out fresh, thin, and doughy highlighting the generous toppings and ingredients. Must-Order: The Cinnamon Rolls. They make them in house and serve them straight from the cast-iron skillet. They're super light and airy and not overly sweet. Considering the quality, it's bang for your buck at $6. Service: Friendly and knowledgeable. Their credit card machines were down so they had to manually write a receipt for us which delayed service a bit, but otherwise speedy with the food considering we came during lunch on a Saturday. Decor: This location is HUGE compared to the cramped one in Chinatown (obviously 'cause it's in the 'burbs). The bar is massive as well. Tip: Stick to the burgers and pizza since those are Matchbox's staples. read more

Even though this place does not have Happy Hour specials, It's a cool spot to hang out after work. On my first visit, I ordered the Bison Burger. It was too big to handle (yep, I said it) but the mess it produced was worth it. My burger was seasoned very well. It made cheating on my "diet" worth all the calories. The sandwhich was served with a side of the biggest onion rings I have ever seen. Aside from the visual presentation, I didn't enjoy the onion rings. If I were to order again, I would go with the steak fries. This location is actually much bigger than it looks. This place has been open in Merrifield, VA for a while now but I never actually have the time to try this place. I have heard many mix comments about this place so I wasn't sure if i should try it. My boyfriend and I decided to give it a shot anyways since we never been here. The parking wasn't hard to find for us since we went on a sunday night around 7:30pm. This place is right next to the theater and near the coffee shop. It is hard to miss it. We were greeted by the host and hostess and they told us we have to wait for around 20 minutes to 30 minutes. The waiting room is small so we were standing around since it was packed. While we were waiting, we looked at the menu to see what we should order for dinner later. Oh boy, the menu was long shape and the front was hardwood kind, it was kind of heavy to hold also. The menu didn't have that many choices either and it is kind of pricey, so if you are looking for meals around $12-$18, this place is definitely not for you. We didn't have to wait for 30 minutes at all, we were called to our tables after 15 minutes of waiting so I was definitely very happy about that. The set up inside the restaurant is definitely different than other restaurants around the area. It is definitely very spacious and designs are different and cool. Our table was all the way in the back which was quiet for us to enjoy our dinner. Our server did took a long time to assist us and even forgot to ask if want anything for drinks. I ordered "match box pizza" ( small only, since big one was too big for me, we did looked over our table next to us for the large size pizza). My boyfriend decided to try the "lamb sandwich". I was amazed by the gourmet pizza, it was delicious that we both agreed we will come back to try another kind of pizza. His lamb sandwich was okay, the portion was definitely small for the price and it came with chick peas and it tasted weird to us so we didn't even finish it. Once again, our server didn't even refill our water for us. I had to chase him down for that and I had to literally ask for everything (water, napkins, utensils and even the check). Overall, I definitely enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the design of the restaurant, but I was disappointed at our server. I expected to be better than that. next time when I come back to try other type of pizza, I do not want to run in the same service like i did last time. read more

We came by on a Friday night and the wait was about an hour. They have a really nice bar with a diverse selection of beers and wine on tap. If you have never been to a matchbox before, the pizza is thin crust. They have a wide variety of standard pizzas or you can make your own. There are two sizes available 10' personal or 14' large. The large is perfect for two people and comes with 8 slices. Here's a tip....if you want to try different kinds of pizza, ask for half on one side and half on the other side.....they encourage it. We were able to try half fig and prosciutto and half meat lovers. Both were fantastic. Normally, I never order fig and prosciutto but based on all the reviews on yelp, I was curious. I was pleasantly surprised and loved the sweet and salty taste. Another tip: Call 30 minutes before you plan to arrive and put your name on the list. This will save you a lot of "waiting" time. read more

Decided to check out this new spot with friends a couple weeks after its dinner opening. Because there was a long wait time for a Thursday evening (at least one hour) for inside seating, we decide to get seated right away in the outside patio area. Our server was pretty helpful in guiding us towards popular menu choices (of course the mini burgers) and took good care of our party. We ordered up some drafts, and it's nice that they have the proper glassware for each beer. We went with the 9 mini burgers, the soup of the day, and the panzanella salad. The soup looked thick and luscious, the salad was well balanced with flavors (I think their homemade croutons were cornbread), and the mini burgers were spot on. The onion shoestrings on top are probably the best part really. They are pretty addictive. The burgers themselves were pretty good as well, though they may have dried up a bit fast in the cool evening weather. All in all, this is a great addition to the Mosaic that should continue the Matchbox tradition. read more

Good service, pizza, beer, and weather on the patio = happy camper. I was psyched to see that Matchbox opened a location in the new Mosaic District; I'd been wanting to try it for a long time, but hadn't had an excuse to be near one of their other locations. I finally had a chance to stop by, and had a very pleasant meal on the patio on a beautiful afternoon. The beer list was impressive, and included some local-ish micro brews (Devil's Backbone and Starr Hill, both by Charlottesville), as well as my ultimate choice for a warm evening; Allagash White from Portland, Maine. The beer came out fairly promptly, and the food didn't take long either, but the waiter didn't lurk or otherwise distract me from enjoying myself. The small pizza was a good meal; enough to fill a hungry eater but not so much that I felt overly full. In fact, I even managed to eat a couple of donuts from the coffee and donuts dessert (which, incidentally, was big enough to feed four). After finally trying Matchbox, I'm even happier that they opened here, and I'm looking forward to my next visit to try some other beer, food, and dessert options. read more
