The food and service were great. We sat at the bar with Pepe, who was kind, courteous and great at his job! We will definitely be back.

Our server Taylor gave great service! Good place to bring kids. And they have some good salads

Both appetizer and main course came out before we even received our drinks. We complained and they brought them back five minutes later, we still hadn't received our drinks and they had put the salad under the hot lights so my salad was wilted. We gave up and just ate and eventually our drinks came. I ordered the spicy tuna tartare tacos. They were supposed to come with Siracha mayo and guacamole. Instead what I received was 3 mini crispy tacos with some ? tuna absolutely drowning in siracha. Nothing else. To his credit, the manager came by and apologized and offered a free dessert. But I had literally lost my appetite. read more

5/5 for the food, 3-4/5 for the service. I ate here after running a half marathon on 5/7 & it didn't disappoint. The Bloody Mary was perfectly spicy & the cornflake crusted French toast was way better than I expected! The server seemed very new but he was also training someone so that was kind of a mess. Not sure if they're really short staffed but they took a very long time to check up on the table, get refills, etc. maybe it was just an off day for him! read more

Brunch in merrifield without a line! Also great for happy hour. We've been here twice and brought our baby both times. The restaurant is very accommodating to families. The first time, we wanted to go to Ted's Bulletin for brunch, but we were deterred by the wait time (45+ minutes). This one had no wait and some delicious brunch entrees like chicken and waffles, not to mention creative bloody Mary's. We came back for happy hour, and they were doing $1 pbrs at the time! They also had a collection of good brews for $5. The food on happy hour was excellent and cheap. Sometimes their food is too salty, like the onion straws, but mostly it's great. read more

While we've been to Matchbox before, this was our first time at this location. We were here around 5 p.m. on a Saturday. Already, a lot of tables were occupied but we were seated immediately. This Matchbox is like the others in the sense that seating is cramped. We were so close to the couple at the next table that they ended up engaging us in a long conversation. We didn't mind as it was very interesting :) With Matchbox, even though we hadn't been to one in a few years (you know---so many restaurants, so little time) we still gravitate to the same menu items. This time was no exception. After all this time, we both remembered their pomegranate martini and how much we enjoyed having it. Thus, we were still pleased to see that it was still on the menu. Like in the past, we enjoyed this drink quite a bit---the flavoring is nice, properly balanced and not too strong. We started out with 6 sliders and chose mozzarella for our cheese. They certainly lived up to expectations. Matchbox does sliders quite well. With sliders, some restaurants overcook them making them very dry. Matchbox gets it right---they are served medium rare to medium with cheese and a dill pickle slice. Plus they come with a very generous portion of onion strings which are crisp and tasty. Next, we got a small oven dried tomatoes + mozzarella pizza. Matchbox does a good pizza with a thin slightly crispy crust. This time, however, the sauce had some zest to it---we didn't recall it being that way in the past. Still, it was well seasoned and didn't overtake the pizza. I asked our server about it and he said all their pizza sauces are now like this. He added that they are very careful when it comes to making the pizza dough and the sauce to the point where they've been known to throw out batches that aren't done properly. All in all, an enjoyable meal. We were glad that we had dinner here and would certainly go again. Service from start to finish was excellent. Like many restaurants, it gets loud. I wish that there was better spacing between the tables as it makes getting in and out rather awkward but, it is what it is. Before the tip, dinner cost $59 + change. read more

I've been awaiting the opening of Matchbox since I learned that there would be a location in Mosaic and was finally able to try it out this past weekend with my boyfriend and Rob E. I made a reservation via OpenTable to avoid the wait and we were sat immediately after we checked in. They are currently only open for dinner, but hopefully they'll be open for lunch and brunch soon! For those who haven't dined at the other Matchbox locations in the area, it's American style dining with a menu filled with different types of salads, brick oven pizza, fresh seafood, miniburgers, and much more. They have also have a great drink selection, from "girly" to "manly" cocktails (that's what it really says in the drink menu!), beers, and wines. I helped myself to a glass of cabernet sauvignon because it would be a great touch to the pizza I ordered as my entree. We started off with the mini burgers (all with mozzarella for an additional $2), which come in increments of 3, 6, or 9 and come with onion straws. The bun was soft, the meat was juicy and succulent, and the cheese was perfectly melted... it was my definition of the perfect cheeseburger. The onion straws were crisp and light. I ordered the spicy meatball pizza. I'm pretty picky when it comes to pizza because 1) all I ate when I was an adolescent was microwave pizza, and 2) I've been spoiled with Brooklyn style pizza after my many trips to New York and couldn't seem to eat a pizza the same way again -- but when it comes to pizza at Matchbox, it's ON POINT. I loved every bite of it! On the other hand, the service needs to iron out a few kinks. The hostess took us to the wrong table, It took more than awhile to get my glass of wine, (I also heard complaints from the table next to us about how it took so long to get their drinks from the bar as well) and our server wasn't very attentive throughout our meal. Since they've just opened, I'm sure they'll be great within the next few weeks or months. read more

Came here to celebrate a friends bday and we had a great time. We were warmly welcomed and our server was on point. He was friendly, had a good sense of humor, and constantly refilled our drinks without us having to ask. Our food came out in a timely manner. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Restrooms are neat, clean, and it smelled like cinnamon in there. The food here is delicious. The sliders were a great way to start our meal. I could have eaten these as my main course. The shoestring fries were thin, light, crisp, and well seasoned. Nothing was overly salty. The slider buns were fluffy yet held the meat patty well. The meat patty was seasoned perfectly, juicy in the middle with a nice sear on the outside. Their pizzas are awesome. You can choose two kinds and they will put both your choices on one pizza for you. Sweet! The prosciutto and black mission fig was a trip to flavor town. Sweet and savory goodness. The sausage in the Matchbox Meat Pizza was also out of this world. The dessert trio is great for sharing. The sorbet comes from Dolcezza. The brownie was smooth, warm, and gooey. The vanilla ice cream was creamy, not too sweet, and had a lovely natural vanilla flavor. The homemade whipped cream and chocolate topping was prepared so well. The house made doughnuts were cinnamon sugar deliciousness. Dip it into the espresso kahlua creme and your good as as gold. The Apple Crisp was an immediate hit at the table. Loaded with warm slightly crisp and gooey apples. Topped with cool vanilla ice cream. Yum! It gets incredibly packed in here. I suggest making reservations if possible. Everything was fresh and prepared well. Can't wait to come back! read more

I dig that all the dining parties with children were segregated into the booths by the bathrooms in the back left. It left free reign of the bar area to us pottymouth adults. Julio was an entertaining server. Waits weren't too bad considering how busy they were on a gloomy Sunday night. My Fire & Smoke cocktail was interesting: the peat I love in Laphroaig married with a faintly silty cayenne-thyme syrup... not terribly spicy for heat fiends, just short of genius enough for a booze purist to repeat. The chickpea fries that came with the lamb sandwich were damned tasty, I'm determined to replicate this at home. I saw the shrimp & grits app and chose to upgrade to an entree portion of it. Pretty good! Diced andouille in just enough butter sauce to moat the creamy Tillamook cheddar grits at an even ratio, with nicely fried basil leaf and two more shrimp than app serving for only $6 more. I'd happily get it again, but the app size will leave room to try their entrees and black bean banh mi. read more

I like the atmosphere. Was like sports bar meets pizzeria. Wasn't very busy. No real greeting at the front door. Felt like I was waiting for an Uber and wasn't going to eat there. Seated a few minutes later and service (Elijah) was very slow. Drinks took a while. No drink refills following the initial service. Salad came out and pizza minutes later. They tried to clear my salad about 10% in. Just bad pacing. Server basically ghosted after that. Pizza was OK. Caesar salad too. Both worth trying. Three employees at the host stand when exiting. No thank you, no come again. With all the good food in Mosiac they really need to step up service to compete. Can get an average pizza at 100 places. Would go back, but maybe in several months after I try everything else again. Prediction this will be 2.5 stars by the time it hits 1,000 reviews. read more

The ambiance gets a 10/10 and the food plating also gets an A plus. The food was tasty but not the best I've ever had 8/10. I got the cinnamon buns it comes out in a skillet with 6 sticky buns. The cinnamon buns were warmed but not hot. I think they were a little under cooked. The flavor was on point though and frosting. I also got the steak and eggs. It was filling, tasty and the perfect portion. Next time I will get it with cheese. There also needed to be more spices on the steak. Thankfully I was able to add salt and pepper and it was tasty. I will definitely be back for the pizza and relaxing environment. read more

Dear Matchbox Food Group, I have enjoyed watching your company grow and find myself a regular at your Merrifield establishment. I hope that you guys continue to grow the brand as I am a strong proponent of local brands (i.e., Five Guys, Perdue Farms, Under Armour, etc.) pursuing national/global recognition. If it is not too much trouble, could you feature a Korean-inspired pizza on the menu, as I think that would be amazing! Also, this review would auto-update to "Woohoo! As good as it gets! 5-stars" from the moment a slice first enters my mouth. I am making this suggestion in lieu of trying the Crispy Asian Short Ribs. Please private message me if you have any questions or would like additional input or ideas. Kind regards, One Happy Customer read more

Came here on a Saturday night and I am a huge fan. Really can't wait to go back. They have great brick oven pizza, nice beer selection on tap, and surprisingly they have wine on tap as well. I heard that's the new thing! The decor is sleek and rustic, plenty of wood. The lights are dim. Large high-top seating, intimate tables and community tables too. Ordered 3 burger sliders. They come with cool fried onions on top. Also had the pesto chicken pizza and a glass of wine. Delish. The pizza was a pinch too oily for my liking. Still delish and great presentation. Wonderful customer service. The layout is amazing. Pick up a pack of matches on your way out too. read more

I've ordered take-out at matchbox before, but this was my first experience dining-in. Hostesses were accommodating when I had to push the reservation back and we were seated right away. I ordered the cream of crab soup and matchbox meat pizza. Soup was surprisingly delicious- large lumps of crab at the bottom and the temperature was just right. Pizza was decent- wasn't very hot but it tasted alright. We had a large table so perhaps ours was finished before the other dishes and waited under a heat lamp. The service was a bit slower than I would've hoped. Overall, it was a good experience but nothing that sets it apart from the many other restaurants in the Mosaic District. read more

Hey, this place was way better than I thought it was going to be! Went here after a work function for lunch with the team. We were seated promptly, and the menu offered plenty of options for everyone. Service was great, and the refills flowed freely. The food came out quickly, all the orders were correct except for one person's who asked for burger toppings on the side but they came on the bun anyway. I had the sausage and onion pizza, which also comes with roasted red peppers. There are two sizes, a $15ish small and a $24ish large. I got a small to myself, looked to be about a 10" pizza, just right for me. It filled me up without being too full and was totally delicious. The crust was a littler thinner/soggier in places than I like, but if you know that's the type of pizza it is going in and expect it, you won't be disappointed by the overall taste. The only real ding other than them slightly messing up one of the orders that I have is that they overchar the pizza crust a bit in places. I know the wood-fired char look is their "thing," but it was definitely just burnt to a crisp on a few people's slices. Like straight up charcoal. Not some place I'm ever going to get a pizza craving for, but if I'm in the area again looking for a meal, I'd certainly enjoy going back. read more

matchbox - "Sausage and onion" pizza. Really tasty. Comes also with roasted red peppers. - Pizza Near Me - Fairfax, Virginia

I feel likes the food has gone down in quality but the only thing i absolutely loved was the mini burgers. We got the chicken Alfredo which was strangely red and watery. Not very flavorful and the chicken texture was strange and a very dry. I'm pretty sure it had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. When you think of chicken Alfredo don't you think of a thick white sauce? Well this was not the case at all. We also got a margarita pizza and specifically said no pepper and it came out spicy. Also my Diet Coke was just water. My first sip I just thought I got a weird sip but it was like that the whole time. We were in a rush to eat and leave so we didn't have a chance to complain I fear the food would come out slow. Our server was nice and attentive Overall the bill plus tip came out to be over $100. I won't be coming back here anytime soon unfortunately. read more

I came here for happy hour with a couple of friends. The service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and offered some good recommendations in regards to their cocktails. The food came out pretty quickly. 1. Artichoke dip- the bread was absolutely phenomenal. It came out soft and warm. The dip was good as well. 2. Ordered the margherita pizza- it was pretty standard. I like that it was thin crust. 3. Calamari- I felt like this dish was on the small side but still very good. Solid place to come for happy hour. I love that it's until 7pm.. and they have a pretty good selection of drinks and food specials. read more

I love Matchbox. There are tons of vegetarian options, and the vegetarian options are flavorful and delicious. Here is what all I have tried: - Mozzi Carrozzi: Delicious. Initially, I thought this was something like bruchetta, but its totally different. This is some sort of bread that is fried, stuffed with mozzarella, and served with tomato sauce. I am not a cheese person at all, but this appetizer was soo good. - Black Bean Banh Mi: OMG - this is DELICIOUS. I highly recommend you try this out. I was expecting a black bean burger, but this is not a burger. The black bean patty is freshly made in the restaurant (not something that is frozen and heated). Its served on a ciabatta bread along with some salad. I chose to get Chickpea Fries instead of the salad. The Chickpea Fries are amazing. This is my absolute favorite at this restaurant. - Fire & Smoke Pizza: Now I cannot handle spicy food, but for some reason, I always tend to order this pizza. Yes, this pizza is that good. Of course I drink water after each bite and mouth is on fire, but I just love this pizza. If you can handle spicy food, I highly recommend this pizza. - Veggie Pizza: This is decent. Honestly, I would choose the above options over the Veggie Pizza, but its good to have a vegetarian pizza on the menu for people who want pizza and can't handle spicy. The ambiance is great. In the evenings, this place is packed and reservations are hard to get. I love their food and variety of veggie options. Thumbs up from me!!! read more

Should be a 5 based on service alone. Love the fact a Matchbox is closer to my place... And without the crazy long waits too. We had excellent service. Our server, Adam either really loves his job or loves working with people because it reflected in his service. We wanted some late nite bites. We opted for the 9 sliders with assorted cheeses and a large pizza. The sliders were perfect, medium... They really hit the spot. Our large pizza was 1/2 onion sausage, 1/2 pesto chicken. It was good but the pesto chicken was a little dry to me... Kinda cardboard like. As for desserts we ordered the churros, PB dessert and vanilla ice cream. The churros was kinda fluffy, but good. Not your usual churros(dense) consistency, and the PB was umm hard? Matchbox always has a good vibe. We will definitely come back. read more

I went recently for an early dinner with my boys. The food was good but the service was terrible. Even my 9 year olds commented on the lack of attention and the ridiculously long waits to get simple items such as condiments. One of my kids is a picky eater and he was told they had honey mustard sauce for his chicken tenders when he ordered them. The tenders came out without honey mustard and when he asked for it he was told they didn't have any. It seems small but it's a huge deal to a picky eater. The restaurant as a whole was not packed but everyone was seated in the bar area leaving the bartender to service the people sitting at the full bar and the high tops in the bar area. This place needs to hire more servers. read more

Came here on Friday for their happy hour (3pm - 7pm, Mon - Fri). And decent options for pizza, appetizers and drinks during this time. Went for the Matchbox meat pizza, sliders, spicy mini meatballs and their cheese fries. If you're a fan of thin crust pizza's, you might like this place. As far as the pizza goes, it tasted good. A bit on the salty side but that's probably because of all the meats that came with it. Lol Sliders were tasty. Almost like they knew how I wanted it since it was cooked on the medium rare side. The meatballs we're juicy, but not spicy like how it's described ok. We could have done without it, but at least I gave it a try. I'd come back again for their happy hour. It's a decent spot for those that are craving thin crust style pizza if they're in the area. read more

I had an amazing time. The bartender, Chase, had never met me before, but helped me choose the perfect Cabernet (Annabella from Cali), and was willing to substitute my red potatoes side for the side salad on the sides menu. He gladly modified my dressing to Ranch and added Cheddar for me. I know that was all high maintenance of me, and don't encourage crazy modifications, but his attitude was great and willing! The GM, Dan, was so respectful and professional and came by to say hello, as well.. Service was great, very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Started off with the calamari. HIGHLY recommend. The spicy jelly that comes on the side is very tasteful and the calamari is fresh and hot. Ordered the pepperoni and banana pepper pizza, large.
