I'm a woodworker, not a novice. Found this business through Yelp and it looked like it had good inventory. I knew what I wanted, but I didn't know how this business facilitated selecting wood. Went to the cashier to ask for guidance and found them to be seemingly uninterested and unhelpful. They liked talking to each other at the counter. An odd business that doesn't understand customer service. Nor do they seem to be very enthusiastic about their products. They had a good variety of wood, but I wasn't impressed with some of the cut quality. I wish their management luck, the place has good potential. Just need to retrain and rehire staff. read more

Watch your charges. I wanted to buy a couple of blocks of wood for my wood turning lathe. I picked out two blocks, one was marked $14.60 and the other was marked $22.90. When I approached the counter to pay for them, the man behind the counter said that would be $44.65. It should have been $40.57. I gave him a $100 bill and he started to give me the change. I said wait a minute, how could that cost $44.65? He said the block of wood that was $14.60 was mismarked and it was a 30 dollar piece of wood but he would give me a discount. I said that was not fair and the wood was clearly marked with a red marker at $14.60. He said sorry but he could not sell that one to me at $14.60 because it was not marked correctly. I said, "Give me my money back". He did and I left the store without purchasing anything. The terrible thing about this is he never said I am going to have to charge you more for this piece of wood because it was mismarked. He just did it, charged me, more hoping I wouldn't notice the upcharge until I left the store. I called the manager (Richard) and told him what happened and he said."How could you expect to pay for a block of wood at such a low price." It was like he was blaming me for their mistake. Was I supposed to come to the counter and tell him that I think I should pay more for this block of wood because it was too good of a deal. Crooks. They didn't honor the posted price because there was no honor. I won't be buying anything from these people again. If you can't trust men in little things then you can't trust them in big things. read more

Ask for help and get nothing. I am very new to woodworking and I asked for help. I said, "I know twhat I want, but don't know your process." I was told to look around the showroom and figure out what I wanted then he would help me. I guess he wasn't listening because I just said I know what I want. It isn't fun being new to some places and being ignorant and not even knowing what questions to ask. So I was a good little customer and walked around but no boards measured the measurements of the dimensions needed and I was just annoyed by the lack of interest in wanting too help me or teach me in the basic process of buying wood there. I went to Lowe's and was able too find the pieces I need. I know, sub quality, but better quality than the quality of customer service I received at this Mastercraft Another reason they are don't "deserve" more stars is their hours of M-F 8-5. Banks are open more than this place. Mastercraft; a place for master craftsmen, unless you are one of those others kinds of craft persons. You can go to the big box stores. read more

Greatest customer service ever! I was looking for a particular type of wood that nobody else had it so I went here. I asked the guy up front that I only needed a tiny foot long sample so I could do a finish sample for a client. They only had a long plank like almost 16' so he sad just go to the back and talk to the guys in the back and they'll take care of me. I went back and told him and he said "Sure no problem!" He cut a couple of feet off a bent warped board and I went back to pay for it at the front. The guy up front said, no charge, don't worry about it. I was floored. Not your regular lumber yard. This indoor space is full of any wood you could possibly need to finish a project. They carry a wide variety of trim styles. Their service is great. They were out of stock of the trim I used 7 years ago in the house, but with my sample they ordered it and had it for me the next day. Just visited today to pick out wood for our new dining room table. There is a huge selection to choose from. Our friend who came with us is a regular here and he helped to guide us. Richard was very helpful in showing us the really pretty myrtle we ended up picking. They are storing the wood for us until Monday when we will pick it up to start our project, super helpful. Been here a few times to buy lumber/plywood for DIY projects. In the front they have a selection of various species including some exotics, mostly rough or s2s boards. Didn't pay too much attention to the trim stuff, but there was a lot of them, and s4s looked to be only in red oak. In the back warehouse they have the sheet goods. Let the forklift guys know what you want, bring your pickup around to the door, and they load them into your bed -- easy. Okay, the prices are 'higher' but so is the quality. 3/4" cherry plywood was $110 a sheet. But it's 5 ply with each face ply being about 1/8" thick of hardwood. Try Home Depot, and you're likely to get a 7 ply warped sheet with paper thin face ply of something less nice than cherry. read more

I love this place. There is a certain primal itch that's scratched just by walking through the doors. They always have a great selection of all the common American hardwoods as well as a great selection of exotics. There's always a pile of something special as well. It's inspirational just walking through the aisles and handling the product--makes the creative juices flow and prompts new project ideas. Rude. There's a basic lack of interest and no offer of assistance by staff behind the counter. This isn't a one time experience. My husband is a retired contractor and our best guess is that he didn't appear to be buying large quantities so He wasn't worth their time. He is still doing carpentry but will be taking his business elsewhere. For anyone heading west on 80 We highly recommend making a trip to Auburn Hardwoods. read more

I emailed Rich asking for a simple quote with the materials and quantities all listed. Instead of simply stating that they do not deal in framing lumber of any kind he rudely says to try again in a few months and after I pressed him, that it might take a few days to get a quote. I said that would be great and proceeded to wait 13 days without communication back. After I email him, he says "I am unable to quote this. We mainly deal in hardwoods not framing grade lumber." A simple glance at my quote and he could have told me right away that they do not deal in the lumber I need, instead of wasting my time waiting for a response. read more

Really great place to shop in Reno for specialty wood. Picked up a order of cherry plywood for my husbands woodworking project and they got everything correct and loaded it for me plus they even asked if the half sheet was to be cut 2x8 or 4x4 which is really unique. Price was also cheaper than Meeks for cherry plywood. read more

Large stock of domestic hardwoods in 4/4 and 8/4. They carry a few exotics, burls for wood turning, hardwood dowels and millwork. If you own a planer and edge joiner this is your store. Using board footage as a comparison for Red Oak, Mastercraft's prices work out to 50% less than the big box home stores. Granted, you are not getting a board that is finished on 4 sides, but if you own the above mentioned tools, you can cut your cost in half.
