Fantastic vibe and service!…read more I've been considering a new barber for a few weeks. I read all the great reviews as well as the not-so-great ones, and I am always impressed with leaders who take accountability for the customer experience. Ryan's comments made me feel secure in trying out the shop. Making the appointment was seamless. They use a common scheduling app called SQUIRE, and I was able to get an appointment with Ryan. The shop is aesthetically fantastic. Very old-school in design and decor, which I like. It fits perfectly in the neighborhood, which adds to the charm. The energy in the room, however, is something that I rarely see. The team and the customers are on an entirely different level of coolness than I'm used to, and the experience was terrific. Ryan and I hit it off right away in terms of him understanding what I was looking for, and he exceeded my expectations. He listens well and asks strategically good questions. The service was timely and a good value for the price paid. I was watching one of the other barbers do a masterful job on another customer, and I feel confident that whoever I see in there will make me look (reasonably) impressive!

How can it be that I'm the first person to review this place?!? I had to keep checking to make sure…read moreI was reviewing the right salon, because a find like this deserves some yelp-notification. My local stylist left town and after a couple of dreadful cuts, I started looking for a new salon and stylist. It's hard to start with a new salon & stylist. I was dreading the search. I'm a guy. I'm no hair expert & I don't know the technical jargon, so I'm not good at describing what I want. I'm also follicularly challenged (damn you x-chromosome). It's tough to find a decent hair salon that not only cuts, but also styles my hair so that I don't leave as Bad Hair Day Champion. Basically, I'm not going to go to barber shops or mall salons or any sports-themed salon (nothing wrong with them, just not for me). So how often do I ever feel excited about a haircut? Almost never. Imagine then how pleased I was to stumble upon 901 Salon & Boutique. It's in a house on W. Gray just East of Montrose. I don't usually care how fancy a salon is, but I like to see a space that the owner takes care of and looks like they've put thought and pride into it. This place is clean, bright, stylish and airy. The ambiance of the salon is very friendly and welcoming. It's also part jewelry boutique (more about that later). So I made an appointment, showed up, sat in the chair, and told Steve (the owner and stylist) to do whatever he thought would look good. Well, he proceeded to give me one of the best haircuts I've had in a long time. There was no tedious small talk, no "oops" moments, no inept directions required from me. He just did it, and did it well. It's unfortunate that a very short cut makes me look like I'm bald instead of merely going bald (yes, my vanity says that there is a difference!). Steve knew just how to cut my hair to give it a great shape that's both looks good and is manageable. He gave me an awesome cut that looks good in the morning with minimal effort, or can, with a bit of product, be fancied up for the evening. On the way out, my eyes strayed to the jewelry displays. I was in such a good mood from my reflection that I actually took the time to look at the necklaces (very unique - more jewelry store like and not your typical "salon" necklaces) and picked one up for my girlfriend. To say it was the best night of life ... well, not quite, but she was thrilled, and I was happy. I've been back there and have never left disappointed. I even had my girlfriend start going. She sees Lilly (I think Steve's sister) and gets her hair cut, styled, colored & highlighted - all of it. She loves it and especially likes the price and value.

They sculpt destiny. Every snip of the scissors is a conversation between artist and canvas. I'm pretty sure I heard angels harmonizing the first time I got hit with a fade here. My wife looked at me when I got home and said "who are you?" Not because I looked different. Because I looked like the man she always hoped I'd become. Carlos built this place, and whatever dark sorcery he's teaching back there, it's working. This man has assembled an entire roster of assassins. I've sat in multiple chairs at this shop over the years, and every single one of these barbers is cut from the same legendary cloth. You could walk in blindfolded, sit in any chair, and walk out looking like you were put on this earth to be photographed. I made the catastrophic error of going somewhere else last month due to a scheduling conflict. I have never known such betrayal -- and I did it to myself. That barber cut my hair like he was mad at me. Like my head had personally wronged his family. I spent three weeks looking like a wish.com version of myself. Never again. I would drive through a hurricane to walk into this shop. I would wade through floodwaters. I would cancel a meeting with the Pope. If they relocated to the middle of the Sahara Desert, I would simply begin walking. If you are reading this and you are not already in one of their chairs, you are wasting your life. Five stars. Would give six but Yelp is a coward.

I went for the full package: haircut with wash, paraffin treatment for my hands, and face, neck, and scalp massage. Plus, a hot lather shave with an additional facial massage. The result? My haircut is fine--not "$77 fine," but fine. It's not exactly what the associate and I had agreed upon, but passable. The pampering was pleasant--not Middle East spa pleasant, but pleasant. The shave, however, was not okay. Not just "not $65 okay," but "I do it better myself in front of the mirror" not okay. When I got home, I was greeted with: "I hope you didn't pay for that shave." The left side of my chin had a small patch of blood oozing (not much, but still--not $65 okay). My jaw still had noticeable stubble, as did the area under my chin. It didn't look tidy. The staff were very polite, helpful, and kind--though perhaps a bit too sales-oriented. For a total of $130, I expected more--especially in the delivery of their core services: haircut and shave. It's a pity. I really wanted this to become my go-to barber. But I'm still looking for the right one. 2 stars.

Light snacks, like cranberries and nuts are provided along with hot tea options, and citrus flavored water. The space is very nice. There are locker rooms with plush spa robes and complementary slippers. The locker room has two steam showers if you want to wash yourself after your massage. They also provide hair products to try as well as a Dyson hair dryer. I was definitely very impressed with the luxurious feel of the spa, however, was turned off by the receptionist who checked me in - her robotic, transactional nature was starkly juxtaposed against the warmth of the spa. I noticed she was the same with all customers so it wasn't personal but interaction with her was unsettling. I booked the 60min signature hydrafacial and the esthetician was welcoming and willingly customized my facial based on my requests. No major issues encountered but I noticed we started 10 minutes late and ended 10 minutes early so I thought marketing it as a 60min experience was a bit misleading. Also note the 60min Signature Hydrafacial does not include any hand/neck massages nor boosters nor light therapy so the $285 price was much more expensive than my usual spa. I will not return for another facial but may try massage in the future. We also booked pedicures and again the space is beautiful!! We were given a palette to select colors and the ladies were extremely friendly! My toes came out adorable! I found the seating to be very uncomfortable for a short person despite many pillows placed behind me for support so I honestly struggled to enjoy the experience but the space was very nicely decorated and clean looking. We were offered tea and snacks at the beginning as well. Overall, this was a very nice spa. I found it fairly expensive and overpriced, but I recognize beautiful spaces have a cost and that's what I should've expected in the River Oaks area. There is complementary validated parking!
