I realize it is somewhat juvenile of me to laugh at the name, but I can't help it. I also can't…read morehelp but be impressed by this new sporting goods store that just opened in Slidell. Located in the brand new Fremaux Town Center, this store appeals to my inner dude like only a sporting goods store can. Since I am an equal opportunity reviewer, I will first focus on the section of the store geared towards females: they have women's clothing. Now that we have that out of the way, on to my review. Hunting I was pretty sad when I realized Dick's doesn't sell handguns. There are few activities more badass and manly than perusing a fine selection of handguns. What they did have, however, was a giant selection of rifles and shotguns. There was no one working in that area so I couldn't fondle any, but the prices looked fairly reasonable, especially on some of the .22 rifles. If hunting birds or large animals is more your style, they also had higher caliber rifles and shotguns. As with most stores, shotgun ammo was available on the shelves with pistol and rifle ammo behind the counter. From what I could see, it looked like they had a good supply of most home defense and target ammo for somewhat reasonable prices. Even the .223 was decently priced (for 2014). In addition to the firearms, there was a large archery section, including what looked like an archery range. There was also a good selection of knives, machetes and even a tomahawk. If you are looking for survival gear, they have what you need. Camping The camping selection here was first rate. In addition to the tents, sleeping bags and camp stoves, they had an excellent selection of backpacking food. Anyone who has been backpacking will tell you that the lighter your pack, the easier your hike. Dick's had a large amount of freeze dried items which would taste funny, but definitely save weight. They even had astronaut ice cream which I must purchase whenever I find it. Don't ask me why, but I think that stuff is super cool. This section is also where I found a new folding chair. I am not sure of the official name, but it's one of those chairs that folds and stores in a bag. I am sure you've seen them at the beach, kids soccer games and Mardi Gras Parades. Well, for only $30, I got a brand new chair in stylish realtree camouflage. No longer will I be at the beach in a plain blue chair. Hell yes! The aforementioned sections are where I spent the majority of my time, but the store had plenty more to offer. I saw shoes, sports equipment, fishing gear, etc. It really is a one stop shop. The staff I encountered on the floor were helpful and friendly. My only complaint involves the checkout process. I am not sure if it was because the store is new, but checkout was painfully slow. Despite having three cashiers working the wait was far too long. Other than that, I loved the place. If you are in the Slidell area and like dude type things, check out Dick's. See, that is hilarious.

There is plenty of parking in their private lot both for vehicles and those towing anything. Inside the front door is not a sales area but you step directly into the parts and supplies store. They have pretty much everything you could think of and anything you could possibly need. It was well stocked and much more inventory and stock than my store back home that tends to be out stock on certain essential things. Not so here; the shelves and racks were full. I was able to pickup everything on my list and then some. I've always wanted an extra 30 amp power cord since one time I couldn't get close enough in an older state park. Steve's had a 25 ft cord that suited me fine. It was ten dollars more than ordering it online but there would be added shipping charges so I'm a happy camper. I'm bookmarking this place for next time because my daughter plans on moving back to her home state and I plan to visit yearly.

Evidently the last owner of the house donated the house and some of the land to the state for a park which is great. It saves the land for use. I came to tour the house. There is a lot of open ground between the rows of slips giving you a sense of open space. There is another campground section in the back where the boat ramp is with some space to park your vehicles with boat trailers. The facilities are well maintained. For example, the site directly across from me has a brand new picnic table which are more expensive than your average table since the entire frame is made from tubular metal to ward off termites. Each gender has three separate shower rooms available to them. Each room is lockable and comes with a toilet, a sink vanity, and a very large shower stall. The rooms are spacious so that parents can help their young children. There two sets of washers and dryers in that same centrally located building for the front campground. The rear campground has their own building with restrooms and showers. The dump station has a hand soap dispenser which is the first time I've seen that at a public campground. I camped in slip #26 which is located at the end of the row and has partial shade over half the slip all day long. The end of the row is next to the park boundary and on the other side is an old cemetery which makes for a quiet area buffer from any residences. After my first weekend, almost everyone else checked out and I had my row to myself. Located within the park is the historical Old Mill House Museum but tours were not available (mid June 2023) as they were currently doing repair work. There is a swamp trail boardwalk available for walking/hiking with periodic benches and a river view at one point. They have provided playground equipment and swings for the children. There are about 80 RV slips and all have water and power hook ups. There a half dozen or so with sewer hook ups. There is also a large tent camping area with no power hook ups. There are plenty of restaurants and grocery stores within just a few miles of the park in both Madisonville and Mandeville.

Needless to say I won't EVER buy here again..

Rack Room Shoes is a spacious store with extensive stock and shoes were, for the most part, offered at competitive prices. Although our visit was over the holidays, the store was not particularly crowded and a number of store associates seemed available. However, when my wife sought info on styles comparable to one she had found she had difficulty getting help from a younger employee, who repeatedly blew her off with comments that everything available could be found on the shelves. Checking out was an issue also, with a long line forming for a single checkout. An older associate, who was perhaps a manager, finally opened a second line, but it seemed clear that she was having to pull more than her share of the weight. Hard to find good holiday help, perhaps?

The only explanation was that the "computer told them to do that". Of course I disagreed. THAT MADE NO SENSE!. The cashier said that SHE WAS GETTING FRUSTRATED. She called the manager. He was no help either. It was simple math and common sense. Not rocket science. There was nothing I could do. What a rip-off! I work hard for my money. The crazy thing about this was that these people acted as if this was all ok and that I was being unreasonable.
