Maslowski Park opened today with a ribbon cutting. It's got a massive, handicap accessible playground complex, a large tiered amphitheater and bandshell, Glendale veteran's memorial, beer garden, and soon-to-be baseball diamonds.
The playground equipment is beautiful and huge. I don't have kids, so I won't be utilizing it, but I kind of wanted to! The rubber safety matting around it all is really squishy and fun to walk on... Perhaps if I had kids that wouldn't be such a novelty to me.
The amphitheater has no seating, but a tiered lawn with masonry on the edges where you can sit. I think they encourage bringing lawn chairs. It's also astroturf so the grass won't die from being trampled all the time. It's a really interesting set up that I haven't seen at a small park before. Concerts here should be pretty great.
The "beer garden" (Outdoor Oasis is the official name) is where it goes downhill. I guess with Estabrook and all the other beer gardens around, my expectations were too high. Really, it's a concessions stand that also happens to serve beer. There are only 4 (unmovable) picnic tables, plus a bunch of benches. There's a few folding tables and chairs inside the lobby area of the building, but those don't seem permanent. There's no real beer garden atmosphere to speak of. Just an indoor and outdoor window where you can get beer and simple food like hot dogs, nachos, ice cream etc.
It's run by Sprecher, which makes sense as a local Glendale brewery, but their beer is just so eh. Makes for great root beer floats, at least. You cannot bring your own mugs here, you have to buy their souvenir ones. I don't need another stupid pint glass taking up space at home. I prefer Estabrook's deposit policy. If I were rating just the beer garden, I'd give it 2 stars. Womp womp.
The park is also not connected to the Oak Leaf trail, which runs probably a couple dozen yards west of it, which is odd. But, if you're looking for awesome playground equipment, a great outdoor music spot, and eventually baseball diamonds, then this park is great. Just don't expect much from the beer garden. read more
