Having previously worked at the Mecca of Burgers (In-N-Out) in California and the fact that my sister is now a store manager for In-N-Out, I have to say Mary's is... AMAZING, OUT OF THIS WORLD, BEST BURGER IN... AUSTRALIA! The fact that Mary's is one the of best burgers and its tucked on a back alley under a red light with no logo just adds to the incredible journey this burger will take your taste buds on! Every thing about the burger, from the buns to the sauce is fresh and made the way you order it. My only complaint is that the buns need to be toasted a bit more, but then again that is a personal preference that I am sure next time I go they will have no issue doing for me. While all of us got burgers my dad (visiting from the US) got the fried Chicken, and it was up to par with the burgers! Perfectly fried and just the right amount of juiciness. Food There are chefs who are trying to change the burger game with novel combinations, and there are those who aim for the perfect standard burger. Mary's do standard greasy burgers, but amazing ones. The cheeseburger is hands down the best I have ever had. Venue The two-level venue is a bit hidden but not too hard to find, mostly due to the ridiculous queue on weekends. The (rock)music is very loud (debatable if it's too loud) but holding a conversation is still fine. There is usually a queue to the seating area upstairs, however it flows pretty quickly. As a bar and somewhere to start a night with a bit of food, I think this is a great option. Although we had to wait about 20 min to get in, then another 20 for a table, then our food took about 20 min. And was served with cold fries. The chicken wings were good. But the burgers were far off the quality as was what you would get in the states. Although I can see reason for the hype, as there is nothing like this in Sydney. About a month ago we thought we'd stop in "early" at about 6pm and see if w could get a table... NO DICE! The line was out the door. Completely ridiculous. We left. Tonight we rocked up at 6, just to give it a go, and got a table straight away. Walking out about 45 minutes later, the line was again, literally out the door. As highly as I rate this place, I'm astounded people can be bothered waiting??? I mean theres nowhere to sit and have a drink, its a stand up line and you have to just like... stand. And wait. Mary's Newtown is a hipster's delight. Head town Mary's street - past Kelly's Courtyard and you come to a passageway. If you're lucky, there's a bouncer out the front managing the queue. Otherwise you'll just have to guess you're at the right spot and head on in. Important note: you can't order food unless you have a table. This is a pretty shitty rule when they let you in *before* a table is actually ready, but if you keep an eye out something will come up eventually. Each time we've eaten here we've forgiven their hipster tresspasses, as we praise the gods of Potato & Gravy. The gentle men and women at the bar are delightful to interact with, but have a strict mode of operation: order your drinks first, then your food. There's a huge selection of beers and spirits - even Four Pillars Gin which recently only came out as a Kickstarter reward. I didn't come here with high expectations cause with high expectations it's just that more devastating when you have a final product and it's not what you expect. But the burgers were awesome. The bartenders and waitress where so nice. The burgers reminded us of in-n-out it was unbelievable. The French fries were actually better than the ones you get and in-n-out cause they're crunchy. If your in the area, looking for a bit to eat, looking to hang out with friends. There should be not second thought. Come here. Only reason why I couldn't give full stars is mainly cause the crowd can be odd sometimes. Additionally, they forgot our order and we had to wait a full hour before we got to eat. But it was all great cause we got the meal for free due to the mistake. We ended up giving the waitress a tip cause we felt they deserved it cause they noticed how long we waited. The burgers are hands down the best in Newtown. We were lucky to arrive both times when they weren't as busy. The tip is to go straight upstairs to the seated dining area. I find that the food came faster when we were eating up there. If you're waiting for your takeaway, this place has a serious selection of craft beer from around the region. Ask the bartender for the beer of the week. My fav was the Mary's burger which was super yummy (but one which my doctor wouldn't approve of.. There's a price with all good things in life) The ambience is hipster-ish and it's popular amongst the locals. This is a posh take on McDonalds (burgers)/ KFC (fried chicken). They're both nice, though I wouldn't be racing back for them. Mash and gravy and trashcan bacon are both good, if not mind-blowing. Crowded on a Tuesday night, with a line-up at 7pm. Completely charmed by the wait staff and bartenders and I was really amused by my Bloody Mary with bacon and a slice of processed cheese. Seriously. Had an amazing Australian Pinot Noir. At $60, this isn't a cheap place for wine (and that was one of the lower prices). Unexpectedly blown away by the fried chicken, as tender and juicy as could be with a great crust. I do not think the burgers are the best in town as some say... but they're pretty good. As a total package with a hot vibe, great food and cocktails and good wait staff, it's pretty awesome. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that the acoustics are terrible. Mary's is my favourite place in the whole wide world. I have reasons.... 1. The security guy out the front was cool and nice. We spoke about Taronga Zoo and our favourite breeds of dog. Yay. 2. The beer is good, ALSO it's served by mega hot babes who wear Mariachi El Bronx tops! I chose the Young Henry's Pale Ale and it's delicious and fun. 3. I ate a cheeseburger and some fried chicken and I'm my happiest self. The food is too good. 4. THE SOUNDTRACK! The playlist is jumping from Beastie Boys to RATM. It's bad ass. 5. Firstly you might need a pair of night vision goggles to navigate the darkness that is Mary's and maybe a marker to add to the humorous graffiti found all over the building. The menu is very small but in the most perfect way! Every item on the menu has clearly being perfected down to a delicious meal. The Mary burger is a tasty example of simplicity sometimes being the best, a basic burger with a nice sauce. The fries are about the only lacklustre part of the meal, they aren't bad by any means but just have nothing special going on. Best of all is the music though, a spectacular soundtrack bouncing between death metal, classical music and then great 80's hits. I could sit all day just enjoying the tunes. If you have the time to wait as they don't have a reservation option available it is well worth it. read more

Delicious! Best burgers! I've been to Mary's about 7 times. Each time I have brought someone new with me. I have converted a few people now the burgers aren't massive which suits me perfectly. I am a cheeseburger fan and this is the best cheese burger I've ever had ever! I've tried the marys burger, the cheese burger and the fried chicken.... All yummy! The queue looks daunting but I've never lined up for more than 20 mins and if you're in the line up on the stairs inside you can get your friend to grab you a drink while you wait for your table. The waiters are fun, they occasionally dance... The music is loud and ranges from hip hop to death metal. The building use to be a STI clinic... you won't regret a visit to Marys! read more

There's a lot of hype about Mary's. The best burger in Sydney is a big call. You could easily walk past the entrance and not realise this place even existed. Make your way past the bouncer and follow the noise until you're inside. The place looks very cool. We took a seat up stairs and had our order taken pretty quickly. The food rocked up within a few minutes. Burgers and fries served in baskets. The burgers can only be described as a kind of posh version of maccas. The texture is very much maccas. BELIEVE THE HYPE! Mary's is the bomb diggity! Word on the street spoke of this mythical burger and bar joint in some back alley of Newtown. Hidden bars in Newtown? That's a lie! It's not. It's a beautiful reality. Mary's is located just behind Kelly's down Mary Street that connects King Street to Campo Park. It's a little hole in the wall joint that you'd only notice was there thanks to the beefy security guard standing out front (who's actually a top bloke btw). Inside it's toasty, some combination of dirty and sultry vibes, dimly lit and pretty loud. This place does attract hipsters but you don't really notice because you're having such a good time. The burgers are to die for. I'm not kidding. If you don't try a burger while you're there you're a chump! And the extensive cocktail menu is plastered ona huge chalkboard on the wall. Everything is delicious. There's so much to choose from and there are even cocktails that come topped with fairy floss and popping candy. Yes, popping candy! The only downfall of Mary's is that it's obviously popular so if you don't get int early you'll be forced to stand or wait in line for ages. But it's worth it. I heard so much about this place so had to check it out. The location was really hidden but it made it special and kinda like a local would no where it is. Sydney's answer to Austin, Texas. It was just like being at sxsw. Great American dive bar feel with a basic menu that oozes perfection in every bite (and painted on the walls for your convenience). They do the classic burgers spot on: simple and satisfying with great condiments and oh-so soft toasty buns, none of that overloaded gourmet nonsense you can't wrap your mouth around. These are solid one-handed burgers so you can use the other hand for stuffing the accompanying shoestring fries down your gob, or better yet, order the mash & gravy and take your tastebuds to pleasure town. Mary's are also famed for their fried chicken which does not disappoint (half bird, full bird, larry bird). And the dessert menu is just one option: the ice cream sandwich. And boy is it a delectable delight at a bargain price only $5 and includes lashings of Nutella, salted caramel nuts and drool. The music is LOUD and heavy (I loved it, but not for everyone), it's very dimly lit, has any drink you could want and is staffed by good looking tatted/bearded/pierced (or all of the above) black t-shirt wearing skater guys n dolls. Nothing extraordinary about their burgers. There are only 2 options for burgers - Mary's burger or cheeseburgers. We tried one of each and the cheeseburgers were tastier. However, it's a simple burger with decent buns. Fries were simple as well. However the bar itself seems like a cool bar with good atmosphere. I'd go there again only with group of friends over good drinks. The fried chicken was ok - ours was too dark so a little over done spit was dry and salty. I've had better fried chicken and burgers. Norah's burgers in the CBD/circular quay is much better. More burger and buns options to choose from than Mary's. By making the two comparison I'd prefer Norths - the fries at North is MUCH better too. read more

Before you read on, I must warn you that there may be some plagiarism in the following review...I am not ashamed by it & will not feel bad for 'lifting' off another Yelper. Besides, I was there...so go stuff a burger in your face ;o) Read on... Not all burgers are created equal (apparently). The range of offerings in this category is vast (well, a thick juicy patty & bacon is a minimum!), and this is why I find it so hard to rate them against one another. I like the Grill'd mushroom burger (hah, definitely not my words!) and its Mediterranean glory - herb pesto, roast peppers and greenery in a wholesome brown bun (where's the M.E.A.T?). But I also like Chur Burger (I do?!), their sweet house made brioche and clever filling combos. Mary's burger is not a Grill'd nor is it a Chur. Its classic dirty-good American. A treat yourself once in a while kind of burger (c'mon, only ONCE??!!!). It's definitely not good for you, but sweet Mary is it tasty (so corny ;oP). The beef pattie - pink inside with a strong meaty flavour - welds with the collapsing bun, melting cheddar and juicy tomato...my mouth is watering (remembering someone else eating it...). Some Yelpers have complained it's too small, but I thought it was just right (well, I think I had a fifth of a burger, definitely wouldn't say no to a FIFTH burger!). They also do Southern fried chicken - the smell of celery salt spice fills out the room. If you only order one thing though, make it the Mary's Burger. We checked out the chicken (I make up part of 'WE'!), it was nice & moist on the inside, but IT WAS a pinch overdone (it tastes like burning...well, almost) and agreed the burger was the way to go (yes...yes it was ;o( ). I also suggest grabbing the potato & gravy, it was herby, tasty, creamy & an AWESOME companion to dunk your fries into! Staff are a bit blahzay, but the bar itself is cool (looks like an old church or something). Dark and moody and a little Goth. The kind of setting I imagine Buffy would meet Willow and Xander at for beers, and then kick some vampire butt down an alleyway afterward (someone's a little nerdy now aren't they? ;oP). read more

Before I went to Mary's for the first time, I read a lot of reviews that the staff were awful, rude etc on Urbanspoon. After looking through the reviews here, I'm almost certain they were rival businesses. Even if the staff are slightly "hipster", which seems to translate these days to "culturally superior", hello, you're in Newtown and it's 2015. Food is awesome, booze selection unusual and it's got an awesome vibe. Check it out, it's worth the wait. If you don't like waiting, cook at home.
