Since returning from the States I'd never expected to find a soul food restaurant that could live up to what I'd experienced. Then I found this place. To say that the food here is sublime would be putting it mildly. It was a quiet weekday. My wife and I wanted a spot of lunch and one of the main reasons we travelled to the city was so I could finally try Butter. We were the only one's there, besides the waitress who moved and spoke like a manager. My suspicions were confirmed when she started interviewing potential employees at the back of the restaurant. She was very cool and managed (see what I did there?) to look after us while conducting the interviews. One of our drinks came with a hair in it, the manager replaced the drink and gave us a free donut. The chicken was sensational, juicy with perfectly deep fried skin and the coleslaw was a creamy contrast that helped ease the spicy sauces. The donut was an amazing pillow of sweetness that made you want to keep eating more. I don't know much about the whole hip hop scene, but I felt like I could just chill here and savor the scenery of barely dressed women enjoying the same great tasting food. Was this lack of clothing a result from enjoying the chicken? Throughout the meal I periodically checked that my clothing was still on. I couldn't conclude my review without mentioning the Laced Up Fries. It came with all these things I'd never heard of - kewpie mayo, Japanese special sauce, furikake, bonito flakes. "What was this stuff?" I wondered. When it came out it was like a living creature, the bonito flakes contracted and released from what I assumed was waves of heat. It was an amalgamation of hideousness and wonder, like one would feel when seeing a deep sea creature for the first time. It tasted incredible, just incredible. I will be back for more unbelievably fantastic chicken.

Heard so much from my colleagues and read so many good reviews about this place! Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was literally empty. 3 people were there but they left shortly. The music was pretty loud which I hated. Service was good though. The server explained to us the menu. I tried the 3 piece box and changed the slaw to shoe string fries. I got 3 tenders instead of 2 tenders + 1 thigh....eek. The chicken was decent, moist and perfectly cooked. The batter was not over fried and is flavored/ seasoned (but wish there was more kick to it). It's overall good KFC, but nothing special really.

Miso corny (corn on the cob, miso butter) and the laces (shoestring fries with shitaki spice)

Butter is an interesting place. They have great fried chicken and they sell shoes. The shoes are essentially decor in the storefront window. Almost all of the seating is high stools. We ordered the 3 pac (1 thigh, 2 tenders), the chicken sandwich, the miso corny (corn on the cob, miso butter), and the laces (shoestring fries with shitaki spice). Both entrees were served with a side of slaw. It was a LOT of food. Way more than 2 people need. We were very hungry after a long morning of sightseeing and ended up finishing most of it. It wasn't the best fried chicken I've ever had but it was fine. They have various sauces that come with the 3 pac but I am not a fan of most sauces so I requested it on the side so I wasn't committing my entire lunch to something I didn't think I'd love (for the record - I didn't like the sauce) but they charged extra to have the sauce on the side instead of on the food like it normally would be served. Huh? The corn was delicious and I'd probably chose that over the fries if I had to pick one side. I don't normally enjoy cole slaw but this one wasn't bad. 3 stars.

Chicken sandwich

I will literally have dreams about this chicken sandwich. I'm from one of the fried chicken capitals of the US in Nashville, TN and grew up on this stuff. I've tried dozens on dozens of fried chicken joints across multiple countries and states (USA) and this is easily in my top 3. I'm also a sauce lover so it is a rarity for me to find a chicken sandwich so well crafted that I think it doesn't need any sauce at all. However, when I bit into the (naked) sandwich for the first time my first thought was ohhhh damnnnnn, should I order a second one right now? It's one of those situations where the food was so good you start thinking about your plans for the rest of the week to see where you can fit in a return trip.

Giant, insane, two handed chicken burgers served in shoe boxes with champagne. I could probably finish the review there because really, what more do you need to know? Oh wait, also there's a ton of sneakers in the window and one time Wu-Tang Clan came in after a Sydney concert and bought up a whole bunch of them and now there's a neon Wu-Tang logo in the window. If you get chips and dipping sauces on the side (chi-lli! Chi-lli!) be aware that you've just made a big-ass meal that will be hard to finish, it will be like running a really delicious marathon that you might die during but what a great way to go.

Burgers, slaw and tenders

Super friendly service with a personal touch in a small, unique restaurant that sells kicks, plays Drake (loudly) and sells THE BEST HOT CHIPS I'VE EVER HAD!!!!!!!!! I got the Cheezeburger which I was able to finish in no time. The ingredients were simple and fresh and the fried chicken was bloody good but the chips... omg. Shoestring fries with some sort of seasoning (Butter don't give away the recipe easily) in a tray of heaven. I'd go back every week just for those skinny golden fried potatoes. I also tried one of the chicken tenders with the OG sauce and the sauce was fairly gross; it reminded me of Cheetos and not in a good way which was quite disappointing as I expected this to be the main attraction. The 'fire' sauce on the tenders was also a let down and like the OG it had a powdery texture and taste to it. When I go back I'll be ordering all of my chicken "naked" and I think you should do the same; after you bathe in the chips that is.

Julian Cincotta, formerly of Rockpool and Nomad and Mo Moubayed and Paul Flynn from Thievery have brought nearly all my interests together in the form of Butter, a new restaurant/bar in Surry Hills. Sneakers Fried Chicken Hip Hop My holy grail...minus burgers. If you have an interest in any of these, you will love it here. The fried chicken here is SO good...it takes influence from Korean Fried Chicken and American fried chicken. This was the soft opening so it wasn't a standard experience, but I was able to try the normal fried chicken and the spicy fried chicken, as well as the chicken sandwich. The normal fried chicken is awesome, not too salty but with big pieces packed with flavour and a slight kick. The spicy fried chicken is SO good...the sauce is a combo of the sauce you'd expect on Buffalo wings from America and spicy Korean fried chicken, topped with some buttery goodness. Seriously, easily in my top 5 chicken places in Sydney from this. The Chicken Sandwich, well I had more of a slider may very well be the best chicken sandwich in Sydney right now. Step aside Mary's, step aside Pub Life Kitchen....seriously this sandwich is goooood. Fried chicken, pickles, dashi butter, and a side of slaw it's painfully simple and painfully delicious. The slushies they have are dangerous as well, as you could easily down several of these and then wonder how you ended up so crunk. Come visit cause this place is going to pop off

Great fun. Fried chicken . Finger licked good. Loud. Eclectic. If you like your chicken with Dom Perignon and sneakers , this is the place for you. High intensity chicken laced with your choice of chillied sauce., laces (fries) with lashings of Nutella. What more could a man want? Oh. Beer of course. A great choice of beers . Everything from a Rocks Brewing Conviction Pale Ale to a 650ml Natch Brewing Weekly Bomber. 10 boutique choices plus ciders and slushes, plus of course a page of sparkling champers. Great hosts. Great night. Thanx guys

Have heard many things about this place, including their soft serve flavours. So stopped by just to sample their sundae. They had 2 flavours 1 lime with popping candy and fruit loops and the other peanut butter with chocolate and butterscotch topping. The lime was nice and refreshing and the fruit loops went really went with the. I'm not a huge fan of peanut butte ice cream so i thought that one was ok,. The interior is smaller than expected with tall tables and stools to sit on. Will hopefully be back soon to sample their chicken!

This is one of those magical delicous tasting places !! There's heaps & heaps of Restaurants around Sydney who have fried Chicken on thier menu, some taste good, some are average and fair few are terrible!! As for the fried Chicken here they ticked all the Boxes lol!! Juicy tenderness delicous fried Chicken!! That sums up their menu on what there is to eat at their restaurant, but you don't need anything more on the menu when the chicken tastes this good !! I had the fried chicken with the bun i personally loved the Chicken on its own. The Slaw was very nice aswell as the shoestring fries & dipping sauce !! Was accompanied with 2 very picky with their food work friends & they all the more pleased like me .. so it was great Success lol!! The alcoholic slurpee was pretty small for the price but still had the strongish alcoholic taste that i was looking for. Tried a spoonful of the fruitloop looking ice cream in a cup & it was very tasty so next time will be getting chicken on its own, 2 slurpees & a cup of fruitloop ice cream !!

She may be little ... But she be fierce!!

Best chicken burger I have ever tasted!!! Order the cheeseuz with ranch instead of mustard BEST!!! The bun is beautifully soft and the chicken was so moist and juicy on the inside yet the skins crunch was cooked to perfection!!! Make sure to get the shoe string fries to share, meals are well proportioned.

Ordered the master pack for 2 american dudes. Plenty of food. The chicken tenders were just as juicy as the chicken on bone. The fire sauce was bomb.

I am the furthest from a vegetarian that you could get (I had ribs for lunch today,) so I was pretty skeptical about how a veggie burger would taste...my skepticism was unfounded because I have to admit it was a pretty good burger. I ordered an original Big Burger meal with no mustard and soy bacon. I thought blasphemy, bacon cannot be soy...but I was the blasphemous one for doubting the Lord (of the Fries.) For the fries I had the original fries (chunky + sweet potato available,) ordered Belgian mayo and Vietnamese mayo (spicy chili) on the side. The Belgian mayo was alright, but the Vietnamese mayo was bomb.com. The fries are double cooked and definitely some of the better fries I've had in Sydney...my favourite fries have been from Ogalo's, but Lord of the Fries gives it a run for its money...I will need to do some more taste testing with their other sauces. If you've been to America, I'd say that Lord of the Fries reminds me of a vegetarian Five Guys since the fries are very similar in taste and quality (minus Cajun fries) and they both offer burgers and hot dogs. The nostalgia may have influenced my review a bit...so take that into consideration. If you don't want to wait in a queue for a super long time, go in the arvo or after their official launch on Aug. 29th. Praise the Lord (of the Fries!!!) ***Update: I went again to try their hot dogs and ordered the Chicago dog. If you're a fan of hot dogs and a carnivore I would skip the hot dog and get the burger, it tastes bland and it's a bit "off," most likely missing the meat taste. If you're a vegetarian and really want a hot dog then order to your hearts content.

This review is for their Chicken Kebab. I wanted lamb, but chicken is the only type of kebab they have. SERVICE: Both employees were busy making pizzas and didn't notice I walked into the restaurant. It took 15mins to get my Chicken Kebab done... That's unusually long for a kebab QUALITY: Below mediocre! The chicken was bland and my veggies were so soggy from the watered down bbq sauce. I was not impressed whatsoever, but forced myself to finish it since I hate throwing away food. VALUE: $8 for a below mediocre kebab is not good value. There's a much better kebab shop near Mamas on Liverpool between Sussex and a George. They have all types of meat! Now I better try the pizzas sober...

We all worked hard through busy nights like Cinco de Mayo, picked up extra shifts, dealt with the chaos, and stayed loyal just to get fired all in one day with no warning, no notice, no appreciation... nothing. All the corporate people came in smiling in our faces, acting like everything was fine while knowing what was really going on behind the scenes. Meanwhile employees were the ones dealing with the stress, confusion, and constant disorganization every single shift. People rearranged their schedules, missed time with family, and depended on these jobs just to be tossed aside in one conversation. What makes it even worse is how many people they constantly hired just to turn around and fire them days, weeks, or months later. Some people left other jobs for this place thinking they had stability, just to get completely blindsided. I honestly feel bad for everybody affected because for a lot of people, this was their only source of income. It also always felt like they only wanted Hispanic workers there so the restaurant could look more "authentic" for the image they were trying to sell, which honestly makes this whole situation feel even worse now. Then they send out fake "if you need anything contact us" messages like they actually cared about the people who kept that place running. And the fact this fake "Mexican" restaurant couldn't even show basic respect to its workers on the way out says everything. Would not recommend eating here in Australia or Japan.
