Mary's Bread Basket is located in a building near the corner of 53 and Sam Tate by the Lowe's grocery store. They have breakfast and lunch items. A sweet employee suggested the chicken salad as a favorite, so I ordered it for takeout (not toasted and without lettuce) as I was in a bit of a hurry. The filling was plentiful as you can tell by the photo. I ate half for lunch and other half for dinner because it was that filling. I also snagged one of their homemade oatmeal raisin cookies that's bigger than your whole hand. The cookie took up the entire to-go box. It was huge and delicious. They had chocolate chip, peanut butter, and a couple of other cookie flavors. Do note they are closed on Sundays. Looking forward to another visit and hope to dine-in next time! read more

We had a great experience at Mary's Bread Basket. We came in around 10:30 on a Friday morning to place an order to-go. We were quickly helped and greeted by a friendly staff. We ordered a Ham+egg+cheese biscuit, a bacon+egg+cheese biscuit, and two breakfast sandwiches with sausage+egg+cheese. We also got a cinnamon roll, blueberry muffin, and hash browns. We got the last two biscuits, so if you're really wanting a biscuit then come early. The food came out quickly and was very fresh and tasty. This is how baked goods taste like when they are made at a home. We wanted to try their pimento cheese sandwich with the jalapeño cheddar bread and a cup of grits. What we noticed is the couple of ladies working at the back with huge smiles on their faces, so did the lady in the front. Over the past two years I have tried biscuits at every place I can find within 10 miles of Jasper. Finally made it to Mary's and am happy to say they are the best biscuits around. What makes a good biscuit? Warm, slight crunch on outside and soft and light on the inside. Moist and a little salty for taste. The thickness needs to be proportional to the filling. Too many places make dense large biscuits that overpower a slice of sausage inside. I have tried to make really good biscuits many times and have not mastered it. So very excited to finally get here. I was very upset when the Mary's Bread Basket in Canton closed so once we were finally over this way it was a MUST to stop in. I enjoyed the chipotle chicken sandwich on jalapeño cheddar bread which was outstanding. My mom had Mary's favorite which she said was fabulous. This is an amazing place for sandwiches, fresh bread, muffins, cookies, cake slices, and more. They have seating inside, Togo, or a little bit of outdoor seating. A hidden gem. I have been wanting to Mary's Bread Basket for quite some time, but my schedule and Mary's just haven't aligned properly enough for us to get together. Well, today the stars aligned and I am glad that I finally prioritized this place. Unless you have heard of Mary's Bread Basket, or just happen to see the minuscule sign as you drive through the roaring metropolis that is Marble Hill, you wouldn't know you just passed one of the best sandwiches going in this area. Even if you know the general location of the place, you'd still be hard-pressed to actually FIND it. It's that well hidden. Treasure hunt over, I make my way into what appears to be an entryway to a smaller business'esque building, and Mary's is stuck right in the middle. Odd layout, but it seems to get the job done, because lunchtime is really moving here. It's best to stay out of the way, and learn from the other locals that know what they are doing. They (she) only have a few sandwich and salad options, but wow are they done correctly (and massively). I was worried that this place was going to be just another bump on the road of my reviews, with little to report home about. I was wrong! Yes, I have the ability to admit that I was wrong, but don't tell anyone about it please. I have a reputation to uphold. Wow...I got the chipotle chicken on the jalapeño bread and it was soooooo good. I also went back and forth about potato salad as a side and it was amazing. Think cold loaded bake potatoes. We had breakfast there this morning. The sandwiches were extremely good. I had the sausage and fried egg on cranberry walnut bread. The bread was homemade and very fresh. It was the perfect compliment to the egg and sausage. The bread was buttered and toasted. It was a really good sandwich. The prices were fair and the dining room was nice and clean. The lady who took our order was really nice. She was also the cashier and the server so she was really busy. She did a great job of handling all the jobs. Apparently they have changed the hours and now close at 2 p.m. Thankfully I arrived at 1:30 but I mentioned to the lady at the counter that I was sad to hear they close at 2 now because I had recommended the lunch spot to two couples I met at Gibbs that day and I was afraid they may not make it there in time. She explained that business had been slower from 2-3 which is why they are doing this. Okay, understandable. I place my sandwich order and ask if she has unsweetened tea. She says "yes, I was actually just about to throw it out"... okay, not sure why she would mention that. At any rate, I received my order and went outside to eat since the dining area is still closed. As I am eating the two elderly couples drive up and wave to me. When they approach me, I immediately mention they are closing at 2 p.m. so they head over to the door to enter and place their order. I check my cell phone and it is 1:56 so thankfully they made it in time. However, they sadly come back to me and say they are already closed. I felt so bad. I raved about this place to them and even told the woman inside I had recommended their place that day and she seriously has to close their doors 5 minutes early. Even after the two couples left, another couple drove up and went to the door at 1:58 and the door was locked. They missed out on 6 lunch orders that day because they closed up early. I recommend you call if you are even close to their closing time. You may want to ask what time they stop taking orders rather than their closing time. Food wise... the chicken salad was still good but definitely less chicken than my last visit. I did not like my potato salad today... way too much bacon in it and very little potato. It is quite small for a $1.15 upcharge so I may skip that if I return. I splurged and ordered a piece of lemon cake to take home. $5 seemed high for a slice of cake. It was not worth the money in my opinion and the frosting was way too sweet. I like sweet but this was overbearing. read more

Day one the biscuits were sold out by 9:30, and we had to get the breakfast sandwich on bread. Not a problem, I got the jalapeño bread, and it was lovely. The next day made it for the biscuit and it was very good as well. I think my third visit I will go back to the bread because it was that lovely. On day two we tried sides as well. I hade the hash browns and ate every smidge. Lastly, was the deserts. I did not have the courage to try, but I will. They appeared every bit as delightful as the rest of what I saw. What needs mentioning is the portion of these deserts. They are HUMONGOUS! The cinnamon roll, with all its glorious icing was about the size of my face. They use Boars Head meats and cheeses and fresh baked breads of white, whole wheat, cranberry walnut, multi-grain, and jalapeño cheddar. Salads are plentiful and tasty. We went here for breakfast looking for a sit down restaurant with regular table service. Was surprised to see that you must order as soon as you walk in and seat yourself. The food is then served in to go containers and you aren't spoken to after you receive your food. Silverware and sauces are all self serve as well. The food is very good on a positive note. I got the sausage and cheese biscuit. They said they were out of biscuits so I had to order on white bread (which was still good). The hash browns aren't anything special, they are definitely from the freezer. We also got a cinnamon roll which is very good if you like sweet foods. It is covered in cream cheese flavored icing.
