Just moved to GA from Cali needed a tailor fast. Very sweet lady. She did a lovely job with my black slacks. I wanted them tighten around the legs and the back pockets shorter too. Had another pants hemmed. All for $48 and it only took her a week to get the work done. I was being overly charged back in California and I would have to wait weeks or even a month for something like Mary did. I will for sure come back to Mary's alterations. read more

I was hoping for the best and was excited to have found an alterations shop nearby. We just moved into the area and being "under tall" is a challenge when trying to find nice clothes without a need to alter them properly. I bought a dress at Nordstrom Rack on sale for $67. It was discounted because it was missing a belt, to my advantage since I don't wear belts. The dress was originally $259. Price tags were still attached. I went to the real Nordstrom store to get it altered (the Rack no longer does alterations). The seamstress pinned the dress and quoted me $65 to alter it. I thought that was a lot of money being that it didn't need much other than the shoulders and straight seams on each side. I took the dress back with me, pinned as it was at Nordstrom, and stopped by at Mary's Alterations on the way home. I walked in with the dress in the original plastic garment sleeve, tags attached, and pinned where it was needed. The lady at the counter (I'm assuming Mary?) looked at the dress and we talked about 15 minutes about everything. My daughter being in the military, her move to this new location, prices of clothing these days, etc. Super nice conversation. In the meantime, I told her that Nordstrom had wanted $65 for the alteration. Her response was, "We can do this for you. Not a problem!" Phew! I was relieved that what I assumed would be not as much, solved my problem. She wrote out a receipt and asked when I needed it back. I said I wasn't in a hurry. She asked if a week would be fine. I agreed. Not a problem. I picked up the slip without looking at it. Of course, no estimate or price was on it and I didn't even realize that. Still, not concerned. I went back the following Monday after the week was up and I walked in to pick up the dress. She asked for my name, I gave it to her and she comes back with my dress folded and wrinkled over the wire hanger. Not covered and not with the tags. I inquired where the tags were and the other seamstress who was there and had worked on my dress said that I didn't give instructions to leave the tags on it. They remove the tags if they're in the way of the sewing. However, the tags were on the neckline label. Not in the way. They told me they were gone. Fine. I asked for the bill and she tells me, "It'll be $85." I choked. I had brought it in to her and we had discussed that Nordstrom was going to charge me $65 and I left because I thought it was a lot of money. She then responds that the shoulders were difficult to do. She had my phone number. Couldn't she have contacted me to let me know? I made no other remarks but my stomach churned. I asked about the plastic wrap, also, no plastic wrap. I paid, walked out, put the dress on my backseat hanger hook and drove to the cleaners across the street by Kroger. The super nice lady said to me, "I just want to make you aware that there's a snag on the chest part of the dress." She told me so that when I picked up the dress from getting cleaned, I would not blame them for it. I thanked her, picked up the dress and returned to Mary's Alterations. I walked in and Mary came to the counter with a disgruntled look. Listen, I didn't want to see me walk back in there either. I showed her the problem and she turned around and asked the seamstress who worked on it what happened. The seamstress said that the dress wasn't like that and that's not a snag she created. Well, I certainly wouldn't have bought a dress with a snag on the chest! Mary (?) then responded to the seamstress, "Well, I'm not going to argue with her, just fix it!" The seamstress fixed it, Mary then steamed the repair and came back and laid it on the counter. No apologies. No thank you. No nothing. Reading the comments left for her, I am not the first customer that this has happened to. I gave her a one star because the dress was altered. But, at a very high cost and unpleasant manner. Thought I'd finally found a good seamstress two years ago with Mary when the one my mother and I had been using for decades finally retired. Two years ago, my young teen daughter needed a panel sewn in the bodice of a dress as the neckline was way too low. We brought in matching fabric to use, and Mary took care of it for a very reasonable price ($35-40 I think). Last year, I had a formal, but simple, floor-length gown hemmed and the shoulders taken in, also for my daughter. Everything was just over $200 as they also took in the waist. Which was more than the cost of the dress! The hemming alone was $140. I was shocked, but paid up. As this was my first experience with a floor-length formal dress, I was none the wiser to the prices as Mary was recommended by a close and trusted friend to begin with, so I figured these prices were par for the course, despite being shocked by them. But, my fault for not asking up front for a quote to begin with. The dress had no sequins or beading or any fancy design or decoration - it was plain. Yes, she did a good job just like she'd done on the first dress. Went to her again this year for another formal gown - because of her good work with the other two, we were willing to make the 40 minute drive from where we live - but this time the dress was a sequined one. While this one required more work to adjust the sleeves, take in the waist (at existing darts) and hem it, plus it needed an additional strap across the back as it was basically backless (and to help the front of the bodice stay in place), the total cost came to $340 ($65 per alteration pus $145 to hem it). Which was just slightly less than the total cost of the dress! Yes, they did a great job, especially with the back panel addition. I can't fault them for their work - they do good work. But their prices are on the high end to say the least. And to add insult to injury, they complained frequently about my daughter's dress during both fittings and pick up - to both of us. My daughter, who loved her dress and received many compliments on it at the school function she wore it to, was horrified she'd apparently caused these women so much pain. Not just a comment like "yes, this was a difficult dress, but we made it work" sort of thing, but more along the lines of "oh this was a HORRID dress to alter. It was just awful. A real pain in the butt. Sequins and beading are such a headache." I never expect sunshine and rainbows from anyone whose business I frequent, but I do expect some degree of professionalism. To repeatedly complain to a paying customer about how much you hated the work AND to charge what she did? No thank you. Maybe her prices are fair, but just know up front anything will be $30-40 per alteration, $65 per alteration if it's beaded or sequined, and $145 for hemming something floor-length. But I'm sure the comments are free! We gave them three chances, but now we're out. Not worth the drive or the headache any longer. read more

We took my daughter's costume jacket to be altered last week. We were quoted$30-$35 dollars after she pinned the jacket with my daughter in it. She pinned the arms and the waist and WROTE $30-35 on the back of our ticket that she gave us. When I picked up the jacket today she said it would be $65. I was in SHOCK. She turned over the ticket and said I know I said $30-$35, but we also had to do the waist. I said you knew that when I got the ticket. With the fee and tax it was almost $70. RUN- this is NOT GOOD BUSINESS. Be upfront and honest always. Will not be giving Marys any more of my business! That's like me telling parents an art lesson is $30 and then deciding that I will charge double. Not ok. read more
