Several people passing by to-go counter asked if I had been helped, which should be customary, but isn't at most restaurants. They showed me my food before paying to ensure my order was correct. Had a very pleasant experience at their happy hour last night. The manager was nice and friendly and made sure that our drinks were always full and that we were enjoying our appetizers. Unprofessional service by the manager, JR, at Marvino's restaurant in Cypress First, Marvino's does have wonderful food. I also understand that sometimes things happen. However, what I experienced last night was unacceptable. 1. Ordered a mudslide and instead got a white Russian in which they insisted was a mudslide. It was strong enough to put a horse down. The waiter explained to me that they had another employee filling in for the bartender who had no bartending experience. 2. Ordered the "Heart of Italy" for dinner. Everything was excellent with the exception of my steak being rare when I ordered medium well. They proceeded to make it right. In doing so they re-cooked the same steak and brought it back burned. I said I can't eat that, but the manager dumped it onto my plate anyway insisting it was good now. I told him this was not professional or acceptable. He finally agreed to go bring a new steak. It took a good 20 minutes during which time the manager stopped by the table at least twice telling me it would be a couple more minutes. No one I know eats burned food, especially from a restaurant as nice as Marvino's. For the record, the waiter Chris was great. He did the best he could under the circumstances, however the manager continued to make Chris the middleman, so that he would not have to do his job. Chris apologized and was very embarrassed. 3. The last time the manager was at our table I said, I hope you're going to make this right on my bill. He said yes. When the bill finally came he had done nothing to it so I sent it back. Chris returned to the table with my bill telling me that he wasn't going to do anything. I requested to speak to the manager. He had a very poor attitude and was very disrespectful. He finally agreed to give me a 5% discount off my bill (take it or leave it), which came to 1 dollar. The 7 other ladies at the table with me were all in shock. I never expected my meal to be comped, but I certainly expected more than $1 off. As a person who has gluten and dairy allergies, I understand the difficulty of finding places that provide meals that accommodate my restrictions. I love Italian food but struggle finding restaurants that offer gluten free pastas. My family and I tried Marvio's on Sunday. When the waiter came to our table, I asked my usual question, "Is there anything gluten free?" He was quick to point out the Penne Pasta Primavera, which included seasoned vegetables, grilled chicken, and a gluten free pasta accommodation. My server did not mention other options that were gluten free, so I ordered the dish he pointed out. Even though he did not point out more options, I noticed choices like the Filet Mignon, Grilled Norwegian Salmon, Gulf Red Snapper, and Lobster Tail that could be combined with sides such as Broccolini, Baked Potato, and Grilled Asparagus, all of which are likely fine for individuals without extreme gluten sensitivities. In the Penne Pasta Primavera, the chicken was very well grilled with a light seasoning that I believe included fresh basil, rosemary, and parsley. The grill marks were even and perfectly spaced. The dish also included bright green sautéd broccolini, yellow squash and zucchini spaghetti, tender julienne carrots, and mushrooms all which were seasoned and cut to perfect portion size. I understand the difficulty of cooking gluten free pasta, but Marvino's served it perfectly al dente. My group also ordered the Akaushi Meatball as an appetizer. I didn't try it, but the marinara was freshly made from crushed tomatoes and had a beautiful red color with perfect texture and seasoning. The entire meal created a terrific dining experience. While my options may have been limited, Marvino's excelled in presentation, taste and overall quality. The bread served with meal is really good and seasoned well! As for others at my table they just rated it a 3 they weren't fully impressed to for sure return... Service- 1 to 1.5 star! Waitress seemed to be overwhelmed, we didn't even get greeted or drink orders til 20 min after being seated. (Strike 1) They brought bread out 10 min after being seated but didn't bring enough plates for the whole party... When waitress did come around and ask me what I want to drink I asked for a cocktail menu and NEVER brought it back to me so I just ended up sticking to water the rest of the night (strike 2). Then we finally got orders in and it took well over 1 hr for us to get our orders to the table! In fact the manager and other staff brought our food to the table not the waitress! She maybe came and checked on us 1 time and then brought check which took foreverrrrrr for her to process! Waited at least 15-20 minutes for our cards to be returned! We even did the math for her on how much to charge on which card and wrote it down... How easy could we make it! I swear we ended up twiddling our thumbs watching as all the other guests around us cleared the restaurant. (Strike3) Also I recognized manager from MIA Bella's- my EX fave brunch place--- what are the odds of that... We decided to give Marvino's a try for dinner tonight. Overall we had a good experience. The restaurant is very open and inviting, the menu options were plenty. I ended up modifying a dish and the server was receptive to my request and was able to have it made. My friend went with the lentil soup, which was piping hot and she noted it was good. I had the house salad which was fine. Our food came fairly quickly and it was hot from the kitchen ( chicken parmasean and linguini & shrimp). I've been to Marvino's twice now...And, I can'I wait to go back. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. Both times that I went, I sat at the bar because there was a game on. It's located in the center of the restaurant which gives you a great view of the dining area. There are T.V.s positioned around the bar so that you can watch more than one at the same time .However, it isn't at all loud. The bar is very roomy and quite nice! The first time I went, I had the the half order Fidellini with Lump Crab Meat. It was absolutely amazing. The sauce was very light and full of lump crab meat. It was served with a side salad with a delicious balsamic vinaigrette, which I preferred on the side. Even the half order was large enough for me to have half of it for lunch the next day. The 2nd time I went, I had the Four Cheese Ravioli...It too. was delicious! I felt that the prices were reasonable especially compared to a chain Italian restaurant where the food is below par. Our waiter, Chris, was superb from beginning to end-our drinks stayed full, our table was kept clean, and we never had to look around wanting for anything. I went with my family for a Christmas Eve dinner, so maybe my experience was not typical, but I likely will not be back again. We did not have a reservation, but they were still able to seat us very quickly, which was a positive. Our waitress at first was coming very quickly, and we got waters and a bottle of wine to share very quickly. We then ordered some friend mozarella that that came in a reasonable amount of time and it was pretty good! However, when we ordered our entrees next things only went downhill. Firstly, they don't even offer everything on their menu, so my parents had to change their orders. Secondly, the food took over an hour to come out. At first we were willing to forgive this as it was Christmas Eve and they did look understaffed. However, the table next to us with 8 people (we only had 3 in our party) came in well after us and still go their food before us, so we decided it had to be more than that. And finally, when our food came out, my fettucine alfredo was reasonable for the price, but my mother ordered risotto and got something that didn't even resemble an attempt at risotto (although she was happy with the large amount of shrimp they gave her). After dinner, we had to wait about 15 minutes for the waitress to return our credit card. So in summary, the food was not very good, and the service was incredibly slow all night. I have been a HUGE fan of Marvino's for sometime, but we have not been there for a couple of months and it is not the same. The Menu has changed and the items they no longer carry were our favorites. The Oil dip for the bread does not taste the same and is very bland. The Lasagna was not as we remember and their sauce is now a thick meat sauce lacking flavor versus the delicious red sauce they used to have. The short rib stuffed Ravioli was totally different than the dish we had previously and not in a good way. I am so disappointed. This used to be our favorite Italian stop. Just had a very delicious evening meal at Marvino's. Nice atmosphere, not too loud, we could actually hear each other talking in our normal voices. The server was efficient and friendly. Hubby had the Shrimp and Crab over Risotto (he said 3.5), I had the Chicken Parmesan and besides being huge it was really yummy (I give it 4.5). Our boys had the kids pizza and the chicken fingers. Pizza was good, chicken strips were decent and the fries were really tasty. I thought the prices were not too bad, I didn't think they were any higher than other casual Italian restaurants. I was a little worried about what the bread was going to be like based on some other comments. The bread we got was I believe a sourdough that was served warm with olive oil for dipping. Not sure what all was in the bottom of the oil bowl (basil, black pepper, maybe some red pepper flakes?) but it was really good as was the bread. My one disappointment was that unlike most other Italian Restaurants, they did not offer fresh grated Parmesan for the entrees. I missed having that, as did the rest of my family. Also my side salad was just okay. The dressing was decent, but I had quite a bit of lettuce core that was inedible. Overall we all enjoyed our meal and we will return. read more
