this bakery is amazing! They make pretzels and pretzels and pretzels - all by hand. This is a family run business, over 75 years old. You can watch them making the pretzels from behind the glass.. The pretzels from the Akron, PA bakery are great! Those from the bakery in New York are consistently burned. I returned a box of the burned pretzels thinking it was a fluke. What they sent back to me were as bad as the first bunch. The owner was very nice about the exchange, but at the end of the day the pretzels just are not worth buying. In contrast, I would recommend the Akron, PA bakery. A great product and terrific customer service. read more

Best Pretzels on earth! I have been giving buckets of them to my customers for 30 years at Christmas (they are red and white). They are not sold in that area and they ALL rave about them and tell me how much they appreciate and look forward to getting them. I also used to bring bags of them to my previous employers national trade shows. Everyone used to come to our booth looking for them and said they would mail order them because they had never had such great pretzels. We also bring a bucket to friends and family whenever we leave the area to visit. They also look forward to getting them. They only seem to be able to sell to family owned markets. So we are very disappointed that Giant has bought the 3 local family owned markets near us and have not reached out to the Martins as a vendor. Visited here on 7-22-2013 & am just now getting to write a review. Martin's is a small, nondescript brick building on the middle of a residential street in a little Pennsylvania town. My main reason for visiting this part of PA was to visit/see pretzel factories & naturally, this one was on my list. By far, this is the most traditional of all pretzel factories you will visit in this area. It is staffed & run by Mennonites who wear traditional garb & speak their traditional language. But you will feel a bit like an intruder when you enter (through the back door). On my visit, a young girl with a combination of a Dutch/English accent came out to greet me. You can see everything the other workers are doing on the other side of the glass. But it's kind of like staring at people & I felt a bit embarrassed. No other visitors were there at the time I went. I only spent about 5 minutes there observing. I saw the man that runs the place & the rest of the people there were women, twisting pretzels, loading up trays, etc. There were pretzels for sale but most all they had left were flavored (such as mustard) and/or very large bags & I wanted something smaller. The girl kindly gave me a small hard pretzel for free that had just come out of the oven & it was delicious. Martin's is definitely a unique look into a completely different culture that I had never experienced before. Their web site is quite good & you can order from it as well, something I may do in the future. Of all the pretzel places I visited in the Lancaster, PA area, this one had the best tasting hard pretzels. read more

They are one of the few of my favorite go to pa pretzel companies I like to send me some home to my haus.

These are the best pretzels ever and worth the money. We usually visit Lancaster once or twice yearly and i stock up on the pretzels to last a few months. In between this time i do mail order the pretzels. Until recently realized there are two locations and have been ordering from the wrong one all this time (i couldnt understand why there was a difference in the quality). Dont confuse this with the Martin's pretzels in New york which if you do a search will be the first site to come up, go down a few and martinspretzelspa.com will be the one you want. Although the pretzels from New York location were ok and similar i did notice a difference in quality. At the Akron location you can also order the regular 8 oz bags from here instead of the individual small bags in New York. read more

I've enjoyed these authentic Pennsylvania Dutch hard pretzels for over 50 years now. I was introduced to them when I moved to Dawn Avenue in Akron PA which is literally around the corner from the bakery (see the map on this page). I took my kids there a few times and they often got a free pretzel while I took a three pound box home. They didn't last long either! Mr. Martin was still alive then and there was no glass separating a visitor from the girls rolling and twisting the pretzels. In those days it wasn't as necessary as it is today. The little bakery shop is still there, still family owned and operated and the pretzels are every bit as good as Mr. Martin used to make them and today there are more varieties, too. I've been away from Akron for many years now, but I still get them sent to me by ordering on line. Pennsylvania is the pretzel capital of the country if not the world, and I've tasted and enjoyed so many brands, but Martin's remains by far my favorite. There's not a whole lot to see on a 'tour' but it's interesting from a standpoint of Mennonite life, and I still stop in to buy some pretzels personally on the now rare occasions I visit Lancaster county. I'm so thankful I can get all I want by ordering on line. Delivery price is kind of high, but well worth it. And don't complain if some of them show up broken. You're going to have to break them to eat them anyway. A piece of Martin's pretzels is a great treat. read more

I absolutely love these pretzels. I moved to Oregon from Wisconsin and we ate lots of pretzels with horseradish/cheddar cheese as appetizers and good football food. I would highly reccomend the x-tra salt and slightly burnt and the Mustard pretzel bits. Both hard pretzels and they dont get any better than these. Buy these over anyone else. read more
