At the height of the Great Depression, Lichty had an idea to open his own pretzel bakery. He enlisted the help of Hammond: his grandfather and next-door-neighbor. Hammond had worked as a pretzel baker in the 1800s and brought with him an excellent recipe for sourdough pretzels. They set up shop in their adjoining garages, where the pretzels were rolled by hand and baked in a brick oven. Other family members soon came on board to assist in the operation. Lichty's daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Tom Nicklaus, took over the business in the 1970s. Today it is run by their son and daughter Brian Nicklaus and Karen Achtermann. Hammond's Pretzel Bakery is the oldest continuously family-operated handmade pretzel bakery in the United States. Still operating in the same location, and still rolling pretzels by hand, Hammond's bakes 1,500 pounds of pretzels on a daily basis. My family and I recently visited Hammond's Pretzel Bakery while we were traveling through Pennsylvania's Lancaster County. The area may be known for its rich Pennsylvania Dutch culture, but it's also known for its rich pretzel history and production. It just so happens that pretzels are my favorite snack! The bakery has a small retail shop for customers to buy pretzel products directly. It smelled amazing when we walked in. We also enjoyed watching the freshly-baked pretzels coming out on the conveyor belt. Hammond's produces a large variety of pretzel snacks: the most popular are their classic old-fashioned sourdough pretzels which come packaged in an iconic five pound orange-and-green can. We decided to stock up on multiple flavor varieties to snack on while we were on the road, including: "Buffalo Ranch", "Dill Pickle", "Garlic Herb", "Cinnamon Sugar", and "Chocolate Covered Clusters". They were all delicious! We don't get to Pennsylvania often, but I think it's safe to say that we'll be ordering more pretzel products from Hammond's online store in the future!

The pretzels from the oven come out right there in the gift shop on the conveyor belt. They even gave us a fresh pretzel off the line. So delicious! I bought about $20.00 worth of pretzels for family and friends back home in AZ/CA. The 2 ladies in the shop were very kind and helpful. They even gave us the tip to look in the 3 back windows of the building on the way out. We did, and we saw about 10 people hand rolling pretzels. YES....they hand roll each (big) pretzel. What attention to detail! Simply amazing. Must stop if you are back in Central PA.

During the 1850s, Sturgis worked as an apprentice bread baker. There are a number of variations of the origin story, but the most popular one seems to be that Sturgis was preparing a batch of soft sourdough pretzels and accidentally double baked them due to the summer heat. This "happy accident" resulted in dried-out pretzels. The head baker felt that no one would want them, but it gave Sturgis an idea to exclusively produce and sell crispy pretzels. By 1861, Sturgis had purchased a historic stone house and added a pretzel bakery in the back. Sturgis' brand of crispy pretzels soon became a big hit. He would continue to operate the business alongside his family for several years. The Sturgis Family is still in the pretzel business to this day. Clearly, I had some lost time to make up for. I worked Mr. Sticky's into my adventure schedule and stopped by their Lancaster location shortly after lunch on an early August Thursday. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to find this cute little building tucked into a shared parking lot with a few picnic tables outside. Even better, there wasn't anyone in line when I walked up to the window, so there was absolutely nothing standing between me and my impending sugar rush. The menu was shockingly simple, and I mean that as a compliment. In a world where I sometimes need 20 minutes and a flowchart to order dessert, Mr. Sticky's basically says, "Here's the good stuff. Pick one." Cinnamon rolls. Regular stickies. Walnut stickies. Iced cinnamon rolls. Regular icing. And...PEANUT BUTTER ICING. Well, hello there! Being myself made of approximately 63.8% peanut butter, there was no way I was leaving without investigating that situation. But I also wanted to try one of their classic stickies, so I decided to see if I could break the universe and ordered a regular sticky with peanut butter icing. Success! Even better, the peanut butter icing came in a little container on the side, allowing me complete control over exactly how ridiculous I wanted this experience to become. I collected my box and headed for one of the picnic tables in the shade. It was approximately 95 degrees outside, so I was grateful for every square inch of shade available. Then I opened the box. This sticky was HUGE! It was beautifully golden, covered in glistening glaze and smelled absolutely incredible. I was already thrilled, but there was still one very important test standing between Mr. Sticky's and greatness. The peanut butter icing. Listen, I'm particular about peanut butter icing. If you're going to invoke the sacred name of peanut butter, I need you to COMMIT. I don't want something light, airy and vaguely peanut butter adjacent. I want thick. I want rich. I want peanut butter icing that looks me directly in the eyes and says, "Yeah. I'm peanut butter. What about it?" It was time to find out if Mr. Sticky was going to become my future husband. I took one little forkful of the icing by itself. And audibly squealed. Cold. THICK. Rich. Punch-you-in-the-face peanut butter. OH. YES. Mr. Sticky understood the assignment! I knew there was absolutely no chance I was going to finish that enormous sticky in one sitting, so instead of dumping the icing all over it, I went bite by bite. A little sticky. A little peanut butter icing. Repeat until happiness occurs. And happiness absolutely occurred! The sticky itself was soft, sweet and generously glazed, and adding that ridiculously rich peanut butter icing pushed the entire thing straight over the edge. Was it incredibly sweet? Yes. Was that a problem? Have we met?! I'm still not sure how I grew up in Central Pennsylvania without Mr. Sticky's entering my life sooner, but I'm glad somebody finally corrected this terrible oversight. My only complaint is that the closest location is nearly an hour from my house because I can already imagine these becoming a holiday breakfast tradition. Thanksgiving morning with Mr. Sticky's? Christmas morning with Mr. Sticky's?! COME ON. Holiday made! So I'm passing along the same advice my friend gave me. If your adventures take you anywhere near Mr. Sticky's, don't just consider stopping. Make it a destination. Get the sticky. Get the peanut butter icing. And maybe don't make any legally binding matrimonial decisions until the sugar rush wears off.
