This little gem in Comox was such a surprise. Canada doesn't seem to be much of a Yelp area so I wanted to get on and give my opinion. This busy little spot definitely needs a reservation. It is hopping on a Monday evening. Let me first say the service was excellent. All the staff were friendly and prompt. We started with some appetizers the calamari and the mussels. Both was delicious. It is rare to find calamari that isn't over cooked and this was cooked perfectly to tender, lightly breaded and served with a fabulous taziki sauce. The mussels served with toast points in a lemon wine sauce was excellent. I order the seafood linguini that had sockeye, clams, mussels, white fish and prawns in a lemon cream sauce that was all excellent. A huge portion that I took half home. My husband had the pork schnitzel special and upgraded to the risotto for his side instead of mashed potatoes. He also added a ceasar salad for us to share. It was wonderful!! We also tried the red and white sangria and wow it was awesome! It comes by the glass or 1/2 L or whole L. It was delicious! This restaurant came highly recommended by another boating friend and we will definitely go back! Every year we come to Comox on our boat and stay a few days. We have been Dining at Martine's for as long as we can remember. Each year it is just as exceptional as a year before. The service is impeccable and it's so fun to look around at all the special touches they have in this restaurant. The beautiful wood floors, the robust bar area and the wonderful patio that opens up to the restaurant. The food is delicious and beautifully prepared and presented. Their sangria is so refreshing and filled with fruit and their crème brûlée is served in a long, narrow dish with two spoons. So good, always. read more

The ambiance was cute but the service ... less so. Our server rarely checked in & the food was not great. There was also a hair in our food - the server did take it off the bill which we appreciated. That being said - we were not impressed even if this wasn't the case. I worked until the service industry for over 10 years and that was some of the worst service we've ever experienced. When I'm Comox we'll stick to Black Fin and Ocean 7 in the future. read more

I've read some of these reviews and I would have to agree with the people who wrote that the servers are somewhat rude to the customers. They come off with a sense of arrogance that is not usually seen in Canadian restaurants. I have eaten here a couple of times and food is all right but I don't find the menu anything to get excited about. I think sometimes restaurants with a reputation stop trying. read more

This was THE find in my mind. Cozy, elegant and great friendly service. This was a last minute decision and arrived at 7:30 pm on a quiet Wednesday evening. My GF had the Walnut encrusted Pork tenderloin special. While maybe not quite as tender as I make, she thought the flavours were great, veggies tender and hot. I had the fresh wild sockeye salmon that was simply to die for. Warm mango and pineapple salsa on a bed of simply the best risotto I've ever tasted. I am a picky foodie and usually don't find reviews balanced. With this wonderful find, I find myself wanting to just praise the staff and the chef. Ordered a ribeye that was the special. what came was a strip loin that was tough and flavourless. The demiglaze was horrible. And the red cabbage was gross. My date ordered the same dish and was equally disappointed. And her steak was a lot smaller. Which seemed very biased towards women. Like she's not as hungry as a me. We were unfortunate enough to arrive on an evening when staff were shamefully rude, first, to an extremely elderly couple upon entry and later to us - a group of 6 who had spent quite a healthy amount on dinner and wine. The owner was called on both occasions only to offer a pitifully sad and embarrassingly cowardly response. We will certainly take note when making future dinner plans in the Comox Valley as Martines will no longer be considered an option. read more

So, I really looked forward to trying Martines Bistro! The reason the review is 3 stars is because it is the middle star. 1 star because food was adequate, 1 star for decent ambiance.... 1 star for generosity. period. I reserved 10 days before the dinner date with 3 of my close friends, 2 of which are in the hospitality industry, 1 a celebrity chef. Staff problems: phoned me 2 days to ask me what time my reservation was made for. Hello? Waiter, brought one couple their meals 20 mins. ahead of the waiting couple across the table. When questioned, very blasé attitude, and blamed the served couple for " just doing what was requested". Just no. No excuse. Not even true. I am embarrassed, both for myself, the hosting party, and the owners of this otherwise potentially intimate and delicious dining experience. I'm sorry to be negative, but happy to warn the proprietors. Careful with your hires. They are your face. read more

The food is quite good. The service is another story. We called to reserve, it's like they didn't know how. When we arrived, they couldn't find the reservation . We were not surprised. Had an amazing date night out with my wife. We started with their amazing mussels dish and crasar salad. For our mains I had pulled pork Wellington and my wife had the grilled duck breast cook to perfection. We then finished our meal with a white chocolate creme brûlée. Yumm!! 2nd time here in a month. Very disappointing. Two of us ordered blackened tuna and it tasted like it was old and bad. The woman who was possibly the manager (not our waiter) came to our table to tell us that it was "cold smoked tuna" and offered no apologies and did not offer any remedies to the situation. She really didn't seem to care about our concerns. The menu doesn't let you know that it is cold smoked and they even ask you how you would like your already smoked cooked ahi tuna cooked! In a word , "Terrible". First of all the entrees all came out with cold potatoes . Which we told them about and they responded by bringing more cold potatoes . The compliments of the entrees were carrots and a 1/4 beet on everyone's plate except a few and their were 12 of us . This is supposed to be fine dining isn't it ? Second , utterly flavourless the turkey schnitzel had zero spices in the coating . The seafood pasta tasted like it had an entire Lemon squeezed in it . The tenderloin was like leather and cold with cold potatoes (29$) . The service was great though and I've eaten at this place before and enjoyed it . Have been to this restaurant twice before our most recent visit. On our first visit we were very pleased with food & service. On second visit we found the food OK however service was very cold & unfriendly. On our most recent visit our server was very abrupt being on the borderline of rude. Never a smile neither did she have a welcome attitude. Responses to our enquiries were not pleasant. Since this was our second bad experience we will never visit again. Best place in town for amazing food. The attention to detail in the food and decor is very evident. Went with my wife tonite, and have been before, and it is always excellent. Very romantic and old world. It is why you should go out and eat! The patio, which we do not always get to enjoy in Canada is beautiful, reminds me of Europe. A great little spot for dinner! I've been here a couple times and have always had excellent service and a delicious meal. At my last visit, I had the organic greens and baby back ribs. The greens were served with a lovely onion Marmelade and the ribs were falling off the bone perfectly. I'll definitely be back. read more

Food and service were impeccable. The table we sat at was outdoor and the sun was pretty hot. Apparently we were at the only table not protected by the many umbrellas and awnings. Due to having small children we ask d to be moved to a neighboring table that was shaded. This is really the only complaint and is minor. The portions were perfect and tasty. Things are going down hill. Had a steak special, had a very hard time sawing through the gristle and gagged on some more. The fish dishes tend to be very good, as is the sangria in the summer. Three of us arrived right at 5pm. We were a little snubbed as we said no when asked if we had a reservation. There were only 2 tables filled. We were seated & greater by a very nice waiter but was almost over trying. Food was good. Tried the halibut special. When asked if it was today's local catch he replied with, 'our fish is always fresh'. My cousin had the salmon which she was impressed with. BF had the vegetarian lasagna.. he gave it a 3.5 out of 5. "Could have used more cheese". All in all I'm sure we'll go back. I think we'll try going early again after reading other reviews. read more

My family lives in the valley and have gone to this restaurant on many special occasions. As have I when I have come to visit. Unfortunately, it appears that this restaurant has developed arrogant attitude lately. My family attempted to call and make a reservation for a special birthday dinner. As the restaurant was not open yet, a voice message was left. Many hours later, no one called back and when they called to followup, they were told that they were busy and to call back? This is certainly not customer service. It appears that this restaurant has enough business and prefers not to book any future business which is unfortunate as this was always one of our favourite restaurants to frequent. I would not recommend or visit again at this time when there are many other great friendly restaurants that are happy to book future business. read more
