Ok, so I've had a ton of acupuncture in my life. From the busiest most well known spots in San Francisco to the more unknown places all over the bay. I believe if done well it's very effective for boosting energy, clearing up pain, and getting the body to work as it should. Today I had the pleasure of getting treated by Marti. I had heard through the grape vine that she was one of the first people practicing in the bay and had been a master acupuncturist for 40 years. Still, I had no clue it would be as totally great as it was! I'm 8 months pregnant and she totally helped me today! I feel better then I have in a while, my pains are gone, and I have more energy. I first saw Marti in 2008 when I was pregnant with my first child. My midwife recommended that I see her in order to address a high-risk factor (gestational diabetes). While working with Marti, I was able to keep my gestational diabetes under control, not only through acupuncture, but also through some pregnancy-safe herbs Marti recommended. As an added bonus, my third trimester was relatively free of the pain and discomfort that so many other expectant moms go through. These treatments really made a difference, and I have recommended her dozens of times to friends. There's one more thing: seeing Marti once a week was an INVALUABLE contributor to being in a healthy mental state for my son's birth. My visits to Marti gave me the space to relax and have some quiet, still times to myself in the weeks leading up to my labor. Marti always had amazing meditation-type music for me to listen to during my sessions. Achieving a state of deep relaxation for an hour each week really helped me be able to stay calm despite my labor/delivery jitters. Even after four years, I still remember some of Marti's kind words of encouragement. And, it was a Hawai'an music CD I fell in love with during my visits to her that I brought in the room with me for my son's birth and that I play for my son to this day. I had a wonderful experience here. The energy is peaceful when you first walk in. I saw down with Marti to discuss turning my breech baby, and she really took the time to listen. I had a sore throat, too, which was a minor problem considering the pregnancy, but she took the time to make sure to help with that as well. After the moxibustion treatment, we took some moxa home to keep practicing, and two days later, the baby had flipped! I was so happy, and my throat was better as well. Getting pregnant, being pregnant, preparing for birth, and BEING a mother can be a challenging process. I was referred to Marti a year and a half ago when I was having trouble with the first of these. From the start, Marti was personable and warm and I even think genuinely excited for me. She loves babies and treats her clients like friends so this seems to make sense. Marti has been practicing for a long time and being in her care feels like being fed by an Aunti. Aunties know how to feed their loved ones- they don't think too hard about it, it comes naturally, and they do it with confidence. Being cared for this way is completely different than the type of relationship a woman can have with an OBGYN.
