Service was excellent! We had marinca ( sorry if I butchered the spelling) as our waitress and she was wonderful... knowledgeable of the restaurant history and the owners. Highly recommend for breakfast or lunch. Friendly staff, excellent service by Paula, and great portions of delicious food. Definitely pay the up charge for homemade bread and blueberry jelly! We will be back several times before we leave next week.....and it's a 20 minute drive from the rental cabin. read more

We can now say we've dined at all 4 of the "Four Sisters" diners. 3 are located near us in Massachusetts and when we last ate at the Dream Diner in Tyngsboro we asked sister Bridget where the 4th sister was located and it just happened to be near where we were vacationing in Bar Harbor this summer. She hand-wrote a note (see pic) to her sister Martha and we held onto it until today. From the outside Martha's is an unremarkable spot in a strip mall, unlike the diner car style restaurants of 2 of the other sisters. But walking in, the Elvis, Betty Boop and Marilyn Monroe decor is very similar to the other diners. The place was packed and there was a short line at the door. The staff was great and fast and we met Martha herself to give her the note. Ok, on to the food. We had coffee, eggs, home fries and sausage and bacon. The toast was the best part. It's homemade, fresh and delicious and they offer local homemade blueberry jam for it. All of our meals were perfectly cooked and tasty. Just like the other sisters' diners. Next time I'm this far up in Maine I will be back! read more

Great staff of waiters and waitresses. Food was excellent, the homemade rye bread (worth the $1.40 extra), price point was reasonable. Order a couple of omelettes, the big surprise was the homefries. It the first time I have seen real homefries made from cut up potatoes instead of phony frozen homefries from a greasy vat! Strip mall breakfast place in Ellsworth, Maine...right on US-1 (near Shaw's grocery store as a visible landmark). We both had creamed chipped beef (one on toast, one on biscuits) with home fries. Chipped beef is not for everyone, but this was an excellent rendition, plenty of beef and a nicely-done white gravy. i thought having it on (home-made white) toast was better than the biscuits, but to each their own. Excellent home-made home fries...nothing fancy, but browned just right w/out being greasy. Funky, prototypical inside w/great service. Definitely a go-to breakfast place (also check out Sylvia's if you're in town for awhile). Update...went back here to try the eggs Benedict based on Yelp reviews. Had the half version. Thick ham slice but not overpowering, nicely done egg, grilled English muffin (a bit greasy to be honest), and a really good hollandaise sauce...the last made the day! My wife had the hash which was pretty good although not great (would get again though). The service is epic with rotating waitresses who bring stuff out immediately. I was steered here by the manager of the hotel I stayed in and it was a good tip. It was an early Sunday morning but the place was already packed. Luckily I was alone so the hostess put me at a small table by the front doors, sans menu, and told me a waitress would be right there. I guess it was the invisible spot, because the minutes ticked away and nary a soul came to my table. I finally got tired of taking pictures and watching the locals, so I flagged someone down. WIth profuse apologies I was given a coffee and a menu, and all was right with the world again. I chose the ham and eggs (sunny side up) special and when it arrived I was greeted with 2 beautiful eggs with very yellow yolks, a mess of pan fried potatoes and the biggest slab of ham I've seen on my plate since the recession hit us. Take a look at the picture, it's a monument. And delicious it all was, the bacon not salty at all, the potatoes from Maine, so of course the tastiest ones you're ever going to eat - Idaho's are pathetic in comparison - and those eggs. tasty. Too bad this isn't a local dinner, but I guess my heart is thankful it isn't. read more

Found Martha's because of you Yelpers and you all hit the mark! I definitely would have passed on this place based on the "cover" of this book, but the reviews made me eager to read and my family and I were very fulfilled. I had the Trenton omelette (a little but of everything) and my wife had one with vegetables no cheese. Kids raved about chocolate chip pancakes and French toast. Wife's and mine came with potatoes and bread or for an extra .75 we could get homemade bread or biscuits. We chose the biscuits and my kids who were already on carb overload wanted some, too. The omelette were really tasty with a thinned out egg and plentiful fillings of meat and vegetables. It was not cheese heavy. The kids' pancakes were extremely good and I had to finish my daughter's. "The pancakes were too big for me to finish but my daddy could!" Service was always with a smile and everyone who was working there really seemed to be having a good time. I even ran into the owner and our waitress at the supermarket next door when I was in line and had a nice conversation about how great Maine is. Martha's is worth a return visit! $41 for 4 for breakfast not including tip. read more

It would be very easy to expect very little from a diner that is tucked away in a tiny corner of a shopping center, in between a laundromat and a parking lot in Ellsworth Maine. That said, Martha's Diner delivers. The food here is really really good. And it should be, Martha has been running this place since I was "knee high to a grasshopper." The place isn't huge. Most of the tables seat 2-4 people. There is a bar area where you can grab a seat if you're by yourself. Movie memorabilia and 1950s classic decor line the walls. The locals come in here as well. That says something when you get a nod from the people who live there year round. Maine tends to be an older and lower technology crowd, so my guess is that the people who would write rave reviews of this place aren't big on smart phones to "check in" using their Yelp app. There is a relaxed ambiance of this place that is tough to describe. The people from Maine are just the nicest people going, and they seem to live life at a much slower pace. This is not to say that the service here is slow. To the contrary, they are extremely efficient for being so relaxed. If I remember correctly, this place is cash only so be prepared. I've had just about every item on this menu that is vegetarian. The blueberry pancakes are a Maine staple, and they are absolutely delicious. This goes for a lot of places around here, but they use fresh Maine blueberries that are smaller and much sweeter than you find in the grocery stores or anywhere else in the country. The vegetarian eggs benedict is divine. The iced coffee is great. I cannot say enough about this place. As with all the out-of-towners who flock to this area to enjoy the gorgeous summers, I'll always be back to stop in to Martha's. read more

After a crowded drive from Bar Harbor after the Fourth of July, where all the good breakfast venues were overflowing with people, I was lucky enough to find Martha's on Yelp. This unassuming diner turned out to be my favorite of all the places I'd sampled during my week and a half in Maine. The atmosphere was warm and genuine, the service was friendly and prompt, and the food was amazing. I ordered Martha's raspberry stuffed French toast, which was delicious. The space is small, so a wait may be necessary (though I enjoyed prompt seating at the counter). If you're looking for a true local diner with great food, go to Martha's; you won't be disappointed. read more

I don't want to write a review of Martha's because I don't want anyone to know about this place. I think it might be too late for that. We stopped here for breakfast on the way back from Bar Harbor. It's in a shopping plaza, it's packed with locals and it's cash only. Sunday mornings you'd better have your whole group there or they won't seat you until everyone arrives. We didn't wait long because it was just the two of us and food was coming out of the kitchen fast and furious. I checked out the specials board and my eyes lit up at biscuits and gravy. If anyone knows me, they know that I'm a huge b & g fan. I'll try it at every place that offers it. What I got at Martha's could only be described as spectacular. A gigantic plate with a pile of biscuits covered in a lake of gravy. I'm not even kidding. There were tiny boats floating in the gravy. Ok I'm actually kidding about that part. But seriously, it was too much even for me. The biscuits were light and fluffy and not dry at all. Sometimes I think places makes biscuits and gravy so they cover up their hockey puck biscuits with gravy, but not Martha's! The gravy was creamy and peppery, just the way I like it. I couldn't finish it because there was so much. It was Sunday morning so the servers were very busy but it never felt like we were being rushed out of the place. They were attentive but not hovering over us and very kind. This is the perfect diner with top notch food and I'm so glad we stumbled upon it while looking for breakfast. read more

Despite the great reviews we experienced TERRIBLE service here. It wasn't packed and it took 20 mins before we were asked for our order. About another 30 minutes later SOME of our order came out. Coffee requests went unfilled, I ordered orange juice and that never showed up. By the time we finished our breakfast the toast that was supposed to come with our order arrived. What a treat, this is my idea of a New England breakfast. Very much a local place, flash back 50's decor, clean, comfortable and homey.
