I cannot urge you enough to avoid Dr. Grafals. I went to see her because I had postpartum…read moredepression and was having a bad reaction to the med my gyn had prescribed. I felt awful - emotionally and physically. She abruptly told me that if one SSRI didn't work for me, none would, and I'd have to go on stronger meds and wean my 3 month old baby. When I asked her if it was a good idea for a depressed mom to lose the only connection I could make to my child, she said it didn't really matter much whether I nursed or not, that she had chosen not to nurse, and that my son would be better off if we let him cry at night, weaned rapidly, and bottle-fed him. I was stunned. I couldn't believe that a doctor could be so ignorant and put her personal opinions about the "waste of time" breastfeeding was (her words, I'm not kidding). She wasn't kind or even understanding. She seemed amazed that I cared. I read the literature - I'm a professor, I'm used to reading professional journals - and I told her that there were many safe antidepressants for nursing moms, that nursing helped with the symptoms, etc. Here's what it comes down to: she didn't care in the least about me and what I was going through physically, she had no idea about research that was 10+ years old, and she gave me BAD and seriously HARMFUL medical advice - without any sort of knowledge of the meds she was going to prescribe. Run, do not walk away from this terrible doctor. I went to a psychiatrist even though I thought I didn't need to, and found out that different people respond to meds differently, that some SSRIs work when others don't, that nursing was key for my condition, and that my chronic insomnia (which Dr. Grafals had dismissed even before I was pregnant) was a key part of the issue. Don't see a GP for anything related to insomnia, anxiety, depression. Don't let them prescribe meds they know little about like Paxil and Ambien. I now have a GP who works wonderfully with other doctors as needed - knows what she knows, and doesn't hesitate to refer me to a specialist where needed. She never puts her personal opinion in the way of my care, and she listens to me. Grafals didn't even come close - but I'm grateful in a way. If she hadn't been so indifferent and uncaring to me, I never would have found a GP who was the complete opposite.
