Different flavors for each layer at no extra cost, and real frosting not fondant
JP W.

This fall my daughter, son-in-law, and I tasted and met with several wedding cake specialists in Spokane, and the winner by a wide margin was Marsells. The wedding was earlier this month, and many guests made it a point to mention to me how the cake was not only elegant but was also truly delicious. Knowing how good it would be, we ordered a cake large enough for everyone to have 2-3 pcs and sure enough the leftovers were scant! Marcel herself made numerous suggestions regarding design, flavors, and using real frosting instead of fondant. Unlike some of the higher-volume cake producers in town that employ teams of cake-makers, Marcel herself is hands-on in the baking. And unlike many alternatives, there was no up-charge to have each layer a different flavor (which our guests LOVED), or for the elegant decorations. Those few one-star reviewers seem to take issue with the fact Marsell's 'tasting room' near downtown is a shared space (with an excellent cheesecake artisan)... or with the fact that she cannot always accommodate last-minute orders... and in my opinion those folks deserve a 'warehouse' cake from Costco. Their reviews are exactly like complaining that the service at a superb local eatery is not as fast as McD's, has a smaller menu, and isn't open until midnight. For more discerning cake aficionados who are looking for a bona fide artisan masterpiece for a special occasion, and understand that a culinary artist is not a warehouse producer, Marsells is the place.

Walked in on Friday after a windstorm for a cake I needed on Saturday for a birthday. Staff was amazing and really accommodated my request and the cake was beautiful. All really enjoyed it's rich and delicious flavor.

Sampler in the bag

It's a shame when a place can lose someone's business like mine strictly because of poor service! I haven't even tried my sampler yet and really don't even care to because no matter what I will not be getting my wedding cake from them. Too bad their loss because based on their pricing it would have been a $400 cake. First of all the pictures posted on here by others are deceiving because when I went in there, the displays were completely empty no cakes, cupcakes or any sort of treats. I was hoping to see some of their cakes or cupcakes and to even buy a cupcake to try fresh rather than some sampler that was sitting in the fridge with prices of cake made god knows when. It's almost like a closed down business inside just bare display cases nothing on the walls just a bare store front. So first I called yesterday before visiting and I spoke to Stephanie. I told her I was interested in wedding cakes she explained that I can go to the store on Sprague and get a sampler. She went on to explain that I should try to get there before 4 because sometimes the gentleman that works there sometimes decides to close up early. This was first red flag or odd thing to me that I even commented to my fiancé about. I said, it's strange that he just up and decides to leave early regardless of hours of business, but ok whatever. So I go today Friday at 11:35am and there is a handwritten sign on the door that says closed for lunch from 11-12. Ok so I look on their info on both Google and website and hours posted in door and nowhere does it say that their hours include a lunch time closure. Stephanie never warned me that they might be closed for lunch. Now keep in mind I drove over 30 mins to get there. So out of frustration I call the number and I get Stephanie again and I ask if there is a way to contact the actual store instead of wherever she is. I told her I would like to confirm that one this guy is going to actually re-open at noon as the sign says and two that there are actually samples! I told her that I felt it's poor business practice that the set hours aren't adhered to and the person working can just close the shop as he pleases. She just kept making excuses rather than apologize and say it will be addressed. She said, "Well you have to understand he works alone and if he needs to get lunch...." I have owned a small business and I never would allow someone just making up their own Willy nilly hours especially when they were being relied on to keep my shop open and be the "face" and first impression of my business! I told her she needs to understand my position I am the customer and I drove all the way based on what info she gave me and what's available online! She said well she had no idea he would close for lunch. Uhm excuse me, that is a problem!!! Well so I go back at about 1215 and the guy is siting at a table eating and talking on his cell phone. I walk in with my kids and he still on the phone comes to the counter and says in the phone, " hang on hang on I got someone here. He doesn't put the phone down or hang up and he says, "you picking up a cake?" I told him no I was there to get sample tasters? He goes ( phone still up to ear) oh? Yeah ok they are in there pointing to a cooler to my left which is empty but a small stack of their sample packs. I go to reach for one, then he asks, "did you come here a few minutes ago?" And I said yes and he again says, "oh!" Hard roll of the eyes. "Well there you go, you got your tastings" rude tone. I stared to look at them to see if I had any questions and he again rudely said, "Thats it that's what you get." I said ok and then there are some papers hanging on the cooler with info about the cakes and pricing etc so I go to grab one and he all but snaps at me and says, "No you got one in there !" Pointing to my little bag with the samplers. I said ok again and proceeded to walk out and as I was he says into his phone, "Yeah that was her, " my assumption is he was speaking to Stephanie. It's sad when my kids say to me as we walk outside...gee that guy was rude! I have no idea how based on this business practices how they do so well I don't care if they have cake made of damn gold! I would never do business with them! Their name is like on every list of vendors given from the venues and believe me I plan to let them know of this experience and tell them that this business should not go be on their recommendations, why would you refer your clients and brides to a business like this! There are a lot of talented bakeries and bakers here and in CDA just because Marcells may have good cakes do yourself a favor and give business to the small businesses that deserve it because they actually give a crap about their customers! Clearly Marcells head and ego is too big for their own good they have the belief that they earn the right to treat people how they want because people will come to them anyway. Well that won't last sorry to say, too many upcoming bakeries who do a better job!

I'm not usually one to blast a business online or complain about customer service, but this one…read morereally missed the mark. Last Tuesday, I called Lilac City Bakery to order a custom Minecraft-themed cake for Paxton's 8th birthday. We talked through everything--flavor, size, layers, filling, and most importantly, the design. I specifically asked for the Minecraft "block" look, and she mentioned adding green grass edging to an 8-inch round cake. I also requested it say "Happy 8th Birthday Paxton." Total cost: $167. Fast forward to Saturday pickup... and it was just a chocolate cake covered in green frosting. No blocks. No characters. Nothing that even remotely said "Minecraft." I shared my disappointment at the counter, and the solution was to add a few pre-cut fondant pieces on the spot. I reached out to management afterward, hoping for some understanding or resolution, and was told: "I do not find that we made any missteps in providing a custom, hand crafted cake which aligns with the theme." and "hope you enjoyed the cake over all, as it was very well done". However I completely disagree. So I'm genuinely asking... are my expectations too high for a $170 custom cake? Because this felt like a pretty big miss.

Still Love the Donuts, But the Birthday Reward Experience Has Been Disappointing (Second Year in a…read moreRow) This is my second review--and more specifically, the second time I've had an issue with Hello Sugar's birthday coupon. Let me be clear: I absolutely love Hello Sugar. Their donuts are amazing, GLUTEN FREE the shop is adorable, and I've been a loyal customer for three years. I truly have a passion for this place. That's why it's hard to even write this, but I feel like I need to be honest about my experience. The first year I got the birthday coupon, it was great--no problems. But last year and now again this year, things just didn't sit right. This year, my birthday fell on a Wednesday. I was busy all day and couldn't make it in, but I was really excited to stop by the next day and use my birthday coupon. I'd even told my friends about it and planned to share the donuts with them. When I got to the counter, I mentioned I was there for the birthday coupon, showed the code, and was told it had already expired--on my actual birthday, June 18th That was shocking. Most places give you a few days after--or even a full month--to use a birthday reward. I wasn't asking for something unreasonable. I just missed it by one day due to a busy weekday, and I genuinely didn't even know it expired on the birthday itself. What made it worse was the way it was handled: no "happy birthday," no kindness, no flexibility--just a flat, "It's expired." It really put a damper on something that was supposed to feel special. And to be honest, this is the second year in a row that I've walked away from a birthday visit here feeling disappointed and a little embarrassed. Any time I come in with a coupon or reward, it feels like I'm being treated differently--like I'm doing something wrong by trying to redeem what they offered me. I'm not asking for free stuff all the time--I happily support Hello Sugar all year long. But if you're going to offer birthday rewards, they should feel celebratory, not frustrating or awkward. And a little grace and kindness can go a long way in those moments. I still love their donuts, and I want to keep coming back. But honestly, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth--and not because of the donuts.
