I hired Raul Hernandez in May 2024 to build a modern fence. The project was completed in June, but only after multiple delays from him not showing up when he said he would. Within three months--by September 3, 2024--the fence was already showing serious issues. That started a year-long nightmare of back-and-forth with Raul. He made endless promises to fix his work, but rarely followed through. Over the course of an entire year: -His father came out twice (for only a few hours each time), but even admitted the job needed to be removed and redone. -Raul only came out once, after I pushed him repeatedly. -Because the fence was built with tongue-and-groove wood, it can't be "patched." The only fix is to remove and rebuild it. Instead of taking responsibility, Raul kept trying to shift the blame to his father--even though his dad only set the metal posts at the start, and Raul himself did all the woodwork. Every step of the way, it was excuses, no-shows, and broken promises. Finally, after a FULL YEAR of nothing, I asked for a refund. I obtained two professional quotes from reputable fencing companies, both over $6,000 to fix Raul's work (reusing the same metal posts). At first Raul agreed to a refund, until he realized how much it would cost him. Then he backtracked, claimed he would "work his magic," and when I declined, he started threatening court. He even bragged that he does liens and isn't afraid of legal action. We even tried to be reasonable by offering him a compromise of $4,000 (still leaving us $2,000+ out of pocket). He refused. At this point, we are taking Raul to court and filing a complaint with the CSLB for all three of his companies. To be honest, I imagine the repair work would not have been so substantial had Raul addressed the issues when I reached out to him a year ago. I asked Shay for help with adding a wall to my garage, change area of laundry air vent, demo carpet on stairs and on second floor , change subflooring on second floor, install laminate flooring where carpet was, new walk in shower, and upgrade our stairs to have risers. The finished job looked beautiful and well built. There were minor details that I wanted fixed and Shay had it fixed next day. It was amazing. As for the cost, it was comparable to other competitors. We saw Shay and his team had proof of work. Shay took us to one of his other renovation projects and that house was beautiful. Even after the job is done, Shay does not ghost you. A friend recommended Patton's Steel in Irwindale. I inquired via email, and a person named Cody Robinson got right back to me the next day. He gave me a quote for a steel 12-ft piece of 11-gauge square tubing 1.5 in x 1.5 in x12 ft. I had looked at other places, but the prices were crazy, and to have it delivered was, in some cases hundreds, of dollars. I had a few more questions, and Cody answered them promptly. He made me feel very comfortable working with their company. He stated that the product would be on will call for me at the Ontario location which was great because it was on my way home from Fontana. I let him know that I had Thursday off so I would pick it up then, and he said no problem just go to the front desk. I did just that and within about 10 minutes I had a 12-ft square tubing made of steel at my disposal. I really didn't need 12 ft, so I asked them if they could cut it to 10 and I didn't need the scrap. The person with whom I delt, said that was not a problem he took it and cut it to a 10 ft length--perfect. The staff knew their product well and it was very nice to deal with people that knew exactly where product is and how to get it to the customers in a timely manner. Now the Ontario location is a retail location, so I thought it might be more expensive, but I was wrong. Out the door the price was $54.38. I brought $54.40 thinking they wouldn't have pennies, but much to my surprise they did have change and I got two pennies back, I guess two cents for my thoughts hahaha.. This location, has all kinds of tubing, posts, solid and hollow, whether they be square cornered, round, long or short. I was amazed at the selection that they had. If you have need to make a brace for a tree or need to make a cage or tubing for some reason, this is the place to go.

Marquez iron work and Gates in Orange County certainly makes a name for themselves with their custom ironwork. They have to make sure that their quality control and installation process is better. Their specialization in designing and crafting quality iron fences, gates, railings, and more is evident in the final product. The price quoted for my five gates was reasonable, reflecting their competitive market positioning. However, my experience with the installation process was somewhat mixed. During the initial installation, there were a couple of issues. Despite clear instructions to cover all existing holes to avoid stucco repair, an extra hole was left. Another gate would have resulted in a significant hole in the stucco, necessitating a complete redo of the gate. This meant rescheduling another installation day. A more concerning issue was the significant scratches on all the newly installed gates. When questioned, I was told that the gates had been sitting in their yard for some time before installation. This lack of quality control was disappointing, leading to all gates being uninstalled, repowder coated, and reinstalled. However, Marquez Gates' response to these issues was commendable. The team was responsive and friendly, demonstrating a keen willingness to rectify the problems. The second installer ensured the quality of the install was perfect, highlighting the company's commitment to customer satisfaction. Despite the initial hiccups, the final set of gates look fantastic. However, the journey to get there was more convoluted than it should have been. In conclusion, while the end product from Marquez Gates is of high quality, there appears to be room for improvement in their quality control and installation processes. read more
