Leeds Kirkgate Market, City Centre, Shopping Quarter

Irene's manages to cover the exterior of the shop with its wares while still keeping the sign…read morevisible - plenty of other stalls in the market should take note! It sells mainly baby clothes, and some very adorable ones at that (though I am a little biased as I am one of those (probably rather irritating) people who practically squeals in adoration at the mere clatter of a pram so I find anything approximating a baby-grow pretty adorable!) Some of the baby grows are padded to the max with detachable mittens to keep little baba toasty and warm even in our recently snowy climate...I actually rather wish they sold them in my size! They also have other baby grows of standard thickness and some rather more grown-up baby clothes...I actually find it rather creepy when a six month old baby boy wears a nicely ironed checked shirt and jeans and has his 3 hairs gelled in a side parting like a terrifying little man...but these clothes also go up to toddler sizes. There is also a tiny hoodie with the word 'skate' emblazoned across the chest...personally I think trying to make your baby look cool is most certainly not cool! Other clothing includes princess-style dresses for tiny baby dolls ...sorry... 'girls', hmm...also not particularly cool. It would make some sense maybe if she's a baby bridesmaid...I remember my little sister aged 10 months looking decidedly spherical and bored in a pink satin dress and matching headband at my aunt's wedding. Haha! The clothes here are very cheap at 2 or 3 pounds for tops or trousers and £9 for an amazing padded baby grow. Great for parents struggling to cope with the financial burden of a new child, though charity shops also often cater well for little ones.

Since the sad demise of the city centre Disney Store this remains as Leeds standing sole survivor…read more It's a shame really something I've always relied on in moments of kidlet present fury is the option to dip into the Disney Store on Commercial Street and spend far too much money on this industry giant of a brand. Walt and his relatives have made plenty of brass out of me over the years, but I don't resent it, as small kidlets and big kidlets alike still light up when you chuck an oversized stuffed animal of film appropriate characters at them. It may be a sad fact but it is true. From the cashing in of the newborn babies super cute baby grows and birth momentos, to the ever so cute toddler clothes and pyjamas, right the way through to the themed character costumes, and then beyond this to Disney's selection of toys, stationary, trinkets and other cartoon gifts, this is a kid's dream store. Like I said, I've never failed to make a kidlet smile when packing various items in a Disney box, complete with Disney fairy dust, and just watch the excitement unravel. Granted this may be a tad indulgent, and many things are overpriced, especially the DVDs, but for treats of special occasion magnitude, then I think it's totally worth it. White Rose's offering may now be a bit out of the way than the convenience of the Commercial Street store, but it's got most of the same things, and the staff are super happy to help. Extra perky is sprinkled on their cornflakes. Fact.

Not having had children, I am not an expert on Mothercares, so forgive me if I sound a little bit…read morestupid and naive here. Visiting this Mothercare was quite an experience. I can't really summarise it adequately so I'll just have to go into detail. I came here with some ladies from my work to spend the collection of £150 we'd put together for a colleague we all loved who was going on maternity leave. I was all nonchalant and blasé and 'yeah, babies, whatever, let's just get some bibs and that'. Until I walked through the door. It's like some kind of different world. I wanted to cry within five minutes. My voice was hoarse from all the 'ooohs' and 'aaaahs' and I couldn't stop pointing at all the teeny tiny booties and t shirts and one-sies. A plethora of clothing, accessories, cots, blankets, gadgets, toys and other baby stuff, this place is quite something. There's an upstairs that I don't think I could quite have coped with emotionally (plus we overspent by £30 because we got carried away), but there's prolly lots up there too. If you're expecting, or know someone who is, and feel that you're strong enough, you have to come here

This lovely ladies-wear shop situated just five minutes or so from the Cross Gates arcade shopping…read morecentre. I discovered it on a recent outing to Cross Gates, having heard about the arcade here I decided to check it out. I had some time to wander around and so stumbled across this little store. As soon as I wandered in I realised that the clothes weren't particularly suited to me, but this isn't a criticism. It's just that the fashion inside is very much suited to a more mature lady. They had some lovely dresses and jackets to make up the perfect 'mother-of-the-bride' style outfits, all priced in the region of £150, and lots of accessories. They had some Radley bags, lovely knit cardigans, little shrugs, vintage rose style clutch purses and much more! There was even a very reasonable £10 and under sale rack which had quite a lot of items on it. One of the best bits about this lovely shop however is the welcome. As soon as I wandered in the two ladies who were serving greeted me with some really friendly banter - one of the ladies asked me about my camera which was hanging from my neck. She asked me what I liked to photograph and so I told her I liked taking portraits, to which she responded - "I've a friend who likes photographing the ups vans." I smiled, not knowing what 'ups' was, and she explained - "You know, the parcel delivery guys - ups vans!" I smiled, getting it and said, "Oh! You mean the UPS vans! I see. How strange!" She agreed with the classic - "Well, you know what they say, there's nowt as queer as folk!" And we had a right laugh about her friend and her ups/UPS obsession. They didn't once go for any kind of hard sell, it was completely relaxed and friendly, and a totally lovely experience. I didn't buy anything, of course, but I shall certainly be recommending it to any friends/colleagues who are in need of something nice and occasional. Lovely!

I am very conscious about my 'slightly larger' size so didn't feel too confident about buying however, both my sister who was with me at the time & the assistant commented it really suited me. I bought the dress (a very ritzy style) as I love glamourous dressing!. at the party I received so many positive comments on how amazing I looked. That was the 1st time for years I have worn a dress so 'thank you' Joan's for boosting my confidence. It will now be my regular shop when I am in need of a special outfit. I have actually seen another dress there this week, for a very bargain price of £10!!! I am aiming to go back for it.
