If you want unusual, trendy and expensive then head to Mark's Bar at Hixster. It's a little bit hidden just off Southwark Street bit booking is recommended. We were really fortunate and managed to get a table for 6 of us.
The bar is quite quirky with old cinema style chairs at a sunken bar and a mixture of seating around it. It's seated only so it will never get too crowded and the service should therefore be excellent.
I liked the atmosphere and the music was the right level to hear it but still be able to talk and I liked the decor and setting. The drinks were good quality but you really do pay for it. We also ordered bar snacks. You can pick three off the menu for £10 which seemed really reasonable until they came out. We ordered 6 between us - two lots of chips and curry sauce, two lots of sausages, chicken popcorn and buttermilk chicken. Be aware that the chicken popcorn is chicken flavoured popcorn not popcorn chicken! The chips were like chicken shop fries but the curry sauce was full of flavour (not very spicy though), the cocktail sausages were great and had a good amount of herbiness, and the buttermilk chicken was the best. It had a great crumb on it and the chicken was tender. The portion sizes were small for the price.
It took quite some time for half our order to arrive which was a shame as it would have been good to have the chips at the same time as the sausages but they did apologise by giving us two big bowls of chicken popcorn and a portion of pork cracking with apple sauce. This was a great gesture and I really enjoyed a piece of the crackling. Many in our group thought it was too fatty but I love it like that!
The toilets have wallpaper with sex scenes and, ladies be warned, the naked ladies in the drawing by the door move! It slightly freaked me out when I caught the reflection in the mirror! I have no idea if there's something similar in the men's!
Definitely quirky, very pricey but pretty cool with good quality food and drink.
3 stars seems a bit harsh as we had a great time there but I think a lot of that was down to the people I was with. 4 stars would be too high. The staff weren't friendly and I'm not sure I saw any of them smile and it's just too pricey.
I've heard that the restaurant upstairs is very good though and worth trying out. read more
